Title: Castlevania America
Post by: Azrael_End on January 14, 2008, 06:47:58 PM
Casltevania in America how should I put it......not that great you want to know why well. Japanese games like Final Fantisy and Dead or Alive do so well because they sponser their products on TV on the other hand I only had seen very little of Castlevania. I think some other reasions are the anime art style it so closely resembles. An other reason becuase it has to much envolve ment in the Japanese culture and many people dont like that.

Here are a few ways it could do better.
1. Have a stable storyline not some family tree..
2. Clothing desine from that time period it takes place.
3. Realism...No vampire hunter could do flips and kong fu moves lol. More realistic characters like Leon looking scruffyer with a gotee and long blond hair. Or less asian looking eyes. The whip is cool i would admit but....swords work better (Vampire killer could be a awsome mace...). Less of RPG style playing and more horror added to it. I mean like F.E.A.R scary.
4. Strong *** bosses!!! Bosses are strong yah but some of them are like...Come on you use that move every time! Death could be even harder and Dracula could at least regenerate health or something. Last boss should be the toughest right?
5. Horror Factor
Castlevania has its "Horror" if you mean in chessy. It almost never scares me just wierds me out. I want Castlevania to have things that make you want to crap in your pants. At least have stuff pop-up and stuff. F.E.A.R would be a great example for horror.
6. Religious Factor
Why would some one change the name of the bible to glamor..Heck i love the bible name for a sub-weapon..Vampires and most monsters in castlevania are of biblical refrence and should be used though out the game. I want to see a cross on the main characters sheild. I want to see a chaple with jesus in it.
7. Repition Factor
NO MORE REPEATING THE SAME GAME OVER AND OVER my gosh each one is the same with the same music...it gets boring after a while.
8. Game Factor
The game needs to be much longer with several diffrent endings and sides you can join...join Dracula or save the planet. Their needs to be blood not just from slashes..it needs to stay and the character should so sighs of cuts and bleeding for visusal refrence. Fear....should limit your battle skills...if you see a monster or skeleton depeding on how strong it is...it should scare you and make you slightly weaker.

I'm not quite following you here...
Are you saying Castlevania isn't doing very well in America, in terms of sales? Because it's actually more popular in america than anywhere else.

So you want castlevania to be a survival horror?

How many have you played? cuz just about everything you listed is in like every game, the only ones that have art that is aimed at a more anime look are the two ds titles, even the JP versions of the other games (even the early ones) have art that is very non-japanese. Unless you count the Kid dracula games but those aren't part of the main story. And Castlevania has always been an action game first and a horror game second. It doesn't aim just to scare people, the gameplay comes first which is why I've been a fan of it so long. Castlevania appeals to many genres, if they tried to make it a survival horror and only focus on 1 genre it would kill the series and be totally gay.

There's no horror really in cv, especially the kids oriented ds titles. Some unsettling things maybe (beezelbub or legion in their original game could go into the freaky category), but I don't think there was really something that would make the cv feel "scary." Especially recently when iga's been turning the 2d side of the series into a slapstick comedy wannabe (Both dos and por try too hard to be funny and fail miserably).

The enemies and bosses are still as dumb as if they were facing a retro Belmont, totally oblivious to the fact that the heroes possess all those moves like double/superjumps, sliding, backdash, whip dash, bat forms etc.

So no, not everything he mentioned is in the games. :P

Yeah but they have to make the bosses beatable and CoTM def. had smart bosses, there were no easy victories there. (unless you were obsessed with it like I was and wouldn't stop playing until you reached level 99) and in real life when to masters go at it, like take chess for example, it relies on the opponent making errors and moves that they did not forsee error in. If the comp. was perfect the games would be boring cuz you couldn't win.

I'm not speaking of making them that hard (outside of hard modes. That's where the opponents should become much smarter and deadlier, not just hit for 200+ damage), but of giving them moves that'd require the player to utilise his special moves to dodge the boss's attacks.

Imagine a boss sending a huge shockwave that covers the entire screen vertically. The only way to dodge it is to time Sotn Richter's whip dash so that the invincibility time it gives is enough to evade it.

As the bosses are now even cv1 simon could dodge them by simply walking away or past the boss. Proof: Play boss rush in hod as cv1 Simon. :P

They give you far too much time between attacks and the attacks themselves take too long to come out, so you see them coming from the beginning and can just casually walk away to safe zone.

