Title: Rpg General Discussion
Post by: Neobelmont on April 21, 2013, 09:43:01 PM
I want to make this thread because I love me some rpgs.

As of right now I'm pretty big into the shin megami tensei series. Playing persona 2 and devil summoner: soul hackers on the 3ds it's worth it. And when I'm doing schoolwork I listen to this

Nes: Megami Tensei II Soundtrack (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGEzqWGp2WA#)

To think the series started out on the famicom no less being produced by Namco(t).

I love RPGs, at least in theory. Game immersion allows for a different feel to storytelling than you can get with a movie or a book, and I even derive enjoyment out of grinding turn-based combat to a degree. However my ability to concentrate on most games these days, no matter how much I like them, seems to fizzle out at about the 15 hour mark. The 3 - 10 hour game is ideal for my concentration unfortunately*. And unlike FPSs I can't just pick them up 10 months later because I'll have forgotten names, gameplay mechanics and crucial story elements. All that being said Final Fantasy IX was one of the first games where I fell in love with the world, story and characters instead of just viewing it as a timekiller. That game will always have a special place in my heart and Freya Crescent will always be one of my favorite characters in the medium, her story and the story of her people is tragic and beautiful.

Oh yeah did I mention the FF9 soundtrack rocks to?
Freya's Theme ~ Final Fantasy IX OST ~ Disc 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FfM6WpcOb00#)
While not the best song in the soundtrack (that would be a doozy to decide from) her theme reminds me of the grand sweep of epic tragedy tinged with faint hope you hear in the opening credits of Final Fantasy 6, which is one of the best pieces of music I've ever heard in any game.

It's been a month since I played Chrono Trigger even though I was loving it, should really get back to that...

*This is also the reason I tend to watch movies in 30 minute segments these days, no matter how much I like the movie I catch my mind wondering after that point. Whereas when I was a kid I could watch the awfullest dreck with rapt attention.

I was an RPG buff for a while, but meh... They kinda bore me pretty bad now. I like Fire Emblem. Then again, most RPGs aren't really RPGs, you're just forced to battle and read, battle and read, battle and read. At least Fire Emblem gives you a lot of customizability. I mean, yeah when you battle and read, battle and read, you're playing out the role of the characters handed to you so I guess it's still technically role-playing.

I still like Front Mission. I want to get into Langrisser, but Front Mission is still by far my favorite RPG series. My only gripe is character builds are pretty much pre-ordained. You can't really build a short-ranged character as a sniper or brawler. You could try, but your stats would be so off by late game, the final missions would be pretty damned difficult. But as far as story goes, it's one of the best as far as the whole series is concerned.

I love me Seiken Densetsu, but it's more like an action game like Zelda, where you don't even realize there's a story until a cut-scene interrupts the gameplay. But Front Mission always has a story. That's what I like about Fire Emblem too. And I think Langrisser is the same way but I need to play English translations and make sure I have the time to play them straight through.

Well there's always The Elder Scrolls and Fallout if you want to customize the character and have more freedom over how you pursue the story. Though this topic does seem primarily geared more toward jRPGs than cRPGS.

Replaying FFIV DS. Guh, I don't know why I always have trouble with Barbariccia.  I just suck at that one boss, even in different versions of the game. >_>

Anyway, onwards to Agart...

If you ever find someone that's never played the Tales series, or rather, anyone that's never played Tales Of Phantasia, make them play the Super Famicom version. Actually fuck that, they don't even need to play it; they just need to see the intro and they'll be a fan of the Tales series after that.

Seriously... IT'S FUCKING JPOP WITH LYRICS ON THE SNES!!!! A man on the moon was a hoax, but this was fucking real!!

(actually I've been playing some NES games that have quite a bit of vocals in them too, but not to that extent)

I love RPG's, but only when they appeal to what I look for in a game.
Otherwise, they tend to bore me.

That being said, my favourite games ever not counting Castlevania are almost all RPG's (or kinda)...

Radiata Stories, Valkyrie Profile 2, Star Ocean 3 and 4, Final Fantasy 3, 4, 6, Valkyria Chronicles, Chrono Trigger, Vandal Hearts 1 and 2, Eternal Sonata, Grandia III, Tales of the Abyss, Chocobo's Dungeon...

And other favourites also have a lot of RPG elements...

Okami, Twilight Princess, Gargoyle's Quest II, the Metroid series, Alundra, Demon's Crest, Act Raiser...

