Well that explains it all. In my opinion, Castlevania hasn't been in good hands since IGA.
http://www.vg247.com/2014/02/28/castlevania-lords-of-shadow-2-dev-discusses-troubled-development-blames-director-for-mediocre-game/ (http://www.vg247.com/2014/02/28/castlevania-lords-of-shadow-2-dev-discusses-troubled-development-blames-director-for-mediocre-game/)
The whole letter:
Well, I would like to shed some light over the development of this game... Working with Mercury Steam and I would like to tell this anonymously- is about an everyday frustration. Here's to every guy that has experienced hell during the development of this game, but especially to those who have led this to the mess that Lords of Shadows 2 is:
- Kojima had little to nothing to do with the development of the first game, he came by, set a seal, visited the studio, signed some things and that was it. He had even less to do with Mirror of Fate and LoS2.
The vast majority of this team is aware that the game we've done is a real piece of s*** that has nothing to do with the first one's quality and production values... Nobody is surprised by the low reviews we've got.
- If there's someone to blame here, that's Enric Álvarez. He is the person who has led a broken development based on his personal criteria, completely overlooking programmers, designers and artists. Despite his nice look to the press, often considered as some sort of creative "visionary" in the looks of David Cage and Molyneux, this guy has serious problems. He is a mean and naughty guy, and since the "success Lords of Shadows 1" his ego has grown to the point of not even daring to say 'hello' when you meet him in the hallway.
His distrust to his own workers is enormous. Most of the development team often found out features of the game through press news, rather than from the studio's head - unbelievable. And there is no corporate culture here at all... this is just a handful of people working blindly and at the disposal of an alleged visionary.
- Many of the studio founders are people with zero abilities for running a studio. Often here newbie developers know more than their own bosses. This structure only leads to a slow, messy and absurd development process, with the end result of Lords of Shadows 2 being a perfect example of what happens due to that.
- Absolutely every design idea has to be monitored, taken away and mutilated by Enric Álvarez. Several game designers have grown tired of this and have abandoned the studio.
- The art direction for this project has been erratic and beheaded. After Enric dismissed every idea and core decission from our main art director for the previous projects, he decided to just leave. It was a battle of egos unleashed by Enric (something that he has carried over with since his times in Rebel Act). Our now former art director is still working in Madrid, now with the Tequila guys making RIME.
- Many others have just turned to other studios offers, sick of the situation here. Almost every month we see fellow devs packing up and getting out of here looking for a new job abroad that's sad. It's amazing how the biggest AAA game developer in Spain is not even willing to make its workers a counteroffer. This company does not think highly of its talented workers and their good work. There has never been any kind of salary bonus or anything that remotely resembles it. Not even a single "Good job team!" acknowledgement.
- The production management for this project has been terrible, way often the heads of each department dismissed every production deadline and imposed their own criteria. As a result, the development was delayed for six months, and that investment only came out of MercurySteam's pockets. The QA department is treated like cattle, with shameful wages and almost everyday bullying.
- After completing Lords of Shadows 2 MercurySteam has fired 35 workers, and it's embarrasing that no website or journalist is talking about that. More firings are expected to come in the following days.
What does Castlevania community think? Maybe From Software would make better Castlevania games, though I dunno, Konami only treats MGS properly (well Kojima started the golden age of MGS, and still involved, which is why MGS still has some integrity, whereas Castlevania has suffered the outsourcing that DMC went through with that lame company, Ninja Theory. ) Who knows what that company would do to Contra in its current state and with the wrong people making decisions.

Woow Affinity, it's been a long time.
And the story originated here, I posted it on neogaf, and VG247 picked it so, Internet --- > Dungeon ----> Neogaf ---> Internet --- > Dungeon
-
Maybe it's the same case as IGA's situation, I will not be surprised considered how rushed his CV games was but he's not allowed to let it out in public since he's still working with Konami with other projects otherwise he will get fired for sure.
-
Hopefully Mercurysteam will fall apart completely before they can get their hands on anymore of our beloved classics. And from the sounds of things that just might be the case. I prey this letter gets circulated so much around the net that this egomaniacal leader of MS is brought down with his monster.

uhh yeah, people should lose jobs because of bad management out of their control, sure

How long have I been saying that?

