I've been strangely into Legends lately. I used to not think too much of it, but lately I've been playing it. It's flaws SEVERELY piss me off,
1.) Re spawning enemies Ninja Gaiden style
2.) Stage 4's theme is F*CKING garbage!
3.) Easy to accidentally turn on burning mode
4.) Hard to activate burning mode sometimes
5.) Having 0 hearts when you die (the games built around using the soul weapons depending on the situation, so not having enough hearts can make you a little too weak)
6.) If you jump towards a rope and let go of the dpad slightly too early, you'll fall to your death
7.) Some overly long stages
8.) The time limit gives you JUST enough time to pass with the sub weapon found on each stage (a game with such big levels, ones that require exploration for 100% completion, seriously shouldn't have a time limit)
9.) Doesn't look horrible, but definitely not as good as B'sR
I know it's not cannon anymore, but wouldn't it be great to see a remake eliminating the problems above? Remixed music (NEED to hear an orchestral version of Legends' bloody tears), enhanced graphics (Sonia's sprite is alread ybased on SC4's Simon, just change that sprite up a bit). You could also flesh out the story further, like maybe an opening level where Dracula's attack starts, more backstory to Alucard and Sonia's relationship etc. Sounds cool to me, and there are tons of CV fan projects out there.

Castlevania Legends Rebirth is something I've wanted for awhile, but after I heard the team behind Rebirth disbanded I stopped thinking such a thing was possible.

With the game out of canon I doubt Legends would see an official remake. Plus, you have to admit The Adventure needed an update more than Legends does. Still, I wanna see Legends' potential fleshed out more outside of GB restrictions (better scale and storytelling mostly).
-
I'd be down for this. It's been some time since I seriously revisited Legends, and I used to be one of those fanboys. You know the type.
That being said, I've noticed the fandom at large gradually warming to Legends, whereas originally it didn't seem like a well liked game at all. I wonder what triggered this, if anything at all.

God, who knows. I guess some of the fans were too disappointed with the way the series has progressed as of late. Then one of them sees Legends after all that and decides "This game's not as bad as I originally though it was."
I feel that Legends also has much untapped potential. Reworking the story just a bit so it sits more favorably in the canon's eye, remastered music, better graphics, add more stages while shortening the originals so they aren't quite as long. Have a more stronger purpose for collecting all the sub-weapon icons and not just so we can see the better ending of Legends. And definitely use the Japanese story but have it properly localized this time 'round.
Another aesthetic that I feel the game could us is:
Give Sonia a longer VK whip as it was too damned short. Even shorter then the ones from CV Adventure and Belmont's revenge. Aw heck, throw in the 8-directional whipping as well and we can get in some more creativity in the stages. Sonia already uses Simon's crouch walk so why not go all the way?
-
I've always had a bit of a soft spot for the story for Legends, even though it's one of the ones I've not been able to play. But I find the story interesting, with the consequences of the idea of Trevor being Sonia and Alucard's son being pretty significant. My brain has come up with numerous ideas on what could happen should Trevor, or Julius (in particular) ever find this out.

