Title: Aliens: Colonial Marines
Post by: PFG9000 on February 18, 2013, 06:56:33 PM
Has anybody been playing this?  It's been a big topic of discussion at GameFAQs recently.  The game looked amazing in the previews.  But I got suspicious when it was two or three days before launch and not a single demo or review had been released.  The game launched, and the fanbase was enraged to find that the game was very different than the previews.  The graphics had been scaled back almost to PS2 quality.  The screen tearing is the worst I've seen in any game.  The campaign is really short, and it's glitchy and buggy as hell.

I'm still having a lot of fun with it, mostly in multiplayer.  But I'm pissed that Gearbox deceived the fans.  I feel like they lied to us and did a bait-n-switch.  The worst thing is that this was the best chance we had to get a great Aliens game.  Fox was behind it and it was developed as a Canon sequel to Aliens.  It's still worth trying out for diehard Aliens fans, but you might want to rent before you buy.

Shamefully misleading advertising there. From what I've heard what happened was that Gearbox was too busy working on their own IP, Borderlands 2, and wound up farming out large sections of Colonial Marines to other developers. By the time they finished Borderlands 2 and saw how messed up it was SEGA and FOX were both pressuring for an immediate release. So Gearbox just shat out the game before they lost the license.
I'm not even a huge Aliens fan but this is just terrible.

I'm glad we now have a cannon game that takes place after the disappointing Alien 3 file (though I do watch it from time to time). But yes, the graphics seem to have taken a huge hit. I find the game to be about as lengthy as the PS3 AvP game. I personally enjoyed it enough to finish it on the very weekend I purchased it. The things that does bother me aside from the graphics is the lack of info digging that was prevalent in AvP. Finding all the dog tags and other secrets are not very well indicated either.

I hear people are calling Colonial Marines "The Blunder of the Century." Man, gearbox really dropped the ball on it...

I have heard ACM as nothing but pure and total garbage. Even Gamespot shows that both critics and gamers alike have panned the game.

Game was painful to play through, even being a fan of the movies

I wouldn't reccomend it to anyone. I only played 3 hours the first day and decided not to continue playing. I've watched some videos on YouTube and the game never changes.
The graphics look horrible, it doesn't have the Alien characteristic look, the gameplay is generic and it wastes some good oportunities to do something different, the music is not nearly as good as the music from the movies, the story doesn't add anything important to the saga.
I think it does not deserve the name it carries.
