I remember hearing a lot of positive buzz about this one. Is it worth picking up? It also makes me think we should compile a list of all the Metroidvanias (and far fewer ClassicVania clones) available on Steam/Desura/As freeware.

yeah its a great game. I got it the other day and played it about 3 hours so far. Its pretty metroidvania but with a lighthearted cutesy look/feel. It (and the first game) remind me of Monster World more than anything. But for sure I recommend it

I picked this game up sometime last year and finished it twice. I find it better the the first title due to the implimentation of a map system. It makes it that much more easier to navigate the world you're in. I'm still waiting on Shantae and the Pirate's Curse. It should be some time fairly soon. I heard that it's even more of a Metroidvania then Risky's Revenge was and over twice the size for the world it takes place in.

I haven't played the director's cut, but I have the original version and it's really good. It's not on the same tier as the Metroids and Castleroids, but it is a metroidvania.
The problem with compiling a list of metroidvanias is that everybody seems to have a different idea of what should be on it. Some people want to put the Zeldas on there, some people want to put the 3D CVs on there, and there's a ton of obscure little titles that don't really fit the mold, but people try to throw them on there anyway. But if that's okay with you, there are quite a few lists out there already.

The only thing different from the original DSi release that I'm aware of is the option to select the alternate costume. No added levels or anything from what I hear.
-
That's what I heard too. Although the alternate costume Shantae is apparently something of a 'hard mode' for players.

I'm gonna be hitting this up. Well... the only experience I have with the Shantae series is dabbling a bit in the Gameboy Color original, but this game looks pretty awesome.
-
I might check it out too, though I'm waiting for them to release the game they funded on Kickstarter :o

Compared to the original, it has less melee options, more spells/items, and much larger screen space which the game desperately needed.

I just recently started playing through the original on GBC, and that's my only experience with the series. If the GBC entry is any indication, I'd bet the newer ones are awesome as well. Good stuff.

I that case you've made a safe bet K.K. Drunkinski ;)
