I'm in the small minority of people who don't think it's very good, and not really scary at all.
For a few reasons-
1. The game isn't scary because you get spells fairly early on which allow you to restore your health and sanity by just walking in circles to build magic in a completely empty and safe room, of which there are many, for a minute or so then casting it. So I never had to deal with the "sanity effects" of the game.
2. Each area is recycled (with slight changes) 3 or 4 times so it started to feel really repetitious to me.
3. The monsters are mostly easy to evade and most of your weapons are melee, so you don't have to worry too much about them getting you or running out of ammo.
4. The mythology of the game, which lots of people seem impressed with, is wholly lifted from the works of H. P. Lovecraft with a few name changes. It's hard to overstate Lovecraft's influence on the modern horror genre but this is a straight pastiche of his Cthulhu mythos, and I would recommend anyone who liked it to read "The Call of Cthulhu" and "The Shadow Over Innsmouth" (my personal favorite) at least.
Just be warned that Lovecraft was, not all that surprisingly for a sheltered white Rhode Island man in the 1920s and 30s, a xenophobic racist and this often shows in his writing. Though he had started to broaden his views before his early death.
PS- I still need to finish the game, I just got really tired of the repetition about 2 levels before beating it a couple years ago and haven't gone back yet.

I know some of Lovecraft works, this games seems to be interesting but boring at the same time then.

Well, most people love it. The game mechanics themselves aren't crippled like in, say, the early/traditional Resident Evil titles. But I guess that's where a lot of the horror in "survival horror" comes for me.

I like the mechanics from the old REs, the commands are like this?
-
No, the mechanics are very smooth.
And it's a great game. Disregard Ratty. :p Though admittedly you have to kind of force yourself to not restore your sanity in order to experience the effects.
hau auu~

It must be cool to be insane, now I remembered that I've seen a brief video about this game in GameTrailers' Top 10.

it's a very good game: not too difficult or cervellotic, but very atmospheric and nice story. great music.

You might try poking around at the Gamingforce Interactive forums. They're a community built around ripping game music, and you can find sound effects for some games there. http://www.gamingforce.org/forums/ (http://www.gamingforce.org/forums/)
I've played Eternal Darkness a few times, but never more than an hour or two into it. It's alright, just not compelling enough for me to go on. I do like a lot of the older Survival Horror games, and I adore H.P. Lovecraft. It's been near the top of my Need-To-Play-Through list for years.

If you want an old school hard Lovecraftian survival horror game there's always the original http://www.gog.com/gamecard/alone_in_the_dark (http://www.gog.com/gamecard/alone_in_the_dark)