Also, my favourite type of Castlevania is MetroidVania, because of the same reason: the RPG elements, exploration, leveling up, items, etc...

What can i say? I have played 80% of RPG games that they have come out and i'm still looking for more, but saddly, i can't find anything to satisfy my last. I'm currently playing, Dragon's Dogma for the PS3, Queen's Blade Spiral Chaos, 7th Dragon 2020 for the psps and valkyrie profile for the 100 time..... :P

This brings up a question. What is an rpg how do you define it since from my understanding then everything is an rpg. everything....

Every boss in FF IV does have a very specific strategy behind them. Even more-so them some of the others out there. For Barabariccia you'll definitely want to keep Kain alive as his jump attack is the only thing that will break through Barbariccia's twister mode. What I generally do  is level up some, make sure I have the best gear and weapons, and lot's and lots of health-related items. I usually don't have trouble with her but occasionally do I get my ass handed to me. Than again Barbariccia's quite the looker so I don't mind if she does that  :-[

Chrono Trigger - Corridors of Time (Zeal Theme) Acapella (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JtKCt8Afk9s#ws)

Final Fantasy VII Battle Theme Acapella (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PfrsvfcZ8ZE#ws)

Barbariccia is cool in FF IV: After Years. I've played FF IV until the part that Tellah sa... wait! I remember it now, I've even reached the moon and started exploring it, then I stopped. lol

My first RPG game was Brave Fencer Musashi, that came with a bonus disc containing a demo from Final Fantasy 8. I played it and found it cool (but to say the truth its kinda a stange at the time, I even thought that by pressing X at the right time could do more damage or increase the chance of hitting enemies... Things of a person that didn't even knew RPGs lol) and then asked my mom to buy it. Since my PSX box have screenshots of famous games with the name of them below the image, I've seen Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy Tactics in it and asked if my parents could buy then too in the future. Shortening the story I've been gifted with FF Anthology (FF V and FF VI) too while the years passed.

I've finished FF VIII with the help of a magazine that said all thing about FF VIII only (walkthough, secrets, boss weakness, ALL). But my game ever crash in the credits, so I dont ever know until today if a New Game+ or something like that exists.

I've gained this game in my birthday, it have a sentimental value to me. One decision that I did and simply cant forgive is that I've visited a friend of my friend house and decided to show this game to him. Then when I decided to go back to my home I've take all the game covers/boxes thinking that he have put all CDs back (things that everyone that I know does). Shortening this story too, until today I dont have these CDs and he simply refuses to pay for them. At least he "found" my Parasite Eve 2 Disc1 in his house years later. But Im without my Siphon Filter 2 Disc1 and all of my Final Fantasy 8 Discs (Yeah, he did it, I've forgot only disc 1 in his house, but one of those days that he was in my house, he took the cover and the others 3 discs too, without my presence in the same room, obviously).

I've seem only one game of the Tales series for PSX when a friend played it in PC. I like RPGs like Tactics Ogre and Final Fantasy Tactics too (Bomberman Wars is a bit boring).

Someone else have played Monster Rancher 2 for PSX? Its a revolutionary game if we stop to think about that, we could put ANY CD in the PSX and the game would create a monster based in the data that was inside this CD.

Never played Monster Rancher 2, but I played Monster Rancher EVO on the PS2. What was so awesome about it was that you could use DVDs and CDs to produce monsters! I wish I hadn't of sold that game for money a long time ago.  Oh well. I play My Monster Rancher on my Ipod Touch nowadays. I still love Monster Rancher!  ;D

But yeah. I've been a HUGEEEEE fan of RPGs since I was a kid. My first RPG ever was Super Mario RPG. My dad didn't like RPGs, so this was the only RPG I had until I got a PS1 for my 10th birthday. After I got my PS1, I bought and rented SO MANY RPGs! At first, I only owned Digimon World 2, Threads of Fate, and Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure (all RPG-ish). However, I didn't truly get into RPGs until I picked up Lunar 2 Eternal Blue Complete as my 4th PS1 game. I fell in love with that game, and that's how my love of RPGs started. To this day, Lunar 2 is still my favorite game ever just because of the impact it had on me as a kid. I had never seen a game with anime scenes and voice acting before (I don't count Rhapsody's singing as voice acting, lol). It blew my mind back then!

Right now I'm still currently playing Fire Emblem Awakening. After I finish Awakening, I plan to try Fire Emblem: Monshō no Nazo next. Of course I still have other RPGs lying around that I need to finish like Persona 3 and 4, Disgaea 3 and 4, Legend of Dragoon, Grandia, Tales of Graces F (I beat the main game, just not the Future Arc)...and the list goes on.  :-\

Speaking of FE:A, is it wrong to give Sumia a Beastkiller or give Cherche a Wyrmslayer? Or even Panne a Beastkiller or Nowi and Tiki a Wyrmslayer? I did it in one of my battles purely by accident and it just struck me as odd seeing Sumia do 159 damage to a pegasus or Cherche do 138 damage to a wyvern.

This guy is awesome! And he did this
Castlevania - Bloody Tears Acapella (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2AFqYeXKK3I#)

An Acapella version of Bloody Tears?! It's like the Castlevania - Carmen Sandiago crossover that had only existed in fanfiction come to life!

But seriously these are extremely neat and impressive, thanks for bringing them to my attention. And that's the area of Chrono Trigger I just completed/got locked out of! :D

Wow! Those two songs are almost identical and despite a few notes being different the two blend together nicely. I wonder if the composer of ChronoTrigger was a fan of that 80's Classic song and composed Robo's theme around it.

I get bored with classic Jrpg games like Final fantasy or Dragon Quest pretty fast. Still, I consider FF7, FF8 and FF Origins to be my favorites. But my super best ever created absolute favorite :) is Radia Senki - Reimeihen on Nes! There's nothing special about it, but I can't forget how pleasant it was - to find this game, to play it, to talk about it, and finally beat it. Completely satisfying in every aspect.

This game have "reflect", "shell" and "protect" magic right? If this game have the ability "cover", use it. Also your white mage should be healing all the time in a battle, unless everyone have a full HP. Never played FF9, but I beat FF4: After Years and its much harder than any FF that I've played when you reach the final area (FF NES games doesnt counts, they are harder lol)

Ability-wise, go all-out; make your characters immune to all the status effects he can inflict that you can defend against, and equip Auto-Regen and Auto-Haste.  Physical attackers should have Bird Killer, MP Attack, and Auto-Reflect and your healers should have Reflect-Null.  If you're using Freya, give her High Jump. If you're using Vivi and/or Amarant, give them Return Magic.

Give everyone you can equips that will let them absorb/resist Doomsday. If you make a party member immune to Holy, Ozma may waste turns casting Holy on that party member. If you make one character level 95 (is it too late for you?) and put them in your party, Ozma will cast Level 5 Death, and only that one character will be affected.

Ozma doesn't have a lot of HP, so hit him hard and fast and with luck you'll win.  If you still can't do it, see spoilers for more advanced stuff:

Every boss in FF IV does have a very specific strategy behind them. Even more-so them some of the others out there. For Barabariccia you'll definitely want to keep Kain alive as his jump attack is the only thing that will break through Barbariccia's twister mode. What I generally do  is level up some, make sure I have the best gear and weapons, and lot's and lots of health-related items. I usually don't have trouble with her but occasionally do I get my ass handed to me. Than again Barbariccia's quite the looker so I don't mind if she does that  :-[

If you haven't played the DS version... her move-set differs somewhat and it always trips me up.  Her lightning counter is AWFUL, and messes up my rhythm. I can beat her but she really tears into my party; if she uses Maelstrom and you've already entered in an attack command, she can and will wipe out the party unless Kain is in the air or you're lucky enough that the attack doesn't trigger her counter.  And when I was a kid her Counter: Petrify drove me up the wall. >:(

Have you tried some Japanese-only old-school games?  Try Sweet Home for the NES; it's one of the best NES games I've played!

I have the gba ff iv advance I beat every boss except one and that's zenomorus z, x? I cannot remember his name he's a secret boss of that final big ace boss thing in iv. also Rydia is very pretty or in this case yeah....

Also for Gaawa-senpai

Ah, Rydia... I've always considered myself straight as a rod but if Rydia was a real woman, I... I... I'm not gonna say anymore.  :-[

Lol, I love that video. XD

If you ever find someone that's never played the Tales series, or rather, anyone that's never played Tales Of Phantasia, make them play the Super Famicom version. Actually fuck that, they don't even need to play it; they just need to see the intro and they'll be a fan of the Tales series after that...

(actually I've been playing some NES games that have quite a bit of vocals in them too, but not to that extent)

Hmm... I haven't played the SNES version of Phantasia.

