Title: Best SOTN
Post by: Mathias Hyperion on January 03, 2008, 10:10:21 PM
Yes, another poll.

I have a 360, but I think two SOTNs will do for now. I'm not long starting on the PSP version and I don't really have the hardcore dedication to have gotten very far in the PS one despite having had it for over a year, so I can't really offer an educated opinion.

The Sega Saturn version is my favorite.

PSP version is buggy as hell.

Easily PSP. An amazingly kick-ass Maria as a playable character just makes makes it far superior to others, as well as the much better VA and script and the best part is it is portable. Portable!!

Gotta show some love for the PSOne version. It's a classic.

eh, NitM is terrible.....the extra levels suck and so does Maria....I'm just going to have to say PS1 especially for:

R: Die Monster you don't Belong in this world
D: It was not by my hand that I'm once again given flesh!
I was called here by humans, who wish to pay me tribute!
R: Tribute?! You Steal men's souls and make them your slaves!
D: Perhaps the Same could be said of all Religions....
R: Your words are as empty as your soul! Mankind ill needs
    a savior such as you!
D: What is a man?! A miserable little pile of secrets! But enough talk, have at you!

That's enough to win my vote

Seems most people who dis the Saturn version have never actually even played it themselves.

I'd take a little slow-down and tons of exclusive extras over a version with multiple bugs that cause the game to crash.

I own every version in the poll, and PSP is my fave. The smoothest, best controls, and I like the new Maria. NITM, well, even with all the extras, it just seems too slow and could have better controls. If it weren't for that, NITM and PSP would be equal for me.

The PSX original's has the least content (the two missing familiars, no Maria, no extra areas or items) and the 360 is missing even more (no movies or I am the Wind!).
Title: Re: Best SOTN
Post by: Long John Silver on January 04, 2008, 07:34:06 AM
I played nitm and beat it as everyone. And I didn't really like it. Most of the extras were lame, the visuals were pretty ugly and the slowdown made it feel really sluggish sometimes to the point of annoyingly boring. And not even maria, the only highlight of that port saved it due to some of the stupid ideas such as the screen pausing to cast spells.

That said, i didn't play the psp one so i can't speak about it, so my favorite'll be the psx original japanese. It's like the usa, only better due to the lack of censorship and changes. Only needs english text really.

Never played Saturn version..

So between PSP and PSX version, I have to choose PSX mainly for the voice acting. I miss Alucard sounding like Laurence Fishburne.

PSP, original dub kicks the crappy english one's ass.  :)

Have I just gotten too used to DXC/Rondo, or is the fact that tapping X causes Alucard to jump not very high and you need to hold it down to get the full jump height new to the PSP version?
Title: Re: Best SOTN
Post by: Donvermicelli on January 04, 2008, 11:02:16 AM
PSOne version, the reason I chose that above NITM is because the extra area's there seem too out of place and cartoony compared to the others. (JAP version of the PSX version though)

Well  I hope that that is not aimed towards me, I have played, and I just don't care for it. I like the idea of some added stages, it would make SotN more fun, but not those stages.

Also, in the ten years I've owned the original PS1 version I've never had any bugs (that I didn't cause myself - sowrd familiar for example) and I've never seen my game crash once.

The only bug I came across in the PSP version is the system shutting off when you go to Succubus with the Nose Demon equipped. I haven't had any other problems with the PSP version, besides not having I am the Wind...

PSP. Hands down. Good maria, hand held, the lost familiars, English singing fairy, and new voices. Despite some of the glitches, its the best by far.

I prefer the original version of playstation and CVfan13 if you search the game carefully you can find many bugs and glitches like this one that i found my self with Maria at inverted marble gallery at the center of the castle where is the clock with two statues:

Pictures are taken by me from psp Symphony.

List of PSP bugs taken from this guide: http://www.gamefaqs.com/portable/psp/file/938141/51043

1. Loading the "Nightmare" with the N.Demon or Fairy familiar equipped will
cause the game to freeze.

2. Backdashing to the librarian just after exiting his menu will freeze the
game.

3. Using Maria's Dragon subweapon exactly while getting hit will cause the
game to prevent you from using any subweapons until you exit the room.