How could I forget to mention how small the ship is? That is a problem for me too, and yes, Sonia is basically the same as SC4 Simon, so we could rework that sprite and the thought of the 8 direction whipping came to my mind as well (since u have the soul weapons which operate differently instead of the sub weapons, the 8 direction whipping won't hinder their operation). And going out of your way to collect the sub weapons in the face JUST for one extra screen at the end is pretty disappointing. Maybe make the ability to play as Alucard if all are collected, and even the ability to use them, for old time sake.
BTW, how do the original Japanese story go? I didn't know Legends went through a muddy translation.
-
Legend's story is one of my bigger pet peeves. I really don't like it. I find it rather annoying that the only female Belmont in the series has such a garbage fan-fiction plot surrounding her.
-
Yeah, if anyone's going to remake Legends the first order of business would be to rewrite the story from the ground up. So... Any ideas?
-
Alucard + Sonia is definitely fan fic-like. I think it could work if it was explored more, I stead of just Alucard coming in and talking about it once out of nowhere.
If I remember correctly, Sonia's major motive for killing Dracula was because the Belmont manner was attacked, killing her family members. That should be added in, more fleshed out relationship with Alucard, and maybe add Sucubus or another femmefetale to be a sort of rival to Sonia.
-
I managed to save a little something for this thread. Incubus brought it to the forum's attention a while back and it was the Japanese story translated;
*A
Transylvania in the Middle Ages…
One man obtained the powers of the Devil, to change this world into one of darkness, and to gain eternal life…
Not long ago, that man, who became the Demon King, used his supernatural powers and loyal followers of evil called forth from the Otherworld to spread darkness and despair across all of Europe.
…Count Dracula. The people feared the name of the Demon King, yet they could do nothing but voice their worries of a Dark Age the likes of which have never been seen.
*B
Meanwhile, a young girl with mysterious powers was born to an aristocratic family in the countryside. Surprisingly, the girl had special powers that the townspeople couldn’t understand, that they called supernatural. The girl was raised by her grandfather, who was the first to notice her strange powers, telling her, “You must not use your powers only to help yourself…” One night, when she was seventeen years old, while searching for her departed father, she met a mysterious young man named Alucard, and the wheels of fate slowly began to turn… (NOTES: There is a mistranslation. It is Alucard that looks for father. Not Sonia)
*C
However, without warning, tragedy suddenly struck. Her mansion was attacked by Count Dracula’s monstrous underlings, and upon returning to the town at the foot of the mountains, she only found her grandfather, breathing weakly. “Now is the time to make use of your powers…” Repeating her grandfather’s last words in her heart, the young girl took up his whip and turned towards the Demon Castle.
*D
The young girl’s name is Sonia. She is the forerunner, who leaves behind to this world the name of the Belmont clan of vampire hunters.
-
Much more descriptive and much better I'd say than what we got over here. I like the idea of Sonia going out for vengeance, I used to think it was just that she wanted to help the suffering people.
If a fangame comes about, we're using all of this information. BTW, a name could be a problem, but I think incorporating the English and Japanese titles has a nice click to it- Castlevania Legends: Dark Night Prelude

Yeah, if anyone's going to remake Legends the first order of business would be to rewrite the story from the ground up. So... Any ideas?
Maybe start with the first (chronological) and essential element tying the games together, the Vampire Killer. What happened to it between Leon and Sonia?
Sonia comes home one night and finds her family mansion in ruins. What if Alucard had actually done this due to not being able to curb his vampiric abilities. It could make for a nice twist.
-
Just curious, in regards to the enemy spawning, can you use SNOT? (the Side Nullification Obliteration Technique)

That's a really good idea! And it would make the Alucard battle better instead of the generic "I'll try to kill you, love, to test your strength!" Plus it gives Alucard another reason to fight his dad, to make up for what he did as well as for his mother.
And iwhether we want to make it canon or not, the Vampire Killer should have something in this game. Idk about you guys, but I'd prefer to leave LoI out of this, and make this an alternate take on the first Belmont battle, so your pick whether it goes Leon or Sonia. Sonia does have a strange supeehuman power, maybe that could effect the VK as well since she starts using it.

I know it sounds fan-ficcy, but I've at times considered what if for a time in his youth, despite what happened to Lisa, he sided with his father for a time, as commander of his forces. At some point, he had a run-in with Sonia, and while fighting, he ha a sudden moment of hesitation, where he was reminded of his mother, and her words to him as a boy. At which point, he starts trying to find a way to win against his more in control at the time vampiric nature.

That's a really neat idea! It could add to Alucard, and falling in love with Sonia is a good idea to betray Drac, but at the same time it seems VERY out of character for him. You can tell from his dialogue in SOTN and Legends that he has a deep hatred for his father's cause, and that he will do anything to stop him.

