Title: Best jRPGs
Post by: Ratty on March 29, 2014, 05:12:32 PM
So, what are your favorite games in the genre?

I recently (finally) finished Chrono Trigger after a few months hiatus right before the final boss. (I just needed to do some grinding and hadn't felt like it.) And now I'm considering playing Chrono Cross or some other game in the genre soon. I need to go back and play Valkyrie Profile, which I had false starts on twice now, and I've been meaning to play Phantasy Star II and Final Fantasy tactics for some time now. Final Fantasy 6 and 9 are some of my favorite games ever, and Chrono Trigger is an amazing game I fully plan to replay sometime. But I just have trouble keeping my attention on one game for more than 14 or 15 hours at a stretch. What about you?

Xenogears is my favorite game of all time, but I also love the first ten Final Fantasy games as much as someone can love a video game (6 and 9 are my favorites, though).
Chrono Trigger ranks pretty high for me.
I'm a fan of Xenoblade as well, so I have high hopes for "X" on the Wii U - despite Nintendo & Monolith Soft being so secretive with it.
I have a limited knowledge of the Tales Of series, but the games I've beaten from it, I've enjoyed enough to mention.

Paper Mario is and forever will be my favorite in the genre. Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne is probably number two.

You reminded me - I completely forgot about Paper Mario & SMT! I loved The Thousand Year Door & Persona 3 & 4.

Xenogears, Chrono Trigger-Chrono-Cross-Radical-Dreamers, Parasite Eve, Vagrant Story, Legend of Dragoon

its almost as if no matter who u ask, your always gonna get the same answers: the top RPGs ever will always be rotated between chrono trigger, xenogears, one of the FFs (typically 6), etc.

same if you ask someone what are the best castlevania games, the answer is always gonna be either cv3, symphony, rondo, super castlevania 4

I can remember asking my Bro about some of the FF games he liked. He told me that FF-X killed it for him. As he was finishing the game and seeing the ending his reaction was; "WTF!" And he has no intentions to try any of the later ones, especially the FF-XIII trilogy. He feels that Lightning is one of the worst characters to come out of FF. And it doesn't help the fact that there are rumors of the creator having some sort of obsessive compulsion with the character Lightning and even calling his wife by that name rather then by her real name. Sounds like the guy needs to get out more, lol. Although my Bro does enjoy FF-XIV: A realm Reborn as it's more a kin to the earlier FF games which he likes. And he also gets a laugh out of all the cat people in the game. Here's a quote from one of the players; "We need to go N'yaow! Right N'yaow!" LOL!!

Me personally in terms of FF, I liked the series all the way up to 6. After that they weren't FF games anymore. Although FF 9 went back to what they once were, especially the battle system so I can't see this one as a bad game. It just got ridiculous with all the grinding alone with the boss under the world tree-esque dungeon. Couldn't kill that son-of-a-b***h no-matter how much I grinded..! Oh well... That's what game shark is for.

On to other JRPG's Chrono Trigger was a good one, though I've never finished it. And considering how many different endings there are I'm not sure if I will ever get around to completing it. I own two Ocean Star games for the PSP that were originally from the Super Famicom. There almost like play episodes of Star Trek in a fantasy world so that kind drew me in  ;D

I also own all the Valkyrie Profile games but like Chrono Trigger I've never finished them. The first game has that damned clock and you need to finish the game within the time limit in order to get the best ending. This in my mind is a 'WTF' moment. You don't put in a time limit in an RPG. It just doesn't work well IMO. VP2 was better as you weren't under pressure form some stupid clock so I could play the game at my own pace which is how RPGs should be played. VP 3: Covenant of the Plume gameplay is more overhead oriented (kinda like Brandish 4). I also own the whole original Phantasy Star series for my PS3 Genesis collection. Had to buy a second controller in order to unlock the first PS game (WTF?, lol). Aside from Lunar: Silver Star Harmony I also have CrowLancer. I guess I might as well put Dragon's Crown in the list too. I do own a physical SNES cart of Brandish and I've recently finished Brandish 2: The Planet Buster thanks to a fan translation patch. Would the Y's series be considered a JRPG? Oh well, it's in the list now.

