how many here have actually played thru haunted Castle? i'm assuming less than half. prolly because most dont have access to play it conventionally (it was actjually ported to ps2 but Japan-only), or are just scared of its unforgiving difficulty. is it fare to say this is the hardest game in the series. there are other hard games, cv adventure can be considered difficult for noobs. not counting manually raising the difficulty (like i know raising the setting to hard in cod or loi's crazy mode, even adventure rebirth) but this game on default is just a nightmare
this video makes me laugh

I always considered Haunted Castle to be a Quarter stealer game, Jacking the difficulty so hard that the only way to progress is to empty your wallet...
Still, I would love to see it remade in vein of Hard Corps: Uprising
-
Yes it's hard but not impossibly hard like Battletoads so I was able to beat the game. Still I wasn't able to beat it with just one credit and if my memory is correct, I purposely killed myself in the latter levels so my life will be fully charged.
-
I've only ever managed to finish the game twice, and I suppose I should feel proud of that accomplishment. The first time was a total fluke. No lives and little life. Never ever thought that I would survive getting to Dracula, much less killing him without taking more then 1 hit (god bless my lucky ass-hidden horseshoe). The second time wasn't nearly as epic but still another victory under my belt. Haunted Castle is a brutal S&M vampire Mistress. She'll empty your wallet and you will just keep 'cumming' back for more.

I managed to play it sometime last week and I only got to the fifth level since I blew like 30 quarters or more.
But yeah, it's not hard as Battletoads but it's just obnoxiously difficult, especially if you don't have the sword.

That video is great if you mute the audio.

Are you playing version M (hard as hell) or version K (tolerable difficulty)?
I hear different versions of the arcade board ROM have different difficulties.
I only get somewhat-far on version K.

I recall Morgoth Galaxius from way back when stressing how invaluable the stop watch is in HC. He's quite possibly the only bastard alive to have beaten Version M.

I can't do any boasting about this game. I have very limited time spent playing it due to its rare nature and the fact that i don't emulate. I hope to get the PS2 version at some point with a region free system. Even better would be to own the cabinet.. Yeah right, lol.
One of my favorites of all time is chronicles original version. I consider that a very difficult game. I have no doubt this game will quickly become another favorite if i ever get around to really playing it.

I find that if you switch version K's dip-switch settings to "easy" and crank up the player's strength to its highest setting, then the game is much more enjoyable, because while still tough, it makes the game only slightly harder than the NES CV 1. Well, except for the fact that you only have three one-life-continues. Just throwing that out there in case anyone hasn't tried to play it like that yet.

A couple of years ago, a friend brought in his Haunted Castle board and a super gun, and I managed to finish it without dying once. The arcade controller is much better than keyboard keys for this game. It was definitely a version M, as I was able to take several hits without dying.

Oh yeah man, screw trying to play Haunted Castle with a keyboard. I beat it my first time on a keyboard, default settings (can't remember which version) but that was years ago, and I never plan on playing that with a keyboard again. Nowadays I play Haunted Castle on my Wii with a Classic Controller (hacked Wii, of course, with a MAME emulator running on it.)
-
I've never beaten the game but I've gotten most of the way through it (to Frankenstein maybe?) It gets a bad rap, but I really like it in that classic barbarian CV sense.

Got to play through it thanks to MAMEs' savestates i must admit, but i actually love this game beside how difficult it is. I think it was way ahead of its time, at least in terms of graphics and music, and also had some really nice platforming and action overall. The whole soundtrack is way underrated also

Agree with you, principally in the music term. My favorite track is Cross your heart (although, I love the MIDI version more, same that I hear a few years ago here in the Dungeon, I believe :D). I played the game in a MAME emulator, and without save states I reach the third stage. I have to recognize that is very difficult, principally with the Simon`s moveset, I think. When I hear the Cross your Heart track in PoR I felt amazed. Later I recognize other tracks in AoS and DoS (part of the fight with Julius and the Mine of Judgment`s Basement Melody).

Ugh, this game was sadly just such a gimmick to make money (which is irnonic considering how much it probably cost to make, advertise, and then have it flop). Its not very good overall, and the difficulty mostly stems from that fact. The balance is lousy; the hitboxes are messed up, and the fact that in some versions the enemies did an OBSCENE amont of damage is just unforgiveable.
