Title: REmake HD for PS3, PS4, X360, Xbone, and PC
Post by: Claimh Solais on August 05, 2014, 08:35:44 PM
http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2014/08/resident-evil-remake-will-itself-get-remade-in-hd/ (http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2014/08/resident-evil-remake-will-itself-get-remade-in-hd/)

Welp, it's finally happening. Non-Nintendo gamers will finally get to play the wonderful Resident Evil remake, in HD.

Hilariously, RE fans have been asking for this for YEARS, and now that it's finally happening, they're bitching like crazy. There's no pleasing that fanbase, I swear.

EDIT: I hope to god they redo the voice acting. I swear, outside of Wesker, this remake's voice acting was pretty abysmal. I hope they get all the current voice actors for the characters to redo the voices (Roger Craig Smith as Chris, Michelle Ruff as Jill, D.C. Douglas as Wesker, etc.). Though the dialog could use some rework, too.

EDIT 2.0: I missed this part, but they said there will be two control schemes selectable. The original game's control scheme, and one more like RE4(?). I don't remember the control schemes being that different, though... Maybe tactical reload and a knife button, a la Deadly Silence? (or the unlikely one, an RE4-style camera?!) See Edit 5.0.

EDIT 3.0: I see Sindra linked this in another thread, lol. I missed that. Was at work.

EDIT 4.0: Added comparison image. Looks pretty nice.

EDIT 5.0: Just got confirmation on what the other control scheme is (through the Resident Evil official page on Facebook). It removes tank controls. Whatever direction you push the analog stick in is the direction your character will go. I'mma play it with this control scheme to see how different it is, since I'mma be getting this. ...Since I love REmake.

I've been playing the shit out of this game for the past week and just beat Real Survival with Chris. What a wonderful coinky-dink.

More than playing it on a new laptop, I'm excited for thousands of other people to play it. As much as I enjoyed RE5 and RE6 co op with my brother, old RE is still king in my heart.

Hilariously, RE fans have been asking for this for YEARS, and now that it's finally happening, they're bitching like crazy. There's no pleasing that fanbase, I swear.

I know right? And if they redid absolutely everything from the ground up, the game would be 60 bucks and people would instead bitch about that. My only real complaint is that the Gamecube lighting effects make the mansion look really dirty and grungy in a way that the Remaster shots seem to lack. But jeez, you'd think Capcom's pulling a Silent Hill HD Collection or something.

Yeah, the voices in that game weren't great, although there were some unintentional humor moments. What I'm waiting for is a mod for the Steam version that inserts voice acting from the 1996 original.

My greatest hope is that Capcom decides to port the Outbreak games with proper online play somewhere down the line. Now that I'm actually good at old RE games I'd love a shot at playing these with other people.

As funny as an original voice mod would be, it wouldn't work without some edited lines, since a lot of the cutscenes are too different to work with (as in, they added some lines in certain areas). It shouldn't be TOO hard, though, since a lot of cutscenes have the same amount of lines and line placement as the original.

But I'm really hoping for new voice acting, especially since I absolutely LOVE Roger Craig Smith (hell, the guy's name is my PSN name).

Double post. Dunno if I shoulda made this a previous post edit or..?

UPDATE: Capcom is putting the future of Resident Evil in the fans' hands. (http://bloody-disgusting.com/news/3306767/capcom-putting-future-resident-evil-hands/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=capcom-putting-future-resident-evil-hands)

By that, they are essentially meaning that the sales of REmake HD will effect the RE franchise. If the remaster sells well, they will return to the roots of the series. Solitude, dark environments, largely horror based. If the remaster doesn't, they see no incentive to return to that and will continue making them like the more modern games (likely like RE: Revelations).

So for those of you that want the old REs back, it's probably best you buy this one, lol.

Also, the article suggests that the reason REmake HD took so long to happen is because horror games are just now becoming popular again (with all them indie clones like Slender, Amnesia, and Outlast).

Huh... The ole Capcom test huh? I really don't expect this to do gangbusters, but maybe brand power and the word of mouth on the Gamecube original will help.

I'd be okay with the other direction (RE6) if they just amped up the horror atmosphere and dialed down the Michael Bay a bit. Wasn't crazy about Revelations; it felt like a weird middle ground that neither excelled at having as fun a combat system as 4 and didn't really understand why the old games were entertaining.

Ultimately, I just want a good game with Barry as the lead.

I've had this and 0 on the Gamecube for several years but never played them. Kind of regret getting them now but eh. It would be nice to see the series go back to its roots at least stylistically. Zombies freak me out conceptually but they're practically a punchline these days, so it'd be nice to see "the" survival horror series do them justice again.

It honestly doesn't look that different. Most of it looks like they just beefed up the contrast.

It's good to know Resident Evil is finally getting out of the dark ages with their control scheme though. So long over due.

They need to redo both disks of Resident Evil 2 which I regard as the best of the series! I'd pay for an expansion of that game!

If this release does well I wouldn't be surprised if they re-release the PC versions of Resident Evil 2 and 3 on steam. With any luck they'd throw in the extras from the Dreamcast and N64 re-releases to make a definitive version of RE2.

I'd be up for it. A re-release on Steam of RE2 and RE3 would mean it'd be better compatible with newer systems, and that's a welcome change.