If you're trying to insert Legends in the canon, and have Alucard in it, there are some things you must consider first:
- Sonia exists in the 1450s.
- Alucard is an adult in Legends (1450s).
- Lisa dies as a young woman by the 1470s. Alucard is a boy at this time.
- Dracula starts his war right after her death.
Alucard can't exist by the 1450s because Lisa is a human woman. By her youthful appearance before her death, Lisa was either not born by the 1450s, or she was an infant, therefore not making it possible for Alucard to exist.
To make it work, you either have to drag Sonia into the 1470s to adjust the cronology with Lisa's existence, or you're gonna have to retcon a bunch of things.
But then again, if you choose to place Sonia in the 1470s, she can't possibly be Trevor's mother. So I guess the retcon would be the better choice :P

A LOT of reworking to be done. Even if a game doesn't come to fruition, it'd just be fun to change Legends up a bit for it to make sense, even if retconing comes into play. I'll write a story for a potential game in my free time.
-
If you'd really like to remake Legends and make it fit in the canon with minimal retcons, then how about setting the game where it is supposed to be and include Lisa.
Involve Sonia in the events leading to Lisa's death.
She shows up in Walachia on the hunt for Drac and meets Lisa.
At some point Sonia's soul powers could been conflated with Lisa's healing arts by the increasingly superstitious villagers leading to the witch burning.
Then Sonia isn't able to save her because she's fighting Dracula at the time.
This could create a reason for Dracula to hate the Belmonts and for Sonia to want to leave Walachia as I imagine the local church would be looking for the "other witch".
Maybe throw in a male supporting character that could be implied to be Trevor's father since we don't need the corruption of the Belmont bloodline to happen so early.
-
That would get in the way of Trevor's age (CVIII happens 6 years after Lisa's death), and Alucard must be around 14-16 or whatever around that time, so that in CVIII he is in his early twienties.
After looking back at LoI's story, the end of the credits states basically that the Belmonts will not face Mathias/Dracula for several centuries, as he's gone into hiding all over various countries. It sounds lazy, and Iga could've implemented many more interesting encounters with Mathias/Drac leading up to CVIII.
That little "lazy" bit of excuse for the Belmonts not to face him is actually really good for potential side stories:
A Belmont is in search for Mathias, keeping with his/her father/grandfather's promise to his former friend now foe that his family shall hunt him down. He/She will cross over various countries (similar to Bloodlines) in search of Mathias, coming empty handed each time. They shall eventually succeed, putting him to sleep for a century while human hatred slowly builds his power. He goes into hiding once revived, but in Transylvania, where the Belmonts have been exiled from due to their "superhuman" powers and strength, making a safe place for him to reside, building his new castle, Castlevania. Once the townspeople murder his beloved, however, he turns on them, forcing the church to call in a Belmont to save them, who's name is Trevor Belmont.
This unknown Belmont in search of Mathias can easily be Sonia, with a new love interest, whose motive for going against Mathias will be decided eventually (unless the story is revamped further).
-
You could always remove DracMat and insert another vampire and make it about Sonia trying to track down you-know-who.

I see Alucard's insatiable bloodlust and how it affects humans as a good enough reason to have initially despised his father.
I can see Alucard nearly killing Sonia but then having a flashback about how the humans killed his mother, both exhausted with Alucard pulling back the fight ends.. Whether they consummate after this could be left open.
Alternate scenario: Sonia is about to kill Alucard but pulls back because her eyes have been tainted and all she can see is her dying father's eyes. At this point Alucard explains the curse of his bloodline, how his father became the demon king by inheriting an incredible power and building his ungodly army accordingly. Sonia informs Alucard about a great ancestor who bore the spirit of a lion (Leon) who passed the whip down to her father, the whip which was meant for eliminating the source of evil (and all things associated). The two agree to join forces and head for Dracula's castle.
Leon's lineage/ blood was said to be enchanted right, so maybe this is where Sonia inherited her superhuman abilities.. Mystical Bloodline?