Like I said in the other thread, all of that is rather typical of any game development company. Its the rarer thing for game development to go smoothly and everyone in the chain of command to be on the same page than not. There are lots of ideas left on the chopping block that could have or would have been if not for the seemingly arbitrary veto of a department head or in this case one power hungry individual.
At the very least I am quite please that in spite of all of the office politics that completely nailed the games combat and managed to improve it a considerable amount from the first game. You can definitely tell the plot of the game suffered from this though, the villains were too shallow, and Victor Belmonts inclusion into the game so brief you have to wonder why he's even there not to mention the way the ending was changed because Konami didn't the original and I can't blame them it was awful.
-
The plot thickens.
28/02/ UPDATE - Spanish website "Vadejuegos" confirmed with their own sources if the info posted here was true. Their results next:
- Vadejuegos is in position of confirming the story and clarifying some aspects of it.
- Development of Casltevania was very problematic due to leadership and communication problems.
- "Development problems are basically what was posted online".
- "In the end, the lead end up being the person who has been here for the most time or laughs the most at Alvarez' jokes"
- "Being creative there is complicated. People's ideas don't get anywhere. Rafael Jimenez, art director got tired of that and ended up in Tequila. They had him hand tied. He said "Well, here you remain with your brilliant ideas"".
- "Jimenez did the first game's art which was awesome, and (thanks to his departure) this second one is a Frankenstein. There is a power struggle. Some parts are pretty, some aren't".
- "This Castlevania ended up being a little weird due to that. Each department goes with itself and there is no internal communication".
- "They mistreat their people. They.. distrust themselves. It's a very weird ambient, very little creative"
- Relating the stealth sections: "Some of us said, "But what is this? Are we really doing this? Why rats? Really?". Those things were bad and talked between us. This has been like this for 2 years, not before.
- "There weren't any meetings. We found out things llots of times by the press".
- Regarding the first post veracity: "It's not true (that I know of) that Konami is displeased with the game. That can't be known yet".
- "The delay didn't involve out pocket's money (that we know of) it was the normal thing caused by a production of this size.
- Alvarez has been contacted.

Yeah, this is what happens in AAA game dev. Cox even publicly said MoF was done so they wouldn't have to lay off a lot of people between LoS1 and 2. It's a pretty normal thing in the industry right now.

I like how people on here tried to justify rats so hard and yet even MercurySteam was all 'this is fucking stupid'
-
uhh yeah, people should lose jobs because of bad management out of their control, sure
Isn't this pretty much almost ALWAYS the case?
That said, I still sort of hope for it. Not in that, "Hah, people are losing jobs" but in more of the they can probably get up and do something else, like their own indie studio or just gather up the ones that they think are good and do their own thing.
And I'm glad that there are chances for these things. While, an anonymous person saying this doesn't really mean as much as a named person, it speaks loads when someone wants to talk about how bad it's been, in any industry, because of management/investors/bussinessmen.

I don't think the development staff would mind given their diabolical leader's state of mind. Even if I were a member of such a team I wouldn't care which one comes first; 'fire me' or 'I quit'. it doesn't matter with such an egotistical douche at the helm. Those people would be more happy doing what they love at other venues of emplyment rather then sticking with Mercurysteam's Dr. Evil.

Not uncommon but depressing as crap to read. Guess this means no more LoS save DLC, huh?
-
I don't understand the hate. I think Lords of Shadow 2 is an awesome game! It's a mixture of Castlevania, The Legend of Zelda, Darksiders, Legacy of Kain, Soul Reaver, the Batman Arkham games, etc.
-

The DLC might not be coming from MS.
And LOS might continue under a different team if Konami decides to stick to that timeline.

Konami supposedly expressed interest in continuing the LoS canon. If LoS2 doesn't bomb hard sales-wise, that interest may remain.
Hell, it may continue that way either way. LoS2 aside, LoS1 is still the highest selling Castlevania ever.

To be fair, LoS1 got a budget, something IGA never did. Furthermore, it got more marketing than I have ever seen the series get. It doesn't seem surprising to see something that had money pooled into it make money. IGA tried to make dinner out of table scraps, but MS was given cuisine to start with in comparison.

Until I see someone prove to me IGA got table scraps, I'm going to go with his own word that he got at least reasonable budgets.
Likewise, LoS was already said to be made on a small budget. Obviously handheld budgets are naturally going to be smaller than console ones, so a small 360/PS3 budget is going to be larger than a small DS budget, but I still think the money talk is largely irrelevant, especially considering that depending on how sales go, LoS2 may definitely prove that budget =/= sales.
LoS was a good game. It sold well because people liked it. I stand by what I said.
-
That's very sad. LoS2 could have been a really amazing game. It is good, but not perfect.

Wouldn't want it to if it mucks up the story MS laid down. I suppose it would like that MGS. Raiden game but with Alucards.
-
I would love a game that builds off of Gabriel Belmont being Dracula and just pretended LoS2 didn't exist. Mercury Steam fucked up their story all on their own and I'd love a redo that went somewhere else.

Oh, please. Compared to Iga's games the LoS 2's story is like Shakespeare.

IIRC, LoS cost Konami less than Iga's games for two reasons:
Because the Japanese devs were paid higher for their work compared to those in Spain, and because Mercury Steam paid half the development cost themselves.
So it's less "if Iga had the budget", rather "if Iga had a team who'd work for half the cost and was still comprised of top class artists and programmers"
Manpower is probably the metric that would solve such an argument best. Compare how many worked on each game, etc.

well to be fair, despite how controversial this all may seem, the bottom line is its all hearsay. we cant say for sure if what this guy says about Enric/MercurySteam 100% true, 50% exaggeration, etc. we just dont know.

