Title: CV64/LoD's in-game font?
Post by: Claimh Solais on November 27, 2012, 12:21:14 AM
What font is it that they use for in-game messages/text for Castlevania 64 and Legacy of Darkness? I really liked that font. And then I saw a sign for an apartment complex near my old house that used the same font, and I wanted it even more.

If someone could help me with that, [lumbergh-voice]that'd be greeeeeeeeeeat[/lumbergh-voice].

EDIT: A download link would be nice, too.

Screenshot. I'm not understanding which font exactly you're referring to.

Hmm it's a sans-serif typeface but I don't recognize it and that doesn't do you much good :( Too bad I wasn't still in college otherwise I'd show it to of the linguists and see if he could hazard a guess.

Couldn't you just assemble the entire alphabet text by using those screenshots? That's assuming every letter of the alphabet is in there.

Man... I was hoping someone would know. I figured it'd be something common if an apartment complex was using it...

Couldn't you just assemble the entire alphabet text by using those screenshots? That's assuming every letter of the alphabet is in there.

I think the uncommon letters like Q, X and Z would be missing (haven't checked myself). And even if all letters are in the game, I myself do not know how to make a font file.

It's a stereotypical blackletter font.

One thing you can try: Get a VERY CLEAN screenshot of the font. As many letters as possible. Then go here:
http://www.myfonts.com/WhatTheFont/ (http://www.myfonts.com/WhatTheFont/)

After that, take the results to Google and see what you can come up with. I have a growing list of blackletter fonts based on some of the other CV titles. Every game has at least one custom letter, though. So don't expect perfect matches.

Update 2:
I got started for you. Used a different site to look it up.

What do TheouAegis and a Pizza-hut have in common? They deliver!

Using my image manipulation skills, a bunch of screenshots from the Castlevania 64 Intro, and TheouAegis's resources, I have confirmed that the Castlevania 64 font is heavily derived from the old Calligraphy Fonts.  Although there are commercial fonts that more or less match, "Calligrapher" is almost exactly the same when setting the kerning to 200 or more (nice and far apart).

Here's a link to the font:
Calligrapher Font (http://www.whatfontis.com/Calligrapher-Regular.font?text=Transylvania%20in%20the%20mid%2019th%20century)

Here's a comparison shot I did:

The biggest differences I noticed are in red (the lowercase 'd' and 'g').
It's pretty close otherwise, though! ;)

Like I said, I have a growing library of blackletter fonts for that very reason. You'll find a font that 80% or 90% what you want and then there will be a couple characters that don't match. So you mix and match the fonts (easier to do in Game Maker than maybe some other programs). If you can decompile the fonts, you could mix them up and recompile them in a font maker.

Also, bit torrent is your friend. You can find a lot of commercial fonts at TPB.

Yes, yes. Let it all out. It's okay to shed tears of joy.

Yay! :D

That font you posted is extremely close, Jorge. Close enough to the point where I don't mind the slight differences.

It was only a matter of time before I figured out what I was doing wrong.

Scroll down to where it says "customize" and in the little box there type (or coyp-paste):

Dracula's curse

Only the D is capitalized. That was what was throwing me off for so long. So for all you old-schoolers, you are welcome.

"But TheouAegis, the apostrophe is wrong."

Piss off. Anyway, it's a misaligned comma.

Not good enough for ya? In the "customize" box put:
