What are you hoping happens in regard to the Castlevania series in the upcoming year?
- I would like to know it's already going to be revealed who is going to work on a Castlevania game next after LoS2.
- I hope the series returns to a more inspired art design. Roughly any artist who worked on the series from 1993 - 2009, or of course a completely new artist.
- Admittedly, I would like to see any elements introduced by the Lords of Shadow series ignored except for the wonderfully gothic design of the castle from LoS1.
-
I'm hoping that we get a new classicvania preferably one that isn't 2.5D but true 2D
most of all though I'm just hoping that 2013 will really bring the LOS saga to a definite conclusion and that Castlevania moves onto more interesting things.
-
I hope that LOS2 ends on a high note and that Castlevania moves on beyond it.
Hopefully a new dev team will take on Castlevania and stick closer to the source material in the next reboot.
-
For Castlevania to get a lot better than it is now.
For Konami to realize the Mercury Steam games were the stupidest thing the series has ever done and bring things back to what fans want to see, which is, ya' know, Castlevania.
For Konami to realize that what fans want to see does not necessarily make for games with minute sales. Castlevania will sell and be competitive in its natural form so long as the games are great, inspired, and fresh. Bullshit gimmicks like LotR reboots or the most cliche anime tropes aren't necessary. Please don't insult people's intelligence, or your series like that, Konami. If your stuff is truly, truly excellent, and it's marketed intelligently, people will buy it. Word will carry. People aren't turned off to elegant artwork or pretty vampires. You can make a game about panda bears fighting in submarines, and if it's really awesome, people will play it. What people are turned off to are uninspired, stale games that cut corners due to production values and development periods that are way too low.
-
I'd like the team that made "Contra 4" to be given a shot at the series.
-
i just want to be happy :)

Never see a Castlevania with horrendous anime style

My hopes and dreams for 2013 are to find someone and get married :D I feel like 26 is too old to be un-married, but maybe that's just my personal feelings.
-
I wouldn't mind a revival of the Kid Dracula series. Maybe give kids their own offshoot of the CV series. I tend to find, nowadays, it's like adults are bogarding the majority of everything, and want kids to meet them on their level than vice versa(which IMO, hurts kids, because kids should BE kids, not attain to be young adults at a younger age). It's kinda the "selfish adult" syndrome. I think kids nowadays are getting gypped. You could evidently see it on saturday mornings. Where it used to be the golden time for children, now they only run some regurgitated Cable programming, then cut to a multitude of sports programming(Because daddy needs his beer time with his friends EARLIER than usual, so kiddy, get the fuck out of the living room, it's MAN TIME!!!).
It's actually kinda strange who everything exists in stark contrasts nowadays. Nintendo exists MAINLY to deliver child/family friendly games, but rarely releases teen-adult aimed titles. Most other game developers have shifted to targetting solely teens to adults, but give chidren the shaft. Why can't there be a medium area? Doesn't it kinda make sense that, the wider demographic you aim your game selection to be, the more chance you'll have to appeal to more of an audience? More money? Isn't that what developers/companies are all about, money?
-
I hope Castlevania will continue in a more dark and serious, western fantasy inspired, direction of the LOS, though maybe with different story this time. I'll be glad, if it not returns to the "metroidvania" formula forever. Level by level progression should be preserved with remotely high difficulty and platforming.
Castlevania deserved better treatment than rehashing its own guts again and again for the sake of I don't know why. It's deserved to be better than a 2D outcast game on portable consoles. It's deserved to be great and epic even, if it changes some aspects of the series.
-
My hopes and dreams for 2013 are to find someone and get married :D I feel like 26 is too old to be un-married, but maybe that's just my personal feelings.
Marrying at 26 is pretty early IMO. But maybe it depends on where you live. It seems 30-35-ish is the 'norm' here.. Which makes perfect sense cause people are somewhat grown up and ready at that age. Or as ready as you can be..
As for Castlevania? I just hope MoF and LoS2 are decent.
-
I would wish Castlevania would return to 2D sprites.... enemies, characters and environments looks so much more lively than the ones I seen in Mirror of Fate.
-
I wish for Castlevania to return to it's source-material, but keep things new and exciting. Los cattered to some people why were of the original series and those who'd never even heard of Castlevania. But in the end it alienated a lot of people who were long time fans. I wish for 2013 to be the end of this current dark age of CV and bring about a hopeful new outlook for the future of the series.
-
I wish for Castlevania to return to it's source-material, but keep things new and exciting.
Amen.
Although it's already been said, I'd like to see a return to the Classicvania formula in 2D, with staples the series used to have: high difficulty, theme (Eastern take on Western horror icons), and a short yet competent storyline. Add gameplay innovations to the old formula. And if that can't be done, a retro-ish title like Mega Man 9/10 would be awesome, too. Of course I'm still open to other possibilities, but seeing a return to its roots would be my favorite.
And a return of Konami to the days of old. It's always good to have one of your favorite titles in the hands of a competent publisher.
-
I just hope to see more fun Castlevania games. I'd like Ready At Dawn to take the reigns if the lame-ass Konami CV team doesn't want to do it. Ready At Dawn knows what it is to respect the roots of a game while giving a fresh new experience. They did, after all, make God of War: Chains of Olympus, God of War: Ghost of Sparta, and Daxter, all of which are quality games that are impossible to tell that they were made by a different development team than Santa Monica or Naughty Dog.
-

I believe there's a way to do something relatively new and daring without alienating classic fans. I'm a firm believer in that(that you CAN appease both classic fans and gain new fans without sacrificing each other to the flames of change). The fact seems to be, it's far more easier to give in to either side that try to win both of them. But, it CAN be done. I think people just don't wanna try. I mean, not only relating to this, but other aspects of gaming, you can try to expand the genres considerably, but many people tend to hold back out of fear. But, they also forget, not new road is tread on an old familiar one. You HAVE to break away and move forward, and that means break away from just trying to innovate classic franchises, grow a couple and get into that pioneering spirit that once was, new IPs, new ideas, not just "Castlevania, but we are trying something different" or "Final Fantasy, but a new spin on it!!". It's like we are in the Age of Contradiction and Hypocrasy.
-
My hopes and dreams for 2013 are to find someone and get married :D I feel like 26 is too old to be un-married, but maybe that's just my personal feelings.
I thought this was about just our hopes and dreams for CV.
If it's for stuff in general, then I hope to get my first kiss this year. Not having been kissed by age 34 is pretty embarrassing. :'(

From WayForward's official site (http://www.wayforward.com/support/):
Q: You guys are super awesome, can you make the next [insert oldschool video game franchise] game?
A: It's an honor that so many people want us to take the reigns on so many great franchises, and we'd love to work with those IPs. But you should realize, any licensed IPs we work with; Contra, Aliens, BloodRayne, etc.; are not owned by us, and it’s up to publishers to hire us to make the product they want using their IPs. We can rarely pick and choose which IPs we want to make games from. So for example, if you want us to make the next Mega Man, Castlevania, or Metroid title, you’d have to write to Capcom, Konami, or Nintendo. That being said, feel free to do just that; it might actually work. ;)
time to start flooding Konami's mailboxes, people
Not having been kissed by age 34 is pretty embarrassing.
b-but you have had sex, right?

bring things back to what fans want to see, which is, ya' know, Castlevania.
yeah you are totally right. IGA had totally lost his touch, and Mercurysteam did a pretty decent job at going back to a more classicvania style not seen since SoTN came along and ripped off Super Metroid, starting a series of soulless SoTN clones. (see I can be all edgy too)
For Konami to realize that what fans want to see does not necessarily make for games with minute sales.
The later IGA games say differently. It got stale, and yet, that is "what the fans wanted" (sans the artstyles of DoS and PoR which everyone hated).
Castlevania will sell and be competitive in its natural form
depends on what you consider "natural form".
so long as the games are great, inspired, and fresh.
like the MS games. You can't get any "fresher" than a reboot.
Bullshit gimmicks like LotR reboots
I dunno what game YOU were playing. I saw an epic Classicvania game like we have never seen.
or the most cliche anime tropes aren't necessary.
Ill assume that is referring to the anime cliche's IGA likes to throw in most of his metroidvanias.
Please don't insult people's intelligence, or your series like that, Konami.
yeah, Harmony of Despair really hurts my brain. It's insulting as a Castlevania game.
People aren't turned off to elegant artwork or pretty vampires.
no, but they are not for everyone. Ayami Kojima's work, while great, is still anime based, and that is something not everyone likes. And to be honest, she started to get a bad case of sameface with her character designs. And sometimes, her faces or proportions just looked plain weird. (She has gotten much better by Harmony of Despair thiugh)
The Artwork featured in LoS, while too scarcely used for my tastes, was still incredibly elegant and creative. it's just a shame that it is used so little in the game aside from monster bios and shit.
Also, Twilight kind of killed the "pretty vampire" thing. I think it's best to return to the good old fashioned Vampires are bloodthirsty monsters, not prom dates.
What people are turned off to are uninspired, stale games that cut corners due to production values and development periods that are way too low.
I don't think all of it should be attributed to that honestly. IGA was definitely nerfed by that, but some if it was himself. he has the ass backwards way of developing games that involves creating a gimmick first, and then writing the story around it, and that is terrible because it leads to overly gimmick driven stories and gameplay. He got Lucky with AoS, but further games declined in that respect. He also is not the best storyteller. His original stories can be potentially fun, but his sequels tend to be horrible. (Case in point PoR, CoD and DoS) Again probably due to his gimmick driven development practice which enphasizes the gimmick rather than the story, in a series that ever since SoTN, has been story intensive.
As for my hopes for 2013? More Castlevania, duh. i agree with most when i say that I would like someone interesting to take up the reigns of the next Castlevania once MS finishes up with LoS2. Wayforward being the preferred candidate. (or just in house like it used to be)
-
HO HO HO i hope LOS2 and mof are awsome :D
-
IGA IGA IGA IGA IGA IGA IGA IGA
Man, this is not about IGA. It's about making good games.
I don't know why with some people it has to be about one thing or the other. I don't know why some people think that just because one hates Lords of Shadow, they have to revere absolutely everything IGA has ever done. I'm not going to defend Harmony of Despair, because I don't think it's a good game, no matter who made it.
-
"Castlevania has truly reinvented itself with its move to next gen platforms and we're extremely pleased at the positive response we've seen toward Castlevania: Lords of Shadow globally, mainly due to the dedicated fans who have supported the series for so long. The remarkable sales achieved in such a short time are a true testament of the work and dedication that went into this project, and we're very grateful to have partnered with such fine talent in the rebirth of one of Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc.'s most successful franchises"

I wouldn't mind a revival of the Kid Dracula series. Maybe give kids their own offshoot of the CV series. I tend to find, nowadays, it's like adults are bogarding the majority of everything...
Bob Chipman talked about this danger in one of his very early "Game Overthinker" episodes, his mic quality sucks but at least there's no drawn out intro sketch. And he makes a lot of very good points and shows important parallels between gaming's over-focus on the adult market today and that same focus in the late 80s and early 90s which led to the still largely crippled mainstream/superhero comic book industry we have now.

That's something you guys gotta make happen for yourselves, you can't sit around waiting for it to happen or thinking you're entitled to get a girlfriend/boyfriend. Talk to people, find others with similar interests, "worse case" scenario there is that you make new friends with similar values and interests.
As for Castlevania I would love to see more good new ClassicVanias or remastered collections of the pre-LoS 3D Games. But most of all just for the series to get back to its fun, cheesy monster mash roots.
-
I just hope that the next take on CV would be good enough to shut up both sides of the IGA vs. COX pissing contest. :P
-
Oh thanks for the pep-talk Ratty. There IS someone I've been talking to though. I just hope she's "the one".
-
I hope that LOS2 ends on a high note and that Castlevania moves on beyond it.

This. I'm looking forward to seeing what will happen to the series after LoS2.
-
well, for 2013, i'm fine hoping for the best LoS games possible. a LoS soundtrack or tie in comics would be nice too. can worry about what comes next in 2014. but, i wouldn't mind a finding out about a little side project with the scope of a The Adventure ReBirth or Harmony of Despair from team Japan or even Castlevania Puzzle if it's interesting enough.
-
I just hope that the next take on CV would be good enough to shut up both sides of the IGA vs. COX pissing contest. :P
Nonono, but then it will become an IGA vs. COX vs. NEWCOMER Pissing contest!
I'm kidding. I agree with that. Though the above IS a legit possibility depending on how the next dev handles Castlevania...
-
I hope we'll stop the eternal stupid debate of traditional/metroidvania vs. LoS.
God, I'm sick of this shit.
-
The Artwork featured in LoS, while too scarcely used for my tastes, was still incredibly elegant and creative. it's just a shame that it is used so little in the game aside from monster bios and shit.
The artwork from the travel book was really neat. I really liked how dramatic it was in a Baroqish sort of way. But it's disappointing that the character designs pale in comparison with most other artists affiliated with the series up until this point.
-
i want to get Nathan Graves brought into the story. After all, he IS the most powerful vampire hunter that isn't Belmont related. I also think a disc-based Harmony of Despair sequel would be a real bread winner... think how awesome it would be to see Leon, Hector, Gabriel and Trevor stepping into the arena and so many more bosses we all love ;D
-
I think the influence of LOS in the Castlevania series will important because it`s not a game isolated as Legens, Circle of the Moon, or Castlevania 64. LOS covers all generation X360 and PS3, and even in 3DS, so its influence on later Castlevania saga will be important.
-

The Baroque style from Kojima is good for a Castlevania set in the 18th century, but this is not suitable for all times of the series
LOS have the best design of Simon Belmont
-
First, I would like to see more side-scrolling Castlevanias in the vein of SotN/DoS/OoE. I know Mirror of Fate is coming to 3DS, but I would much prefer to play a 2D sprite-based game with 10 levels of parallax than see even the handheld titles move to 3D.
Second, as long as we're messin' with the 3DS, why not finally collect the entire primary timeline into one 8GB 3DS card for $49.99?
(01) 1094 - Castlevania: Lament of Innocence
(02) 1476 - Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse
(03) 1479 - Castlevania: Curse of Darkness
(04) 1576 - Castlevania: The Adventure
(05) 1591 - Castlevania II: Belmont’s Revenge
(06) 1600s - Castlevania: Order of Shadows
(07) 1691 - Castlevania
(08) 1698 - Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest
(09) 1748 - Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance
(10) 1792 - Castlevania: Rondo of Blood
(11) 1797 - Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
(12) 1798 - Nocturne in the Moonlight [radio drama] *
(13) 1800s - Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia
(14) 1830 - Castlevania: Circle of the Moon
(15) 1844 - Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness
(16) 1852 - Castlevania 64
(17) 1897 - Dracula *
(18) 1917 - Castlevania: Bloodlines
(19) 1944 - Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin
(20) 1999 - The Demon Castle Wars *
(21) 2035 - Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow
(22) 2036 - Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
(23) 2037 - Ricordanza of the God Abyss *
(24) 11th Millennium - Castlevania: Judgment 3D
* Included in visual novel style for the first time.
Konami would need to do very little work to make something like this happen, especially if they only updated Judgment to 3D (thus giving people an actual reason to play it and winning Konami some extra mileage out of a title that originally flopped). This would earn them serious bank from classic CV fans.
-
I'm assured 2013 will be a great year, but I'm worried about the future. Here's hoping a new exciting developer takes the reigns of the franchise (read: No IGA)
-
I'd like to see Castlevania back in the hands of Japanese development. Unlike many, I didn't have a huge issue with Igarashi's vision for the series. I know his retconning/unretconning of several chapters got under some fans' skin, but ultimately, I think he was finally trying to infuse the franchise with some story consistency in order to progress intelligently.
Let's face it... Konami seems a bit lost on what to do with certain franchises. I'm getting sick of Metal Gear, after it was supposed to end, like, three different times. Silent Hill has completely sucked since it went to Western development. Suikoden has been nothing but missed opportunities in the last couple generations. We should've had ZOE3 long ago. And frankly, I don't like seeing Lords of Shadow in some limbo between mainstream action games and the continuity of the original CV timeline.
Here's hoping that Konami makes my so-called Castlevania: Classic Timeline Anthology a reality, because something like that could really bring fans back to the series and possibly earn some new players in the process.
-
As always, just more classic Castlevanias like ReBirth. I highly doubt anything will happen this year since we're already getting two major releases, but once Mercury Steam is finished you have to wonder what will become of the series next?
-
We must be realistic, Castlevania had become a minority franchise for a small niche of followers.
-
apparently not as niche minority as Goemon or Suikoden has become, both haven't seen a fresh game in years
Castlevania however has had a steady flow of games every other year for the past 2 decades till now, hardly what i'd call a "minority/unpopular franchise"
-

2 millions as for the last game is not niche by any means.
The problem is Konami, really, they just don't have the marketing presence (Metal Gear and Winning Eleven sell by themselves). If Castlevania was Square Enix's series, for example, even with the same games only different promotion, I'm sure it would be what people call "a blockbuster".
But I like this sweet spot though.
As a "B-tier franchise" (but a spiritual A in our hearts) it doesn't depend on market research and accomodation, it doesn't depend on "5 million or BUST!" (As seen on Dead Space, Mirror's Edge, Battlefield, Homefront, Crysis) so it can take more liberties and, most importantly, it'll keep its "essence" dependant only of each development team, not the mainstream dudebro audience and lastest economic wave.
You know, I'm fine with this.

That's the Contra saga ;D

After Mercurysteam wraps up LoS this year, let's assume for a moment that Konami will return to the classic timeline (either with internal development or partnered with another Japanese studio). If so, what opportunities lie within the classic timeline for potential expansion?
I think the most obvious choice would be the Demon Castle Wars in 1999, since we know some of the basic plot as backstory of AoS/DoS. Similarly, Konami could flesh out the stories from the Symphony of the Night radio drama or the Ricordanza of the God Abyss novel. Or what if they made a Castlevania version of Dracula, since the novel itself is in public domain... Who wouldn't love playing as Quincey Morris, anyway?
They might also be able to fit an Ecclesia sequel in there, since the only dates specified are a generalized "1800s" time frame. Shanoa's pretty popular now, to boot. And of course, there's always more future settings they could explore.
But other than that, are there any gaps in the classic timeline that would allow for logical, non-contrived story arcs? I'd love to hear some opinions on this...
12th, 13th, or 14th centuries maybe?
-
I thought it was interesting how the PoR timeline hinted at a game that would explain why Elizabeth Bartley had to be revived in Bloodlines. She is described as a legendary vampire from the 16th century, so perhaps a side story set in that time period?
-
After Simon's Quest there seems to be another game taking place every 50 years or so (OoE is unclear, but following the trend I'd say it's probably mid-1800s), and 3 times in a 50 year period between Bram Stoker's novel, Bloodlines, and PoR.
The early years are much, much less cluttered, with at least 1 full 100 year resurrection (Belmont's Revenge to the original Castlevania), and ~97 years between Curse of Darkness and The Adventure. Though, personally, I'd like to keep it this way. It would be pretty disappointing if the "every 100 years he has a full resurrection" thing never happened. Though I've never been clear on if the 100 year cycle still brings him to full power even if it's been interrupted by premature resurrections.
Either way, my guess is they'd probably stick to the 1800s, maybe use the premature resurrections and lack of full power as an excuse of sorts for how non-Belmonts seem to be doing just as well against Dracula as many Belmonts did (Well, and almost all of them so far had help. And the vampire killer ritual.).
If we're going Dracula-less side stories, then there are a ton of opportunities. I don't know how others feel about it, but I wouldn't mind a side story explaining what the Belmonts were doing in their 200 years without the whip. Though I think I'd be happy just to have a new game.
-
id like to see more about the Belmonts between LoI and Dracula's Curse, tracking down Mathias and establishing themselves as Vampire Hunters.
-
I hope that LOS2 ends on a high note and that Castlevania moves on beyond it.
Hopefully a new dev team will take on Castlevania and stick closer to the source material in the next reboot.
I also hope that LOS2 ends this particular saga on a high note. Still, I don't mind Kojima Productions and Mercury Stream stepping away from the Castlevania source material. While I would like to see the return of 2D Metroidvania style gameplay and a similar tone to boot, I'm impressed by the current change in direction.

Meh, I didn't think any character pics would be large enough to make out as my avatar. I actually had Alucard up there but then immediately changed it because it looked like a smudge of mud.

Oh man, I totally forgot about the Weiss Belmont song. It was dumb as hell but it still made me grin.

there ya go :)
unfortunately there's no decent pics of Christopher. No one [professionally] has bothered to draw a proper version of him (aside from shitty manual illustrations & boxart). There's the Belmont Legacy comic version, but I feel that artstyle clashes with Castlevania's for being too, for lack of a better term, generic. They updated his sprite for Adventure ReBirth, they could've at least gave us new artwork as well >:(
Chris is always getting shafted, even in the LoS timeline :(

Speaking of Christopher Belmont and particular events we'd like to see... If I were to head up a Castlevania game (dude, that would be so awesome!) it would star Soleiyu Belmont. It would also deal a lot with how he was mind controlled. Soleiyu would have an intense hatred of Dracula, more so than any other Belmont, other than perhaps Leon. Weirdly enough, and I just thought of this a couple days ago, but I'd also like it to have a good love story with Soleiyu... but not with a normal woman. Some kind of servant of Dracula... maybe a Succubus or a Vampire. About mid game, the player would fight Dracula in his throne room traditional style, but would be forced to lose, and the Dracula servant would save Soleiyu's life somehow. I would write Dracula with a somewhat haughty and taunting personality, similar to his Rondo of Blood self, which would go along with his trolling of Soleiyu.
The final battle with Dracula would be more like Belmont's Revenge, taking place on a series of platforms, but way flashier. I was brainstorming all kinds of ideas while zoning out to this video from my boy Dracula9:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZYEsFBackQ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZYEsFBackQ)
... And you know I would bring back that path with kneeling skeletons as well as Road of Enemy #2.

A relationship with demonic beings who canonically become evil and gradually lose their human conscience, radically altering their minds?
Im supposing you had something like Rosa in mind, but those relationships never end well. Not to mention the afforementioned problem with it that LoI introduced.
-
A relationship with demonic beings who canonically become evil and gradually lose their human conscience, radically altering their minds?
Well, not all demons/monsters/vampires in the CV-verse are evil since I can list several who aren't.
On that note, it would be cool if they would make a Castlevania RPG where you could recruit demons in your party just like in Persona/Devil Summoner. I could already imagine a lot of enemies from the series that you could use in battle: Succubus, Imp, Pazuzu, etc. I could think of many more. They could also give all the monsters unique little personalities: Imp would constantly be giving wisecrack remarks, Succubus would be a gleeful sadist and a bit of a narcissist etc.
And this should be the battle music:
[Top 100 RPG Battle Themes] #68 - Devil Summoner (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTuz15Sq8zc#)
But that would be too awesome.

Castlevania: I'm hoping to finish at least one CV fan game between now and October. I have no faith left that Konami is going to make anything I want to play and actually release it here in the states. I'm looking at you, Castlevania the Arcade.
Personal: I'm hoping to find a nice goth/fetish chick who can put up with my near lack of a social presence on account of I have to spend most of my time working on my company. Beyond that, I hope to end 2013 with my company becoming at least moderately profitable so that I can quit working for other people by 2014. Of course I believe more in intent then hope so these are the things I'm going to make happen.

Give Castlevania to Fromsoft or Platinum Games.
Bring back Michiru Yamane
Place restraining order on David Cox for his blatant rape of Castlevania.
-
I hope for more 2D Castlevania games and I hope that Mirror of Fate is good!!!
PS: I know that this is impossible but I want 3 more GBA Castlevanias and 3 more for the DS :D :D :D

I wish developers would give even less attention for some unreasonable demands by fans. So far MS does a great job by creating their own vision of the series. I like it and hope future CV developers will follow this trend, not being afraid to experiment, but keeping the essence of the series intact. LOS did a good job at this department.

Hey there Zuljaras! I left a comment on your video for you :) Also, youtube links should embed automatically. Try putting an extra space between the picture and the youtube link.
EDIT: Oh wait that's part of your signature. In that case I don't know if you can (or should) embed it.
Also, welcome to the Dungeon!!!!

I wish developers would give even less attention for some unreasonable demands by fans.
I'll never understand your constant beratement of us fans as "unreasonable" or "insignificant." Since you've joined this forum it's almost as if you look down upon us for viewing Castlevania a certain way. We're the ones that have kept the series alive for so long and the term "fan-service" is exactly what the industry (especially Castlevania) thrives upon. It's fan response that get certain games made, why else in so many countless developer interviews the producer(s) always say "if you want [game], then tell us, the fans need to speak!" and WayForward even admitting "You want us to create a Castlevania? Send letters/tweets/campaigns to Konami and it just might happen!" Cox even said in interviews that "we've been listening to fan complaints of LoS1, what they did & didn't like, and are taking that into consideration with LoS2/MoF"
It was constant fan demand that got MM Legends 3 started (but not canceled, don't believe Capcom for a second it's "the fan's fault," more like industry politics & Inafune quitting "cut the head off the snake, and the body falls apart"). It was fan demand that got Marvel vs. Capcom 3 made. It was fan demand that got Rondo of Blood ported outside Japan (via DXC). Countless other examples of fans getting games ported/created.
They work for us, not the other way around, and we're the ones that decide whether a game ultimately succeeds or bombs. We have more power than we think. But of course you're retort will be something like "logically we don't matter cuz general consumers buy it blah blah, it's logic that they should adhere to, not whiny fans." I'm confident Castlevania will be in good hands again, by a team that doesn't completely ignore the source material like MS seemingly(intentionally?) did, but build upon it with a fresh take that leaves everyone happy with no intention on "alienating" anybody. That's the mark of a good development team. Prior to LoS' release Cox came off rather cocky (no pun intended) with quotes such as "this is our time now, you can hop aboard or be left behind," which is why many don't seem to like him very much (granted he's been back-peddling with MoF as he says it's designed to cater to "metroivania fans"). He's been borderline disrespectful (especially with his Twitter rants), although to his credit he has gotten a lot better and "friendlier" over time. The next producer needs to be the opposite of that. That's why I like IGA; his games aside, he's always humble & comes off as a genuine fan first, producer second. He recognizes he's not the best & sees his faults (there's a youtube video of him saying how he essentially "failed with LoI & CoD" and that "pisses the hell out of him," and he "strives to make a better experience" FOR THE FANS.) Cox comes off as "you don't like what we're doing? oh well, you don't matter," which is true, but also tarnishes his image. Not trying to turn this into a "cox/iga discussion" but just trying to make a point.
I know you're a "logical" dude, Sumac. But consider this; Einstein once said, "Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere." You [and the next CV developers] should remember that.

Give Castlevania to Fromsoft or Platinum Games.
Boy, I'd be all over that like white on rice.
insert speech here
Crisis, out of the many I've read, I believe you're the only one who's ever delivered the "company works for us, not the other way around" speech well, and not sounded like an asshat. So, kudos to you. :D
I do, however, agree with Sumac. To an extent. And by that, I mean I wish companies were more willing to take risks with their games (which is very hard these days considering the funds necessary to make a full retail game).
-
I just hope that the next take on CV would be good enough to shut up both sides of the IGA vs. COX pissing contest. :P
I hope we'll stop the eternal stupid debate of traditional/metroidvania vs. LoS.
God, I'm sick of this shit.
I was half-joking before, but truly, this "war" has grown to be tiresome. Were this a real war and I a soldier fighting for either side, I would drop my weapon and let myself be slain. And I am normally against suicide.

If I were in charge of the Castlevania series' direction post-MS, there are a few objectives I would shoot for immediately:
1) Consolidate the classic timeline for old fans to enjoy and new fans to catch up by putting a collection of all major titles on a single platform, probably 3DS or Vita.
2) Release a few fan favorites as cheap App Store downloads on iOS. It still baffles me that the only CV on iPad/iPhone is the EotN puzzler.
3) Commission a Castlevania edition of Bram Stoker's Dracula (a la Pride and Prejudice and Zombies), either as a paperback Limited Edition for preordering a future CV or as a hardcover collector's item for CV enthusiasts. I know, this is silly, but it would be a cool way to represent that part of the timeline officially and explain how the novel fits into CV's lore more specifically.
4) Since the previous items would satiate fans for a while, it would buy some time to start working on a massive new CV surrounding the Demon Castle Wars.
-
I just want another IGA game dammit. OoE was pretty cool. Although judging from much of his later interviews, he seemed pretty burned out working on it nonstop. (I'd be extra happy if he made a 3D game with competent level designers.)
Alternatively, if Metal Gear Revengeance sells bucketloads I'd love for Platinum Games to take a shot at it.
I could also get behind any home console port of The Arcade. Really want to try that one.
-
I promised myself not to do "multiple answers for a long post", but this time, I think, I can make an exception.
I'll never understand your constant beratement of us fans as "unreasonable" or "insignificant." Since you've joined this forum it's almost as if you look down upon us for viewing Castlevania a certain way.
I view some people here (and in any fandom) as curiosity denying common sense and business practices.
It is more or less true for some bigger series as Mario, Sonic or Final Fantasy, where amount of fans is enough to sell new games in the series, even if they quality is questionable at best (I think it's called sybdrome of "battered wife"). In case of Castlevania, and in case with most other series, companies keep producing new games for as long as they are profitable. No matter how much importance you put on yourself, companies will not keep making games for people, that not even sure what exactly do they want. After-LOS quarrels proved more than enough, that "Castlevania fandom" is rather disjointed community, that is very hard to please. The last events also have proved, that Konami care, first and foremost about profit, hence move from "metroidvania" to the new genre. Arcade and Pachislots are just for quick money. Konami already burned themselves, when they were listening to the fans and produced more and more "metroidvanias" that eventually nearly finished the series off for good. Obviously, they don't want to repeat the same mistake and went into another direction.
The bottome line: listening to the fans almost killed the series + community doesn't know what it want + Castlevania is succesful in a new form = there is no neccessity to listen to the oldschool fans. Face it - your time has gone.
I am not sure why you believe that fans had so much influence on those developments. MML3 was shut down despite whatever fans wanted. MvC3 was made to capitalize on fighting genre revival. ROB was included because it was rather simple to do so and it was thematically tied with DXC. If Konami listened to the fans, than ROB would have been ported much earlier and not as an afterthought for the bigger game package. Those examples convince me much more than anything, that companies behind them cared about profit, not fans. Or at least, didn't put fans before profit.
They work for us, not the other way around, and we're the ones that decide whether a game ultimately succeeds or bombs. We have more power than we think. But of course you're retort will be something like "logically we don't matter cuz general consumers buy it blah blah, it's logic that they should adhere to, not whiny fans."
No matter what fans think, they're not the ones making profit nowadays. Since that's the case all this talk about "how we have more power than we think" is meaningless. Companies were working for the fans in the past, when the games were smaller business. There weren't teams of hundred people working with multimillion budgets. Nowadays, things have changed. It is strange that somebody who consider himself so smart as you are, can't see the reality.
As for this talk about Cox...it looks like you trying to pass your personal displeasure with him as something bigger than life. For me it's a sign of immaturity and nothing else. He doesn't own anything to you personally and for the fandom in general. He was hired to create a good game. He did it. Questions?
Everything else could be marked as "he created the game - I don't like it - I will hate him for this". Now this is understandable. Not credible or constructive, but understandable. And rather logical. For the people like you, of course.
I know you're a "logical" dude, Sumac. But consider this; Einstein once said, "Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere." You [and the next CV developers] should remember that.
That is exactly why I don't want to see another "metroidvania" or "IGAvania" and why I support LOS-verse. It's much more creative comparing to what series was in the last decade. Latest "metroidvanias" were creative bankrupts in terms of gameplay and storylines. LOS maybe not the most original thing, when it comes to video games, but at least it doesn't needlesly abide to the old and tired formula and have more imaginative approach to the matter, rather then another "anime"-themed Castleroid with generic storyline about someone trying to ressurect Dracula and two best friends involved. But it seems some, less open-minded people confused it with "bertraying roots of the series". It is funny how IGA didn't received so much hate for doing exactly the same with AOS, DOS, POR and OOE, which mostly were Castlevanias in name only. It seems SOTN made a good job in blinding people, I must say.
Also, I must say I surprised that some people want to see Castlevania from Platinum Games. Do they really think that their Castlevania will be more "true to the roots" rather than LOS? All I see them creating is another mindless and stylish action as they always do. Not to say that it will not be good to the series (and that what ultimately matters), but does this approach screams more Castlevania for some people? Or it is just warped sense of hatred like "anything, but LOS will be better for the series"...Questions, questions...

*sigh* You just don't get it, Sumac, so I'm not even gonna respond to you. Good day.
I could also get behind any home console port of The Arcade. Really want to try that one.
I wonder what the reasoning for creating it in the first place was? Did a couple guys at Konami say "lets make a arcade game, but with Castlevania." I think IGA was involved to some extent, I remember reading on his Japanese blog him mentioning it's release. I think it was even brought stateside but at only a few venues cuz I remember reading some reviews from people who played it. It would've been reason enough for me to buy the PSMove. alkjfnw4

*sigh* You just don't get it, Sumac, so I'm not even gonna respond to you. Good day.
Believe what you want, Crisis, even that companies own you something. But don't be dissappointed, when reality kicks in. End of line.

The moral of the story, folks, is that debating with people like Sumac usually goes like this, so don't waste your time:
No no no Donkey - Family Guy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fqs9DYisSsg#ws)
Coincidently, it's ironic you were temporarily banned from this forum at one point for acting like a donkey. But I digress..
1) Consolidate the classic timeline for old fans to enjoy and new fans to catch up by putting a collection of all major titles on a single platform, probably 3DS or Vita.
3DS is more likely since the Vita has been slagging in sales (dare I say bombed? I still would like to purchase one tho, the hardware is amazing). And it's more feasable to release the classic NES games on the e-Shop. Why haven't they done this yet is anyone's guess, considering CV1-3D has been showcased damn near a year ago.
2) Release a few fan favorites as cheap App Store downloads on iOS. It still baffles me that the only CV on iPad/iPhone is the EotN puzzler.
Order of Shadows perhaps? Still haven't played it.
This is a great idea actually. I always envisioned the events of 1897 to be in game form, but a visual novel or manga depicting these events in the CV-world might turn out better, while paying tribute to Bram Stoker's version. I'd love to see this happen!

Because being realistic is stupid.
OK, so be it. Maybe lying to yourself make you feel better, I am not sure. How they say: better sweet lie, than sad truth. I haven't seen any convincing argument from you, only: "I believe we have power!!" Yeah, great. For the propaganda or self-persuasion, not so much for the real world we happened to live in.
Also, for somebody who considers himself so smart, you insults are childish. ;)
Have fun.

In Reply To #72,
Perhaps you should stick to reviewing games before Jorge gets involved in your incessant condescending ramblings (again).
In Reply To #73,
I like civily debating with my fellow Dungeonites, been doing so for years & I respect everybody here, but sometimes when someone comes along & tries to subtly insult the fanbase [multiple times], I see through that BS & I'll call them out on it. I earned my Trollmeister award for a reason ;D

Because being realistic is stupid.
Isn't this the kind of attitude that got you banned?
Is it really that impossible for you to not make sarcastic and condescending remarks towards a fanbase?
jeeeez.

I am sorry, but you are bad "Trollmeister". So far you haven't called me out on anything, but well, if you feel better by thinking that you did... ;)
If you seriously want to proove something for me...well I'll give that chance. After all, I am always trying to understand people around me. Write me in PM, so we can continue this discussion. Though, I am afraid that without audience it will not have any meaning to you. ;)
Cheers and salute.

Don't do it, last time i had a pm conversation with Sumac we compared man-boob sizes. He won.

A relationship with demonic beings who canonically become evil and gradually lose their human conscience, radically altering their minds?
Im supposing you had something like Rosa in mind, but those relationships never end well. Not to mention the afforementioned problem with it that LoI introduced.
Not really... if I understood you correctly. It's more about a being who was evil but starts becoming good. There would be no allusions to whatever humanity she may or may not have had. She would originally just appear as a boss, but things would start taking interesting turns.
Also, I don't know if the relationship would end up smoothly or not. But it would be interesting!
I would like to break out of the typical conventional storytelling Castlevania often uses, thus having a Belmont get whipped up on by Dracula, and having him fall for an evil seductive monster woman instead of trying to rescue a blonde damsel. I guess something similar happened with Alucard and Sonia, but it was so elementary, uninteresting, and in that case with those characters, a terrible idea, in my opinion.
I would also do some other things that aren't typically seen...
---
Risk taking and experiments aren't inherently bad. Symphony of the Night and Simon's Quest are both the result of that and I love those games. But most people don't want to see the series look, sound, and feel very unfamiliar. Most don't want to see its identity washed away. It's true that the MS games are a different and new approach (for CV, at least), but it's totally the wrong kind of different and new, in my opinion. As far as I can recall, none of us were asking for orcs and the like in our Castlevania. From what I can tell, most were pretty okay with the general aesthetic going on prior to LoS (save for the anime art). We just wanted games that were of a much more competent and fresh caliber, especially in the 3-D sector. OoE was really headed in the right direction to me, but it could have done without the generic DS-Vania look and presented a new style (that's where I say things like time and budget get in the way). That's not to say that I think changing artistic direction in some regards would be a bad idea. I would be alright with that if what was presented was great and appropriate for the series.

I actually don't think the original aesthetic was a problem. Let's bring up an interesting question. Was the look of LoS one of it's most defining factors that made it sell well? If it, let's play the "what if" wheel, had the same general look and style of classic CV games, classic monsters and such, but retained the same gameplay and story, would it have fared different? And before someone steps in and plays the "But, LoS's success was a combo effort of everything, not just one part", let me stop you mid stride and just say, with an open mind, "WHAT IF?". No "but"s, but "what if?". Would've adding more classic looking enemies really harm LoS? Would having more classic CV-styled music hurt it considerably? Would more classic platforming, less shimmying/grappling but a dent in it's mainstream popularity?
I assume he's had plenty of practice. I believe I've been on other forums that he's "been in charge of."
Jorge is one of the most patient administrators I've ever seen in any forum/message board I've ever went to. Believe me, and many here would back me up, there are some guys out there who would perma-ban peeps for some of the antics that go on here in half a thought.

