For instance, did you know that 2011 was hands down the Dungeon Forum's most active year? Or that 2006 was the worst (early days, awkwardness to be expected)? Or that the forum EXPLODED in size between the ends of '06 and '07? Or that I am one of the top topic-starters (I AM COMING FOR THAT TOP SPOT, JORGE!)?
There's all sorts of cool stuff in there that we don't often think about.
Head into the stats and have a look for yourself. (http://castlevaniadungeon.net/forums/index.php?action=stats)
It also reminds me of how much this place has changed, with a lot of my early content missing without a trace -- many posts and comments of mine from 2012 (my first year here) have survived, but much of it is gone entirely, lost to the goblins and badly-VA'd Chupacabras I can only assume lurk in the shadows and waiting patiently to feast upon untended text hosted on the server the forum inhabits, henceforth to be referred to as Servervania.
DAMN YOU SERVERVANIA GOBLINS. GIVE ME MY POSTS BACK.
The main website (http://castlevaniadungeon.net/dungeon.html), of course, now closely resembles Detroit. Or the Wasteland from Fallout. But mostly Detroit. You know: broken down, ramshackle, hasn't seen a renovation or an update in years (since I joined, in fact. I SWEAR THIS WAS NOT MY FAULT GUYS). Lots of stuff is broken, with bits and pieces of former glory visible everywhere, but don't touch any of it or the facade falls apart. Speaking of which, I really miss that robust as hell multimedia page (http://www.castlevaniadungeon.net/media.html). Everything from there is gone now, the backend Jorge and Kurt used for hosting having long vanished -- hell, even Kurt's vanished. When did he last log in? When Dracula was impaling Turks?
All joking aside, the forum stats tell a great story. Consider that this forum has now made it ten years, and it's just as robust a community as it's ever been; numbers don't lie, and 2016 is starting off with some strong ones.
I think that calls for a celebratory drink.
Just don't smash your wine glass while asking about what a man is.
Happy Tenth, Castlevania Dungeon Forums.
May the best years continue to be ahead of you!

Very cool, thanks for the stats :D

Happy Tenth anniversary eh? The Dungeon's been around for at least twice that length of time. I'd say a happy 20th+ anniversary is in order. :)

True, but I was referring specifically to THIS incarnation of the forum.
I'm fully aware of the now-defunct older version, but that was hosted elsewhere so this forum's records don't go that far back.

Definitely not 20 years old yet. The first iteration of the main site came out about around '98.

I wonder if the stats for the old forum are still squirreled away in some server archive.
-
squirreled
That's funny to me. I'm going to start using that ;D

Bits & pieces of it most likely still exist on the internet somewhere. But 98'? I'm pretty sure I've seen this site as early as 97'... Could be wrong though.
-
To be sure, ask Jorge.

2006 master race. :P

Oh, boy. Interesting stats.
6th place topic starter? Thanks, man. More proof that I have no life. :P 162 topics. wow. But if those are stats for 10 years, it's not that much I guess, lol, since I've been here for around 12 years as far as I remember. I'm amazed Super Waffle is only 3rd place here with 210 topics. Seems more like 600.

I'm the seventh most respected. I respect that.

Forum started at about 1998, from what I recall.
It was the old Threaded board.
Then, it went to EZBoard.
Then it went on hiatus.
Then the Forumplanet version opened up, when the board became part of Gamespy. That's also when all the files migrated to Fileplanet.
Then, Gamespy started to go away, but we rode that Gamespy Train until they closed.
They helped us migrate the board to 'a version that still worked'.
Then, when that went, we opened up the Simple Machines version we're using now.
-
There you have it guys. The history of the forums from the source himself! ;)
crisis should have an award for being on all stat lists.
-
Can't believe I've spent the third longest time online here, even compared to the old timers. C'mon guys, you need to up your idling game. :V

Mein gott Jorge, the place is older than even I could have guessed.
I'm also gonna guess all the media that was hosted on FilePlanet is gone forever, eh?

Kurt-kun won't upload that stuff again because it's illegal. Nobody really cared about video game music downloads back then, but things have changed and nobody wants to deal with C&Ds over vidya music.

People respect me...? What a twist! lol (obviously joking, being 3rd more respected user doesn't mean nothing and I love you all *hugs*)

Speak for yourself lad, I almost downloaded the entirety of the soundtracks page back then! I still have those mp3s and wave files on my computer, and I listen to them occasionally.

lad
Lad, lol that's funny to me :)

I still have all my old music from Napster/ WinMx days on ext hd's.... Ah I miss the winamp golden era.

I think that he meant big companies more than users, like in "big companies didn't cared if we share teh musicz" lol

I kind of wished that the main site would be updated with SOMETHING just so it doesn't look abandoned to anyone who wanders in.
I dunno, maybe we could adapt some long thread discussions into editorial format and post it on the main page? I do that with my blog all the time (taking lengthy editorial-esque posts I make on social media and adapt them into a blog entry) and it's a good trick for keeping it active with interesting stuff. Maybe something like that could work here?
It would also save people from digging through threads looking for something they wanted/needed.
-
I remember Jorge saying more than a year ago in a thread that he would be happy to post interesting articles if we did it here and asked him to... BUT I can be remembering it wrong.
-
I'm working with Darkmoon Firelyte, one of the old timers from EZBoard, to update the page.
Progress is slow, though.

Ha, 1998, yeah...I remember those days. I was 13 & enamored with Alucard, so's I went looking for info on all previous CV incarnations. That's not to say that SOTN was my introduction to CV - I grew up with it because of my older brother & an innate love for vampires, gothic things & all things NES - just it was what really drew me back to the series after becoming discouraged by the difficulty level as a youngling. Anyway, I stumbled across this joint & have lurked ever since. Yep. Even started the original photo thread on the old file planet thingamajig. Yep. Yeh-hep.
