It's possible.
"Oddly, Maria's old stiff-legged sprites are used throughout the game's story scenes, except in one particular encounter where she stands in as a boss."

I doubt it, it's more likely they're copying the saturn version where you have to fight Maria to get the Holy Glasses.

I'm afraid that hidden 5th ending will forever remain lost in the ps-x copy of sotn... I wish someone would've brought it up in one of the many interviews given to IGA man. It seems like noone else knows about it except us.
-
that would be cool, but don't think it will happen but if someone would had pointed it out we might had got it.lol
but like you say no one knows jack about it:(
what would be cool to me is to play as alucard in rondo:)
but that won't happen nether:(

I do hope that IGA knows about the ending since he worked on SOTN...
-
well i'm not sure looking at it from a production way, he likely ran out of time or disk space on the psx and had to cut corners the evidence of the ran out of time is there form the gltiches to get into some areas and comparing to the half assed areas of the saturn version perhaps we'll see the directors cut ending yet
-
Well, that would be a same. But hope dies last.

lt is possible that the fifth ending was originally going to be a US exclusive in the psx SOTN game, but as someone said, time was probably reason why it wasn't added. With that said, it is very likely IGA and others forgot about it or that IGA had no knowledge of this ending and was conceived by the localization team at the time. Who knows?

There are voice samples for that ending in the japanese copy too so nope.
Also, the japanese copy interestingly has the conversation with Maria that ends in fighting her. Usa copy has it as well, but untranslated.