The condescending ramblings do need to end.
Sumac, the fact that you're still under Watched status (the moderation is still watching over your posts) means that you have to take care of the words you use. This also means that, at times, you have to just shut the hell up instead of letting your baser instincts get to you.
By the way, I actually agree with you; the companies' top priority is to be profitable, and Castlevania's divisive factors will continue to prevent it from being profitable (just not popular in Japan, struggling to find a stable identity, attempting to cover so many holes from 'fighting game' to 'multi-person adventure' to 'puzzle game', etc.).
But you're a total ass in the way you explain yourself.
And since you've been banned before, you are considered a repeat offender. Next time you have a thought about responding in a condescending way... in fact, next time you have anything to say about the community at all... let the thought go and post about something else, will you? I'm tired of telling you and I will not be telling you again.
This thread has become poisonous. I'm not going to clean up people's posts but I have had the thought to come around and do so. I think you guys all need to take a step back, use the new year to think of something positive to say and let go of this incessant pettiness.

I don't have a huge issue with LoS, but as a long-time fan of CV, I have a difficult time accepting it into the franchise. Taken by itself, it's a good action game, if a bit linear. But compared to heavyweights like God of War and Bayonetta, it doesn't do anything especially innovative for the third-person action genre. And since it also doesn't fit into the existing Castlevania timeline, it just makes the whole experience feel a bit pointless. Nevertheless, it manages to make respectable nods to other games in the series. LoS2 promises more non-linear elements, which may satisfy that Metroidvania level design that fans crave, but I'd also like the combat mechanics to be more intuitive and responsive. Knowing that LoS is a limited spin-off that will end after one more console title and a handheld release makes the shift in direction easier to accept on some level, but for the same reason, it makes me feel like there's no need to get invested in the whole thing. In short, LoS is not bad, but it doesn't offer enough in either direction (hardcore old-school fandom vs innovative next-gen action) to win unanimous support. That's why it has become such a debatable entry in the series. Am I right?
Secondly, as for the art style debate... For years, I have wanted to see the games move closer to Ayami Kojima's artwork, whether that meant more detailed 2D sprites and more frames of animation or 3D models with stylized textures and cel shading. I used to be a much bigger fan of anime in the late 80s to mid-90s, but the contrast between AoS and DoS in their shift from Kojima to anime (even within a single story arc, for crying out loud) was too stark to ignore. It especially sucks because DoS was among the best CV titles for its gameplay. I thought LoS did a respectable job of visually representing CV's classic aesthetics, as you could almost imagine it as the next-gen evolution of Super Castlevania IV, but even so, it still slipped backwards towards a more generic medieval style. The anime style is a bit generic too, though it's on the opposite end of the blandness spectrum. That's why Ayami Kojima's style, which mixes realism with Renaissance artistry, Victorian opulence with a hint of anime edginess, works so well for Castlevania. After all, CV was created by the Japanese based on Western inspirations, something that Kojima's style conveys perfectly.
Finally, I do not believe that fans totally control the direction of Castlevania, and I don't believe that Konami owes us anything in particular (or as Sumac likes to say, "OWNS us something"...). However, I believe that CV has become a franchise that is too long-running for Konami to ignore while also being slightly antiquated from the mainstream perspective, perhaps due to its adherence to classic formulas. That means that the mainstream masses often ignore the classic Metroidvania releases, thus making them look like financial failures, while LoS does better with arguably generic, GoW-clone cinematic action. Ultimately, I think Konami listens to its fans to dynamically figure out what to try next, but due to the modest returns on most installments, they don't always put their best effort (read: funding) towards the next experiment.
Think about it. Konami felt like CV had to move towards 3D in order to stay successful, so they created LoI and CoD. But that dissatisfied long-time fans and didn't do anything to gain new third-person action fans. Fail. So Konami looked for a viable way to deliver the classic Metroidvania style in an innovative way, which led back to handhelds. Those were good, but handhelds weren't necessarily the platform of choice for hardcore fans who were still interested in the Metroidvania gameplay. Partial fail. They turned back to consoles and decided to test the network waters with a multiplayer-capable throwback to fan-favorite characters and settings, but that did nothing to interest the players who were accustomed to soloing their way through the puzzle-filled, carefully mapped corridors of CV classics. Unsurprising fail. It's not surprising that Konami would turn to outsourcing an entry or two with LoS in order to take an objective look at what they needed to do to move forward. If nothing else, LoS has provided some insight and perspective on what fans want, gotten them more vocal on both sides of the debate, and even managed to get a few new people involved. And fortunately, since LoS IS in a different timeline, it would not have damaged the CV legacy even if it had been received poorly.
Personally, I think Konami will continue searching for a way to make Castlevanias that can satisfy its existing fanbase while offering enough cinematic flair and compelling action to drive mainstream sales. Igarashi may or may not have the ability to do that, but I applaud his efforts to make consolidated sense of the timeline. Also, say what you will about Pachislot, but the fact is, it's a multi-billion-yen industry in Japan, provides tons of extra revenue, and is taken quite seriously by aging players who hold more disposable income to drive the broader gaming market. The Arcade is also an oddity, but I fully expect to see it announced as a Wii U or Kinect port in the next TGS (maybe earlier).
Castlevania may never completely satisfy both sides of the old-school vs mainstream debate, but Konami won't permanently retire one of the longest-running franchises in console gaming history. Instead, they will remain consistent only in their inconsistency, continuously testing market niches that can contain the series while generating respectable profits. Fan opinion will certainly weigh into that, as well, but it's not the final word on the subject. Still, we DO hold some degree of influence, and our discussions here can be productive and influential.

I love Kojima's artstyle, and for those people that say she could only draw "womanly" faces in all her portraits (granted she's guilty of a handful, but not as much as people make it seem), they've obviously never looked at Santa Lilio Sangre; that artbook is chock-full of many different unique character designs, all well-suited for Castlevania. Hell, the book could've been titled "Castlevania: A Visual Guide" and everyone would be singing praises.
The artstyle of LoS is confusing to me. At times it seems it's consistent with what it wants to look, and other times there's representations that clashes with the same style it uses. I don't know if that was done intentionally or otherwise. For instance,

^these are excellent artworks that absolutely scream Castlevania. I love them and the artist really hit the mark with these.
then there's the generic uninspired stuff like this:

(sorry for all you Lord of the Rings naysayyers but the similarities are undeniable)
I'm not even gonna post examples of the CG orcs & goblins. Had they marketed the game with this concept art alone, then I doubt anyone here could tell it was gonna be a Castlevania game. Then there's the static comic-book-y images they used for the DLC but I'm not gonna get into that. The sketch-like images for the beastiary & character profiles were nice, I liked them a lot, but that's just what they were, sketches. I expect that type of stuff in a "making-of" artbook, rather than in-game. The character portraits should've looked more "refined" and polished*, but that's just me. Perhaps in LoS2 it'll be this way.
Hopefully in LoS2 they stick to 1 distinct artstyle, and from the looks of it, it's shaping up nicely.
*The art they did for pre-vampire Carmilla (http://lazyreviewzzz.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/castlevania-lords-of-shadow-reverie-Carmilla-concept-art-1280px-50p.jpg) was excellent, imo
-
I loved the Bestiary and Character images. I feel like that is the definitive art style that Los WANTS to have, but ultimately doesnt really deliver on due to trying to be realistic at the same time.
-
I hope and dream to be genuinely excited about Castlevania again. I haven't felt that way in a long time.
-
Yes, no, maybe so. :-\
Agreed but you're being very unfair here. Lament of Innocence and Curse of Darkness didn't add anything to the third-person action genre that GoW didn't do already. And even the 2D Castlevania's didn't do much that wasn't already done by Zelda and Metroid. Castlevania's strong points have never been in innovation, but rather the perfection of already existing genres and play-styles.
And since it also doesn't fit into the existing Castlevania timeline, it just makes the whole experience feel a bit pointless.
I think "identity" was the issue with Lords lackluster reception, not it's place in the timeline.
Am I right?
Yes and no. The N64 games were really awful, just the worst games in the entire series and yet you still find a number of marks who think those games were awesome when they were textbook shit. I do think you are correct in that LoS does not offer much to the hardcore or old-school Castlevania fans to become really invested into the entry but I don't think it's due to length rather it's just basically another God of War clone. Lords of Shadow really didn't have much, if anything, that separated it from GoW in terms of gameplay. The music was great yes, the art was amazing yes, but we were basically playing as Kratos Belmont. Even though there were similarities between Castlevania and other titles on the market there were always enough differences to make Castlevania feel unique - that was until the Lords of Shadow entry. And while I really did enjoy the day and night settings of Lords of Shadow and some meager globe-trotting which was also a nice touch, it didn't exactly feel like Castlevania from an environment standpoint. CoD allowed you to traverse the countryside and it still felt very much like Castlevania due largely in part to the art style and the tone that art gave off. The team at Kojima Productions put together gorgeous environments but those environments were missing the horror and sinister feel you need in a Castlevania.
I agree with you in most of your points, especially about the generic anime design of certain titles. The only part where I disagree with you is the comment about the "generic medieval style." I personally don't have an issue with that because that's the style the game opened with. Don't get me wrong, I hold Kojima's style in much, much higher regard but I just don't have any issue with the generic medieval design of CV.
and I don't believe that Konami owes us anything in particular
I'm sorry to hear that. No offense but your mindset - that companies don't owe us - is the reason the industry is in the mess it's in today. Legions of fans have supported companies like Konami, Capcom, Square-Enix, Sega, and EA for years and yeah they do owe us a hell of a lot because we made them what they are today. If we didn't buy their games they wouldn't exist. Period. For more than a decade these companies knew they owed us a whole hell of a lot because they knew we made them. During this particular console generation however these companies changed their attitude and felt, somehow, through some self-appointed delusion that they no longer owe us. Hence the reason that Capcom, Sega, Square-Enix, and EA have started to screw their fans. And the fans have responded to this arrogance by not buying their shit. Capcom and Square-Enix have seen all of their properties take a hit financially and EA has been no stranger to criticism. Sega didn't even have enough money to develop Bayonetta 2 hence the deal between them and Nintendo and I can assure you that the only reason, the only reason Konami hasn't caught hell from the fans is because Konami knows they owe us. Fans say they want more Metal Gear so Konami tells their teams to get to work. Fans say they want more Castlevania so Konami kicks in Cox's door and tells him to get er done. Konami is still commercially successful because they are doing what's good for business and what is good for business is keeping your fanbase happy. Do some research and look at all the publishers who have caught hell this console generation from their fans. You're going to see massive amounts of hate towards Capcom, Square-Enix, and EA and you're going to see comparable decline in their interest of their flagship properties. Now if you look at Konami's fanbase it's still pretty sizeable from MGS alone and that's because Konami keeps their fans happy. Their business kinda depends on it. If you don't believe me look at Capcom's and Square-Enix's fall from grace brought on by the ideology "We don't owe our fans anything."
Ultimately, I think Konami listens to its fans to dynamically figure out what to try next, but due to the modest returns on most installments, they don't always put their best effort (read: funding) towards the next experiment.
I'll agree with that.
If nothing else, LoS has provided some insight and perspective on what fans want, gotten them more vocal on both sides of the debate, and even managed to get a few new people involved. And fortunately, since LoS IS in a different timeline, it would not have damaged the CV legacy even if it had been received poorly.
Will LoS provide insight into what fans want? No. No it won't. Part of the reason is because Lords was meant to appeal to the mainstream audience. Hence the reason it had more in common with GoW than CV. Konami already knows what the fans want. However, Konami wants to get a bigger share of that mainstream market which is where companies "think" their profits need to come from nowadays. Castlevania was basically GoW-lite and even the mainstream GoW audiences didn't buy it like hotcakes because they just played a GoW starring a guy named Kratos rather than Gabriel.
Personally, I think Konami will continue searching for a way to make Castlevanias that can satisfy its existing fanbase while offering enough cinematic flair and compelling action to drive mainstream sales.
Yeah but it won't work. Final Fantasy XIII and Resident Evil 6 were monumental disasters born out of those respective publishers need to appeal to both newcomers and longtime fans.
Castlevania may never completely satisfy both sides of the old-school vs mainstream debate, but Konami won't permanently retire one of the longest-running franchises in console gaming history.
That's what people said about Capcom and Mega Man.
I'll end my contribution to this topic by tackling the main question which is Hopes and Dreams for 2013 - but I'll gear this towards Castlevania as a series. I really hope that Konami abandons this poisonous model of trying to appeal to everyone. Because even if a person has no business acumen they know that when you try to please everyone you don't please anyone. The reception of Resident Evil 6 and Final Fantasy XIII are more than enough proof of that. I hope that Konami establishes what type of fanbase they want CV to focus on before they shelf this series like Capcom did with Mega Man (and what Sega should have done a decade ago with Sonic). Atlus has proven that you don't have to make your properties mainstream just to stay profitable and I hope Konami follows their model when it comes to Castlevania.