Exactly the problem, and what makes the idea fan-ficcy if using the official timeline. It would require some amount of adjusting of dates, etc. to work, and have Lisa's death happen in the grey expanse of time between LoI and CVIII, which has its own issues. I freely admit this. But the idea still bounces round my head. :)
-
Why not just have her be a later Belmont's mother instead of Trevor's? Maybe even Richter's mom, and have her die giving birth to him, which was why he grew up as a servant in Annette's household :o Or maybe Simon's mom instead? Or perhaps Simon's daughter (making her Juste's mother) :D
-
Any of that can work for a remake, but you would definitely have to divorce Sonia from being involved with Alucard and birthing Trevor.
-
I think it is somewhat explained that Dracula didn't rebel against humanity until they've killed Lisa. Before that he was only a vampire with servants (that can include monsters) and a castle. So we can make it in a way that the day that Dracula's minions killed Sonia's parents was the same day that Lisa was killed. This opens time to Alucard know Sonia well and in a peaceful time.
After she wins a battle against Alucard and he enters in a slumber, he only awakes at CV3 events in the catacombs, one explanation to that is that he slept in a coffin inside the castle, but after the castle crumbled, his coffin fell with the castle remains in some cave. Then when the castle reappears its still below it (but we need to ignore this idea, because in CV3 the castle was there all along). Then he discover that his father was alive and decides that this time he will need to help to make sure that he really dies this time.
To fix some things, since Lisa was killed officialy somewhere between 1470s and CV3 happens in 1476, lets "kill" Lisa before in 1460 and this way Trevor will have 16 years when CV3 happens (at the past, adulthood came before of 18). This way we can insert Legends in 1460 and tell a story where Dracula didn't really dies, but is hidden in secret regaining power, becoming more stronger (Dracula 2nd form in Legends seems a weaker and incomplete transformation) and forming a greater and stronger army to attack Wallachia,.
We can make it in a way that in Legends it was a minor-scale attack. It wouldn't make sense to Dracula have a enormous army from the beggining, even in the timeline it seems that it tooks at least some time until he got a army. Maybe choosing to begin the game 1 to 7 day after Lisa death would make even more sense.
Now I think that everything feels right without touching any other title. Still, it would be good to make subweapons backstory more interesting, since I dislike how they simply "are there" in Lament of Innocence with a simple excuse that killed hunters left it there.
Idon't think that she should be able to use them because this way it would be almost obligatory to she be able to mix magic and subweapons like in Harmony of Dissonance xD
Or not, I don't know, any ideas of how their spells and subweapons could coexist without one making another obsolete?
-

Edited:
Dracula originally rebelled against God for taking his beloved Elisabetha. The whole building an army of unholy creatures seemed to be to get back at God by attacking humanity; who God made in his image. Mathias was probably building up his power/ army in his Castle at this time.
When he met Lisa (presumably Elisabetha reincarnated, at least it's inferred that he believed that) and humanity took her away from him, I think this was the straw which broke the camel's back, which is why Dracula started to unleash his wrath upon humanity, torture humans, curse humanity (or at least the better part of Europe) etc. This is also a way of attacking God indirectly.

This works out really well! The same thing did happen in The Adventure, only Soleiyu didn't fight Dracula like Trevor did following this idea.

I'll gladly lend my artistic hand to anyone making a Legends remake.

Any help is awesome, man! I think we should all collaborate together, even if online. It can be difficult but it happens a lot. My brother is pretty good at making music, I could ask him to make remixes of the soundtrack.
I call dibs on narrative director(want to be a film major)! ;D
If we all settle on one of the plots we came up with then I guess one of us can get to writing the dialogue and opening scene.

Super Castlevania Legends
Sounds sexy as hell.
There should be a whole Super timeline. Ya know, the timeline that should of happened...

Unfortunately. I'd argue BR doesn't really need a remake, but like Adventure, Legends has a LOT of issues that could be ironed out.

Finished a draft of the story. Needs some rewriting, and once I'm satisfied with it, I'll post it and see what you guys think.
A few peices of information:
-No Alucard
-Takes place in 1294
-Coller, the unused character from CV64, is a main character, and we learn why he would've betrayed Dracula.

Still better than the Alucard in Captain N who rides a rocket skateboard.

