Title: Opions about the Kid Dracula games.
Post by: Nagumo on April 11, 2014, 11:30:56 AM
These games are like the most ignored aspect of the franchise. Most people don't even know they are related to Castlevania at all. Nobody talks about them here, they tend to get ignored by people who write retrospectives, almost never covered on fan sites, etc. Therefore these two cute and bizarre games deserve their own thread.

What are your thoughts on these games?

I love them both, kind of Megamanish gameplay (jumping and shooting).

I never played the GB version, but I screwed around with the NES one several years ago. For some reason, I just really never got into it. But I guess I never gave it a chance, I only briefly played it for the novelty of it and to hear the remix of Beginning. I guess I didn't give it a fair chance.

I did laugh at the swastika ghost boss, though.

Even when the first time I played it since late 1992, I knew this game is meant to be a spinoff of Castlevania and it shows on the very first stage which is obviously redesigned of Dracula's castle from Castlevania 1 and 3. I dig with mini games to gain additional lives or 1ups before you start on the following stages after stage 1.
The only thing I hate with this game was the quiz part and you have to correct the answers to get through on the following stages, I'm just trying to pick the answers randomly since I don't understand japanese, that's the part when I'm stuck and almost quit playing that game.

You can get a translation patch for the NES Kid Dracula now. I've played the game and it was a fun little romp. I've yet to finish it as I'm still trying to get through stage 3. I might have to resort to using save states... That damned roller coaster...or was it the witches that were hitting me off of the coaster..?

I'm talking about when I played that game in the actual console before. Now I already get past through the quiz part by using save states in emulator, save the part on each questions before I choose the answer and if I choose the wrong answer then load state and choose a different answer vice versa. ;D

As many forgotten CV games, I knew of Kid Dracula here in the Castlevania Dungeon around 2001, and give it a try, via emulators (I deleted it, so don`t worry ;)).

I love them both, kind of Megamanish gameplay (jumping and shooting).

I love it too. It feels different in terms of gameplay, but the first stage is a homage to the CVs in the NES, as Shinobi mentions. I remember that the final boss is Galamoth (is this a spoiler?).

Played them some a while ago. I don't remember which had it but the quiz section with the Statue of Liberty made me laugh a lot.

I suck at those games. Which is weird because I'd say I'm really damn good at Mega Man games.

I really like the soundtrack. Of course it's completely at odds with the rest of the series but it's your usual Konami excellence.

Kid Dracula - Stage 2 The Sky (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kaVCSTh-wek#)

Kid Dracula - Stage 8 Spaceship (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzLQJai2DmU#)

I'm also curious about the development history of this game. I want to know what the thought proces behind it was. But most importantly, a transcript of the meeting during which they decided to put Lady Liberty in the game.

I have beaten GB version and own the GB version. I've played around with the famicom version, but I've never beaten it. Kid Dracula is such an adorable game! I love all the cute sprites! The music isn't that bad either. I remember it being easy though. I think I had to retry that amusement park stage a few times, but the rest of the game didn't really give me problems.

I remember I had read about Kid Dracula a while before I had actually gotten it. I don't remember exactly when I first heard about it though. I just remember being really excited when I had found the GB version for only $12 at a local game store a few years ago...especially since it is kind of rare and I didn't expect to find it in my dinky town of all places, lol. I have noticed that people are trying to sell it for about $50 now on Ebay.

I think they're charmingly late 80's/early 90's games. I have no reason to dislike them, and while easy compared to almost any Classicvania (and maybe even a few Castleroids), I love that they are VERY hard games compared to what passes for kid's games today. They also have a level of polish and fine tuning not often found in today's kids games, which tend towards the shovelware end of the spectrum.

All in all, they're pretty good, and I have no reason to dislike them. They don't make pretenses of screwing with a larger canon, and the fact that they occupy their own little seperate "bubble canon" is good enough for me.

Why didn't Esco ever add a "Kid Dracula" playable character for his SOTN Hacked project? That would have been so ace I cannot describe it.

Because Esco thinks he's god on earth (and that was a real f**ked up mess). Even if you told him your suggestion he wouldn't listen to it. He expects people to sign up for his specialty SotN Hack website because it was too much of a hassle to check in with his CV Dungeon thread. Only then will he give your ideas a look-see (if he feels like it). But most likely he'd just ignore it.

I like them but I'm not very good at them. I'm terrible at Mega Man and Mega Man-type games in general. Also not very good at schmups. Still the character is cute and I'm glad his games got the Galamoth nod in SotN.