Ah I see what your sayin' and I agree most of the games do this for some odd reason. (though it doesn't take any of the fun away for me) Only one's that don't are CV 64/LOD and CoTM. In CV 64/LOD dracula sends out all kinds of crazy moves in a complete circle with a varying radius depending on where you are, you have to know when to go in close and when to back off or he'll own you and even then you can still get hit if you get unlucky. In LOD the third form's even harder and it took me quite a few tries to pass it. CoTM also has one of the hardest Drac. fights ever requiring you to use your super jump move to get out of the way when he charges not to mention the constant green smoke he shoots out which you have to quickly use the super jump or jump back quickly to dodge.

I've never been that big on survival horror games (only one I've finished is Condemned damn that was an awesome game and RE4). I get bored when I've spent like 6 hours trying to figure something out or pass a part and can't do it cuz I messed something up or used up too much ammo earlier in the game.

OMG, shut up! Have you even played a castlevania game? You want to take away the things that make castlevania what it is! Your argument is pointless, unrealistic, and a lot of other things but i dont feel like listing them so i'll say etc. Yeah, that's all I guess.

The OC's views on what "Horror" is is basically just personal preference. CV's "Horror" because of it's themes, not because of it's suspense. Many modern day horror movies are still called "horror" despite the lack of any jumps, suspense or anything scary in general.

I don't really understand what this dude wants...I mean, aside from a completely different game. Castlevania is Castlevania and that is how it's always been and thats probably how it's always going to be. With so many gripes about these games, why are you even playing them and why are you even in this group??

So, yes, the game should be longer and yes it'd be nice to this and that, but the fact is, it doesn't and you should probably just stick to other games if you don't like whats being cooked up at Konami.

3. Realism...No vampire hunter could do flips and kong fu moves lol.

Maybe it's just me, but vampire hunters aren't very realistic to begin with....

The OP's point was moot. God of War is very UNREALISTIC with it's moves, yet it's an American game and is pretty damn popular.

Yeah but Simon is so badass his 2D CV1 sprite could easily take out any of the 3D bosses of CoD, not even kidding! ;D

Actully I have played several Castlevania games....
Curse of Darkness
Lament of the Inoccent
Dracula X Chronicals
The Orginal SoTN
Dracula X
Super Castlevania 4
Circle of the Moon
Simons Quest
Bloodlines
Arial of Sarrow
Dawn of Sarrow
Mind you I had never finished some of these games but have played them but I was just giving opinions since I live in a region where Castlevania isnt popular. But you have not right what so ever to call me out like some of you did. They where just opinions on a game that I enjoy but would like some change in. I can do that since I am American.

Yes and about the art style....I am happy they are bringing back the old gothic style but I was stating that people prefear the gothic style. Anime was only feature i belive in Ariel of Sarrow Dawn of Sarrow Dracula X any others i would not know.

I see what the OP is saying, but honestly, Castlevania isn't Final Fantasy or DoA. I don't even know what Dead Or Alive is, but I don't like Final Fantasy and I'm okay with Castlevania being not as popular as those are. It means less retarded fanboys of one single game and forsaking all the rest of them.

I do agree with you on the horror aspect. I don't think we need to turn CV into a survival horror (nor would I want that) but making the game a little more gruesome in places might be kinda cool.

Ariel of Sarrow

Are you serious? I mean, that's not even a mis-spelling, it's a completely new title!

Actually, Dracula X Chronicles uses the gothic style. The original Rondo of Blood used the anime style, as did Bloodlines. To some extent, so did the N64 games and CotM.

As for being called out, an opinion has every right to be challenged or argued. THAT is also what it means to be American.

To the opening comment - do you just NOT want CV to be CV? Whips aren't working?.....eeeeeumm.....that IS castlevania. Go play Devil May Cry if you want swords, because I say CV is nothing without its whips.

Exactly. I never get why everybody wants everything to be everything. You should play CV BECAUSE it's "Castlevania". There are so many other games out there to choose from if CV isn't doing it for you. It's not like there isn't survival horror games out there, or more realistic games out there.

While I do like Final Fantasy, people with that series are exactly the same. They want all these strange changes, espcially wanting it to convert to American-styled views. That alone is just pure wrong. Don't like Japanese games, play American games. Simple as that!

Dude, DMC is awesome. Just bought the three pack a few days ago. And about Ariel of Sarrow... sounds like a twisted spin-off of "The Little Mermaid"...

I totally agree with you!  Oh, I also think that they should put sharp barbed wire into every box of Captain Crunch instead of the actual cereal, since kids need to learn about how rough it is in the real world, instead of being treated to a rediculously great tasting breakfast.

...my point is everything you pointed out will never happen from a realistic standpoint...
