There's something not unusual in this picture. Can you spot it?
-
"Not unusual"? Everything?
-
Depends on your definition of unusual, however, Castlevania II is being played on the NES there and it is the only game related product shown in the picture, that I can tell, that isn't a Nintendo first party property.

That Mario Bros cushion is fucking boss
I bet it's worth $1,000 today.
-
I can't find anything amiss...Professor Layton, I have failed you. Also, that bean bag chair is pretty rad.

He's playing a Nintendo game without looking at the screen! :-X
-
Pretty sneaky, sis. Although, to be fair, this was a bit of a trick question since it didn't really matter if he looked at the screen or not with CVII-it was broke as shit & probably would've played just as well with him not looking at it. But we still love it & are glad it's part of the family.
-
I never saw Simon's Quest as a broken game. It managed to captivate me more than most the other games in the series. The atmosphere is so damn thick, I guess in the end that's all that really matters to me.
-
It had some good qualities, yes. It was a very ambitious piece for it's day what with the open, non-linear style of it (I LOVED that part of it, it made 8 year old Laina have the happies), it just wasn't well executed. I found it so annoying with the grinding for hearts, the overly cryptic hints from NPC's, the lack of bosses, "WHAT A HORRIBLE NIGHT TO HAVE A CURSE" taking 10 unskippable seconds, et. c..
It was a pioneer game for the series at the time (Metroidvania with it's non-linear wandering) & God bless them for trying something so new at such an early stage of the series, but it still had quite a few flaws. It's okay though, like I said-we still love it & are glad it's part of the CV family.

I own a cabinet similar to the one the kid has his NES on. Found it brand new in the box at a thrift shop, instruction manual, stickers, everything!. ;D I couldn't resist it so I built it and put my NES on it too. I think I like mine better than his... ;)
(note: not me posting, just happened to have an image of the type of cabinet I have)

You can pause the game with SELECT, y'know.

This is about the only inconsistency that I can see. Everything else in the room looks normal by 80's standards.

The kid on the left is drinking RUM! HE'S A CHILD ALCOHOLIC!!!!
-
The fucking controller isn't even plugged in. If it is, that's one loooooong ass cord.

Good eye! I can see it now but missed it completely before.

Actually the NES cord could be conceivably that long. I'm holding one now and it certainly could make it to the NES console.
Also, the plugs are not visible in the pic. It cannot be proven beyond a reasonable doubt whether it's plugged in or not.
/PhoenixWright.

I had to look very carefully just to see it myself. And yes the cord isn't plugged in otherwise we would see a little black plug with a cord sticking out of the front of the NES box (but it's not there). I'm using the angle of the image in contrast to the young man who's somewhat blocking the area in question, but not blocking it completely. I'm also using my NES (it's right behind me) as a basis for evidence. So unless he's got the controller plugged into slot 2 then it's not even connected to the NES.

Current conversation reminds me of this

Er, what's the pictorial equivalent of an "old chestnut"? The shocking revelation that maybe, just maybe, some booth babes are only in it for the money.
Anyways lol the "kids are playing but not looking at the TV" was actually my first thought, but then I thought that must be way too simple and it had to be something else.

Same thoughts here. I also thought that the controller may not be plugged in & then tried to do a mental measurement based on memory of a NES controller. Another thing too is look how the kid holding the controller has his left arm-I thought for a second he was missing it until I saw his hand coming out from his knee. Just an unintentionally bad way to hold it for the angle of that pic.

Mario doesn't punch Goombas.

Then again, this shouldn't happen either. (Or should it?)

I like how this post has more replies than the Facebook post I found it under. ;D

Facebook is old-hat, a passing fad. Now the Dungeon? We're here to stay.

There was nothing unusual about the 80s.
