Title: Timespinner
Post by: Nail_Bombed on June 26, 2014, 02:38:34 PM
A neat looking Kickstarter Metroidvania project. Have a look.

Everybody knows how to make a Castlevania game, except Konami. Shame.

If im not mistaken, those are ripped graphics on some of the backgrounds. At least a few I recognise from Castlevania. SotN's caverns, and I think those stone blocks are from HoD (at 1:17 of their video). See below edit.

It's nice that they want to make a platformer, especially Castlevania inspired, but for God's sake don't steal pixel art for something you're looking to monetize. Fan projects are one thing, but this is pretty disgusting.

EDIT:
I knew I saw them before! Compare 1:17 of the video to the rooms in this:
Symphony of the Night: Marble Gallery (http://www.castlevaniacrypt.com/games/sotn/images/maps/marblegallery.png)

The cavern tiles in Timespinner looks like possibly altered rips, or inspired by, but not a direct rip. I didn't check them close enough to tell for sure. Compare to:
Symphony of the Night: Underground Caverns (http://www.castlevaniacrypt.com/games/sotn/images/maps/undergroundcaverns.png)

Well, they surely look ripped and edited, but I think it's safe to say it's temporary placeholder graphics. Otherwise, expect smart whippersnappers to pop the developer's bubble soon enough.

They showed that to the public, with the goal to make money. Being placeholder is not an excuse for that. It's the very core of what intellectual property rights are designed to protect against.

There's nothing like a good game of "spot the similarities":

Yup, the cave and gallery segments are from SoTN.
The castle stone tiles heavily resemble those used in CotM. (0:51)
The "Merchant Crow" mimics the Master Librarian: their rooms are identical up to furniture placement. (1:12) And Lunais gets a fairy!
The sword ability harkens back to OoE. (0:43)
Jumping bone pillars (0:45) Skeleton Gunmen (0:51) Maneaters (1:17) and of course a cloud from Mario.
And yes, those little damage numbers should remind you of something.

They showed that to the public, with the goal to make money. Being placeholder is not an excuse for that. It's the very core of what intellectual property rights are designed to protect against.
Regardless, it'll be crime if this game doesn't get funded -- clone or no clone. Considering what Konami's actually been doing with its intellectual property, intellectual rights are the least of my worries. Besides, there just aren't enough Metroidvanias out there for my taste.

It would be a good lesson for them to fall through, having ripped off others work to try and pass it off as their own and ask for money for it.

Anything less is condoning theft of work by others.

Whether or not Konami is doing anything with their properties, it doesn't give you the clear to steal from them.

I have my eyes on this project for some years now and if anything is worth paying to support it, is this.

They show this in the kickstarter:

They are going to change it

The title make me think this was a not Timesplitters game and it left me sad. :(

Then I saw that it is actually a not Castlevania game and I smiled again. :)

If only the protagonists were not 12-year-old children.

I'm glad they're going to change the art they copied. Hopefully they steer clear of that in the future. I'll have to keep an eye how they progress, since it looks pretty neat.

Looks like a dark version of Shantae what with the chibi-sprites.
I like!

It's like Shantae+Order of Ecclesia had a little PC child.

The graphics reminds me most of late era SNES more than anything.

It's been funded.