However, I believe that CV has become a franchise that is too long-running for Konami to ignore while also being slightly antiquated from the mainstream perspective, perhaps due to its adherence to classic formulas.
In case of being non-profitable series, I am afraid, Konami will not have problems with shutting down Castlevania for good or relagating it for the japanese-only Pachislots and the like. That's why I am arguing that LOS, while maybe not for everyones taste, is a good thing - it allow frachise to exist as something rather than arcade machines and could positively influence the next games. Especially if the LOS2 / MOF will be profitable.
Don't do it, last time i had a pm conversation with Sumac we compared man-boob sizes. He won.
What is this, I don't even... :o
The N64 games were really awful, just the worst games in the entire series and yet you still find a number of marks who think those games were awesome when they were textbook shit.
To each its own. I never have problems with controls or camera in those games. OST and atmosphere are awesome, though its rather deattached from any other Castlevania in style. It's more closer to horror game, that most of the series ever was.

It was true in the past. Gamers were a somewhat separated group on their own and there were a lot of different hardware with their own library of games. Nowadays, when gaming become "just another entertainment available to everyone" and choices in gaming hardware are rather limited (and more often then not same games are available on different platforms in the same quality) there is a new group emerged - general gaming audience who just want to play games for fun and they don't care about how true another entry to its roots. Catering to that audience - is the way to survive for the biggest players. Since Konami is the big player (or at least considers itself like this) it is obvious which course of action it will take. In the end MGS is not enough to sustain them and Silent Hill...went down the drain according to many people. They need some other BIG series to be profitable (preferably that is already famous) and, I guess, Castlevania is their only choice at the moment.

I agree with that. The current console generation is without the doubt the worst one. Two reasons: 1) Mainstream gamers who are afraid of innovation and 2) Publishers that devalue innovation. Case in point, last year the president of Square-Enix told his employees that they would no longer be developing any non-mainstream games. So while that's OK for Final Fantasy fans (even though the series has gone woefully downhill) that's bad news for anyone interested in SE's ridiculously huge, see HUGE library of titles which will never see sequels, prequels, remakes, reboots, etcetera. Companies have no issue axing properties the moment they are no longer finanicaly viable.

Well that's the same hole Lords of Shadow falls into isn't it. On it's own it's a good game. It just isn't a model Castlevania game.

That's working great for Square-Enix.

I wonder if it would help them if they started acquiring properties that developers have (had) but aren't doing anything with. I know Legacy of Kain has a sizable fanbase and I would love to see that series in the hands of Konami.

I agree with that. The current console generation is without the doubt the worst one
My personal take on that situation is that VG business is such a clumsy colossus nowadays, that it will inevitably collapse under its own weight, in one form or the other. Then, industry will be revitalized, much like it happen back in 1983.
Well that's the same hole Lords of Shadow falls into isn't it. On it's own it's a good game. It just isn't a model Castlevania game.
I am tottaly OK with the idea of multiple good Castlevanias, that don't have one single style. If modern part of the series consisted only from the games like CV64, LOI and LOS it would have been a very nice situation for me. Games would provided different experience, but carrying the same basic genes of their predeccesors. Basically doing the same as classicvanias, but on a larger scale.
For me it's much more preferable option then the clone-hoard.
That's working great for Square-Enix.
And Sonic, I dare say. ;D
-
I dont see how Sonic caters to the mainstream audience. Seems like ever since Sonic 06, (ever since Shadow The Hedgehog if you really want to get into semantics about the downhill turn) theyve been trying hard to regain the fans trust and faith and cater to them.

Yea, Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations is pretty much proof of this if you ask me.

I don't agree with you much Sumac, but I also believe this to be true. I do blame HD gaming. Costs to make games are more expensive now than ever, so developers are trying to earn back their costs(and then some) by catering to the popular trend. It's like a gamer's Tower of Babel, each tier gets smaller and smaller as you go up, until it's become so small, just a slight gust of wind will cause it to topple over. It IS the perfect situation to pair with the classic saying, "The bigger you are, the harder you fall!". Maybe we need it to fall, though. Usually, when the large fall, for that second of humility also comes perspective.
-
Well if history has shown us anything, it was that the fall of a video-gaming giant (Atari) has happened before. Contributing to it was a bloated market of generic crap and an over-abundance of consoles. We don't have an over-abundance of consoles, but we do have loads of generic crap (just look at the typical EA title or how our generation spawned a shit-ton of MMO's and those quasi-realistic FPS games). The result was the rise of Nintendo from the ashes and a relatively golden age of gaming. Now, if that does happen again who knows what company will rise from the ashes and take the helm? Atari never ever regained the dominance it had with the market, but perhaps Nintendo or Sony will still survive just like Atari did, even if it is as a shadow of what they used to be.
-
I personally think that Sony and MicroSoft will surivive "the fall" - there are not limited to VG business only. As for Nintendo...
Sorry, about Sonic remark, I musunderstood about it. Squenix and Sega can have profit creating any kind of games under FF and Sonic brands respectively.

Just you watch. when the industry crashes- a lone figure will will be seen rising from the rubble.
SEEEEEGAAAA
I still think it would be awesome if sega came back to the console game
-
That's very possible, Flame-chan. Look at SNK's situation; didn't they go bankrupt but pulled themselves from the ashes? And NeoGeo, they just released a new console/handheld! Yeah it's basically ports of old games but still
SEGA should release a new handheld (not like those third-party "30 Sega games in 1 system!" handhelds that are available). A brand-new handheld with brand-new games. But unfortunately it would most likely turn out like the Vita o.o
-
My signature will forever be a mystery, passed down through internet lore for ages.
Anyways, Sega hasn't really properly marketed anything since the Genesis days. Kind of like if Konami made a console.
-

Heh, not in a million years. ;)
I still think it would be awesome if sega came back to the console game.
I think it's in Sega's best interest to avoid another catastrophe, especially with the way things have gone on over there recently.

That may be true, but we've seen some outstanding hardcore, unconventional titles transcend this issue in the current generation. Demon's Souls is the prime example, flourishing in the West through word-of-mouth despite its relative lack of Sony [Japan] support and zero marketing. Atlus itself has some strong examples in its Persona series, which always make the most of a small budget and often manage to deliver better gameplay than the multi-million-dollar Final Fantasy entries of late. Digital distribution through Steam, PSN, and XBL has re-opened the doors for smaller studios and greatly revitalized retro gaming. And we've seen a revival of 2D fighters and side-scrolling platformers that would suggest that many gamers still value gameplay over cinematic presentation.
Perhaps we need another bold SotN-type scenario to revive Castlevania properly. What I mean by that is this... SotN came out at a time when 3D seemed practically mandatory for 32-bit disc-based platforms, boasted some decidely old-school mechanics, yet made the most of SS/PSX technology by dropping in pieces of 3D, beautifully smooth sprite work, and deep layers of parallax.
If Konami bravely crafted an HD 2.5D Castlevania for consoles, using traditional side-scrolling gameplay mixed with 3D assets, this would make several things possible:
1) Development costs would be drastically lower than that of a fully 3D game.
2) Hardcore old-school fans would appreciate the construct of traditional Metroidvania titles, but mainstream gamers could enjoy HoD-esque cooperative connectivity and the cinematic presentation that 3D assets would allow.
3) 3D assets would also allow complete visual customization of characters, perhaps even full character creation.
4) Ecclesia's world map system could be evolved and incorporated to lend more non-linear exploration to the game, which has almost become a prerequisite for games with RPG elements.
5) Side-scrolling games often allow for greater detail in level design because they don't suffer the spacial issues and technical limitations of full-3D with a roaming/controllable camera, thus allowing the visual style to be more unique, perhaps even moving closer to Ayami Kojima's artwork with the right filters/shaders.
There are other advantages, as well, but such a game could be released on a limited edition retail basis with a stronger focus on digital distribution [to bloat profits considerably, with less overhead to boot]. Slightly lower-res handheld editions would also be possible, so innovations like cross-platform play might be possible. It would be a gamble, for sure, but would it really be more risky than the entries we've seen in the last decade? I doubt it.
-
Yeah I was about to say similar myself... You cant quite lump all of "HD Gaming" into one whole. Theres quite a few "HD" sidescrolling games on the likes of Xbox and such which cost 20$ or less, and deliver on beautiful visuals and gameplay. Even many HD "console" releases are cheaper if purchased online for download, because it cuts out the middle man of distribution through physical medium, which boosts the cost up significantly.
HD gaming isnt the problem itself, IMO, the problem is how "big budget" everything has become and how much money companies expect to make. From the games, to the consoles. Remember the PS3 Starting price? that shit was steep. Thats the kind of thing that effectively killed smaller consoles back in the day, like the 3DO. It's also the reason the Wii was so damn successful. It offered AMAZING potential with (for the time anyway,) innovative technology, and pretty damn good system capabilities, even though many games didnt really know how to properly utilize the full extent of the system. (Some of the later Wii games almost match up to PS3/360 graphical quality- just look at a game like Sonic Colors)
-
Well as it's been said before, one of the worst effects of the mainstreamization of games over the last decade, something usually viewed as positive, is the death of the mid-level studio. It's increasingly the case that you're either a Goliath like Capcom, or you're a tiny Indie dev team- or you're going out of business. Hudson*, THQ, many other midsize developers have not been able to sustain themselves in the face of rising production costs and a fickle, unpredictable market. Konami, who I guess you could say was one of the "major minors" back in the day, is trying to prevent falling in this trap... but with the large volume of shovelware they've put out in recent years and what appears to be an insane wo/man in charge of marketing, this effort is having mixed results to put it mildly.
*Which was swallowed up by Konami in fact, in a case of the kind of bigger-fish-eats-smaller-fish behavior we see so often from EA.
-
i hope LoS2 sets up to tie in classics like Sonia, Trevor and even Chris! I also hope they announce a sequel to CoTM

In general it's a problem of how businesses have more a culture of economic growth over simply sustaining themselves. It's like no one is satisfied unless their growth reaches a certain level. it's a travesty if the next game doesn't make double what the last one made. It's the root of a whole lot of the problems with economics now a days. It started in the nineties with the advent of the idea on wallstreet that *greed is good* for the economy. We can all see where that has lead things. Fortunately for the game industry we have a strong indie sector to push innovation.
-
Yeah, HD gaming ISN'T the problem, but the whole big budget projects are. Most of the games I've enjoyed this gen tend to be downloadable games(which is sad, actually). They are, in my humble opinion, what's right with modern gaming. I think the problem with HD gaming is bot the developers aiming for more mainstream popularity, though also the whole(which isn't new) believe people have that "big budget = good game".
It's the same thing with Hollywood. If it's a movie from big name studio, or has lots of A-list actors attached, people blindly walk in like it's a sure thing. These same people pass by a lot of indie movies simply BECAUSE they aren't "Universal" movies or "Paramount" or "Warner Bros" or "Disney". You see that sort of thinking with gamers too. It's a form of thinking that needs to be broken, IMO. Games should be judged on how good they are, not how large their budgets are. A good game, be it big budget or small budget, is good nonetheless, but just because a game has a big budget doesn't make it good. It's the whole "don't judge a book by it's cover", though I'd add, "Don't just a product based on it's price or name brand label".
But yeah, it's odd how I've become less of a mainstream gamer this gen than previous ones. Just the whole situation of seeing a lot fo companies(good companies) go under because they couldn't compete with high budget games, and lots of great franchises being forgotten(either by their developers shutting down, or by big developers who saw them as being not profitable by mainstream taste and cast them aside like some unwanted step-child), it just left a big bitter taste in my mouth. It's disgusting, and to talk to various gamers who are alright with that in various forums, how people could just say, "Oh well!", it's TOTALLY sickening. >:( Those kinda of gamers make me ashamed to even be a gamer. God, just hit the reset bomba!

It is hard to satisfy those 2 groups of people especially CV fans. There is a huge divide that I see just by browsing the forum.

