...in order to learn how to make good games again. It doesn't sound like it worked out too well though...

Many critics have even praised this game more highly than recently released titles like Final Fantasy XIII.
Maybe because its not a CG fest with limited exploration and "fake" level ups.
Some employees suggested adding more cutscenes and turning the game into an MMORPG.
They want to make the game better and they suggest the things that are wrong? How do they plan to do a interesting MMO if they dont even can do a normal game be interesting anymore?
Wada cancelled the “RPG Juku” program after it was discovered that employees really enjoyed playing Super Mario RPG and continued to play it after the three-day period.
New RPG Juku idea: Torture them, now that they have played a good game, make them play any of the games that Square-Enix finds to be the worst made by then, for a week. So they will learn what they CAN'T do, instead of trying to shove the good things on them, since they just doesnt understand the message in the easy way.
Briefing the things: Newcomers hardly will know or understand how to change a masterpiece to better, let them first try to turn something utterly bad in something good, so they will learn properly how to improve games. Its the same of giving a plenty of gold to someone and say "go home and be a businessman", the guy simply doesnt will know how to spend this money in a lucrative way, because of his lack of experience.

One employee was fired after they said that “the ease from going to point A to B on the world map” was one of the top features of the game.
lolwut? You'd think that a fun, neat-looking, easy-to-use map system would be something of interest. I love how SMRPG carried over the SM3/SMW world map.
Man... Super Mario RPG... That game came out at the perfect time for me. I'd never really played an RPG before (besides a little dabbling in the first Final Fantasy and trying to figure out why anybody would play it) and had never even heard of the game, but I got it for Christmas, didn't know what to expect from looking at the box, and got sucked in when I played the game. I did absolutely EVERYTHING one could possibly do in that game, plugging away countless hours to achieve certain tasks (Thwomp's jump challenge? that Final Fantasy boss?). I'd NEVER do a thing like that nowadays; work and depression and ADD and boredom and having too much stuff to do and feeling like a piece of shit for playing video games all day just get in the way of that kind of enjoyment of a game these days.

What happened? You seemed a happy person to me. :(
-
Nah, it's not as bad as I make it sound; I'm cheerful most of the time, but being down in the dumps is a fairly regular feeling in my life. I do suffer from a lot of guilt and low self-esteem put onto me by society and people I know; not that anybody I know directly tries to make me feel like a lowlife, I just have insecurity and paranoia issues.
-
If it become worse seek help, I treated these type of things as normal and look at me now.

That was a great relatable post... i almost spilled my coffee reading it. :D
Mario RPG was a game I enjoyed watching as well as playing... It did have countless little maniacal tasks that definitely kept interest. Now far as Squeenix I think that once they Deviated crossed over to the MMO world, they were going to pay the price for it in standard Rpg Gameplay. IMO i think a Squeenix should have stuck to what they know, improve their game based off of fan feedback and keep their grubby paws off of my hard earned dead presidents! the only way i can commit to the cause again is if FFVII-XII (minus XI) is revived yet again only this time, they can do their fancy CG magical moogle stuff, but keep the gameplay EXACTLY THE SAME!!!!! This will show them they still have fans when it is bought off of shelves and then maybe the Mojo can flow yo!

I still prefer a FF V remake lol
-
Final Fantasy XIII seemed OK looking at the first couple hours.
But "OK" is not enough for FF, it has to be excellent.
Final Fantasy has been decaying as many franchises, and today we look at old titles and we think: what happened?
FF 12 was OK, but better than 13. 13 was better than 13-2, from what I've been told.
I don't know about FF 10, but everyone says 8 was better than 9, and 7 was really praised by everyone (I never played it, I still can't like the graphics).
FF6 was the best in my opinion. Perhaps the best game ever.
And the other ones were each one a masterpiece on its own right.
But from what I see, it improved until 6, then decayed a little until today.
So, what am I saying with all this nonsense? :)
They should make Square Enix employees play FF6 so maybe they will learn how to make an excellent FF.

Huh. You're the first person I've EVER heard who liked 8 over 9.
And for me personally 6 went downhill once they introduced magicite. Now, I have to mold my team into a band of super-heroes instead of learning their intricacies and adapting to situations presented by my team-layout. Suddenly Edgar and Sabin are nuking just like Terra and Celes. SUddenly Terra and Celes are fighting as hard as people like Cyan and Shadow.
-
Y'know, I bin a-thinkin':
Since Squeenix are requiring employees play SMRPG, perhaps they also ought to get 'em to play some old Enix-published games: the "Soul Blazer saga." Soul Blazer and Illusion of Gaia are some incredible action RPGs and I hear Terranigma's great also. It would be cool to get some new action RPGs that are as fun to play as these.
-
Wrong game. Make them play through Secret of Mana and Seiken Densetsu 3.
-
Turn-based RPGs and Action RPGs are two different things, bub. :P

Still got our save file? Rugal?
THE MAGUS SPRITE RULES ALL!

You two played using kaillera?

I actually agree with her-I really liked 8 while 9 was just sorta "meh, s'okay" to me.
The magicite thing never really bothered me in 6 because it made me feel like I didn't really have to worry about constantly keeping a healer in my group because anyone could now fill that roll with the right Esper-it was freeing. Edgar & Sabin were always my go to "ANNIHILATE 'EM ALL!" attack multiple enemies at once badasses because of Edgar's "Tool" command & Sabin's martial arts abilities. I really never used them for much else than those skills. But I can see where you're coming from too-what was freedom to me was taking away a good challenge & making the characters sorta bland to you.

