Title: When you went Hardcore Fan on a Game...
Post by: KaZudra on February 04, 2013, 08:32:51 AM
This thread is devoted to the people who went hardcore Fan, in other words read novels, watched movies, owning soundtracks, ect. the works, I'll start.

Bioshock; Have the games on PC and xbox360 (I have 2 special edition), also read the book which turned out to be really good IMO.

Ys: Every Soundtrack, watched all the OVA's and just about bought every game twice (1 on PSP and 1 on PC)

and, of course; Castlevania; obviously with a TON of stuff like the rest of us

What are some games you went Full Nerd on?

Well, I'm possibly the only person outside of Japan who imported all of the SaGa 20th Anniversary merchandise.

Castlevania aside, my room is more-or-less an SNK/Neo Geo monument. I love fighting games—there are other things I go out of my way for, though.

Hm. Come to think of it by those criteria... I'm not really a "full nerd" for anything. I'm not a figurine person, I have no place to display such things. The one exception being a 1 inch Freya Crescent model that came with Coca Cola in Japan. (Final Fantasy IX <3)

But I have bought and read book(s) or special edition goodies for Castlevania, Darkstalkers, Zelda, Doom and pre-3 Mass Effect (which I'm still boycotting). I guess since I even bought the awful Saturday Morning cartoon for Darkstalkers, plus the OVA, the 2 manga available in English, 2 art books, 2 strategy guides and the special edition comic omnibus that's the game series I'd be closest to going "full nerd" for after Castlevania.

PS- Oh! And my Sly Cooper figurine. (Which I forgot about cause it's squirreled away in a box, like I said no place to display it.) Got the books and comics for that one to. Though not in the best condition. I bought "Rocket: Robot on Wheels" specifically because it was the only game SuckerPunch! had made before Sly, and the villain in that game is an obvious Sly prototype Raccoon thief. Still need to play it though.

Metal Gear Solid
Deus Ex: Human Revolution

I bought all of the McFarlane MGS2 toys so I could make that RAY. I just got my Adam Jensen Play Arts Kai figure in the mail today. I bought and read through the DX novel and really enjoyed it. I own the Big Boss limited edition PSP with MGS:PO, I stood in line for an hour to meet and greet Hideo Kojima and got a signed 25th Anniversary Metal Gear poster from it. Can't wait for my collector's edition for MGR to come in the mail later this month...also the Play Arts Kai for Black Raiden too!

Hell, my tag on this forum is still my tag from the GameSpy days when I mainly used this account for the MetalGear.net forums.  ;D

I have 4 different game series I'd probably be considered "Hardcore" fan of. They are:

Lunar - I have all the English released games in the series. I also both the Japanese and English versions of the Sega CD versions and PSX versions of Lunar 1 and Lunar 2. I also have both of the art books made for Lunar, and two different mangas from the series. I also have the Ghaleon punching puppet promo thing.

Tales of - I own most of the English released games in the series, including some of the Japanese ones. I have 4 art books (Symphona, 2 different Symphonia anime artbooks, and Legendia). I have a Zelos figurine, and I've watched all the anime related to the series (Phantasia, Eternia, Symphonia, and Vesperia), and read quite a bit of various manga in the series.

Castlevania - I own every English released Castlevania game but Legends, Dracula X, and Lords of Shadow. I used to own LoS, but I ended up selling to go towards another game. I have a Japanese Judgement guide and the English Symphony of the Night guide, 2 posters from Nintendo Power (Dawn of Sorrow and Castlevania III), an Alucard figurine, the 8-bit Simon figurine, the PoR anniversary box, and the two volumes of the Curse of Darkness manga. I also have a Saint Germain shirt I bought off of Ebay, lol. I'm sure I'm forgetting stuff, but whatever.

Devil May Cry - I own all the games in the series, including the new DmC. I have all the novels, manga, and anime. I also have a display box for the new DmC.

Don't think I can say I'm full on hardcore on anything. But I do become invested in characters in the stuff I do like and defend them.

And a good number more...

I started playing Phantasy Star on Master System over the summer, and for some reason, I got really into it. Beat it in like 3 days. Then I got Phantasy II, III and IV on genesis. I skipped III because of what people said about it. But man, I II and IV were awesome games, miles ahead of what the competition was doing at the time.