I hope that the Lords of Shadows saga comes to an end in a somewhat satisfactory way so that fans of LoS can be happy and Konami give it closure and returns the saga to in house produced games. And if that can't happen, I'd choose Wayforward for taking Castlevania (with Jake Kaufman as the composer, of course, following the style of Dusk Falls). A second option could be Platinum.
-
It seems my previous post received a negative...
I wasn't trying to be rude to LoS fans, I said that so they can be happy and after that Konami returns to what it was, because that is what I wish.
But if anyone felt offended by my commentary, these are my apologies.
I respect what everyone thinks.
-
Abd once again - do you really think, that Platinum will make a good Castlevania, when it comes to style of the game?
-
If it turns out like Bayonetta, in matters of music, gameplay and look of the game, at least I would like it. I'm talking for myself, of course. But I liked Bayonetta.

What's wrong with WayForward? O_o;
Great graphics and visual style but they are, ehm, how can I say it, too old school? I mean, their games are primitive and not very varied, contra was good for nostalgic value but would you like the anticipated entry of your favorite series being almost an old school remake? hmm.. Silent Hill Book of Memories was their first non-old school game, and look how that turned out.
I mean, they are a GREAT choice for a Classic-Vania a la Rebirth, almost too perfect, but I think the mainline series is somewhat bigger and far from their scope.
-
With all respect, I really would like my long anticipated Castlevania for the main timeline having retro graphics, those beautiful, beautiful 2D sprites we always loved until not so long ago (Order of Eclessia?), and of course, having the music that defines Castlevania as a saga, which I'm now missing so, so much these last years (be it Michiru Yamane or other composer... Jake Kaufman is perfect for the task in my humble opinion).
-
Platinum? Oh yes.
Way Forward? Oh no.
I think WayForward could do alright, provided they're strictly disallowed from just making it Bloodrayne Betrayal 2. Ain't nothing wrong with another 2D game, but I don't want to have to worry about comboing shit and learning a thousand different melee moves.
Besides, they made Contra 4. Contra 4.
Would prefer Platinum though. We need more good 3D entries.
-

Honestly, I think the past ten years should be solid proof that we're looking at two development styles -- 3D for consoles, 2D for handhelds. But we know that KONAMI's never made a fully satisfying 3D Castlevania on their own, Platinum hasn't made any 2D side-scrollers, and WayForward hasn't demonstrated any ability to make decent 3D games.
So why not have two teams? IGA's Konami team (or) WayForward for the 2D handheld Metroidvanias, and Platinum for the 3D console entries...
Personally, I would love to see WayForward's treatment of the series, especially since they've stayed true to Aliens and Contra source material before. But that's only if IGA can't/won't take over again.
-
Someone hasn't played Shantae: Risky's Revenge.
-
I have a passion for the old style as well , but dang I just want the series to move forward Let's not retread old tracks for nostalgia or something we need new concepts and fresh ideas like what has not been done in a 2d cv or how can the series improve upon the postive aspects of the 3d games. Lets just go towards a straight line.
-
If they're wanting to try new things, maybe KONAMI could get WayForward to produce a ContraVania crossover sub-series...
-
If they're wanting to try new things, maybe KONAMI could get WayForward to produce a ContraVania crossover sub-series...
Not contra...
Something morer in lines of say ghost and goblins or zelda if it is anything I learned in the past couple of day it's that crossove no matter how can work but cv and contra even that would be left field maybe suikoden would fit better?
-
What? Castlevania and Contra are connected at the hip just like Transformers and G.I. Joe! I mean, I was only half-serious anyway, but there's nothing "left-field" about combining two franchises that have been subject to countless cross-promotional efforts in the last 26 years.
-
Speaking of cross overs, I'd love a new Wai Wai World type game. Bring some attention back not only to Castlevania, but other classic Konami games/franchises that haven't had as much attention in recent years.
If they're bringing Castlevania and Contra together again, might as well throw in Goemon, Getsu Fuma, and some other "washed up" Konami stars and make a party out of it. Sparkster would be a nice addition, and since I believe Konami owns Bomberman he could be worked in, too. Hell, they could even bring Django from the Boktai series back.

I do not agree with a cv/contra crossover it makes no sense to me at least just the two together. ones aliens ones demons so something like fuma makes more sense since their in the same setting with the monsters and stuff as well as suikoden since that series has a vamp themselves. So if anything contra would be better of having a crossover with gradius, but a konami wai wai world reboot would work since it brings together different franchises and meshes them well.

I want truly-authentic medieval Castlevania, based on folk-tales. "Real" Castlevania without double-jumps, super attacks what can destroy the world, Dracula who turns into gargoyle (why??!!). No talking horses and no titans!

those beautiful, beautiful 2D sprites we always loved
And were reused for like 10 years in multiple games... Anything, but that. Anything.

You want a more medieval CV based on folk-tales? Isn't that what LoS was? Either that, or you want "Brothers Grimm: The Game"(maybe not solely based on the movie, but you get my drift).
Me, personally, I just want a more return to classic horror form. I could care less if they abandon the medieval period. Actually, I think the whole dwelling on medieval-setting hinders the horror elements. It becomes more about being medieval horror than horror horror. I want my classic horror movie inspirations, maybe a darker take on them, as well as some modern horror movie inspirations(like Leatherface in OoE) and nods. As far as setting is concerned, I've been aching for something set post-medieval(just so we don't have that setting around to put a crimp in the overall feel of the game), maybe Baroque, Enlightenment or Victorian eras.
-
And were reused for like 10 years in multiple games... Anything, but that. Anything.

With all respect, I'm OK with that.
Either they draw them again, or recycle them, it's OK to me. As long as there's new levels and music in in the style of the GBA and DS CV games, it's OK. That's the game I want.
They still can experiment with gameplay and some other stuff, like they did with OoE, which turned out to be nearly perfect in my opinion.
-
Either they draw them again, or recycle them, it's OK to me. As long as there's new levels and music in in the style of the GBA and DS CV games
Now, I really don't understand some people...
But, whatever... ???
-
The guy says he doesn't care one way or another if the sprites are all-new or re-used.
I don't understand what's not to understand.
I disagree in that the sprites should be new and not recycled, but I respect his argument. It's a rather nonchalant outlook. More power to him.
-
So, neither "classicvania" and "metroidvania" are not your style, I presume?
No. I like both. But there are always something that I dislike in almost all Caslevanias. I would prefer it to look more like this painting: http://vr.theatre.ntu.edu.tw/hlee/course/th9_207/painter-wt/bruegel/bruegel-02x.jpg (http://vr.theatre.ntu.edu.tw/hlee/course/th9_207/painter-wt/bruegel/bruegel-02x.jpg)

I want Castlevania: The Gothic Fairytale. For me it always was a Gothic fairytale (with several exceptions). LoS may be a great game, but it is a fantasy game. IMO there is no place for fantasy in Castlevania.
-
I have no problem with recycled sprites, if the have new designs and new enemies. There enemies that you can't disregard, so you'll have to recycle them, by giving them new designs and moves. I'm thinking it like this, each time the castle appears, so does the enemies, but with new designs and powers, since all that time that they were missing, they were training and gaining new powers for their return to take revenge on the people who they have sealed them back to the demon realm.
-
I definitely agree, except with the medusa heads. I was thrilled with ReBirth simply because there were actually new medusa head sprites for a change.
-
The guy says he doesn't care one way or another if the sprites are all-new or re-used.

Agreed, except I'm actually okay with recycled ones too.
-

I don't understand what's not to understand.
I don't understand, why after all that had happened with the series somebody can have such position. For me its equal to wishing to bury the series in the pile of crappy copy-pasta games. 10 years wasn't enough to understand that it's not an evolution or anything good?
IMO there is no place for fantasy in Castlevania.
Yet, it was there from the begining.
I have no problem with recycled sprites, if the have new designs and new enemies.
Don't you think it's a bit contradicting?
You want new designes, but recycled sprites. Now, you can only have one or the other. Recycling automatically puts new desings out of question (if we not talking about simple recolor or little tweaking and I hope it doesn't constitute for you as "new design").
The fact that some of the enemies are considered iconic doesn't mean, that they always should have the same look. Classic games managed to change their appearance almost in every game and nobody objected for it.
-
I finally played Shantae: Risky's Revenge based on Jorge's high opinion of it, and I must say, I agree that it is the strongest proof that WayForward is capable of making a fresh 2D Castlevania. WF has had it's share of lame games and missteps, but they HAVE done right by most of the outside IPs they've picked up. BloodRayne and Aliens are both spot-on with the source matetial, and with Contra 4, they even managed to fix some inconsistencies created by the franchise's original localization. Again, if IGA won't reunite with Kojima and Yamane for future Metroidvanias, I would love to see WF pick up the torch. It seems like a strong possibility anyway.
And even if Double Dragon Neon isn't perfect (and probably should have remained in hand-drawn 2D), it's hard to deny that Jake Kaufman's soundtrack and Genzoman's artwork aren't pure awesome sauce. Kaufman could definitely adapt Yamane's tracks properly, and even if Genzoman is vastly different in style than Kojima, his designs are edgy enough to fit the CV aesthetic.
Furthermore, while I enjoy the Japanese-developed CVs the most thus far, I can see why KONAMI would allow Western studios to try their hand at Castlevania and Contra, since both series sell exponentially more units in America than anywhere else. They always have, since the very beginning, so objectively speaking, it's a pretty sound business decision. That doesn't mean I always have to agree with the results, of course.
-

When you are recycling enemies, it doesn't mean that they should have the same look or set of moves, to give you an example, here is the Axe Armor through time, in different Castlevania games.
So, it's the same enemy recycled, with new designs and moves.
-
So, it's the same enemy recycled, with new designs and moves.
The key point - it's the same enemy with different design and sprites.
There are not recylced and that's completely OK with me.
You wasn't clear about what you wanted.

Well, i still call it recycle, since, even though it isn't the same sprite, it's the same enemy, because he wasn't a skeleton that turned to a knight. So basically it's still recycled.

Hopes and Dreams....
I hope Konami is gracious enough to restore Akumajo Dracula.
Mirror of Fate looks like a love letter... 2-D Gameplay... Superior Quality (at least by portable standards)... And it also appears to respect Akumajo Dracula above and beyond the original LoS... I really hope they don't f*ck it up. I also hope Konami has a plan to make it a retail success. Pushing M rated product on 3DS is risky --especially considering Castlevania's cult status.
As for dreams... Well... I dream Mirror of Fate is successful enough to demonstrate the viability of 2-D gameplay. But I fear Konami's already lost their primary audience putting this on 3DS. Not many LoS fans will abandon their 360s and PS3s to buy a 3DS for this one game. I also fear too many Akumajo fans won't give it a fair chance --even when it's in their best interest to do so.
Mirror of Fate shines with production value --it may be the biggest budget 2-D Castlevania has ever had.
Expect bad news for Akumajo Dracula if this one doesn't do well...
-
Yet, it was there from the begining.
You're right. But still.. I wouldn't call Simon's Quest a fantasy game. Super Castlevania 4 doesn't have as much fantasy elements, as for example "Curse of Darkness".
-
Pushing M rated product on 3DS is risky --especially considering Castlevania's cult status.
Eh it worked for RE: Revelations, so much so that it's being ported to other consoles.
-
Those MoF screen shots are telling me to buy a 3ds xl right now.
So if it has convinced me to buy, perhaps others will.
Then again, some people will still want to hear recommendations and reviews from others.
-
Yeah, makes sense.
Like calling an apple an orange.
What's the difference except that they're apples and oranges? They are still fruit.
-
I think a better example would be Dhuron, Slogra, and Gaibon.
The sprites are more or less the same sprites used in Super Castlevania IV.
However, the movesets have been expanded.
Ah, there's that condescending attitude, Sumac. :)
As I said in the past, if you have a Warning Status up, don't act like an ass.
See you in a month.
-
Yeah, makes sense.

Sorry for doing this Jorge, but that guy will never understand, since the core it's the same, it's like a car, a porsche will always be a porsche, no matter how it looks outside. It never changed name or the core, so i fail to see and understand the above statement. Maybe i should call my pc a different name and not a computer, since it's not a pentium 4 anymore.... :P
-
Layin' down the law here in CVD. There's order in Sheriff Fuentes' town.
Seriously though, that condescending attitude was just uncalled for.

You're alright, Vlad, you're alright.

I would Love to a Ys (IV,Oath,Origin) Style Castlevania game, That Style Pushes a Jump style Platforming as well as Fun Beat-em-up elements for Regular enemies but a Strategy towards bossfights, plus the fixed angled overhead eliminates Camera Issues as well as grants the ability to sport a 3D environment with the given amount of detail from the Devs.
-
That would be pretty awesome. The latest Ys style reminds me of a high-res polygonal version of old adventure games like Illusion of Gaia and Terranigma.
-

Probably a lowkey Sumac sympathizer.

