Title: Getting all our graveyard ducks in a row.
Post by: Ratty on July 21, 2014, 11:35:29 AM
So I stumbled on this this legends of localization page I had missed before http://legendsoflocalization.com/digging-up-castlevania-iis-graveyard-duck/ (http://legendsoflocalization.com/digging-up-castlevania-iis-graveyard-duck/) which points out that ducks are a running gag in the series. Apparently the arcade game even has a joke ending triggered by a rubber duck. Legends of Localization also mentions a hidden rubber duck in OoE but misses the one in AoS. Can anyone think of other occurances of (rubber) duckies?

The article brings up the hidden message (which mentions the programer is scared of ducks) in a readme for the X68000 game, remember this? http://tcrf.net/Akumajou_Dracula_%28Sharp_X68000%29 (http://tcrf.net/Akumajou_Dracula_%28Sharp_X68000%29) too bad not all of the messages have been translated. Maybe some of the Japanese speakers here could tackle it?

the rubber ducky in AoS can be found in the bath house room with the 2 Succubus'

there are also flying mechanical ducks in Curse of Darkness in the bonus "chair" room

My grandparents used to have big white geese and people were afraid of them, even a big tough cop from Las Vegas, cause they were known to bite.

This is simply a theory of mine, but for years, I've wondered if using the term "duck" for the dude living in the graveyard wasn't somehow a misunderstanding on the Japanese side about the English term "squatter," which means someone who is basically a hobo camping out somewhere, and, since to "duck" is the same as to "squat," that's how the confusion happened.

It's actually been explained that yes, the Japanese version was also referring to a duck. Read the first link.

Nice find. I hope the author is right about the origin of all the duck references, because that would be hilarious.

In the Japanese version the villagers often told gossip. I think a lot of the hints were supposed to poke fun at the fact that rumors are often not entirely true. It's a lot more obvious with other hints. But yeah, this whole duck thing is bizarre no matter how you look at it. So, that's all I got.

I can only read hiragana and katakana, not kanji. I could read it if furigana was added to the text, but that's unfortunately not the case. So I can't help with the translation although I want to.

I have read about the duck in AoS somewhere stating that all Konami games for that year had a rubber duck somewhere, including that year's metal gear game (forgot what that was).

As for the translation, here it is:

Duck and I

Hello. I am Yadabon, the character designer. Thanks for buying Drac68. I am now in the middle of bug checking and it is very difficult~~~~. The rest of the team said that I am the worst player. Thus it took me 3 days to defeat Dracula in such a hard environment. I had a philosophy that I can do it, but now, I am in tears. Bwaaaah....

You users might say that I am weak since it took me 3 days to defeat 6 stages. It's ok, ok... boohoohoo... By the way, on my 6th round, did you see the abnormal phenomenon that was caused by the goddess of Block 4? Blood...Blood... For those who did not, it's best to keep silent.

While the game was in development, I bought books, watched horror videos in order to capture the imagery needed but I remembered that I can't handle horror movies, thus there were times that I did not even finish some of them. That was not helpful after all. What I meant to say was, scary things are scary, scary, scary. I remembered a scary memory. I hate of ducks. It is because if you kick the previous duck, they will instantly chase you at lightning speed. I fear ducks more than Dracula.

===================================================
There you have it. The reason for the ducks.

Yeah I heard that if you mess around with one duck you have to deal with the whole flock (if there is that many around). So it sounds like he brought this fear of ducks upon himself when he kicked 'em, lol.

Yeah, that's probably where the whole Cucco Swarm thing came from.

Who kicks a duck?

People who couldn't beat CV2, probably. :X

Makes sense, your legs don't need to be long if you're kicking your NES

Who kicks a duck?

Maybe the same type of people that beat up chickens? ;-)

That makes no sense. What depraved fuck would kick a poor innocent Nintendo?

A NES that doesn't work when you want it to. Believe me I've had my fill of such malfunctions, although it's never got to the point of me literally 'kicking' my NES around, lol.

Ducks really are nothing to trifle with though.  Once I saw a regular size duck bite on the tail of a huge white swan and the swan swam around in circles in a panic.

Do you mean to tell me that you saw a duck goose a swan?   ;)

Was the swan upset about the duck acting so ugly to him?   :D

Did the duck have a reason to be upset, or was he just a quack?   ;D

Ahh...puns!