I've been playing through the series with the girly and getting excited about playing the remake again ever since we started the PS1 director's cut (pre-DualShock ver. with the superior music). We've finished 1 through Code Veronica and are currently on Zero.

Curious to see just how much better REmaster (lol) looks. I hope Digital Foundry can compare it to the Wii version before release (since the Wii version was progressive scan). I would hope that they're able to use some kind of pre-GameCube-compression version for the environments and that they were rendered a bit higher res. Those'll probably look funky either way, but done right, the character models should look a lot better at least. If there's even just the slightest bit more clarity, I'll be pleased. (The Wii version even being 480p still looks a bit fuzzy.) 4:3 and tank controls being an option is essential; I can't understand wanting to play a classic RE game without tank controls because the camera angles are constantly shifting, therefore Up should always be Forward. Plus it just makes some situations more tense when your movement is somewhat restricted (but at least it has that 180 degree quick-flip).

Redoing voices, no. That shit's for the birds; they might as well remake the game again if that were to be done. Just the GameCube game with better resolution and some slight enhancement tweaks is all it needs.

FTFY

But in seriousness, I'm pretty excited about this. I'm more concerned with fixing that vomit-inducing voicework than anything. That cast almost beat out Legend of Dragoon in bad acting (another thing that could do with a remaster IMO).

Agreed. This is the main reason why I've never been able to get into RE. It was just a big turn-off for me as I would get so turned around in the midst of a scrabble with zombies. Just working yourself around so that you can go in a particular direction was was wasting too much time (and health). But now that RE is getting a new coat of paint amongst other things then I'll definitely want to give the game another go.

I think it'll be interesting to try out. Also, IIRC, Resident Evil 2 on Nintendo 64 had analog movement (the kind where you push the stick in a certain direction and you run that direction).

I can't wait for y'all to get mega fudged over when you're trying to run away from a zombie and you end up running into it when the camera does a 180 degree shift lol. Tank controls have ALWAYS (even now) made sense for the old style of RE games with its static backgrounds.

This caused a lot of problems in Clock Tower 3. It's why I wished the game had tank controls.

Personally, I've never had a problem with the control scheme.

I remember this made some jumps in the original Devil May Cry (which started its development as a Resident Evil game) difficult in a silly way.

New trailer is out. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IjxFtFwY6jk) Looks as good as ever, but it unfortunately reveals they kept REmake's voice acting. Shouldn't have expected otherwise, but it's still a bummer.

I take it you're not aware that's an FMV. I believe it uses in-game graphics but is nevertheless rendered as an FMV. Of course it's going to look like dick.

The rest looks quite good (judging by a heavily-compressed YouTube video) and they seem to have handled the 16:9 conversion well. I'd love to have a PS4 to play this on so I can enjoy full 1080p, but I assume with this game it won't matter a whole lot, though I'll be curious to see what Digital Foundry concludes.

Japan is supposed to be getting a disc-based version on PS3 that has both English and Japanese text, so I'll likely end up importing that—but I'll wait for others to be the guinea pigs in case it doesn't actually have English text or other problems crop up.

It has nothing to do with being an FMV or not. The problem is the facial expression/animation.

I thought you were referring to the resolution.

But what does it matter? The game is twelve years old and will be 1080p on PC and the newer consoles. That's awesome. 480i/p copies can be retired.

I'm pretty excited for this.  REmake is probably the second best game in the series after RE4, and easily the best of the classic style of games.  It would be great to be able to play a widescreen version of this thing, hokey voices and all.  I just hope they get rid of the odd stuttering that would sometimes pop up while the Gamecube tried desperately to load the next scene.

Mostly encountered during cutscenes, that I remember. At the beginning when Barry busts into the dining room, for instance. Also hoping that gets fixed.

Also in certain areas of gameplay. Some areas' backgrounds were FMV cutscenes rather than just pre-rendered images.

Preordered this here (http://www.play-asia.com/resident-evil-hd-remaster-english-japanese-paOS-13-49-en-70-83zl.html): the Asian market release of the game, which should be out around Thanksgiving. PlayAsia says it'll have English text and voices (and Japanese if you have your console set to Japanese), so since it's a physical copy and comes out sooner than the US release, I really wanted to grab it.

Gameplay footage has Japanese voice acting, so they must have recorded it for this remastered version.

I know that, even so I dont have heard before about japanese voices in any game, in fact I know that at first they were even recording japanese voices for RE1 on japan, but even they prefered to forget about it and use english voices with subtitles instead.

Like you said, RE1 had Japanese voices being recorded but they were scrapped. But Resident Evil: Revelations, Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, and Resident Evil 6 all have Japanese voices. They've been applying them to the more recent entries.

...Yeah, I'm still around.

It is great REmake is coming multiplatform.   There are still a lot of people that haven't played the original RE1 story.
The classic is still great, but the remake is in a lot of ways better.

Here's some gameplay footage from the PC release (which is 1080p at 60fps). There's no more missing frames or blur during cutscenes which is excellent. Also, did Jill's boobs always bounce that much when she walks? She had a bit of bounce in the GameCube version, but they might have upped the bounciness a bit. :p That or being 60fps really showcases the physics.
