Title: James and Mike play Super Castlevania IV

They spend half of their commentary talking about how the SOTN-era games were subpar and Final Fantasy-ified the series.

How do you feel about that, CVD?

I feel there's quite a bit of merit to what they're talking about. And it's very true that SotN pretty much brought about the near-extinction of the classicvania format save for the odd remake or two, and the ReBirth title. Unlike the AVGN review they're just having a good old friendly chat while playing a game that had given them lots of fond memories and I can relate to that very much. I kinda miss those days actually...  :'(

I was disappointed to hear James Rolfe comment negatively towards the Metroidvanias, as I like James (and both styles of Castlevania equally, for different reasons)... But not Mike. It seemed like mostly Mike Matei who was shitting on the Metroidvanias, though.

How dare they have a different opinion than me.

I pretty much agree with them.

I was thoroughly entertained.

And I forgot how badass SCV4 was. Too bad there was never a direct sequel to that game.

I have the same opinion as James did, SCVIV is totally a real evolution of Castlevania than Metroidvanias. For me, Metroidvania is more like a "sex change" of Castlevania than a real evolution.

James(and Mike) loves the classics their style. In a way, I can  understand how they feel the CV series never reached the par that SCV4 set. Interestingly enough, it also seems James dislikes the 3D CVs, which given my opinion on the matter(I still feel a "perfect" 3D CV has yet to be made, or may NEVER be made), I can totally agree with.

I also agree with James regarding the chandelier part where the background flashes red, but is basically pitch black(I always felt it was somewhat unnerving too).

As they grew up with the first games, like most of CVD's members, it's normal they prefer the first games IMO. I like James' videos, and I'm happy he does more CV (even after the big 4 video marathon).

I would actually like to see an AVGN on the LoS trilogy.

For what it's worth I disagree with them, but hey, they disagree with me.

Holy shiz it hurts to hear James' hands tenderizing that poor SNES pad. How not to play video games, folks.

I guess it's been a while for those two. They've lost their edge playing SCV4, lol. Although that's not how I would tackle Death. There is a strategy that doesn't involve you having to throw yourself right into Death. Maybe they've forgotten it...

There is a right moment to attack Death in this game, thats why they die so often.