4. This version is more prone to the Inverted Clock Tower glitch wherein you
are hit and sent to the ceiling of the secret area to the lone Cloaked Knight
enemy.

--> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_z5gl6tnA48

5. Using the Shield Rod + Alucard Shield effect against Guardians seem to be
inconsistent and the effects wear off without warning even if you still have
enough MP.

6. Pressing Start to skip a Tactics video while Alucard is transforming or
reverting in the video will make Alucard disappear in the Librarian screen
and the "transformation sound effect" will still be heard, causing the game
to freeze. (contributed by ROBOROBORYO)

7. Pressing Bat right at the moment of entering a loading spot/sequence will
make Alucard disappear when the next screen/room is loaded. This relates to
theory that "Transformation + Loading = Freeze". This happens more frequently
in this version.

Thats the same glitch i got at the end of the game when the clock is supposed to open to fight shaft.  You can fall in the hole to wear the sub weapons are and the screen turns white and freezes.

It only happens with maria I believe.

No, it's what knightmere said. If you fall to the room with the subweapons while the floor at the room with the clock is going to open for the fight with shaft the screen of the game turns white, but the game isn't freezing, but you can't see anything until some time passes and the game freezes and playing only music.

Title: Re: Best SOTN
Post by: Esco on January 06, 2008, 04:39:10 PM
Heh, I guess I'd probably be the most qualified person in the forums to debate this one! ;)

5th place: The XBOX version:

..... is a piece of shit. Straight up. NEXT!

4th place: The SATURN version:

Has extra stuff.... but is plagued by lousy visuals, slowdown, and an extra character that is so overpowered, a toddler could beat the game with ZERO effort on the first try! GONE are all of the cool transparency effects like when alucard changes to bat, or the water, or even how a warg dies.

Maria is just a straight crappy character! At first she seems neat, but after beating the game once with her, you quickly lose all interest. This little blonde hottie is pretty much a one night stand!

The new garden area and new monsters in it suck! And I'm not talking the normal type of suck... I'm talking the type that use teeth and DON'T FINISH THE JOB!

The prison stage is neat, and some of the monsters are really unique too (the wraith and ghosts in the reverse one in particular), and it's the most Castlevania-esque stage in the game IMHO. But it's also just too damn small and short. Just when you start to enjoy it, it ends. It's like halving a girlfriend that tells you to stop when your having sex..... RIGHT before you catch a nut. It's pretty much a tease.

The new music is DEFINATELY tight, and the new boss is actually pretty cool, and somewhat challenging too. Which is good. And the Maria boss is DEFINATELY one of the best fights in SOTN, period.

But sadly.... even with these positives, I've still got to drop it in next to last place. It just looks ugly if you've played the psx version, and the slowdown is god awful.

On the other hand though, if the saturn version was the first one you played, chances are you would enjoy it without a doubt! :)

3rd place: The PSP version:

I have yet to play this version... so I can't comment on it much. But I have seen MANY videos, and here's what I can say:

I don't like the new dialogue. I LOVED some of the old kinda hokay 1700's type speak they tried to use thru the original psx version.

As for the voice acting, well....

Two very badly designed areas, some new items, a new relic, new outfit for richter that's still not accurate to his artwork, and really stupid new enemies.

Also lots of slowdown and degraded effects.

Shoes of godspeed. They give you an ability to "run" as Alucard. It's really just a Richter style doubletap run which skips Al's walking intro and goes immediately into his run sprites, with a small speed boost.
Title: Re: Best SOTN
Post by: outofthegamer on February 07, 2008, 10:19:11 PM
There are a few more bugs in the DXC version, but one of them lets you skip death in any game mode, and that is awesome! Here's a video of how to skip death and a few other rare bugs I found...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ZaZZrwcWS4

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oPyL57TWEfM

So despite being a little more buggy, I would have to vote for the PSP/DXC version...btw, how do you vote?

Yeah it was a Relic. You could use it at anytime, without it having to take up an equip slot.

You ran at double speed, just like Richter's double tap run that Serio is talking about, but you're Alucard, and it added some nice, faster gameplay, and is a change of pace when compared to the other SOTN games.
