Nintendo 2DS

The newest member of the Nintendo 3DS family is designed specifically for anyone looking for a more affordable entry point into the world of Nintendo hand-held video games. Nintendo 2DS will be available in Red or Blue on Oct. 12 at a suggested retail price of $129.99.

Nintendo 2DS plays the entire library of packaged and downloadable games for Nintendo 3DS only in 2D. The system features a distinctive fixed, slate-type form factor, and optional carrying cases will be available in Red or Blue at launch at a suggested retail price of $12.99. Nintendo 2DS maintains many of the same hardware features as Nintendo 3DS: dual screens, game-play controls and touch-screen features. The system also has backward compatibility with the existing library of more than 2,000 Nintendo DS games, as well as access to wireless connectivity features like multiplayer online game play, fun Nintendo Video content and great digitally delivered games in the Nintendo eShop. To view a video of Nintendo 2DS, visit http://youtu.be/sAExBTWIp3M. (http://youtu.be/sAExBTWIp3M.)

People eager to test drive the new system will have the chance beginning in October, when Nintendo 2DS joins a sampling tour in conjunction with Simon Malls that visits several different markets before it wraps up on Nov. 3. It makes sense for younger children. One piece means no hinges to break, less top-heavy to hold, buttons higher up thus making for a better grip, and the 3D effect could potentially have damaging effects on children 6 or younger, I heard.

Nintendo has always been a toy manufacturer, and this here is the toy version of the 3DS. They make more money off parents with kids, so WTF do they care what 20- and 30-something Internet dweebs think about the design?

And since the screens are so close together it would make playing games such as Contra 4 a lot easier without the big gap in the middle.
Title: Re: Nintendo makes all of your worst Photoshop dreams come true
Post by: Abnormal Freak on August 28, 2013, 11:15:02 PM
I hadn't noticed that.

It could potentially be a detriment, however. If I remember right, Contra 4 actually uses the gap between screens as actual gameplay space. Sonic Rush, on the other hand, doesn't.

That could be a real problem, however we won't know for sure until someone actually tests out the theory *crosses fingers*

I've heard that it comes with a "sleep button" so these games that have some special functionality when you close a DS (like when you close it playing Castlevania and a sound can be heard) will still work as intended.

I only dont understand why its so large, they plan to add a extra battery in it or what?

I think it's brilliant move on Nintendo's part. It comes out at the same time as the new Pokemon, addresses a lot of parental concerns AND it's cheaper.

As for the 3D thing, there are a lot of long term studies that are not yet completed that are likely going to show that these artificial 3D effects are actually detrimental to everyone's vision. I mean think about it. You're literally forcing your eyes to focus in an unnatural way that causes an inconsistency between your eyes and your visual cortex. Yeah, that sounds real healthy.

Post by: Abnormal Freak on August 29, 2013, 12:40:11 AM
I don't know that 3D would ever be proven to damage eyesight. At most, 3D effects can strain the eyes and cause headaches. I don't think any permanent damage is being done, at least not to developed eyes.

Post by: Inccubus on August 29, 2013, 12:46:25 AM
Over the long term just normal displays can cause both eye strain and headaches and that most definitely is bad for your vision.
But like I said long term studies are ongoing and I'd personally prefer to err on the side of caution.

Honestly they should make the HDS, no 3D, but instead using the hardware to render at higher resolutions rather than a gimmicky 3d with shit framerates with quite a few games...

2DS, honestly should have kept the flip design since it doubles as great screen protection.

Contra 4 uses the gap as gameplay space, indeed. I just tested it. Also, once I played an Arkanoid game that used it. Sonic doesn't use it, I perfectly remember because it was so annoying. But Contra is difficult too. I don't see a way on which playing in 2 screens can be comfortable.

About the console, I don't see the point. Yes, many parents with little kids will buy this for sure, so from a marketing point I understand, but there's plenty of us, kid adults who play.
I want a 3DS with BIG screen.

It already exists. ;) The XL's screens are 90% bigger than the regular 3DS. Any bigger and you'd have a monster of a device to hold.

I think Nintendo may end up with the same fate as sega if they don't change their game plan. The way things are going I wouldn't mind that either. Zelda on playstation would be awesome.

Not going to happen. Also, you clearly haven't played their awesome 3DS games (Mario 3D Land, Luigi's Mansion, NSMB2) if you think they're not a serious developer anymore.

Not to mention you're talking about the only surviving dedicated game company left.

Don't forget the recent corporate shenanigans from Microsoft that Sony would have happily followed suit if not for the intense backlash. Is that really what we need? Corporate fear driven developers that put the gamer in the back seat and innovation in the trunk?

The Wii U may be struggling, but the sales numbers for 3DS are freakish. Nintendo is fine, and they've been through worse situations.

And most importantly, people seem to be bitching about having another choice available! Seriously? After the backlash against Microsoft for taking away peoples choices, we're really going to complain about being given a new option?

And Frances is hilarious, but I doubt that he actually feels that way about a handheld plainly intended to address parental concerns.

