Title: Non-game Castlevania media you would like to see?
Post by: Nagumo on July 02, 2013, 01:33:30 PM
Castlevania has been adapted in other media besides game—gamebooks, novellas, comics/manga etc.—with varying amount of success. Personally, I think Castlevania has a lot of potential to also be succesful in other forms of media instead of only video games and nothing else.

What non-game Castlevania project would you like to see and why? Also, what would you like it to be about?

Personally, when considering a large part of Castlevania's appeal is the look of its world, a visual format such as an anime would seem like a natural choice to me. If it were to be a long running series, I would definitely choose to create an original story, but still keep it faithful to the aesthetics of the series. If it were say a series of about 12 - 24 episodes, I would do an adaptation of CV3's plot and the events surrounding it, elaborate on the characters, and overall give a detailed account of that period in the chronology. I would prefer this over adapting any other game since it would serve as a good introduction to the series, and I find other periods in the timeline to be hardly as interesting.

I would like to see more short-story Prologue mangas included with the games, typically drawn by Kojima. Like the ones she did for SotN & CoD. They add more details to the plot and are perfect opportunities to explore character motivations that wouldn't be revealed in the game otherwise. For instance, a prologue for HoD would've been cool, detailing Maxim's efforts that shows exactly how he became corrupted, Juste's training, etc. Stuff like that.

Cool thread, Nagumo :D

Me too, Pfil...I'd honestly like to see more Castlevania animation. I liked the intro movie in Dawn of Sorrow. :o

A big ass artbook.

Can't think of much besides that.

You bet the Blu-Ray Special Edition would be there from day 1!!!

Yeah! And the one from Portrait of Ruin is even better! (at least to me).
And you know what would be EVEN better? An anime with a 3D style of animation, like the cutscenes from Dead or Alive 5 for PS3, to name some recent HQ example of 3D animation.

I would love a castlevania anime!

I have no idea who made the DoS or PoR opening animations.
Anyway, I'm thinking that Aniplex or its subsidiary A1 Pictures can make the show. Production IG is also good.

Hmm, another good choice would be Madhouse. I think their visual style is absolutely gorgeous and very well suited for a series like Castlevania. They also did Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust and No Longer Human.

I'd like to see a Castlevania manga illustrated by Kojima. I love the ones she did for Sotn and Cod. Maybe a manga based on Aos. And a Castlevania anime would be awesome too.

For those of you who don't know who the guy is, he was the artists on the Tomb Of Dracula comic and one of the guys that created Blade.

It's sad when that happens. It happened to me once when I was looking for my favourite composers most recent works and I found out that Michael Kamen had recently died.

I'd love to see an anime (or CG) adaptation of the novel that takes place after DoS. The novel was great, but seeing battles is much better than just reading them. Also, a animated movie of the 1999 battle would be nice. It would give a lot of closure the fans of the old cannon and finally allow us to see what actually happened.

It would also be nice to have some manga or something regarding what happened to the Belmonts after SotN and why they couldn't touch the whip until 1999 (they never explained why).

A part of me wonders(and I can honestly say I thought of this) how cool it would've been if we got a sort of CV cartoon in the 90s. Not some of the more corny toons, but what if it was kinda a mixture of X-Men, Batman TAS and Exo-Squad(maybe toss in some Gargoyles for good measure). Something for the kids, but also had that mature feel to it.

Interestingly enough, I sorta thought up a strange setting. Pre-Demon Castle Wars modern era, dealing with (insert name here) Morris teaching the vampire slaying ropes to a young Julius Belmont, going around the world on adventures vaquishing monsters in different countries(sorta Mighty Max-esque), all the while, in Romania, Dracula's followers are preparing for his return and are trying to gather his forces from around the world. Maybe call them something like the "Council of Darkness" and have it lead by Death, and all the vampires in CV, among some others(revived Shaft) are members. That part of me from those years(90s) would've killed to see something like that.

It could a magnificent tragic story, like the end of the Star Wars prequels, when we knew everything was going to end in a pessimist, sad and tragic note, without hope.

Animation. Totally.

Comic books are alright with me too.

A movie would rock, but I have no faith in Hollywood doing it right. I think we'll have to settle for Van Hellsing as the closest we will ever get.

A big-budget Hollywood movie would essentially be Lords of Shadow, which I already view as "the game of the movie"

Can you imagine how horrible would it be to have "Castlevania: The Movie: The Game"?
Oh Dear Lord! That would be the end of the franchise!

A monthly American comic book series, adapting all of the games in chronological order.

Castlevania porno. If you don't think they can make a movie that will do the game justice, go all out and make one that will do the game injustice!

with a game that revolves around vampires and a whip, it shouldn't be too hard

There must be more than just one way to use the whip  ;)

Artbooks that I can afford. I'm a sucker for artbooks.

Yeah he was one of the best artists on Dr. Strange* to and illustrated the classic confrontation between them in the 1970s. He had a brilliant style that always gave such a sense of fluid motion, your eyes can't help but be drawn across the page by his linework.

*I'll just say it, he was better than Ditko and most others imo.

Colan would've been awesome. Alex Ross too, even if I'm not 100% convinced he'd be right for CV.

Comics aside, I'd love to have Castlevania novels released in the West. Kinda like that Metal Gear solid novel by Raymond Benson. Or what Blizzard's been doing with Diablo, Warcraft, and Starcraft. That way, Konami gets to expand on CV lore without having to pour their budget into a whole new game.

And yeah: another vote for an Advent Children/RE Degeneration-ish CG movie.  8)

I doubt that will happen. In the meantime, you might want to read my fan translation on the Ricordanza novel. (link at my signature)

Oh but I already have. Left me wanting more, and that's exactly why I wouldn't mind Western-audience CV novels.  8)

Oh thanks!

Well, we just have to wait for Konami to change their minds and offer us more stuff.
