The younger you are, the less number of people from your age group would know about the franchise.

(Chuckle) I was also a minority back in school. Even though the NES was hot shit at the time Castlevania was a bit of a rarity for most. At least where I'm from. Most were into Zelda or Mario. Though over the years I gradually met people whom also were CV fans, then it was a different ballgame from then-on.

I'm 30. Castlevania was hot shit when I was a kid.
My brother and I were notorious gamers in our school, so the other kids that were into games usually ended up coming over to our house at some point. We had a lot of friends that were into Castlevania. And we got a lot of kids who had never heard of it into it as well.
But it certainly wasn't this obscure thing that no one had ever heard of. At least not in my town.
I remember one time in band class (I used to play the tuba). This kid who played sax that used to sit in front of me was sneakily playing his gameboy color. I whispered over to him "hey what are you playing?" and he passed his gb over to me. It was Castlevania Legends!
Haha. It's funny that I still remember that. But yeah, I ran into other kids who were into the classic CV's a lot back in the day.
We had a little party when SCV4 came out. We had like 8 friends over for a sleep over and played it all night long. Hahaha. We were all shocked by the topless Medusa. I remember looking over my shoulder every time we got to that part to make sure my mom didn't see the boobs. LOL. Good times. Good times.
So yeah. I certainly wasn't the only CV fan in my school. There were quite a few.
We had a really popular arcade in our town too. I think that had something to do with it. There was a NES Castlevania game in the arcade too. It wasn't Haunted Castle. But I remember a lot of kids were introduced to CV on that arcade machine they had.
Man.. I miss hanging out in the arcades back in the day. Ya know, when they were still hardcore. HAHA.

I had a few friends who played some CV in school but I was mostly the hardcore fan. Although my sister was in it too so I could always talk to her about stuff and crack jokes and whatnot. But hey people I know ask my advice on the games all the time and it's makes me feel like a expert XD

Those were wonderful days eh? Sadly all that is lost with the advent of the internet which also defeated the use of Nintendo power :'(

In almost every of my school history, there has been at least one friend of mine that likes Castlevania.
*At Elementary School (Primaria in my country) I meet Castlevania, but I have not much time to chat with friends about videogames related to my favorite saga.
*In my time in the next grades (Secundaria), I have a good friend that loves Castlevania, maybe more that I love it, so there is much time to talk about our favorite series (they also loves Megaman, so...).
*In High School (Preparatoria) again, I have a friend that loves Castlevania. He sells to me his SNES with some games, including SCIV, CVDX, Turtles in Time. I remember that, because of buying Legacy of Darkness for N64, he loses his chance to achieve one course, and eventually loses one year (if I recall) of school. The game cost the necessary cuote for achieve an important percentage of the course. We remain been good friends after that.
*I enter college (Universidad) some years after High School, and my friends were a little younger than I, but some of them likes videogames (principally soccer ones). Castlevania was not very popular among them. But my major surprise was in the last semesters. When I watching a gameplay video from LoS in YouTube, the only girl in our classroom ask me if that game was Castlevania. I agree, and then she said that Castlevania was her favorite videogame series :o. It was really strange to me, that a girl likes Castlevania, but maybe the more strange fact was that the girl works at that time in a Gentlemen Night Club :o :o :o...

I grew up in a pretty small town, so while there were other kids who liked games at one point, I was the only one who really stuck with them past the age of 12 or so. It's funny how when you're young, it feels like all of your problems are unique in the scope of history. No one's ever felt this way before! It was difficult being the only "nerd" in town.
Castlevania was always one of my favorite game franchises as a kid, Castlevania III, in particular. However, I don't think my true passion for it really took off until I ran across this site back in 2000. After seeing all the soundtracks that were available (R.I.P. gamemusic.com) and all the oddities between the American and JP versions of the games, it kind of sparked a new, deeper appreciation for the series.
And then Konami went and took a big shit all over it. Such is life.