Pandora's Tower reminds me a lot of the Ys series.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6-_-FDR8ZU (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6-_-FDR8ZU)
Totally stoked it's coming out in NA(bravo Operation Rainfall!).
I kinda wonder why there aren't more ARPGs similar to these, though. Illusion of Gaia, Alundra, Ys, they are fun as hell when you get really into them. Maybe it's too hard to accomplish on HD, or nobody would fund it, though seeing downloadable original games like this on PSN/Arcade/Wii Channel would be cool. Seeing someone just go balls out and make an original ARPG in that style some really good sprites and backgrounds would suffice.
But yeah, totally agree, it would be MORE than interesting to see a CV in this style. Anything to get REAL platforming back into the series.
-
Oh man, it would be so great. It's not too difficult to accomplish, either.
Ys: Oath in Felghana's "Valestein Castle" feels pretty much like a Castlevania game section, as does Terranigma's Sylvain Castle.
Hell, I can probably design some quick stagework with some barebones platforms in my 3D program.
-

No offense to anyone, just expressing my own wishes, but anyway -1.
It's strange.
-
Back on topic...
Some months ago I played the latest Ys title for PC, and it's awesome, and really difficult. I still didn't finish it.
-
Yeah I'm in the Eldam Mountains on Ys: Oath in Felghana.
Stupid mountain enemies hurt like hell.
-
Castlevania + Ys + Terranigma?!!! Sounds pretty epic. I've been playing Ys 3: The Oath in Felghana lately and I just fell in love with this beautiful game. Still, I can't say which one I like more - original Ys 3 (wanderers from ys) or the remake. Anyway, TOIF is the perfect example of how remakes should be done. Valestein Castle is one of the best locations I ever explored.. Of course, it would be awesome to see something like this in Castlevania series.
-
Um, is it strange for me to not have any issue with Sumac's personality...?
Maybe I've just seen worse elsewhere, but I never really have a problem with his 'ttude.
-

Eh, different strokes for different folks. There's nothing weird or off about it if you get along with someone that others seem to be at odds with. I honestly have no personal issues whatsoever with Sumac since, like most people on an internet forum, I know next to nothing about the guy. I just thought his last few comments to people on here were unduly snarky. Nothing more, nothing less. It happens.
Anyway, back on track (sorta). I've NEVER actually played a Y's game...can...can we still be friends, guys? Check yes or no.
-
Um, is it strange for me to not have any issue with Sumac's personality...?

Same here, I survived gamefaqs and neogaf is getting there too. Sumac is too reasonable for those places :P but still this forum is somehow held in high standards of connivance. Props for Master Jorge for making it that way.
-
Other than the fact that he's been known to look down upon those in the community for disliking LoS, snidely labelling them as as "unable to accept change" and unfairly accusing them that if they hate LoS that automatically makes them "IGA-lovers," and pretty much picking apart and hating various aspects of the Castlevania games post-1997 right up until LoS "saved the series from the devil IGA," all the while refusing to listen to anyone that will try to give compelling arguments against him by calling them "illogical fanboys stuck in the past "
It's possible to share these same opinions without being a total jackass about it, which Sumac was, which is why Jorge did what he did. But enough of that; I watched a video of that Ys Oath game everyone's talking about and the gameplay seems perfect for a Castlevania, now I kinda wish MoF was done in this style instead.
-
Ys Oath in Felghana Gameplay (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4YlFiR61RM#)
Valestein Castle in Oath in Felghana.
Look at Adol ripping through enemies like a little buzz-saw.
This somewhat-overhead platformer is a great style that's both pretty-looking (the video doesn't do it justice) and retro, what with the sprite graphics for the enemies and the hero.
The PC version is often on sale and it's totally worth the money.
A side-story Castlevania in this method would be great. I can see a hero like Nathan Graves doing attacks like those.
EDIT: and here's Tigray Quarry showing some platforming on the steps:

I've seen far worse too, but just because I have, it doesn't make me think any more or less regarding things Sumac has done. Hell, I think CV Dungeon's such a great community because Jorge calls it like he sees it. It keeps the order in check. At least we don't have to worry about these forums devolving into a troll patrol like IMDb or GameFAQs. ;)

Yes there are a lot of other fora where trolls abound.
Plus it is hard to be a mod, so kudos to Jorge.

Never gonna happen. Too much hype.

(Haven't been here in so long that I just made a new account.)
Hopes and dreams for 2013? I hope that the all-month-long Castlevania-dedicated event I'm throwing at my site (GigaBoots.com) goes well and Konami doesn't bomb our videos into oblivion. I hope that there aren't any hardware failures either.
Dreams. I dream that LOS:MOF is actually good (decent, even) so I don't have a reason other than the Lords of Shadow LP to be surly all month.
-
Believe it or not, I wanna see at least 2 more Games in the LOS timeline...
While most would argue, I believe the reboot to have a stronger story (mainly because it;s all done by the same person)
I also wanna see Harmony of Despair done right, since the engine seems very simple I could imagine a PC release with similar mods to Doom or TF2, user made maps and monsters galore
also wanna see a Judgement 2 which add more characters and reveals more on the Galamoth wars

While most would argue, I believe the reboot to have a stronger story (mainly because it;s all done by the same person)
I also wanna see Harmony of Despair done right, since the engine seems very simple I could imagine a PC release with similar mods to Doom or TF2, user made maps and monsters galore
also wanna see a Judgement 2 which add more characters and reveals more on the Galamoth wars
absolutely. End of thread
-
The reboot not have stronger story, is the only castlevania story of value, we everyone fans of castlevania want to see 2 more games of forever lords of shadows, this my hope for 2013.
-

What
forever lords of shadows
I'm a LoS fan and even I don't want more LoS games. LoS tickles my fancy as a great looking great playing and sounding (IMO) game, but it doesn't scratch all my itches. For one, it's not that strong in the gothic atmosphere and aesthetic, and that's something I REALLY like, and the same for the music, while I still like it, needs a little more gothic. few more Organs, a Harpsichord or two... Maybe a Violin here or there...
-
If you don't want more lords of shadows i feel sorry, you are deny the future and want to live the past forever.
The story is the best in the history, is that what i say in the post up of here, not a stronger story, the best in the history of castlevanias it is.
-
We have a plenty of options for the future, the future isn't carved in a stone, it changes at every second. You can try to make your future happen while another persons try to make their future happen, its like a game.

I'd like to clarify, that when I say I don't want more LoS games, I mean I don't want more IGA games either. Forward is the way to go. Let others try their hand at the franchise.
-

Yes. Change is good and it is one of the things that is certain in this world.
-
Squeaky shoes. I am mystified as to why this has not appeared in the series since Lament of Innocence. That accessory is my favorite item in the series and I want it to return. There is something almost obscenely satisfying about whipping the crap out of the undead to the sound of your own squeaky steps.
-
Maybe, if the next developer has a sense of humor.
-
Gahh!!! How could I forget this well... I stand hecka corrected can't win them all now. It's all coming back to me it has been a while since I watched this. Not this one there was one with an ending
This was it
Contra Hard Corps (SG) Secret Boss + Ending (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgcupLgg87A#)
The boss music in Contra Hard Cops are GODLIKE. Seriously... so freaking good!
Also, YS series is my favourite now, since LoS/MS took over Castlevania. It'll stay that way, these games are amazing, I don't know why the hell didn't I played them before!
-
I don't want to create an entire new topic for this so I'll just ask it here: what do you think/hope will happen at E3? Just the obvious Lords of Shadow 2 coverage or something more? It may not be realistic to expect a new 3DS game announcement right away, so I'm hoping for an interesting spin-off game. I would be down with Judgment 2 for WiiU.
-
At the current state of things, I would be happy if they announced Judgment 2, but I highly doubt that would happen.
I'm in also for a new downloadable title, be it a new remake alla Rebirth, or Harmony of Despair 2. A port of Castlevania: The Arcade would also be great (with Wii controls).
-
I think the top of the Castlevania's vision of Mercury Steam has been CV MOF (ok is not..but I love)
I doubt we will see in LOS2 anything close to MOF (for many reasons)
and about "Return of the Dragon"
I expect a game with high production values and very commercial, a step even stronger, with Dracula becomes a dragon (literally) or Castlevania Musou (the feeling is that, sry)
I think Cox is unleashed and unstoppable ^^o
My hope for 2013 is..PLATINUM GAMES o WAYFORWARD ... and maybe a JAPAN reboot of SCV IV for the 30th year ...
But Konami continue on the path of darkness ... LOS showed the success at Konami.
No turning back.
Great (my favorite series will live) but...sad :-[
-
Oh you silly kids.
Why do you prostrate your grand desires for the next year of the series, when you know exactly what we're getting. We've gotten Mirror of Fate and we're getting Lords of Shadow 2. That's a handheld title and a console title in the same year. The only time our series has gotten anything more than that was 2010, when Lords of Shadow, Harmony of Despair and Encore of the Night were released. (and Pachislot II, if you want to be technical)
Say what you really mean and just blurt out "WHATS COMING AFTER LORDS OF SHADOW 2?! I NEED TO KNOW!!" Because we all know that's what the majority of us are the most curious about - the fate of the series past Coxlevania.
Personally I hope we get a game where Castlevania, Vampire Hunter D, Hellsing, Blood Omen/Soul Reaver, Darkstalkers and Bloodrayne all come together in a ULTIMATE VAMPIRE BATTLE OF ULTIMATE DESTINY.
Yuzo Koshiro, Michiru Yamane, Nobuo Uematsu and John Williams will do the music.

Sadly that is just a dream. xD
-
I like the LoS series. But I'd love a CV game with a much heavier gothic atmosphere.
-
I would really love to see Konami make a Castlevania with hand drawn graphics, or go the Vanillaware route and essentially do what they did with most sprites in SotN but with high res gorgeous artwork.
Honestly, Castlevania should have received that kind of budget and treatment long ago. Just imagine it, a new 2D Castlevania with 3D backgrounds and hand drawn sprites that match Ayami Kojima's art style or something else people would be familiar with and gladly associate with the series.
Virt/Jake Kaufman should be in charge of the soundtrack too.

For E3? Outside of LoS2 info, not much. Maaaaaybe some new Virtual Console type ports. And that's a big maybe.
Since many companies have been releasing those there art-books (Like the Mega Man Complete Works or whatever it's called), I'd thoroughly enjoy one crammed with as much official art as they can find.

Old galamoth was hopping around Transylvania like a big playground, when suddenly B.B hood burst from the shade and hit galamoth with a water grenade.
I could possibly do a remake if I wanted to.
-

Why do you prostrate your grand desires for the next year of the series, when you know exactly what we're getting.
Because desires doesnt changes so easily, its not because that we will not receive what we want that we will lose our hopes. That why its a "Hopes and dreams" topic. :P

Castlevania by VanillaWare would be awesome.
Now I have a 5th studio to hope for (Konami Japan, WayForward, Platinum, FromSoftware, VanillaWare).
-
if they do a WII U Judgement... i want ARC SYSTEM WORKS to go to town on it... gorgeous mastery of the 2D fighting genre... i Believe with them Iga can happily kick his feet up and let (them) piece it all together... Maybe Castle mode will actually become a side-scrolling beat em up! :D
-
how about some dlc for mirror of fate for 2013? it could happen. it'd be funny if they actually went ahead and offered classic remixed background music for the stages for one thing.

Classic music seems like it's treated as taboo in LoS at this point.

I have yet to see any DLC come out for a cartridge game. If it did happen it would be a first.

New Super Mario 3DS have DLCs
-

NSMB2 on 3DS has DLC's I think.
-
Yeah, since they're not putting classic remixes into the main game, I think a DLC would be a good way to cater to fans. Something that's outside of the normal game, and can be bought and funded separately from the original soundtrack. Or remember those "CD" tracks you could "find" in Dracula X Chronicles or Order of Ecclesia? Some of those had original 8-bit songs you could play in the background. They could do that too, something to "find" like the Bestiary pages if they don't want to dwell too much on RPG items. But yeah, I doubt it, so it'll just be a hope and dream.
-
Some users said that trying to hear classic CV musics playing LoS isn't that good as we expect. So I dont think that it could do a great difference. But yeah, better than nothing. :P

Wait a minute out of all the people you mentioned you forgot Motoi Sakuraba :P

I hope to have at least two commercial games, two cellphone apps, and at least one of my fan games finished this year.