You know as bad a rendition Simon was in Captain N, by 90's standards as a kid he was actually good comic relief. By the time season 3 came around it seemed all characters were butchered.

Imagine a Captain N redone with 100% accuracy to the characters, then Launch the New Captain N in Smash Bros.

Seems really interesting, man. I'll have to continue reading it when I have some more time to do so. I'm planning on finding a used Kindle DX, so maybe I'll have a more pleasant reading experience on that hopefully... Damn, why don't they still make HUGE ass screened ereaders anymore :(
Seems really fucking awesome, though. It's always nice to hear from people behind any product and get an insight into how they attempted to execute their vision of their work.

I'll post my so-far final draft of the story. I know it's pretty cheesey and fan-ficky, but hey, it's a Castlevania plot... for a Legends remake ;D
So far I've had issues with the castle, and it's a plothole so far. Nothing final, there are plot holes, but if you guys are interested, I know some of you are WAY better storytellers than I am, and I think a Legends fangame would be quite an awesome project.
Castlevania Legends: Dark Night Prelude
The year is 1294, two hundred years after Leon Belmont's struggle against his former friend and fellow knight, Mathias. Leon had promised that his bloodline would devote themselves to hunting down the darkness and ultimately send Mathias to his grave, but Mathias had gone into hiding for years.
Many heirs to the Belmont name had searched for Mathias all over Europe, with no luck. After one hundred years, Victor Belmont (yes, a reference to Resurrection if you were wondering) developed a strategy; to spread the influence of the Belmont family throughout many parts of the world. Victor had spent his time growing a trade business, which eventually became a success, leading the Belmonts into aristocratic status.
Mathias grew fearful, as the Belmonts were growing getting closer and closer. He decided to settle down in Transylvania, and he had a plan to keep his enemies out.
The townspeople he knew were especially afraid of dark magic and supernatural pressence. Mathias had claimed the Belmonts were a family of superhuman ability (hence why the Transylvanian people fear the Belmonts before CVIII). Mathias settles down, offers protection from them, and becomes somewhat of a deity to them. Mathias settles down in a castle in Romania, near the outskirts of Transylvania.
This sets back the Belmonts, as Transylvania has an army, as well as Mathias to contend with. Years pass, and while the Belmonts live peacefully in the mountains outside of Romania, the Belmonts raised Sonia, the next in line to seek out Mathias.
One day, after training with her grandfather, Sonia decides to practice by herself with the whip, hitting posts set outside. A man comes up the hill, and Sonia demands to know who it is. The man claims his name is Coller, a lone traveler and trader. He asks to see the head of the trade, and Sonia takes him to her father.
Later, that night, Coller stays the night in the guest room. Him and Sonia bid each other farewell, as he'll be traveling with her father in the morning on a trade expedition. Then, after falling asleep, Sonia is awaken by the screams of her family members and a sharp heat. She hears and smells burning. She rushes outside her room and sees the mansion burning around her, her family members on the foyer dead, along with a woman holding a large knife.
She rushes up to Sonia, but Sonia jumps out the nearest window and runs for the shed. After going into a secret tomb, she picks up the Vampire Killer and does battle with the woman, who claims to be named Carmilla. Sonia kills her, and with her dying breath, she puts on a mask.
Coller rushes outside, surviving the flames. Sonia is in shock of seeing her family dead, and the burning down of her home. Coller snaps her out, and then Sonia tells Coller of the struggle between her family and Mathias, and how she knows it must've been his doing. Coller claims he will accompany Sonia after she vows vengeance. Coller and Sonia use Coller's carriage, and travel for a few months. I that time, Coller and Sonia's relationship begins to grow.
Once they get to Transylvania, the town is protected by a gate. Coller and Sonia seperate, Coller getting in through the main entrance, with Sonia having to break in due to her Belmont relation. Sonia gets in through the east guard tower. She kills guards and fights a large bat at the top of the tower. She rushes through the town as guards chase, and meets Coller in front of the castle. They enter. After fighting through the castle together, Coller is wounded. He tells Sonia to go ahead and leave him.
Sonia gets to the top floor, and Mathias has Coller tied to a post in the room. Mathias tells Sonia that Coller was sent with Carmilla to confirm her target. Coller claims he felt guilty for what he had done, so he did what he could to help Sonia. Dracula says that if Coller wants to live, he has to challenge Sonia in combat. Coller refuses and Mathias stabs Coller in the stomach, killing him.
Sonia runs over to accompany Coller, and thanks him for trying to make up for what he had done. She says she loves him, and with his dying breath, Coller claims that a servant of Mathias will return just as Mathias himself can return in reincarnation. If Mathias rises again, so will he. Coller dies, and the floor breaks under Sonia's feet.
After fighting her way to the underground sanctuary, Sonia fights and defeats Mathias. The castle crumbles, and Sonia escapes Transylvania. She later gives birth to the next heir to the Belmont legacy.