Emerald Dragon on the SNES has some VA work, and it was used pretty effectively. I wish that game had a better battle system, though; it boiled down to "Is your level high enough? Then you'll win.  If it's not? Go grind."

I present Lagrange point
*Googles*

"Lagrange Point has the distinction of being the only game ever released with Konami's VRC7 sound generator Integrated Circuit, which allowed for a drastic improvement in the quality of the music and sound effects used in the game."

*Adds game to huge list of to-play games*

My favorite OST on the NES is from Journey to Silius.  Composition in that game is stellar.
/watch?v=gb_pBN-xCZo
/watch?v=cLyds36tRRA
Song that starts around 6:20 in the first video is one of the longest songs on the NES, about 3 minutes and 30 seconds long. I never heard the whole thing when I was a kid playing the game; it never occurred to me to just stop and listen to it. >_>

I loooooooooove it.  Gotta admit that OST you linked is damn impressive, though.  Geez...

Valkyrie Profile! Play it, Love it, Have sex with it. Resell it afterwards and start fresh.

I love Valkyrie, but i love even more the second one, also it has the best graphics i have seen for the pS2.

I've meant to try that one for a long time. The movie was a really poignant exploration of parenthood (especially motherhood) and the pain of loss, while also remaining scary and having creative death scenes. I'm sure the game doesn't try to convey all the same symbolism but the gameplay looks solid.

I actually like that they made changes; it sets the DS incarnation apart from the other versions.  It also makes sense that they would tweak monsters because of the Augment system, but man does it result in some cheap deaths. XD

The game's graphics are very macabre. If you ever thought old NES games were never gory or at least beyond ESRB T, Sweet Home took it beyond. The enemies are just... yeah.

But that movie. Oh my god I love Sweet Home. I think I only watched it on YouTube. I love Juzo Itami's movies. I wish he wasn't just producer and actor, though. The boss fight at the end, though -- I made one of my friends watch it (out of context) because I thought it was one of the most epic battles in movie history and I liked the special effects (for its time).

Doing a quick search for "Phantasy Star 1" on deviant art this was near the top of the results.
(https://castlevaniadungeon.net/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffc07.deviantart.net%2Ffs71%2Fi%2F2011%2F313%2F9%2F8%2Fmedusa___phantasy_star_1_by_seijiwolf-d4ev7k6.jpg&hash=ec2c17e49c9938375433b73bd59ec515146d4df2)
(From: http://seijiwolf.deviantart.com/ (http://seijiwolf.deviantart.com/)) I like to think that if Odin had actually looked like that when you found him, the others would have teased him for the rest of the journey. (Or heck, even just looking like he actually does when you find him.) I can imagine many barely stifled snickers at "stone" and "snake" jokes during the course of that particular epic quest.

Let's be thankful no Belmont has wound up in such a conundrum. (That we know of.) God knows there's been enough opportunities.

Much as I enjoyed Phantasy Star I wish my US Master System had the higher quality sound-chip so I could have heard the game's soundtrack in its full glory when I played it. To illustrate-
Phantasy Star 1 - Japanese & EU/USA Version Music and Sound Comparison (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDPvSoiCAWg#)
The non-enhanced (US/EU) dungeon audio is a bit creepier but the FM version has an almost Castlevania like feel to it. And clearly that version of the soundtrack is better overall.

So is anyone else looking forward to the eventual release of DaggerXL as part of the XL Engine? Finally be able to a stable, bug-fixed version of The Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall for modern systems. xlengine.com/blog/ It's been inching towards Beta for what seems like forever. I'll be happy when it's done not only because I can then play Daggerfall (which has been released for free by Bethesda) but also so the developer can concentrate on his reverse engineered ports of One Unit Whole Blood and Star Wars: Dark Forces.

By the way does anyone have any good guides to modifying Morrowind? I've wanted to play it forever but 1. The unmodified combat is SO BAD. 2. I can't seem to get both a widescreen aspect ratio and adjust the UI to readable levels.

Hmm how to top that I wonder.

But in the mean time I found something really cool  I present to the dungeon

Digital Devil Monogatari: Megami Tensei ( the other parts are in the spoilers  :) please watch it )

some more info but here is what I want to point out

"Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei (Japanese: デジタル・デビル物語 女神転生 Hepburn: Dejitaru Debiru Sutōrī Megami Tensei?) is the first game of the popular Megami Tensei series of role-playing video games. It is based on the novel Digital Devil Story by Aya Nishitani. Although Atlus has published a majority of the series, the first two games were created by Atlus but published by Namco (known as Namcot at the time), after it bought the video game rights to the Japanese horror novel series by Aya Nishitani, the first named Digital Devil Story.[1] This game is a role-playing video game that features extensive dungeon crawling and focuses heavily on demons, which have gone on to become a trademark of the series"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Devil_Story:_Megami_Tensei (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Devil_Story:_Megami_Tensei)

It's a series of books and Atlus has not even tried to translate them WTF! I would buy this instantly  :o  I love me some books.

