Title: Castlevania games that you disliked at first and still dislike
Post by: Pfil on August 10, 2013, 12:37:23 AM
Just in order to follow the trend of topics and be popular  :P
Haha, no, I'm kidding!
I already know which games will appear here, Harmony of Despair on top of the list, I presume...
But anyway...
Which CV game you disliked from the first day and you can't still find some redeeming qualities?

The Gameboy titles. I still can't bring myself to like them. I will keep trying, though, I promise.

Harmony of Despair, Lament of Innocence, and Curse of Darkness.
Oh, and Final Fantasy VII (but that's not a CV).

Legends, Order of Shadows, Lords of Shadow, and Mirror of Fate.

Legends because it's way too easy. For example, being able to use invincibility during boss fights breaks the game in my opinion. Oh, and the levels are too long and boring. Adventure and Belmont's Revenge are better than Legends and I actually enjoyed both of them.

OoS because it's pretty bad, lol. But then again, what can you expect from a 6 year old cell phone game?

Lords of Shadow and Mirror of Fate for many reasons. I'm not saying the music is bad, but I just dislike style of music they chose for the LoS series, it just doesn't sound Castlevania like in my opinion. I'm also not a huge fan of the LoS/MoF story either, which makes a game hard to play if I don't like the story. The gameplay is alright in both games. I don't really have any complaints against the gameplay.

The Titan fights in LoS were also things that I disliked, but that's more of a minor gripe. Mirror of Fate was better than LoS in my opinion. I liked the gameplay better in MoF than LoS, but...with both games, it just feels like something is missing for me. MoF, while better than LoS, still wasn't a game I really cared for much. It just feels like that "Castlevania charm" is missing in both LoS and MoF. As standalone games, LoS and MoF are "okay" games, even though I'm not a fan of them. As Castlevania games, they just don't feel right to me. This is coming from someone who has played every Castlevania game except The Arcade and the Pachislot games, and have liked them all except the four games I've listed here.

On a side note, the only one I didn't hate, but didn't like either was Harmony of Despair. I was more neutral on it than anything.

@Kaori: I also played all CV games except 3 Pachislots and The Arcade, and I feel the exact same way as you in regards to LoS and MoF.

Oh, and Final Fantasy VII (but that's not a CV).
Hahaha!!! LOL!  ;D
I follow you!

The only thing I haven't emulated and most likely never will. They are the only games I will never play. The Adventure Rebirth in the other hand was amazing.

True this, tried so many times, still exclusively like the soundtracks

I'm not super fond of the gameboy games either, but I don't really hate them. Castlevania Adventure is pretty painful to play though. I can't be upset about it because it's so damn old, and I think it was a pretty decent entry in the series when it was new. Time has not been kind to it though, and for me it feels like work. Reeeeaaally slow work too.

Belmont's Revenge is often hailed as the highlight of the trilogy, but apart from the music (which is FANTASTIC) it's still a veeery slow game. And I am not digging the Mega Man approach to the levels either. I liked it more 15 years ago. I want a remake that fixes some of the issues.

The only game I've really disliked from the start was Mirror of Fate. It has great environments, nice graphics, but I'm just not having that much fun. I blame the combat, I think. I started playing Shinobi 3DS a while ago and DAMN! That game is fun. IMO. MoF should've been more like it.

Lords of Shadow obviously but also Judgement. some of Judgement's designs and charaters stories make me ask serious questions about what the writers and artist was thinking *Shakes head in shame*

In design, they were thinking about Death Note.

I've said this so many times before if any one has played shinobi 3ds they know which one is better. They have so many throwbacks it's just mind blowing not only that it's hard and heck you can even use the golden axe XD They even have a timeline of every single game in the series to get new fans into it this game has so much content that I say this is how MoF should of been. I remember when MoF came out I did a slight comparison to shinobi or at the very least referenced it and man MoF fails in all aspects even framerate  ;)

Harmony of Dissonance. I don't like the music and I hate the castle design.

Oh, and Final Fantasy VII (but that's not a CV).

I feel you there, 50 bored and frustrated hours of my life I'll never get back.

If I play them expecting Castlevania, LoS and MoF.

From the others... CVA, CV1 MSX version and PC version, CV64, CVLoD, Judgement, Order of Shadows (the worst CV ever)... these are the ones I dislike for any reason or another. I still play them, though, except for Order of Shadows, which I'll never play again.

Lament of Innocence, Castlevania Curse of Darkness and Judgement. These games made me believe Castlevania was not suited for 3D for awhile.