I will! Thanks for the support! ;D

Umm I think some of ya may have forgotten fire emblem awakening :P
-
In my case its more like "you didnt knew" than "you forgot".
-
Well now you know :)
Yes dlc for fire emblem is kind of crazy like the beach dlc.
-
These DLCs are only new arenas or new stories?
-
More so new arena with the prize being characters from the old games for instance I have marth, roy, leaf, and micaiah on my team, or extra exp, money just a variety of things , but no major story changer as far as I know.
-
Umm I think some of ya may have forgotten fire emblem awakening :P
I've never kept up-to-date on the fire Emblem series. I've tried one of the games (FE7 for the GBA I believe) but could never really finish it despite the interesting story. I'd always get killed :P
-
saw the word "arena" and thought that it'd be nice to have an arena in Mirror of Fate. i haven't beaten it yet, so i don't know if it has anything like it, but sometimes it seems like the enemies are spaced too far apart. an area where you just get to whack on a whole bunch of them continuously would be nice for a change. something like the Tower of Eternity in Curse of Darkness or the Large Cavern of Order of Ecclesia or Arena in Circle of the Moon. Does Mirror of Fate have anything like that? if not, i'd wish and hope for such a level as DLC.
-

Nope.
Will they even make a DLC for MoF?
-
Here are my hopes and dreams for 2013:
Original Castlevania, Simon's Quest, Dracula's Curse and Belmont's Revenge all make it to 3DS eshop in 2013. While we're at it, get Super Castlevania IV on 3DS eshop as well, would love to play that on the go.
Would also love to finally see Bloodlines on Virtual Console, and maybe even CV64.
-
I really want Bloodlines on VC. God damn. Seriously.
-
Nope.
Will they even make a DLC for MoF?
Maybe..Inverted cof cof cof...
I Hope.
-
Im not so sure there's gonna be DLC for MoF since Konami twisted Mercurysteam's balls regarding the DLC for LOS1.
-

The DLC for LoS should not have been DLC to begin with, but a part of the final product. A lot of people out there were disappointed with that decision and the DLC's weren't nearly as long enough to warrant buying them at the price they were being sold. It's like MercurySteam poured concentrated lemon juice on the fans' sensitive balls with paper cuts that were already infected.
-
Concerning the DLC for LoS, I would've preferred a Boss Rush mode or several extra costumes (the "Simon Belmont" costume they made for the original pitch [the "Altair" version], perhaps a "classic" costume [loinclothes!]). Maybe even a mini-game or two where you play as Zobek or Laura fighting Medusa Heads in a unique situation, or a "Castlevania Chess" mode. Something more creative & fun instead of the 2 extra chapters that should've been part of the game anyway would've been more worth it.
-
We need costumes in LoS2.
No, we DEMAND THEM.
-
No, costumes are small time.
To truly make up for the DLC of LOS1, they should (if they haven't already) have Alucard as a playable character complete with his own full fledged campaign. It would also make up for not having his sword useable in MoF.
-

Yes! I agree with this.
Redeem yourselves MS, before its too late....
-
simple formula for dlc:
*Classic music is a must!!!
*I agree with a Boss Rush mode and costumes...
*Why not make finding chairs and stuff a thing again?¿? You mean to tell me that stuff wasnt fun in HoD? Then the DLC will have chandeliers and Gravy dishes you can buy for that persons own room!
*Make an Inverted Castle DLC. It may sound dumb but i think there would be interesting things to come with this.
finally i want to have familiars again! i never played MoF so i dont know if they've been revived.
why not make a dlc to turn those imp things into medusa heads???? :P
-
Alucard in LoS2 would be a really nice idea for DLC, or better yet, they could make a new game + after beating LoS2 as Gabcula and have Alucard become playable with a harder difficulty unlocked.
I miss the days when games just came with everything cool right on the cart or disc instead of having to pay extra for it later.
-

Exactly, you said it right. A good idea would be Alucard in the actual game, not a DLC. They must learn what they forgot, DLC is for bug fixes and bonus content, not for things that should be in the game since the beggining.

Well, MS is not the type of company that adds a new game + mode.
And it seems to me they only want the player to be Gabula and not anyone else.
-
wait, we're not getting a playable Alucard in LoS2? why was I under the impression that we were?
-
The DLC for LoS1 was to be part of the main game, but Konami wanted the game to be released before and they had to release the end as a DLC after, as far as I know.

As always, Konami rushing and screwing our games :/
-
I would have liked Lords of Shadow SO, SO MUCH MORE if Reverie was a part of the game instead of a DLC!
I guess we must blame only Konami for this one.
It would have been nice to get the entire Harmony of Despair game from the go, too. Most of the best stuff (stages, characters, soundtrack) is in the DLC's!

It's all about the money....

They did it in the PS3 version.

The extra stages all cost still along with extra cast.

Well if it helps, when they release the PC port of LoS, it will come with both the DLC chapters.

They should port HoDespair too. Then some fans could hack the game and add new things,

That would be awesome! I'd love to see new material for HoD!

I didn't know. I'm looking forward to play the Reverie chapter in full HD!
They did it in the PS3 version.
I have a PS3 with jailbreak. Is there some link to download chapters 8 to 12 and all the extra playable characters and soudntrack? I'd love to play with Maria and listen to the new tracks while I play, but I was never able to find them.
I'd really appreciate if anyone gives me a link.

Did i heard a lady asking for a favor? I have a link, but i can't post it here, instead i can PM it to you, if you allowed me.
-
Wait hold the horse!! I'm an Avid HD player, I am certain there isn't a chapter 12. Legend of Fuma is the final chapter. But the extra music keeps this game top among other CV's. I wish they'd have it so whomever hosts the party gets whichever tracks they've chosen played. This game has all the elements, just needs the proper fusion is all.
-

Yes, my mistake...
There's 11 chapters.

It's fine, i was seriously gonna rush home to check the PS store when i got off work tho :D

PM sent.

I'll be fucking pissed off if Alucard isn't playable in LoS 2. Also, make him MELEE, with a fucking sword this time, instead of "Everyone was Belmont" crap in LoS: MoF.

Well, from what i have seen so far from Cox, i don't hold my hopes up.
-
I believe, from my experience so far with MS games, that he will certainly use a whip.
-
He will use a sword... a sword with a mutable blade that is almost like a whip.

I can have it too? I dont even have a PS3 but I want to check these files.

And MS will say it's a "sword", haha!

much like Dracula's Sword in endless artworks and yet he has the blood whip

Yeah. MS has their own interpretation of what a sword looks like.

Better cool your head now, cause MS is not fond of releasing extra playable characters.

Sure, check your PM box.
-
Thanks, where did you found this image in your sig, its really pretty, can you share it? Maybe in the fanart topic?
-
That's a very cute image, indeed!
I'd like to have it in big resolution, too.
I'll check the fanart topic, I don't know how I skipped that one so far :P
-
That image is from Pixiv. I can probably find it on my old computer or on Pixiv if you give me a minute.
Edit: Oh! There's an Order of Ecclesia doujinshi on Pixiv's Castlevania page. Non-pairing:

I'm usually very organized when it comes to images, but I've got SO MANY that I have four places where I put them. I have an 'unsorted' area, a 'sorted' area, a NSFW area, and a 'set' area where I put copies of images that I want to use as banners/avatars on various forums. The unsorted folder is a mess only divided by fandom, while the other sections have sub-folder organized by characters in the fanart and whether it's a comic or pairing fanart. I even split up official art and fanart, if there are enough images to warrant it.
The image in question is in one of these areas on my computer; I just have to figure out where. XD If my hand slipped while I was sorting it, I might have put it in the wrong folder. Or maybe I just didn't look hard enough.
-
That happens frequently to me.
I like to think I have all my stuff organized, but sometimes I just can't find a file I'm sure I have and I know it's somewhere, but since I don't have a lot of patience, I usually give up if I can't find it in a few minutes.
-
I too am pretty organized with pictures, but sometimes, sifting through all of them is so tedious and forgetting the file names makes it harder to search.
-
I was trying yesterday to upload all the fan art that i have collected so far, but my connection was messing up, so if i'm lucky today, i'll uploaded and add the links for download on the fan art thread and the image for my signature is included on the package.
-
Thanks! I'll be looking forward to it!
-
Me too, thanks!
edit: Someone knows why all images from pixiv doesnt appear to me? Even if I try to load only one image in a new tab it shows a "403 Forbidden" to me.
-
Me too, thanks!

Not sure. Did you try a different browser?
-
After you gave this idea to me, yes. I tested in Google Chrome (my main browser), Firefox and Internet Explorer. It works fine in IE and Firefox. Thanks for giving me this idea, I think it should be because of Comodo DNS (My Chrome is modded, its called Comodo Dragon) so I wil try changing it to the standard DNS and see what happens.
edit: I've discovered the problem (its not even about DNS, I changed it to a standard one months ago and forgot about that), its the protection "Do not allow websites to know where you came from (suppress HTTP Referrer header)". If you turn its ON pixiv doesnt let you see their images, I thinks its because they dont know that this request is coming from their own site, bad programming if you ask me, since its the first site that acts like that.
-
Awesome collection, by the way! :)
-
People may think I'm crazy but I think CV should try to give the 64 style another shot. That game is awesome. Yeah it has its flaws but I think it has a lot of original ideas. Just to name a few thing I liked with it.
1. Vampires as everyday enemies.
2. Vampires being able to bite you and thus possibly turning you into a vampire resulting in a game over.
3. I felt the day and night system worked. Yes I know it's in CV2 but it got a little annoying after awhile. I felt CV 64 improved it greatly.
4. Being able to fall in pits. Call me weird but I miss the days where I fall down a hole that's five miles deep and die. Now a days I fall down same hole and I don't take any damage.
5. Four different characters to play with. Some of them even having boss fights and events only pertaining to their character.
6. This might sound weird but I like things simple. I like how CV 64 has the basic sub weapons and that's it. I'll be honest I'm not much of a fan of the over a hundred options of weapons, 90% of them I'll never use. I'm sure no one shares this with me.
7. Cool supporting characters. Now I'm not saying other CV supporting characters are bad but the ones in CV 64 had a certain charm. Vincent and the merchant were super cool too.
I might think of more later. Yes not everyone shares my love for CV 64. I know it has problems but I really do think they were taking steps in the right direction. I also think CV should have an eerie mystery feel to it.
-
I don't think you are crazy.
Despite technical flaws, I love CV 64 in every way, and it's up to this day my favourite 3D non-RPG game.
I consider it superior to any other Castlevania 3D game ever made.
-
I don't care for any aspect in the N64 Castlevanias. In fact, I consider them worse than the LoS series and the PS2 games, because of the shitty gameplay and really outdated graphics.
-

Graphics? Maybe its because the game is very old? Trying to compare a N64 game graphics with a PS2 and PS3/360 game is just unfair.
I like GuyStarwind idea, since the only thing that makes the gameplay really shitty is the camera IMO.
-

They were bad even for the year they were released. Actually, few N64 games were mindblowing for me. Nintendo games, for example, at the time I had no problems with them, but they look really bad these days.
But the shitty graphics I could stomach... the problem is really on the gameplay.
-
Yeah I'd say most people would agree the gameplay isn't the best. However, I do think the game had some good ideas that I would love to see revisited.
-
I find the graphics outdated but beautiful, and today you can play them with high resolution textures in HD.
And I'm not by an inch a fan of the N64 console, it's by far the console that interests me the less.
But CV64... I just love it.
I know I'm on the minority, but I love it.
-
I too would like to play something like Castlevania 64 Rebirth :). This game has an atmosphere. Graphics is not bad at all IMO. Characters animation was quite realistic for its time. Soundtrack was awesome - "Silent Madness" is the scariest thing I'd ever heard in the series. Some boss battles were fun. For once Dracula transformed into something other than gargoyle. Also, knight with a gun is one of my favorite Castlevania characters (can't remember his name :)).
-
Will the hi-res CV64 patch work with a LoD rom?
And speaking of my dreams, I'll be leaving the country on late July or August, based on how plans go.
-
I don't like the lack of enemy variety in the CV64 games.

That's like the main problem of all 3d games I've played so far.. As for C64 - I think it has enough enemy kinds, but doesn't use them right. There are enemies you meet once or twice in the game.

Will the hi-res CV64 patch work with a LoD rom?
And speaking of my dreams, I'll be leaving the country on late July or August, based on how plans go.
I believe the High-res patch is ONLY for LoD. I didn't know there was a Castlevani64 version, since LoD is, from a gameplay perspective, tweaked to be an overall better experience (controllable camera, tweaked situational camera controls, etc.).

Here's my new hope for 2013. I hope that the XBOX 180 brings down Microshaft and all other gaming companies learn from this horrid mistake about what NOT to do with a gaming console.

I want an Indie console! Console designed especially for cool small indie games (2d preferably ). I don't know why - may be I'm too old ;D , but I don't get excited over new mainstream "big" games anymore. But indie developers are still awesome! And thanks to projects like Kickstarter we actually can play these games. I've found 3 promising metroidvanias there (Valdis Story: Abyssal City, A.N.N.E, Chasm). Also I had fun playing Aztaka by Citeremis (Aztec metroidvania!). Kurovadis was a cool little metrodvania (with hentai! :P). Unepic was a nice game too. There are other great games I'm going to play.
