Title: It's the little things...
Post by: theANdROId on April 06, 2014, 11:50:49 AM
Seeing a question and answer in the Trivia (http://castlevaniadungeon.net/forums/index.php/topic,6847.0.html) topic reminded me of some of the "little" details in Castlevania games -- though they're not really important, or maybe not even necessary for the plot of the game -- they just add to the greatness of the games!  Things like:

- The fact that the clock in SotN chimes 13 times
- The life of the bird that nests under the Outer Wall in SotN

There are tons to name I'm sure.  What are some of your favorite "little things"?

the confessional in symphony
the "warp room" in haunted castle
all the throwbacks/easter eggs from the classics that are in harmony
the changing weather patterns in symphony
the "load rooms" in all the metroidvanias (sans harmony & circle)
the paintings in lament
maxim's Stellar Sword in portrait
changing into cat form in ecclesia, then watching all the cat demons follow you around

just to name a few

The pooping ghost in PoR

Seeing the details change between the two castles in HoD, like the bloody decapitated statue in Entrance B and the angel statues growing demonic wings and facing away from the cross they're carrying in Sky Walkway B.

Seeing the bust of Dracula at the top of the pile of junk in Hammer's shop in Dawn of Sorrow.

The realistic portrait of Mathias in the throne room in Dawn's Julius mode.

The "Power of Sire" item in SotN creating a brief image of a medieval woodcut of Vlad Dracula when used.

The names of locations in Simon's Quest referencing real places and/or people connected to the Dracula mythos. "Vrad Cemetary," "Brams Mansion," etc.

The accurate birth and death dates for Dracula listed on the tombstone at the end of Simon's Quest.

The somewhat accurate depiction of demons from the Goetia, such as "Buer" appearing as a lion's head in a wheel formation in AoS.

The appearance of impaled corpses here and there decorating the Castle in various CV games, notably the N64 games, and the prevalence of traps intended to impale you in the last two stages of CV Adventure.

And this one, I have no way of confirming as to whether or not it was on purpose, but, the name "Simon" was the name of the protagonist who destroys Dracula in the 1970 Hammer Studios film "Scars of Dracula."

dracula watching in the background in rondo

IGA thought that this was Dracula too, but it was only a guesstimate on his part when asked the question. I took a good look at this in a blown up image of the original Rondo game. Turns out it's not Dracula at all but a broken piece of wooden scaffolding with a cloth piece attached to it.

persephone's actions when you use the vacuum on her
wall meat

Oh lawd, I've heard it called many things but this is a first  :D

Also,

- CVII's Dracula being modeled after Count Magnus Lee's first dramatic appearance in Vampire Hunter D
- Seeing Nosferatu frozen in ice in Castlevania Chronicles
- Richter slamming his hand on Simon's map of Castlevania in Rondo's opening
- Seeing areas from both CV1 and SCIV in Chronicles

The likeness off the goddess on the stained glass window that blows out revealing the moon behind it in chronicles.

The "harpie" (that looks like lucifer) that enters the room before revealing itself as Dracula in haunted castle.

The symbolism throughout the entire game in LOI.

Death and how they never manage to screw him up no matter how bad the game is.

The way they just say "to go north" in Simons quest. Being afraid to mention the place by name was just great.

I could easily echo many of the same things others have mentioned!

- In relation to foods, one of the little things I like is how you have to catch the peanut in SotN!
- In the 64 games, I like that they included the statue of Mary crying teardrops of blood...that then becomes an enemy!
- The brief reference to the CV bat, that is eaten by Balore in AoS
- Many of the background details mentioned, such as the corpses on pikes, rats in the ceiling in SotN, and prisoners rattling their cell bars.
- The storm blowing the curtains and rattling the windows (I'm pretty sure in the start of SotN, and maybe in another game too?)
- "Puzzle" type sequences, such as:
- - a few in HoD where you beat the giant knights backwards into stuff
- - the gears that open the secret room in the SotN clock tower
- - the hammer game in either AoS or DoS (where you have to ring the bell!)
- - the platform you ride in AoS, where you have to press the d-pad to get through
- - getting the Pneuma glyph in OoE

And though it maybe isn't a "little detail", but I really like learning of new secrets and shortcuts, like the secret elevator in the outer wall of SotN (you can access the same room later after you get the mist form).  However, that's the only secret/shortcut thing I can remember at the moment.

How about the MUSIC BOX stage in LoS1. The song it played once you had all the song parts was VAMPIRE KILLER.

(it's a same that was the only real classic CV song in the LoS saga aside from the WATERFALLS OF AGHARTHA).

And Nothing To Lose. As well as that atmospheric piece from the very first stage of SCIV.

little things-

Breakable candles and shit in LoS1's castle. Made me smile.

Also, those small nods to old characters, often times smaller ones. i recall a dead knight speaking to his wife "Iris"

dat painting

also speaking of huge paintings the pieces of wall coming down in chronicles/x68000 hallway leading to the death fight revealing it's in fact a painted wall and not an actual landscape

then there's the basrelief portraying some kind of dragon beast in the pillar bones room in the clocktower (x68000 again) which does actually exists but cannot made my mind on where i saw it

I don't have a screenshot, but in PoR in the room right outside of where you fight Dracula, there is a statue or something in the background that appears to of a woman her child (a baby). And while thats something on its own, I wouldn't be surprised if the woman and child depicted were Lisa and an infant Alucard.

Hmmm, I suppose it is Lisa and Alucard.

I always though (I am pretty sure) that the image outside the Dracula`s room is a description of the book of Revelation chapter 12 verses 1 to 4 (in the Bible). And lets remember is not the first time that a passage of the Bible is "cited" in a CV game (Matthew 16:26 I believe...).

EDIT: Another "little thing" is the same image, but without the heads in the secret room (upper room), with a scyte slash in it (I am sure that it was Death`s scyte).

Yes, that was the one. I also never said it was of Lisa and an infant Alucard. I only said that it could be and wouldn't be surprised if it was. That's all.

My mistake, then, your statement was correct. Maybe is the fact that I love to read the book of Revelation as a child, so when I see that image in PoR, I recognize from the book.

Since I've been playing LoS, a few little things I've noticed are:

- Sometimes, if you dodge into an enemy it makes them stumble and fall over.
- When you throw a goblin (after lighting it's grenades), it runs around in a panic X-D

In LoS1, if you toss daggers with shadow magic, they are fireballs.

Similarly, in LoS2, shadow daggers + chaos = fireball.

Except if you read those verses they don't match the statue exactly. Given the woman child and Dragon before the Throne room I'd say it is Lisa

Well, the image that I see have a woman, a child, a dragon and some stars. The cited verses mention that three characters, and that the dragon wiped the third part of the stars in heaven. I know that is not very exact with the ingame image, but as I said, reading that part of the Bible and then see it in the game, to me is imposible to not make a comparission... The only ones who knows what it means for real, is the PoR programers :P...

The woman actually looks like Lisa though, who according to the Japanese manual is "A wan like the Virgin Mary"
Okay, maybe that's not supposed to be taken literally, but while we're on the biblical train,
if anything it's an allusion to Dracula's pact with Satan, added to the fact his true demonic form is that of a Dragon.