I know its cheesey and flawed. I do have dialogue, but I use Film Writer to develop in screenplay form and it doesn't allow you to just copy and paste, so I just typed up a quick barebones version.
I originally thought of Mathias promising eternal life to the townspeople to achive his status, but then wouldn't they be afraid of him too? I think it could still work, and I like that approach, but I also liked this idea, because these events make the townspeople even more paranoid, which can in hand lead to Lisa'a execution, so his plan kind of ends up biting Mathias/Drac in the ass.
I also contemplated whether or not having the Belmonts live in Transylvania, and Mathias tells them that the Belmonts are supernatural so they're the ones who burn down the manor and kill the family. I LOVE CVIII's witchhunting sorta backstory, and I loved the idea of using it like that, but I thought if the Belmonts were so close to Mathias, then why not kill him earlier. I guess I could change to Mathias moving to Transylvania and using the townspeople to take the Belmonts out for him.
I wrote Coller like that to give his unused story arch in CV64 it's purpose, like why Coller would fight against Drac. He still loves Sonia, and will attempt to hurt Drac any way he can to right the wrong he did back in this story. I know we never got Coller's backstory besides speculation of him being an experiment by Drac, similar to the lizardman in Castle Center, but I wanted to incorporate some unuesed material here, and I'm a huge fan of Coller's design and the mystery behind what he might've been.
If you guys took the time to read, let me know what you think. I know it still needs some work, and it wasn't presented nearly as well as other fanfics on here, but hey, I'm not a grwat story teller without my voice ;D

If you want to implement Coller into your version of Legends, he'd have to ditch the shotgun and chainsaw arm to be more believable. Are you okay with that?
Anyway, though the story has pretty neat ideas, particularly Mathias turning the people against the Belmonts, it doesn't seem to be structured with regards to a game's flow that well. Sure, it'd work on its own or as a film/animation's story, but not that well for a game's narrative structure IMO, especially if said game is a classicvania. If you want to work it in as it is, it'd need too many cutscenes which might end up breaking up the game's flow, I think.

Oh yeah definitely would ditch Collers shotgun and chainsaw. I forgot to mention that lol. I pictured him looking like his conept art, the indiana jones like hat but with normal hands, and he gets that once the 64 games would've commenced.
And yeah, that was something I noticed while starting it a few months ago, I typed it out like a film screenplay with a three act structure. I'm wanna be a film major so I'm kind of cursed with that lol, but yeah, I knew there'd have to be quite a few cutscenes, especially for the bits of College and Sonia travelling so that their relationship didn't feel rushed and them having a baby could be more believable, not just "Hey, let's bone" cus that stuff bugs me when writers think it's good chemistry to do it that rushed.
But yeah, the only bit where the townspeople against the Belmonts comes into play would be the stage where Sonia breaks in and fights the guards. I thought I'd make that minimal cus I wasn't sure how a CV game where fighting ppl instead of monsters would be handeled for gameplay.
But thanks a lot, man! Still look forward to developing this a bit further. I also made a Sonia sprite in my free time, a recolor of her ending animation. Walking looks jerky so I'd have to fix that. Not too skilled with Game Maker lol
