Title: Looking at HoD, I think only a few things may have been needed to improve it
Post by: SubstituteBelmont on December 20, 2015, 09:03:55 AM
I really wish they put more effort into HoD, so much potential.

I think only a few things would have been needed to make it last longer to be honest:

-PC/Steam release, to ensure a strong online community, text chat etc.

-Full on Custom mode, I'm talking designing your own castles, creating own characters from accessories picked up and even music composition

-Linked to PC release, but increase in number of player characters on a map, perhaps 8?

-Quest system for certain items and little easter eggs

Something like this really would have been incredible: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTTGkHvfLqw (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTTGkHvfLqw)

Do you think little/big changes like this would have been enough to save the game? From the little I've seen and played, it honestly doesn't seem terrible, but I honestly think a good idea was wasted here.

Those are some very cool ideas. I definitely think custom characters and castles would have been spiffy.

All the rest you mentioned is nice, but this specific point would be unfeasible. Castlevania is FAR from being as simple as a Mario game, so a software built into the game to create your own castles would take way too long to develop.

But I think this game could've been improved on much more than portability. The sprites themselves have issues with animations being choppy, or frames completelly missing. The issues with this game are too many to simply "fix". The thing has to be rebuilt from ground up.

HD may be fun, but it's not up to par with previous Vanias, I believe. It looks like there simply was not enough care on its development,

The whole game feels like Iga was rushed more than usual and wasn't able to uphold his usual standards. Given what we've since learned about how Konami operates, I think we can guess what happened.

Omg... Why doesn't this exist? Lol, thot it was good on PS3 but didn't like it a ton. These features would be incentive for tons of players to join in

Well, Custom levels are possible, but the specifics aren't simple.
Honestly this could see better light of day on PC as it's the go-to platform for online-play.
But if it were released, it'll have to come with modding tools, it's the only real way ensure a long lasting game out of HD as infinite possibilities are possible from there.
Just look at Doom, two decades later and still new mods available damn near daily.

Hell, I'd take a re-release on PSN to take all my 1000+ hours from PS3 over.

I like the ideas. Can't say I'm a fan of the create a character though. I like more choices. Make a few 3D Guys into sprites and I would again pour hours into maximizing them. Cornell and Leon are some honorable mentions.

I'd love Reinhardt Schneider (CV64 design), Carrie Fernandez, Johnny Morris, Eric Lecarde, Nathan Graves,

Quetzalcoatl. He has to be allowed that ONE. SUMMON.

Seriously, I'd have never finished the game without HYDRO LIGHTNING STORM!!

I've waited for that and it didn't happened sadly, it would sell a lot better and it would be easier to find people to play.

I believe something that could have improved it vastly would have been a 1p mode with different protagonists having their own quests.

Obviously HD used a zoom in/out option which was really cool when viewing the game itself as a live map. I can't help but feel this could have been applied to solo games to be played as a 1p game.

A while back someone started a thread about that guy who was trying to kickstart a Faxanadu release. Although that fell through his use of the 'widescreen' pan rather than humping rooms into blocks is an interesting device that could've been used for HD if a 1p mode had been introduced.

Honestly, I kind of wished that every time you started a mission from the main menu that the stage map would be randomly generated, Diablo style, forcing some exploration.

Increasing the drop rate for Shanoa's glyphs like 10,000% would be the greatest fix ever though-- I've been playing the game since it hit PS3, and not ONCE has a weapon glyph for Shanoa ever dropped from anything.

Then again, a Castleroid Diablo game would scratch that itch just as well.
