I've been playing around with tile viewers and mednafen's debugger and found this boss(or mini boss) on stage 1's data:
the background color was already black by default so no way around it, sorry.
i showed this first to a good friend of mine i know here and he was amazed by this little finding of mine.
so... what do you think of this little beast?
PS:
this is NOT fanart.
-
Seems more like it might have been the boss if you took the lower path in stage 1. Looks very much like that could have been it. I always thought that water serpent was sort of a weird boss. the underground area itself felt weird IIRC. wasn't there a random dead end to the left when you drop down?
-
Yes there was

Radical. Can I use that sprite?

no need for permission, everybody can use it.
i only ripped it, so no need for those silly credits and permissions.

Wow, it's awesome to see something completely new, yet at the same time very old content like this, especially if it's from RoB. Looks really gorgeous. Why did they never end up recycling this one?

maybe they forgot about it for a long time and never minded it.

Interesting boss. Maybe it could have been a proposed boss for the secret stage after you finish off Dracula thus gaining access to it. But who knows? Maybe they ran out of time in development or it wasn't convincing enough. It looks pretty bulky and cumbersome so maybe a half boss then?
-
It looks kinda unfinished, so maybe it's the former.
-
Very interesting find! :)
-
I love the sprite. A tad stiff, though, but we'll never know what the devs had in mind.
-
Looks to me as though you forgot to give the boss his neck, isn't that what the circular parts on the top left would be for.
The extra boss in Dracula X chronicles was a hydra as well so maybe they had this fellow in mind when they added it.
-
This boss reminds me of Crocomire from Super Metroid.
-
Holy crap, great find!

Well, I dare say that you are the first person to uncover this sprite and assemble it, that is why I asked.
I would of asked regardless.

good point, but sadly yesterday at night i've been looking around the net about this boss and i found out that i wasn't the first in discovering it, there where others who found it before me but they mostly talked about it or showed little parts of it.
so i may not be the first on discovering this boss in the end, but at least i'm the first at showing it to the general public, with every single sprite possible it had in the data(well there is more, but it's mostly a litlle doodle and a briefcase sprite i think).
so don't worry, no need for credits.

Cool man that is neat stuff. Hey, feel free to find anything else hidden like this in the data from Rondo and post it!
Makes me wonder if there are more?
-
Oh wow, these games still have really cool secrets to uncover. That's really awesome that was just hiding out in there.
Makes you wonder why it didn't make it into DXC in some form.

OK...
brought more unused stuff from RoB, only problem was that most of them i needed to rip it with yy-chr tile viewer because mednafen's debugger only lets me see what's in memory, so basically no palettes, only grayscale for now.
interesting things i found where:
1)jumping kid
2)briefcase
3)tiny stage title, candles and recovery items
4)stage boss announcement(only for death)
and 5)what seems to be subweapon icons similar to maria's, only the turtle is the same(left her subweapon icons for comparison).
that's all folks.

The Japanese scripts translates to "Gods give me your strength".

Which would translate in Latin into something like "Tues Deus Meus, In Manibus Tuis (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0iDPAUWoODE)". Everything is related!!
-
OMG! You are right.
They really thought about these things as well. Awesome.
-
The head reminds me of the new Hydra boss from Alternate Stage 5 from The Dracula X Chronicles.
If you recall, the Rondo of Blood version of that stage has no boss.
I imagine this boss to have been something you'd have to climb on, based on its staircase-like backside. I am willing to bet it has a serpentine segmented neck section and probably a few walking frames here and there.

I saw this posted elsewhere and I commented the same thing. Great minds and all that. :P

Ironically Jop's friend just showed that to me and him the other day..unused boss from rondo. I think it's body is pretty neat.. It looks sorta like a turtle head imo. hm..wonder why they never used it?
on second inspection...looks to be a giant aguana or something..maybe the red line was supposed to be its' tongue..and not a lazer from it's eye. The sprite jop showed me had that..but it was the same beast..

that was an early rip i did before, and i tought it was it's eye laser, that was until i discovered the mouth effect for that beam.
-
Yes sorry about the confusion here, FlyingMudBlock is a good friend and showed me that, I think he is not going to show so I showed to you the old rip, with the laser in the mouth looks better.
-
That's awesome! I wonder how many other CV games have stuff like this hidden in them.
-
Have you submitted this to TCRF yet? They love stuff like this.

I just submitted it today for those who are interested on it.

This is probably the most logical guess.

I can't believe after all these years no one has ever found this. Absolutely amazing!
Edit:
Looks like someone pointed this out in 2012

Indeed, it also makes you wonder what else might be hidden in some games that we don't know about yet.