The most frustrating thing about Curse of Darkness is the ENORMOUS potential it had. Had the level design been good, it could've been excellent. I really like everything else about it (Music, combat etc). Well, the graphics are pretty damn depressing bur I can live with that. Shame on those level designers, boring me to death with their flat, loooong corridors. I can't even think about CoD cause the wasted potential upsets me too much...

I think another disappointing aspect about Curse of Darkness who how the Innocent Devils were mostly useless. You can play the entire without them -expect when the game forces you to use them- and it wouldn't have mattered. The game definitely would have been more interesting if they were essential in combat and the level design was based around their abilities.

What adds insult to injury is that there are some corridors, especially in the final area, that are needlessly long with NO ENEMIES whatsoever.

Sounds like a Simon's Quest homage to me... xD

Judgment, I really, really tried to like this game, the concept is great, but the controls are clunky and the AIs are overpowered.
If they worked and test played mechanics Judgement would have been a great game

I suppose its LoS, SOTN, CV3 or SCIV.

I thought about SCV4 because it seems to be the most untouchable game of the franchise in the opinion of the general fanbase, but I don't know...
Come on, Guy! Tell us!  :P
Title: Re: Castlevania games that you disliked at first and still dislike

It's proably CV4 or SotN and the reasons are probably personal ones, not something too objective.
Hence the fear.

I'm only spitballin' here though. :P

But you can tell us if you want.

You guys are pretty good. It is SC4. I beat it once and that was me forcing myself to finish it. I've tried replaying it several times but find myself getting bored very fast. After seeing how much it's loved here I said I'll keep this thought to myself ;D. I would put LoS but I've never actually played it

I think it's pretty unique and I really enjoyed it, but it's not one of my top 10 CV games either.
I mean: it's great, but there's plenty of CV games I like more than SCV4.
I just love them all!
But thanks for telling us!  :)

I never thought that CV4 was that good too. You shouldn't be afraid of telling your oppinion because most of the community likes a game or another.

Certainly hasn't stopped people from voicing it.
As long as people aren't acting like asses about it, opinions are welcome.

Dang here I was thinking SOTN I'm 50/50 on that "My mind is telling  me no but my body... my body is telling me YES..."

I can't give an answer here because I have never disliked a cv from the start  :P

oh wait corrected. It just popped in my mind cv 64 wow... such a mess vanilla  64 is.

now I want ala-mode

Bloodlines is inferior to SCV4 in every aspect except the music, but I like Bloodlines way, way more than SCV4.
Objectivity has nothing to do with personal tastes, and I always give more importance to what I personally like, and I really don't care about objectivity.
Gaming is a hobby, so enjoying it is everything that matters. That's why everyone should always put personal preferences first and really not pay much attention to the general opinion (or the critics, even less).

Curse of Darkness. Fucking horrid level design and dumb enemy AI get in the way of a game that otherwise has some addictive systems under the hood. I would love to see the weapon and demon forging in a new game that is not this one.

SCV4 is a game I like, but I never thought of it as highly as others do. To me, it's somewhat mediocre. Of course, I first played it a LONG time after it's release, so I don't have that early-90s nostalgia a kid would've had playing it for the first time and being amazed at the graphics and various gameplay mechanics(which I admit, would've been interesting to experience back in the day). I do like the bosses(the Zapf Bat, Puweyxil, and especially the whole Dancing Spectres battle with spinning background). I still think RoB's Bloody Tears rips all over SCV4's version. ;)

Never been a fan of Christopher or his game. Maybe rebirth is what it should have been but I haven't tried that one either. Something about that guys movement I never liked. The music was ok but that's the only compliment I'm prepared to give CVA.

I wonder if I'm the only one that prefers bloodlines soundtract over symphony since yamane did both really a first hit wonder  :)

Bloodlines is one of my favourites soundtracks ever. However, SotN, while not at the same level perhaps, it includes so many themes that there are more favourites in that one than in Bloodlines, where the tracks are few but there are almost all of them amongst my favourites.
My favourite soundtrack remains Portrait of Ruin, however. Not only CV, but all videogames soundtracks I know.
Curse of Darkness is the 2nd favourite.
Bloodlines is easily the best of older CV titles.

The funny thing is, my two least liked Castlevanias- Lords of Shadow and Harmony of Dissonance- were two that I had pretty high hopes for. And both managed to go beyond disappointing me, to making me outright hate them.
