Title: New mecha games
Post by: RichterB on July 22, 2013, 02:14:43 PM
It seems like mecha games have sort of hit a wall in recent years. I really liked Gundam 0079: Rise from the Ashes way back when, and Virtual-On: Oratorio Tangram on Dreamcast was A LOT of fun for an arena battler. The Zone of Enders series tried to make a campaign mode compelling in the 3rd person (though the up-and-down controls felt a bit sluggish compared to everything else in the game, and the story/characters weren't all that appealing). However, I just haven't seen this genre moving forward. A lot of what has released feels rushed, unbalanced, or generally uninspired. Or maybe it's just that the really good ones aren't localized? There's a pretty new book series called ARM X (www.ARMXOfficial.com (http://www.ARMXOfficial.com)) that has some absolutely INCREDIBLE battle scenarios (including a high-speed chase/battle between a weaponized train and a tank that can transform into a mecha). It's wrapped in a cool story too that I could see a lot of variety for gameplay--whether on foot or in mecha. It has a neat tiered system of mecha that would be well-suited to games with standard military mecha, military mecha mixed with alien tech, mecha inspired from the ground up by alien tech, and the actual alien mecha themselves. There's also fighter jets and other vehicles that support the mecha, which sometimes mecha games leave out. But anyway, I'd like to see some more imagination/variety like that in mecha games.

the only truly good mech games Ive ever played were the first 3 Armored Cores for ps1. Hands down the only ones I consider worth the time and Ive spent a lot of time designing a world and setting I could make my own mech game in. I really like the genre but its really died off in the last 10 years or so

+1, Its almost the same for me. If 2D counts, Metal Warriors for SNES is my first game based only in mechas, multiplayer in this game is awesome.

Metal Warriors 2 player versus multiplayer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNQ6Qf7krKI#)

I can even dare to say that this game is Armored Core precursor.

Good call, I've played some minutes of it in a emulator before, pretty good. But because I was only in a journey for knowing more games at the moment, I forgot about it.

Yeah, I meant to try the later Front Mission games, but haven't gotten around to it. You know what was good that I forgot to mention was Robotech: Battlecry for PS2. It had a good sense of control and speed with some varied and challenging scenarios.

We need a Mecha multiplayer game with online capabilities, a 2 VS 2 battle would be cool :P

At 16 years old this is far from a "new" game, but I'm currently playing an excellent and possibly "new-to-you" mech game. "Ghost in the Shell" for the PSX. The classic game room review hits all the highpoints except for the terrific soundtrack. The challenging 5 to 6 minute levels + a tough boss battle layout of the game gives me a wonderful old school, almost Castlevania like vibe. Definitely a sweet little gem for the system. Glad I got a copy before prices started getting higher about a year ago.