Of course we don't know. But there still are far more considerate (and credible) ways to react to one of your own developers' complaints. What a world we live in, eh?

The forced stealth segments were stupid. The idea of turning into a swarm of rats however, was not stupid, despite it's poor implementation.
I don't know why they couldn't just make it one of your subweapons. Turn into a pack of rats whenever. When you do, enemies lose their aggro on you, because they dont know where you went.
Instead of making it "you can only do it in these parts here"

In no FUCKING WAY.

Oh, please. Compared to Iga's games the LoS 2's story is like Shakespeare.
Really? REALLY?! Iga's game's stories aren't that great, but LoS' story is just as bad, if not worst. Playing through it right now, and it's... ... hmm... The game is playable. But there are so many gripes I'll get into later. But back onto story, it's a POS so far. I'm about to meet Carmilla so I probably have a bit of a ways to go. The story is literally a fantasy version of a teenage boy, his retarded tsundere son or little brother and CRAZY, abusive, clingy girlfriend., bothering him, while he's trying to buy an illegal gun to shoot himself in the face so that he won't have to listen to them anymore.
-
I have to agree with saying that, compared to the iga games, lords of shadow series is better in the story department.
Boiling the story down to such labels will, naturally, make it seem petty and insignificant. Lords of shadow 2 starts off with Gabriel wanting to die, unwilling to continue his wrath against humanity since his son will come to fight him. Not wishing to fight his son or blood, he went into seclusion. Now, with satan coming back, he has a chance to die but, over the course of the story, he realizes that he cannot just selfishly run from the past.
The entire castle segments are in a pocket dimension. The blood and carmilla represent the evil inside of him, with carmilla likely related to the fact that it was Laura who turned Gabriel. Marie and Trevor represent Gabriel's lingering remnants of humanity and, over the course of the game, they help to convince him that he had gone astray from his original cause and get him back on course.
Is victor underused? Yes. But the story is pretty good. Not great or revolutionary, but still pretty good. Same level as 1 and mirror of fate.
-
I have to disagree entirely with LoS's story being better than the original canon or IGA's games.
The most crucial moment, Dracula's birth, wasn't even included in the original LoS. It was only seen in DLC. There are too many moments in the whole series that are just kind of "what" that you need to just nod your head and accept it for what it is. The whole thing feels forced and it kind of makes me believe even more LoS was never meant to be about Dracula or Castlevania when they first started it.
From what I understand Enric was the main writer for the LoS series. He's awful, like, mediocre comic book writer awful.
Granted, Castlevania always had a super silly plot but the games did their damn best to adhere to what the series plot is all about; Dracula and devil's castle coming back every 100 years with a family of vampire hunters or solo hunters affiliated with the Belmonts in some way that must stop him.
LoS is just kind of all over the place, they aimed to make a tragedy more than anything, and sometimes it came off as a forced tragedy, and then there's the inclusion of all these weird mystical/magic items you'd love to know more about but they never really explain any of it or what their purpose is.
Examples? The God and Devil Mask you spent all of LoS searching for that they just dropped and never mentioned in MoF or LoS2. I still do not understand their significance at all. If they did do something then they did a horrible job communicating it or even showing their purpose.
-
Thing is, from what I've heard, mercury steam wanted to include the transformation in game, but had to make it dlc due to pressure from konami.
And besides that, at least how I feel, the classic plot just became...stale. It didn't try enough.
-
LoS2 had everything for being the best game in the series, from all fronts. And they fucked that up. Mirror of Fate holds the best story in a Castlevania ever, and that's sad.
-
LOS1 had a pretty straight forward plot until losing it's edge right at the end.
MoF's plot was pretty basic, yet very predictable.
LOS2 felt like, they(and by they I mean Alvarez) looked and said "Ok, we have Dracula in modern times. Now what?" And the discussion went on for two years until decide to put everything in a blender, forget about the lid and ask questions later. The result was a messy plot that went downhill an hour into the beginning of the game and never recovered.
Out of all the LOS games, MoF had the better plot but not by much.

I think this sums up Lord's story pretty accurately to be honest. I blame Satan. The guy just ruins everything.
As for MoF: I found it on par with most of IGA's storylines: as you said, basic plot with predictable twists. The presentation was just arguably better, as is most of the Lord's storyline compared to IGA's.

The God's Mask lets the wielder see with the eyes of God. Zobek tricked Gabriel into telling him it would bring Marie back (that's the whole premise for his quest)
The Devil's Mask allows the user to be controlled. this was shoehorned into the end of the game and explained how Marie had actually died.
Mirror of Fate holds the best story in a Castlevania ever, and that's sad.

Let me guess, google it if I don't get it.