Adding to what Freak and Inccubus said, this is a really good move when it comes to parents with budgets.
It pretty much addresses any issues one may have:

"Hmm I need a gaming system for my kids.  Let's see..."
-Vita: expensive device that may be easy for kids to break
-3DS: medium priced device with pretty good game lineup, but is there anything that's not as pricey that does the same thing
-2DS: Cheapest, specifically dedicated to children who aren't meant to use the 3D effects until after 6yrs of age.

Parent just saved some money by getting a cheapo version of a system with a pretty good family-oriented lineup.
Nintendo continues to print money.
Kids are happy they get 'a' gaming handheld (at 3-10yr old, they don't really care or aren't really aware of the intricacies between systems... they just want to play fun games).

Notice I'm not saying the Vita is a bad system nor am I saying it is inferior to the 3DS.
What I am saying is, the 2DS is super-budget-friendly for that demographic.

I do not think Nintendo will go the way of Sega.  Certainly not because of a move like this move.

Definitely. When Boogie gives his opinions, he gives them as himself. His Francis persona is all for laughs. Why else would he crack an egg on his 3DS?

I wouldn't be surprised if Wind Waker HD will sell a lot of consoles, particularly with that limited edition bundle and a price drop. You're getting a console and a top-notch game for $300, and just in time for some seriously cool-looking exclusives coming out. The Wii U is struggling, but perhaps not for long. Even if it does, it's not going to put Nintendo out of the game. Their handhelds always do well. 3DS struggled at first but is doing a pretty awesome job these days, and the 2DS will undoubtedly sell well.

Remember that not only are there parents who will buy this stuff for their kids, but that there are also dedicated Nintendo collectors like this guy, who will snatch up everything.

Looks hideous, especially with that button placement and the inclined plane shape.

But I'm not the target audience and it's not like they're walling off a section of games compatibility, so whatevs.

What an idiot. That guy that treats his 3DS so badly and the smashes an egg in it...
It's really stupid when people break consoles to make videos.
There's some people in many countries all over the world that have to make sacrifices to buy a new console, and this arrogant assholes think that's funny?
I remember wanting SO BAD a PS3, and I had to wait like 5 years until we bought one with my brother.
And I'm not even poor, but in my country consoles and games have SUPER high prices, and shops take advantage of that because they all have kind of an arranged price.
And then I was watching videos in YouTube and I came across that when a guy buys and breaks a PS3 with a hammer... and I felt anger, and pain, because, deep down, that was a poor guy looking for attention.
Now I am lucky to have a 3DS, but I still understand how stupid this is.

If you watch boogie2988's videos where he's just being himself, he's one of the most articulate, humble, sincere, and caring individuals on all of YouTube. He's not the arrogant asshole you seem to think he is. He's made multiple videos on issues he had while growing up, one of which being that he didn't have a lot of luxuries growing up or in his young adult life.

However, for a laugh—sure, why not break an egg on his 3DS? The eggs aren't going to wreck the system; clean it off properly and there should be no problems.

Its like when AVGN first appeared in youtube, people took it seriously thinking "James = AVGN" and so they thought these critics were for real, totally losing the joke.

I will be honest, at first I thought this "Francis".was doing it for real too, since I never searched anything about him.

OK, I take back what I said about this particular person.
If you say he's humble and caring I believe you.

But this still stands for the one who broke his PS3 and that kind of people who breaks expensive things just for fun.

The AVGN also has destroyed several carts and even burned and shot (with an arrow) his SEGA 32-X. But I don't think he actually wrecks the original hardware, but instead, for show, makes fake casts of them then destroys those. It's less expensive that way.
Title: Re: Nintendo makes all of your worst Photoshop dreams come true

I love AVGN. Most games he breaks are donated copies of games that are easy and cheap to get, according to him.
For some expensive games, yes, he made copies. It's all for comic intentions.
AVGN really makes me laugh.

The video I referred to was one guy going to a shop, buying a PS3, going to the street and smashing it with a giant hammer. He was dressed like a pimp stereotype, or something like that.
And people looked at him and took photos, celebrating that

Too much work. He actually destroys that shit.

One obvious exception being the Nintendo World Championships carts. Neither are his to begin with, but even if they were, there's no way a serious nerd collector or anybody with any sense would destroy those, so replicas were made.

And it's one of the best episodes he's done, ha ha.

I know for sure (I've seem every AVGN video, even extras and bloopers) that he only destroys consoles that are already broken. Now about the cartridges, he uses some game that isnt rare and he received a lot of copies already (Top Gun for example) and then print a fake label to put in it.

Even for Nintendo World Champioship they've used a golden Legend of Zelda cartridge, not a real NWC. Yeah, these copies are from Pat, he was lucky since one of them came with a bunch of common games since the guy that sold it doesnt known his shit (IIRC it was a mother or girlfriend that sold it).

PS: Correct is "sold" or "selled"? I've remembered of that word, sold, only now lol

IIRC, NWC is like 50.000 on e-bay. There's no VG player in this world that would break that one.
I like to have original games when I can, but I'd sell it without thinking a second if I had one.
