Title: Kitezovania
Post by: Abnormal Freak on March 25, 2013, 04:15:04 AM
I never realized this tidbit (http://www.castlevaniadungeon.net/features/whoswho.html) before: apparently the character designer/animator/director Yasuomi Umetsu did those really kick-ass illustrations from the first N64 Castlevania game. For those unfamiliar with the guy, he's perhaps most notorious for the ultraviolent anime Kite and Mezzo Forte, which in their uncut forms also feature hardcore toon pornography.

Actually, yeah, it's definitely the same guy; compare the faces.

I'd like to think that in a notebook somewhere there exists semi-official artwork of Dracula railing Carrie.

:o That's awesome! I never imagined that he could do the artwork for Castlevania.I love his art, especially the way he draws the eyes.

When I was 14 or however old I was when CV64 came out, I'd stare at the US box art which I assume consists of his drawings (not the cover obviously, but the sides and I think back all had hand-drawn art). Like, I wish there were a full-fledged official Castlevania series artbook with hi-res, giant-print illustrations.

It's fun to have my love for those drawings come full circle with my love for his character designs and animation/directing style in select anime, realizing it's the same person.

According to Wikipedia, he also did the Japanese box art for Contra: Hard Corps.

Like I said before, I wouldn't mind at all if one of the old artists would return to the series. I think this is a style that pleases both the people who like Kojima's take and the ones that are more fond of the old manly barbarian stuff.

AF, they did a sequel called Kite Liberator in 2008 I will try to find them all. Also thanks for remembering me of Laputa: Castle in the Sky, I need to watch it too since it have a lot of content that inspired SEGA for Sonic 3.

edit: Also why I cant rate threads? Its really annoying when I see a good thread and I cant give it 5 stars or something like that.

Kite Liberator is pretty good. Very toned down from the original. I've only seen it dubbed, though. Bleh!

Laputa is da beez kneez. I recently imported the Blu-ray from Hong Kong because the North American release doesn't have literal subtitles. :p

Well, if you want the Blu-ray Disc (BD) with translated English subs, the HK BD has 'em, though it has no English dub. The subtitles on the American BD put out by Disney only have dubtitles and that's such a crock so I imported the HK disc. The Japanese BD also has literal subs (plus the English dub) but it's twice as much if not more than the HK release.

You looking to buy it? DDDHouse.com has it, pretty cheap to ship to the US, dunno about Brazil. YesAsia also sells it.