My favourite PS2 game.
It includes a love story, and in the middle of the game you have to decide if follow the girl or fight for your ideals.
And both stories really touched my heart.
Besides that, some great dramatic tracks on the soundtrack, very likeable characters, a beautiful world, good gameplay (especially when you start to customize it) and the most beautiful girl I've seen on a videogame (Ridley).
Although all of that can be only my personal taste, but it's an excellent game.
I'm still waiting for the sequel that will never arrive.

When it comes to smt wolf

look up my post from the last page that's the source of all smt  so yes it's with out a doubt a horror game the material goes straight into the satanic in some of the games (devil survivor from what I;ve played does not when compared to other in the  series), but a game like nocturne  is down your alley like a demon apocalypse from my understanding heck the cover for smtn(smtIII) is just pure red

skiped out on smt:n and persona 4 for dds 1/2 and devil summoner 2only because there were few left of dds1/2 and only one copy of dds 2 also got soul hackers and devil survivor for the ds as well as p3p, p2 for the ps3. right now dds1, dsr, p3p, and dds are at the top also reserved SMTIV and by the looks of it I'am to get the first print.

also here is the raidou battle

SMT: Nocturne Chronicle Edition - Hitoshura vs Raidou (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0X06bzRieE#)

who would I want to fight? Neither if I had the choice  :P

Sweet Home on the NES is the only one that comes to mind.

You know, I kept thinking, why reuse themes that were clearly composed for Dante when it's possible to take tracks from his own game? I mean come on, the battle theme from his game could've fit rather well.

SMT: Nocturne - Boss 05 "Dante" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jy3ufqp3l10#)

for smt fans in the later release for jp raidou kuzunoah is the one you fight.

Yeah, i heard of that game!
.....Dante??? In a RPG??? =o

Ok.. Btw, i wasn't talking about SMT, exactly.. I was refering to horror games, but in 2D graphics, like the ones for RPG Maker. Have you guys heard of it?

I dunno, but from what I've heard most horror games made with RPG Maker and the like play more like survival horror games rather than actual RPGs.

Yes! This!
Uhm, okay.. I'll show you a video of mine here if you don't mind.

It's not completely edited, though.. Whatever..
This game's called "Ao Oni". It's for RPGMaker as well. People who heard of RPGMaker horror games generally used to know about this. Well, i'm sure you guys know this now. :P

P.S.: It's a spoiler video. So don't tell anyone else, alright? :P

I'm still waiting for Y's 4 that was rumored to be out for the PSP Vita. That and I'm also patiently waiting for the English translation patch of Y's V. There's just no excuse for it to not be out now.

I liked a Summon Night game like 6 years ago, but now I don't remember which it was. It was for GBA, and the final boss music was awesome!

Oh yes! Wizardry: Labyrinth of Lost Souls, for the PS3, was in my opinion the most enjoyable title of the franchise, also featuring the best soundtrack.

Yup, Wizardy is very popular in Japan. Kojima even did some artwork for a short based on one of the games.

XX

Just got the remake of the first Persona. I'm really liking it so far. I'm now in the mall where everybody has afros for whatever reason. Also, the soundtrack is pretty bodacious.  :)

Ahh the first one I never played it  :-[ However I do have a lot of mst games devil survivor is one of the top at the moment but you know persona 4 is at top because...  :) And I will say this the first two persona games(well at least IS and EP from my understanding) are much more dark than p3/4. I just feel it, like the tone in music  for instance. Yet I will say out of all the persona mc's Tatsuya is perhaps my fav followed by yu.

Yeah I really dig the persona series heck, I dig SMT in general.

Dragon Age 3 sounds like it is going to be good, I played and completed the first game, did not care for the second. This one however is going to have a much larger scope it looks like. We will get to some gameplay of Dragon Age 3 hopefully at this E3.

I will start Time and Eternity one of these days. I was really looking forward to this game, but since it came out it seems that everyone gave it a low score.
Did anyone here play it?
