Title: CVA have some good stages there, too bad the controls and framerate kills them
Post by: Maedhros on August 11, 2013, 12:17:40 AM
As the title implies. This title has two best uses of platforming on the series. The third and fourth stage for example. Too bad the controls are so bad, making them really tiresome without savestates or patient. I don't remember other CV with so much emphasys on platforming, except 3.

Just finished the game. I was bored.

Since I bought a copy the other day, I've been thinking the same thing. Though, I only really find the low framerate a problem during the horizontal-spike-wall sections, due to Chris walking so damn slow. I still love stage three, though.

Playing this game on an emulator helps Chris move just that much faster. But before I had the internet I was doing this on my Super gameboy. F**k was it difficult! And stage 3 was the most notorious monster of the whole game for me.

I really enjoy CVA for what it is.
And the music is so awesome!

I always enjoy playing the third and fourth stage of this game. I wish the atmosphere was a little better, then I probably would have enjoyed it more.

Yep. Love the music and graphics in this one but the sluggish controls just kill it.

It's a lot better with the walking speed hack. Also not loosing your whip power when you get hit helps a lot.

Eh, I couldn't enjoy that. Even though the game is broken because of those bad design decisions, fixing them would feel like cheating.

It's nice to improve the gameplay using several techniques, but my personal belief is that it's a nice experience to play it like the developers intended.
Then, we can stop if our skills ar not enough (it happened to me a lot of times), but at least I give it a try at first.
In the case of CVA, I could finish it without cheating. Some other times, like with Circle of the Moon arena stage, or some extra modes like Albus Mode in OoE, Max LV 1 in PoR, or The Forgotten One in LoI, I just couldn't do it.

OMG, I've forgotten again, thanks! I'll return playing my Albus save today xD

(mostly joking)
Maybe you guys should accept the game for what it is and accept that you're terrible at it. :P :P :P :P :P
C'mon, 'fixing' the walking is cheating.  Anticipate the problems the game has and work to beat it with those limitations.

Or, accept that "I am terrible at this game because I cannot adapt".  I will agree that the game could be better in terms of what's going on in the movement controls, but it's not like it's unplayable.  We have many people who've finished these games in their original state.

Kids these days... Get Off My Lawn!  :P :P :P

That's what I intended to say, kind of  :P
Sometimes I just can't do it, but at least try.
As you said, the game is not that unplayable.
I'm not an expert, and I could beat it without help.
Am I getting too old?  :P

That was an unexpected use of that sprite.

Haha! Men are like wine, the age improves them  ;)
You are young, anyway. But I tried to express that I'm starting to sound like my grandma, with complain to another (younger?) people, in this case, gamers.
Maybe I've been playing games for too long, because I started when I was like 6 years old.
But sometimes I feel that I am more a retro gamer or a veteran gamer than a young one... I don't know  :P
Is that good?

Sorry, couldn't resist xD
I bet you quoted Cristoph Waltz from the Django Unchained movie, am I right?
Beautiful quote, by the way!

Cristoph Waltz in one of the best actors currently in Hollywood, in my opinion.
His movies are always great and his characters always the best in each movie, so far.
That quote is from a key moment in Django Unchained.
Other great films featuring him in important roles are Inglourious Basterds, Carnage and Water for Elephants.

And there I am, again, derailing the thread... I swear it's not on purpose!  :P
If there existed some award like The Great Derailer (with PoR's train as icon), I would surely have it.

Dont even mention it, I do it all the time but its not on purpose too, its because I like to appreciate every little detail of a conversation, so it becomes less robotic.

I owned a hard copy of this and was so excited to have a CV game for my GameBoy that I was willing to overlook how slowly Chris walked. The funny part was that he JUMPED kinda fast considering how slowly he walked. I think this game has excellent level design though and it's be cool to see it remade and gussied up a bit!