Well, while i like almost every FF game, i started to dislike them after FF XII came out. For me my most liked are FF IV, FF VI, FF VIII and FF X. Now about Chrono Trigger, you should really finish it, one of the best RPG games in gaming history. Now, about Valkyrie games, the first one, while it has a clock time(periods)like system, to really enjoy it, you should play it on hard mode. More time, more characters and more dungeons to explore. about the good ending, time has nothing to do, other factors are the key for obtaining the best ending. The second one is really good and favorite to me, along with the first one, but 3 is just mediocre for me.

Does Fire Emblem Awakening count as a "jRPG"? or is it a "jStrategy"?
'cuz no matter what the answer, it's such an awesome game.

I've put 300 hours into it.  I'm so insane about it.

A forum dedicated to a Konami franchise and no one mentions Suikoden? For shame. Suikoden 2 is my favorite jrpg by far.

Yeah same here. I have the Fire Emblem 3DS which came with the game pre installed so I always have it with me.

That's because I was not here(so how about vandal hearts?) but seriously all of you have disappointed me  :P   ;)

I read everything and not one of you mention this?

Dragon Warrior (NES) Music - Battle Theme With Intro (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JMga6n9BW7M#)

For shame, for shame...  ;)

That's debatable don't you think?  I've play a lot of rpgs to say that's not true. From valkyrie profile, to star ocean, tales, SMT, Lunar, suikoden, fire emblem, dragoin warrior, hell I even got air's adventure that's saying alot. and there's a whole lot more

Also bloodlines and belmont's revenge are awesome  :P

Aside from Lunar: Silver Star Harmony I also have CrowLancer.

I hate the psp version I had to get the ps1 version for my birthday and don't you mean growlanser?

Also here's some I have not seen listed

From what I've read on multiple walkthroughs cutting down on game time (the clock) is part of getting the best ending. I may have read them wrong but that's what was mentioned. I'll have to check again since it's been several years.

Panzer Dragoon Saga - one of the best video games I've played, and one of the most interesting JRPGs so far. It takes about 15 hours to beat, but the English ver. CDs cost like HELL. And... even if they would kill me for this epic crime, I would still play it on my SS emulator. :D I mean it's a great game.

Septerra Core is actually a western game, but it's JRPG, it's long and it's good.

The Desolate Hope is a mix between a platformer and JRPG. I wouldn't recommend this game to anyone because of its "experimental" nature, but it's one of my favorites. Really hard beautiful game.

Radia Senki Reimei Hen is TECMO's great JRPG on NES, which is also one of the best.

Samurai Spirits RPG. If you love Samurai Shodown series and can read Japanese - it's a must.

Breath of Fire 3 is my favorite and it had an excellent re-release on the PSP with an updated UI looked great. Only it never came to the US so I had to import the PAL UMD Disc.

And since Sony refuses to release the cable that lets you transfer UMD games in a PSP to a Memory Stick in the Vita, and they refuse to put the game on PSN, I basically keep my old PSP around just to play that.

I am also a fan of Wild Arms, and hope to see another installment in the series one day.

At first, I absolutely hated any kind of RPG.  I don't really know why...I didn't like the turn taking style, and I also hated random battles.  I wanted to at least see the enemies so I could try to avoid them.

Then a friend introduced me to Chrono Cross.  You could see the enemies, and for that I was glad.  However, aside from that, something about this game...I just loved it!  When my friend was tired, I made him let me start a new game and I played all night.  I didn't get far though.

Soon after, that friend introduced me to Earthbound, which I loved.  When I went to college, a girlfriend found out I liked Chrono Cross and introduced me to Chrono Trigger.  Somewhere in all this, I found a new love for RPG style games...but I'd have to say those three are the top for me.  You all have listed lots of other good ones!

Well 1 and 2 are on PSN, unfortunately XSEED has said that they cannot put 3, 4, or 5 on PSN as PS2 Classics because of problems with the way the games are coded.

I would try to find a copy of Wild Arms: Alter Code F, its a PS2 remake of Wild Arms 1 with additional playable characters.

I still say that the Chrono Cross "Elements" system, combined with the GORGEOUS visuals (and detailed character models), plus Yasunori Mitsuda's amazing soundtrack, are the reasons that game is a total Gem.  Too bad it's constantly overshadowed by Chrono Trigger (which is ALSO a great title).