HE CAN SUPLEX A MOTHERFUCKIN' TRAIN!
I'm into FFVI, Super Mario RPG, Secret of Mana, Illusion of Gaia, and Breath of Fire 1. SO MUCH of my Tween years were spent with those games.
That and pummeling (and getting pummeled by) my God-brothers in Super Street Fighter II. Gotta love that SNES.
-
Huh. You're the first person I've EVER heard who liked 8 over 9.
Actually that's what I've been told and read elsewhere.
I played FF6, then FF3 on NDS, FF4 on NDS and FF1 and FF2 on PSP but not complete. Also, FF5 emulated, and I played a couple hours of FF8, FF9, FF10, FF12 and FF13 (but I can't tell because I didn't play them until the end). I never played FF11 or FF13-2, I just have some opinions of people who played them.
And, as I said, I tried more than once playing FF7 but I just can't like it, so I quit it.
And played a few spin-offs, some FF:CC games, the FF7 shooter for PS2, the fighter for PSP, and so on...
But from my experience and opinions I've been told, FF6 is the best by far, and until FF6 it was all perfect, and then every new game seemed to be a little worse than the previous one.
I can't say with accuracy which one is better between 8 and 9 since I only knew a couple hours from each one, but I've been told 8 is better.
Some day I will play them all.
-
I think Squeenix should force their employees to play great games made by their own company like FFVI and Star Ocean. Tell them to do this, only better. If they can do that, they can make quite possibly the best JRPG ever made.
Also, I liked FFVIII more than IX.
-

No hard feelings, Jorge.
Funnily enough, I just bought Secret of Mana on my iphone. I had no idea they re-released it back in 2010. They added some interesting new features to the game like icon shortcuts so you can use spells without going through the entire menu.
As for our save file.. Long gone. :( I still remember we stopped right before the boss fight with Dark Lich. Why didn't we ever finish?
But yeah.. I forgot Super Mario RPG was a turn based RPG.

Oops double post!

If a company is questioning their future, and were at one time, an admirable force in the gaming industry, I think they SHOULD do things like this more often. Look back, almost a history lesson, to games THEY created that were BIG and FUN. Games that were not only resonated with the audience, but were also very solid gaming experiences with tight gameplay fundamentals. Sometimes, I think over the years, companies and franchise try to distance themselves from what they once were only to loose themselves completely. Sometimes you need that reminder of your greatness to inspire you to reach for that level again.
I think the idea of RPG-juku was brilliant. Shame they cancelled it. Secret of Mana(maybe even Seiken Densetsu III), FFVI and Chrono Trigger should've ALL been mandatory for the staff to play through to get a good firm grasp at what Square can accomplish when they get everything RIGHT.
Funny that the person who said one of the top aspects of SMRPG was going from point a to point b, and they were fired. Isn't the whole point A to point B thing what Square's been doing a LOT of lately(especially with Final Hallway XIII)? Maybe in light of this reaction, it means they are finally changing their approach and the way they are thinking regarding their future RPG projects. No more ultra linear roadtrips. I can only hope. It IS funny to see even DO something like this(RPG-juku). It shows that they ARE reassessing their RPG future, and maybe the way they PLANNED some few years ago isn't going so well for them. Hell, if it makes them see the light and we get a age of great Square RPGs, SO frickin' BE IT! Do it, Square!!
Interestingly enough, does anybody think this has some connection to the response that some Japanese gaming companies are abandoning the "making games more Western-like and aimed" to re-evaluate what makes Japanese games good in the first place? It seems like it(Square digging up a title from it's "good old days" to show staff(no doubt a lot of the younger ones) "the right way" to do things. The whole, "We were great once, and we can be great AGAIN!!!". Like I said, I don't mind one bit. Bring it on. It if results in a third Chrono game... FFs with as much stuff to do and explore as the SNES-PS1 games, here are my arms open to embrace you! Give me some sugar!!!
EDIT: DAMMIT, the article was a JOKE. Really wished the Square would've done something like this(looks like they HAVEN'T learned). My standing is still the same, nonetheless.

Huh? But it's not even April yet.

It's not funny because it actually GIVES HOPE that Square might've learned from their mistakes. Realizing it's a joke brings the obvious disheartening answer, "No, they haven't!". I think a lot of us(a lot of fans) want Square to return to it's golden age where their games were tight, well-balanced experiences, where pacing, exploration, story and gameplay felt "just right". Something happened and the balance went all out of wack. It's more harsh because, when they CAN do good things(they come together, put the bullshit aside, and work on making a damn fine game), it's GREAT. :-[ I want that Square back, the good one....

Simple... Screw Enix... bring back Squaresoft and the dream team... And GGs?

I wouldn't screw over the Dragon Quest fans if I were you.

I actually don't believe Enix is the problem. Despite merging, Enix is still producing a steady stream of quality as they did prior to merging. Square's the one that tanking, though one could say prior to the merger, they were already headed down that route. The reason why so many have fond memories of Squaresoft is because of the good choices they made back then, but with guys like Wada, and Toriyama being given far more power than he can control with capable abilities, those glory days are over. Particularly the Square side, it needs a tighter restructuring. They need to trim the fat and re-analyze what made them great in the first place.
Like I said in the other post, it's not part of the joke article, but some Japanese developers realize that they can't pretend to be what they aren't. Some are reassessing their own history and are working on strengthening what made them great in the first place. That's something I think could be beneficial to Square(which is why the notion of RPG-juku was great). I said this before, but sometimes, if you "loose your way", maybe it's time to get a firm reminder of the good you CAN do when everything in the game is done RIGHT. It's not just to go back to an "old way" of game developing more than it is a method of igniting a sense of inspiration. "Why were these games so good?" and "Why did they resonate with so many gamers, and continue to be favorites among the industry?", are questions that should be asked, as well as "What ideas from that development process can we use to improve our new titles?".