Then Final Fantasy VI came out and blew all of them out of the water, but still, awesome games.

The early Phantasy Star titles just carried some kind of inexplicable charm. :)

I feel your pain, except for me it's the Darkstalkers series which I've sunk way too much money into as I mentioned above. As it turns out though Bob Chipmen talked about the Darkstalkers saturday morning cartoon which I also mentioned in my above post on today's "Big Picture" http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/the-big-picture/6779-Tooned-Out (http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/the-big-picture/6779-Tooned-Out) hilarious stuff. Makes me tempted to actually watch more of the 13 episode abomination. Of course most of the time when I've thought that I've found myself going "Naah, I'll just rewatch the OVA instead."

I can't say I own game soundtracks on CD's, or figurines, but I have a lot of Gradius and Bubble Bobble series games, plus Gradius's spinoff Parodius, and some Twinbee.

That feel when...
Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time: Official Trailer (E3 2011) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1bb_JRkAOk#ws)
You realize you've been waiting over 7 years for the one game that will make you buy a current gen console, which just came out. And you'll still have to wait a year or two at least for the PS3 and the game's prices to come down to reasonable (particularly considering how close next-gen is on the horizon) sub $300+ levels.

PS - And the realization that if there ever is a sequel you won't be able to play it because of how shitty and overpriced Sony's next console will assuredly be.

I haven't really been hardcore on anything since I was a kid & then it was Mario/Nintendo in general & Street Fighter once I had my first taste of Street Fighter II. I used to write original plays based in the Super Mario Bros. 1-3 universe in 2nd & 3rd grade...does that count? I was also the first girl at my grade school to wear the "ox horn" hairstyle made so popular by the First Lady of fighting herself, Chun-Li. Oh, dunno if it counts since I never got to play any of the games, but I guess I kinda had a wide-on for Sailor Moon from the age of 8-16; owned the dolls, some manga (was hard to come by), VHS/DVD's, the moon wand & scepter, Chibi Usa's Luna ball-assorted stuff. I used to set my old VCR to record the show while I was at school & God forbid it was on the fritz & didn't kick on in time...

Ooh, ooh, I almost forgot-Hamtaro! I still gotz all muh plushie, VHS & DVD's, the little
plastic playsets, the GB & GBA titles-snap, I loved that show! It came out in America around the time I got my first hamster, the bitin'-est little Siberian dwarf ever-Nibbler. I loved that little gal...*sigh*

Now, off to youtube! I've got a hankering for the ending theme song! Heke! *Hamtaro sound effect*

If I may quote a pair of wise, time traveling sages, he is indeed "most excellent". *sigh* Now I'm all moon faced & doe eyed over here, filled with nostalgia & reminiscing about my teenage years. Not to start sounding all cliché, but it really does fly by. I'm 28 now & sometimes it seems like 2003 was just last year, or sometimes like it should still BE that year; other times, it feels like ages ago & part of me has trouble believing I was ever that young & experienced what I did back then. But enough whimsy from this haggard old broad, you kids get back to your video game discussion. I'ma go knit a new depression shawl while I rock slowly on my front porch (I really do know how to knit...).

I know the feels (being 28 myself), with creaking bones, sore joints, gray hairs, the works! Last I remember I was running out until 4 in the morning, slamming Mountain Dews like nobody's business and playing MGS2 all the time. When did I suddenly turn into Old Snake?  :'(

Now, now, dear-come, sit a spell beside old Laina. Ain't no use a frettin'. Pick a color & I'll knit you a shawl to comfort those weary old bones...

Yeah, that's pretty much it, only throw in a Thunderdome or two & machineguns are mandatory for all upstanding citizens. Now taking applications for residency! Get in on the ground floor!

Once upon a time, Metal Gear. But post-Peace Walker, we had a falling out and a rather ugly divorce over some of Hideo Kojima's more... questionable content inclusions. It remains to be seen whether Ground Zeroes will fix any of this and mend a relationship I really would love to have back.

He's at least promising that the game will cover "very mature themes", so thanks for the heads up, man.

Currently? Skyrim, Castlevania, Devil May Cry (and DmC has only made me that much more of a nutter for the series).