This tune still brings tears to my eyes:

You need to do some specific actions in three specific chapters, that they wiil make you drop Valkyrie's seal value lower than 35, to trigger the sequences for A ending. If i didn't have read a walkthrough, i would have never found out that for my self.

IMO... Wild Arms 2 is the best. I couldn't get into any of the others. 1 was okay but I got stuck in the desert or something and I just gave up on it.

Breath of Fire 3 was also my favorite. 4 was pretty awesome as well. I got into the series at 3 so I can't go back to the older ones.

None of them are on the level as Xenogears and Valkyrie Profile for me though.

That's how my girlfriend at the time came to introduce me to Chrono Trigger.  I had recently bought the soundtrack to Chrono Cross, and one afternoon while we were studying (yeah, we were really studying this time) I was playing the 3rd disc.  She apparently grew up on Chrono Trigger (though never told me she liked games, what's up with that?!), and wigged out a little when she heard the familiar tune!

Breath of fire III is the best of the series for me. Breath of fire IV is also very nice, but like VladCT said, you'll have to make it a little far to the game for it to start getting interesting and yes Fou-Lu is one of my favorite vilains. Also Breath of fire II and I are also great games and  you can play their remakes on GBA.

Dark Souls isn't so much insanely difficult as many people say. It's just very unforgiving. Dark Souls 2 is just plain trollish.

I got into the Megami Tensei franchise with a six-month run of a bunch of the games and it's still something I think about pretty much all the time. I bought Persona 2: Innocent Sin years ago out of curiosity, then Nocturne caught my eye, then Persona 4 real-time commentaries had me excited for that, then I played Strange Journey alongside two other people, and so on.

Nocturne, Digital Devil Saga 1+2, and Strange Journey are my favorites, I think.

I adore Strange Journey so much. I remember being floored by how merciless that game could be; the final boss still haunts my dreams. As for DDS... well I loved 2. The first one rubbed me the wrong way in a lot of ways though. I know they're supposed to be played together to experience the story, but the ending of the first game was almost catastrophically dumb. I remember fighting a big bird demon thing as a boss, intro cutscene and special music and all, only to find it was relegated to a random enemy encounter chance in the very next room. The whole end game escalation seemed off. But 2 was great, it fixed up a lot of my issues with the game and I really dug Roland to keep things fresh in the roster.

If you have a 3DS, I highly recommend SMT IV. Its quite excellent and makes up the SMT Holy Trinity of Nocturne, IV and SJ.

It's kinda hilarious that Intelligent Systems re-released Advance Wars GBA... for Wii-U!

I also recently found out that Fire Emblem: Awakening was going to be their last Fire Emblem game for good.  Their Fire Emblem sales had started to decline since Radiant Dawn, so this was gonna be their 'going out in a blaze* of glory' title.  And, hilariously, the title ended up being a Smash hit.

Fire Emblem: Awakening is basically Intelligent Systems's version of Squaresoft's Final Fantasy game (Final Fantasy for NES was also Squaresoft's 'last game' since they were not doing to well at the time, but the game turned out to be a hit, so it kept them going and resuscitated the company).

I'm hoping that success leads to the okay to make a new AW. From what I've heard they've wanted to make one it just hasn't been in the cards, but if they can turn FE around from a gradual decline, there's hope they can bring AW back to a level of success.

And on another note, I would say I'm excited for Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem... if we knew anything about it. Why do you taunt me so, Atlus/IS?

I'm heavily interested in that.  I'm hoping it takes on that "Outrealm Gate" aspect that FE:A has, as the means for the crossover to happen.

If there's another AW game I'd like them to re-release, it'd be Days of Ruin. The story was darker and edgier done right.
The audio, however, must be remastered. The soundtrack was kickass, but the compression was UNACCEPTABLE! I mean seriously, it sounds like it was in freaking 32kbps or something. To be honest, I think they'd be better off using synths instead of trying to cram CD-quality music into a card.

I loved Shining Force. I have Sword of Hajya on my 3DS.

Oh and about Suikoden II it looks like the game is finally going to be released on PSN. It had an ESRB rating update.
