I mean, the PS3 hasn't really been a triumph. Plus the PSP has been a joke in the west, if not in Japan. And the Vita? you tell me, but the numbers I've been hearing, are not that great, right? And enough time has passed from the Vita's lauch, for us to make assumptions, imo. What I also understand, is that Sony has been doing less than abysmal in their other efforts, than gaming, during the past 5 years or so. I.e. is Sony even going to be around in the VG-market, to be a serious contender in the next gen? your thoughts? ???

Well, for my self, i was very happy up to PS2. When PSP came out, i only bought it for the Castlevania Chronicles. Later, when i discovered the use of emulation for older machines, like snes, gba etc, i was happy that it was having some good use, aside from playing Castlevania, later sony released some nice titles, so i am happy with my psp. Now for the PS3, i bought again because of LoS, but i wasn't too much satisfied, since the game wasn't was i was expecting, but aside from that, i was having fun playing through it. Now, for me the real problem is that since i'm crazy for RPG games and less for action games, there is almost nothing worth RPG game playing for the PS3. I have played 80% of the RPG's and only 20% of them was satisfying for my tastes.
I don't know, but i rarely use my PS3 these days, almost every game that comes out, is a copy paste from some other game, nothing original, nothing new. Even for series like Final Fantasy or Resident Evil and Silent Hill. For me Sony, doesn't offer any amusement any more, so the only thing my PS3 does now, is collecting dust. I can't say that i didn't have fun the first time, but it was short, compared to PS2 or PSX.
My final opinion? Sony needs to stop and think some things, like what it was that made past consoles so popular and make a refresh. The only way that i would buy ps vita, it would be a Castlevania title, but since that want happen, there is no way that i would but it now or in the future.

I think it is not just Sony that is suffering from the strong yen in the recent years. Almost all of Japan is suffering due to the disadvantage of the strong yen on its export driven economy.
I was also happy with my PS2 until it died and went to heaven.
I got a PSP just because it was on sale for a giga bundle, used it for a while as a music player, then bought those cool Gundam games in Japan. Chronicles was the last purchase I did.

Sony is doing OK. Like Shiroi said, a lot of Japanese companies are having troubles because of the strong Yen, but they'll manage. For some nicer news from Sony:
