Title: Castlevania style game from overhead perspective
Post by: Ofthenight on February 20, 2013, 01:46:15 AM

(https://castlevaniadungeon.net/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Feveofebon.weebly.com%2Fuploads%2F1%2F4%2F2%2F2%2F14222283%2F1358657139.png&hash=0558e959af7b684607714df084e0f663)

Intro

Fellow castlevania fans, I'm very excited to introduce a game that has consumed my life and others over the last year of of game development, with another 2 years of story invested, it's called Eve of Ebon. I have one confession to make first to the community, this game is from the overhead perspective, but I have decided to try and capture as much as that castlevania feel as possible. We're not a clone of castlevania, we just draw much inspiration from the series, the story, variety of monsters, the exploration, we just decided another perspective was better for this game having coop.
As a fan, I've played all the castlevania except Dracula X and a couple of the portable versions, with SOTN being my favorite tied with the original, and Simon's Quest being my least favorite(however I still enjoyed it)

Story

The name Eve of Ebon refers to the days of Ebon, when the ancient brood, a distant more primal cousin to the vampire, awaken from their frozen slumber during the warmest summers every 21 years. The Ebon is an entire week when the Brood feast on the people of Iden before returning to hibernation. Our game takes place before, during, and after the events of the The Ebon. However, unlike previous awakenings, humanity has grown to a force that actually threatens the vampire legion of Niven,  amassing an army over twenty times that of the vampire Legion. A secret truce is devised between humanity and vampires to stop the brood and end the war. It will take an elite group of special warriors to accomplish this task. The Siven, born of vampire and human blood, are the only ones who can transverse the daylight scorns and use the power of darkness on a journey to destroy the Brood in their slumber. The night awaits and the eve approaches... The Eve of Ebon.

Gameplay

Eve of Ebon is an overhead coop slasher RPG.  Loot and equip various capes and weapons that react differently against undead and humans. As a Siven(half vampire) use the light and darkness to your advantage, forcing undead into the light, and blinding humans in the darkness. This goes even further, each Siven has genetic strengths and weakness in each light/dark setting, some regenerate health quicker in darkness for example, use our perk system to customize this to lurk the light or own the darkness...or both, it's up to you.

Playable characters...

The strength of our game, each half vampire is the best Siven within the clans of the Legion, hand picked.

Arcasin

(https://castlevaniadungeon.net/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.weebly.com%2Fuploads%2F1%2F4%2F2%2F2%2F14222283%2F1358655275.png&hash=660a6c0e643c4185ac86f92623101b80)

Arcasin's massive sword stems from the secretive vampire fighting style know as "Daytora" which means-power from the ancients. The style is normally reserved for full vampires, and those of elder blood at that. Only a few remain that understand the combat style fully.
Arcasin's father was an ancient vampire, and taught him the vicious style of offensive combat. It teaches to abandon defense for hyper aggressive attacks, bashing through feeble shields and driving an opponent's block attempt straight through their bodies.  Arcasin has a savage thrist for human blood despite being only half vampire, yet he remains sympathetic to his human mother's family.

Class: Vanguard
Clan: Oryicon upper class
Strengths: Attack Power, Health Regen(in total darkness)

Norroth
(https://castlevaniadungeon.net/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Feveofebon.weebly.com%2Fuploads%2F1%2F4%2F2%2F2%2F14222283%2F1127899570_orig.jpg&hash=bd7efc58b26a73ad6f42ca7b9ae0e928)

Norroth only received partial sunlight tolerance unlike most other vampire hybrids. As a child, he and his mother's vampire lineage was exposed by humans and they were forced to perform the religious "Unity of Light." They endured the sunlight slowly, stripping away their articles of clothing until death. Norroth's partial sunlight tolerance spared his life, but his full blooded vampire mother was not as fortunate. After nearly a week of torture, Norroth's skin was charred black to point of full sunlight resistance. He was eventually found by the elite ghostly vampire clan known as The Devos, the Legion's vampire rangers of the winter tundra. There he was raised as one of their own and trained in the clan's arts of war, specifically spear combat and close quarter tactics. The Devo's used Norroth's sunlight tolerance as a scout against human and undead.

Class: Strider
Clan: Devos
Strengths: Melee range, explosiveness, melee defense

Vespia
(https://castlevaniadungeon.net/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.weebly.com%2Fuploads%2F1%2F4%2F2%2F2%2F14222283%2F1358656043.png&hash=4fe13d04fa3c1d76a171f6a80eb72ff6)

Vespia is part human witch, half vampire assassin that hails from the elite Sarrel forest, now working as a mercenary for the right price. She was once a call girl that served the vampire aristocrats until she was brutally raped and tortured for her partial human bloodline. Unfortunately for her tormentors, her human mother was a sorcerer that could wield the power of ice. Vespia inherited this, and in her rage she calls upon this lineage to create anything from ice blades to arrows, and even small storms that blanket enemies with shrapnel of ice. After being arrested for killing her wealthy tormentors, she was rescued by Romel, leader of the assassins in Sarrel for her unique abilities. By far the most feared assassin in Iden, Vespia has earned the nickname "The Blue Widow."

Class: Mage Assassin
Clan: Sarrel
Strengths: Mana regen(sunlight), range, movement speed

Screens/Media(camera can be zoomed in or out in gameplay)

OMG yes! it doesn't look like your typical indie game, it looks like someone wants to make a fun game!

I believe that all indie game creators want to create fun games...
true, but most Indie devs usually think that retro is a perfect excuse to make a mario clone with rear atari graphic only because they have up to 2 developers on their team.

but they don't realize that some of the best games ever made were made from a 4 man group, all sporting great detailed graphics and sound.

In other words, I like it when Indie Devs "TRY" to give indie a good name after Pretentious scum like Phil Fish and Jonathan Blow gave the Indie Brand a Terrible rap.

The first thing that come to my head is Cave Story when I think in Indie, it doesnt have great detailed graphics and sounds and have been made by 1 person, Maybe thats the only Indie game that I played.

Thanks for the compliments.  :) I have another character attached below to check out.

The Brood.

The Brood are a cousin to the vampire, a more primal branch their evolution took millions of years ago. The Brood are in hibernation until the warmest summers every 21 years, melting the snow-caps in Iden and awakening the Brood in their mountain slumber. The brood typically don't attack vampires, but much has changed greatly since their last awakening. During the week of Ebon, the Brood fill the day sky with enough numbers to blot out the sun at times. The only option for humans is to retreat and hide. Their shrills are legendary and deafening, they can be heard at the beginning of the awakening, terrifying calls that echo throughout Iden as the Brood's hunger overtakes them setting out for food.
Physically the Brood are massive, quick, and powerful winged creatures that can take alot of abuse. Their exoskeleton provides protection against most forms of attack. Their only known weaknesses is fire.

Update***

We got coop up running for the first time last night for the first time :) Many of the elements didn't convert over the network yet but it still was good to see 3 players on the server versus 1 for the entire development duration.

Wow! Just wow! You already have a network system in the game?ยน Bravo!

Thanks everyone.

UPDATE

Also I would like to know what we could do to add some castlevania flair to the game, being a top down I would love for castlevania fans to say this game had that feel other than the camera perspective. We have tons of crazy enemies from
Greek mythology and traditional horror and a more gritty style.

Music, we've have enlisted the legendary BrunuhVille for soundtracks for our game, actually these songs will be in our game.

Gothic Music - Allure Of Darkness (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MfuFbe_U--g#ws)

Gothic Music - The Everlasting Symphony (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zcrkNhn5V2g#)
(especially love the later half of this song)

And Chase Bethea, worked on the new Tomb Raider game:

https://soundcloud.com/#chase-bethea-1/eve-of-ebon-theme (https://soundcloud.com/#chase-bethea-1/eve-of-ebon-theme)

So far we have about 14 tracks for the game.

Not bad animation at all. The artwork looks amazing indeed. The trick is that the game matches the art style, if you can hit that mark then you probably got a real gem on your hands. What is the game being made in?

@ Gunlord Thank you!

@ Neobelmont thanks, it was Christian Quinot as our concept artist.

The art ingame is about as close as we could ever get it to run on mobile devices and PC, its built in Unity3D. Thank you very much.

Also doing a short graphic novel for each of the three main characters before the game comes out. This pic is from Norroth's in the first post. Heres a sneak peek, art by John Jackson(so lucky to have this guy!)

Ahhhh..there we go a Maya Screen Shot and your using Unity. Who's doing your modeling anyways? You should really post rendered pics with a 360 turnaround. Would like to see what the Wolfie looks like from all sides and maybe a wireframe. Off first glance it looks nice though.

Pretty cool! Make sure he adds those other maps i.e. spec, normals, etc. and your game is going to pop! Noticed the props he did too on his site with Zbrush. Can't wait to see how your environments and level designs turn out. Be sure to check out my website as well. I am a sucker for this kind of work! lol

Update*

Things are going well, we've been adding new enemy types, honing gameplay and AI over the last few weeks. Things are looking good. We're added in some sounds fx recently to the combat and that helped tremendously!

We'll be sending out some testplayers through unity in a bit, basically a webplayer version of a demo to play. If anyone is interested, like and or share us(both will increase chances lol) on facebook and link me to it in a PM and I'll gather them. Heres our facebook:

Based on the storyline here, and the possible interconnection to modern mythology, is it possible that Dracula could make an appearance as an ally/boss?

The Brood are a hive mind correct? Depending on how it is structured, Dracula could either seek to try and help you destroy the Brood, or attempt to enslave The Brood for his own purposes.

You mentioned potentially making it more like Castlevania, and including Greek Mythology. Lycaon is an ancient Greek figure that tested Zeus by feeding him his own son, to see if Zeus was truly omniscient. When Zeus realized this, he turned Lycaon into a wolf, and murdered his children. You could include Lycaon as an antagonist.

I would mention including such monsters as Medusa, but she is lacking in the werewolf/vampire comparative department.

I hope I have given you guy some ideas. The game is looking really cool!

Good ideas for sure. I always thought about having Dracula tie into our games somehow, but overall the idea was to have a fresh take on vampires and their elders. It's still not out of the question though.  ;D

Heres some more screenshots btw.  This is our version of "health packs" ;)

Thanks kaonstantine, heres another look at in it in action along with some other features, mind you many of the elements aren't 100%, much the code is working, but the animations need tweaking.

We would like some community feedback to help us along the development process. As of now we have fixed the health bar in the vid were its more visible.

Looking good, what's the frame rate at? My suggestion is to have the cam zoom in for close ups during maybe the final hit of special attacks. Kinda like DMC or Samuari Showdown so you can show off the details in the characters. I was expecting the cam to that in the vid for some reason....lol

Thanks. I think in that vid the framerate was 130fps, can't remember but it was over 100fps for sure. I know with 180 enemy AI onscreen we were still getting 30fps on a decent computer. We even had a rig run the game with 400 AI and was getting playable framerates lol. The goal for me would be around 60fps with 40 AI onscreen on most PCs.

Yeah we're thinking about maybe a zoom like you were talking about for the throat bite etc, didn't think about that for special attacks though, not a bad idea

We started building a random dungeon generator a few weeks ago. Basically we will have set pieces every so often, but the majority of the environment will be random. A few titles do this now, PoE and torchlight I believe.

Very nice. You should have the camera zoom in to a Medium Shot of the character you are talking to during the dialogue sequences. (Think Knights of the Old Republic). The combat seems very hack and slash (which is cool) but you should slow it down. Maybe add a parry function to the character. (Think Metal Gear Solid Revengeance.) That would add some strategy to the combat. Also, I think I mentioned it before, but you should have the camera pam, tilt, and zoom in for special attacks. You really should show off your models! I hope I have been helpful, I tried to be specific as possible for you. I would love to help beta if possible. I have some free time while updating my 3D portfolio.

fireswell looks better now. I have to congratulate you guys, because you are creating something interesting. The wind blowing, the background noises, the interface design... all is consistent. even being a pre-alpha, there's an obscure atmosphere in your game i found enjoyable. I liked the design of the dialogue boxes. I know I'm asking too much, but would be great if you could add voice to the dialogues.

Different strokes for different folks. Sometimes distant camera is something i am thankful for. I found it annoying when the zoom goes in and out all the time, but totally agree with darkmanx about the parry function

I hope I have been helpful, I tried to be specific as possible for you. I would love to help beta if possible. I have some free time while updating my 3D portfolio.

Yeah we are looking into some slight changes in the camera, but a lot of that is just polish and super easy to do. The parry function on the other hand is another animal. It could easily work well, but look really bad in motion, or vice versa, not to mention all the different enemy types and all the code involved for something like to work is crazy, but who knows. Those are just the sort of things that are incredibly difficult, not impossible though. As always good stuff darkmanx, thanks

fireswell looks better now.

Thank kaonstantine! I'm glad the style speaks to you.. Voicing dialogue isn't totally out of the question, but I would need an actual budget probably haha

@darkmanx

I think the final was close to 8k, we can afford it since its a boss character and only 1 of these onscreen

@Lelygax

Thank you very much, the character took a while to nail the look we wanted, lots of revisions.

Looking for a UI artist if anyone is interested.

New video, nothing fancy, just a little test with the AI to gauge how they can alert other AI, room on the left has a box inside it, and once moved this alerts the two AI in the room to the right when he screams.

Just an update, its been awhile.

Added in some new hud art, and in this vid we were messing around with combining 2 separate dark mana powers, the spin atk and speed burst. It has a nice ranged effect and blended in well. We also show the light/dark stats system up and running in the menu.

Also looking for an level designers if interested, think castlevania from the overhead perspective. :)

Thanks guys. It means a lot! It hasn't been an easy road at all with development, and I don't see it smoothing out either. It's difficult for ppl to understand why we would want to do a castlevania style game from this perspective, but playing it, and seeing it working, that gets me excited :)

I totally miss this project.

Nah, this project misses you! Bring over some of those skills :P

We need some help on the level design side badly, art is pretty much done, maybe some environmental stuff could be done, more textures etc, but that's about it. That goes for anyone.

PM me some of your environment concept art bro. I actually need to update my portfolio, website, practice etc. Also I am all about making props and assists i.e. environmental, weapons, tileable textures etc. so if you have concept art for that hit me up. I'll be happy to help you and contribute.
