Title: Castlevania AOS Genya Arikado Hack [RELEASED]

Hello, after completing one of my personal dream hacks with my Hugh Baldwin hack release I decided to go to another dream hack that I have always wanted made but until now lacked the means to do it, and that is to make Genya Arikado (Alucard alter ego) a playable character within Aria of Sorrow!

Special thanks to the very talented sprite artist Julian Ordonez Paz for making me a Genya Arikado sprite sheet to match up with Soma.

There are a number of other changes as well such as elements from symphony of the night being carried over such as,
The Alastor Soul has been replaced with the fully leveled Sword Familiar
The Imp Soul has been replaced with the Demonl Familiar
The Flying Armor Soul has been replaced with the Faerie Familiar
The Devil Soul has been replaced with the stone Gargoyle/Demon Alucard form from SOTN
The Final Guard Soul has been replaced with the Alucard Shield
And
The Balmung sword has been replaced with a weaponized version of the Sword Familiar fully leveled

This hack works with the Castlevania Aria of Sorrow US version of the game, it also requires a IPS patcher

Never mind the shoulder, what the hell happened to his LEG in the third pic? That is clearly not healthy for any man, dhampir or otherwise. It looks like someone carved a tetris block out of his thigh!

I love the concept though and I always wondered how Arikado would have played as opposed to Alucard.

Why do you have the HD filter on?
If you're gonna showcase graphical hacks of GBA titles, please use the original resolution, at maybe 2x the size.

These filtered shots are gonna give people the wrong idea about the art quality, etc.

To answer your questions about the sprite quality these are all works in progress, the artist Julian merely released these as tests to show and is still currently working on polishing them up and I only showcased this hack to give you a bit of a preview of the type of hack I am working on, this is NOT the final version, and as far as the graphics filter, I left it on because thats how I play the game, I'll take some screenshots without the filter in a bit with the emulator capture shot.

Post has been updated at to top, no filters and shot in original gba resolution.

Think it's possible at all to place Hikaru Midorikawa's voice clips with Ryotaro Okiayu's to make it really feel like playing as Arikado? :P

Just kidding. That'd probably be REALLY hard to do. And in all seriousness, while the concept is cool, the sprites themselves look a bit wonky. The lack of a right arm in the first pic, but still seeing his shoulder, kinda makes it look like his arm is behind him and he's doing something like scratch his butt or pulling out a wedgie. The second screen just seems kinda strange, though it is mid-animation, and I'd rather see it in motion before really commenting on it.

The third one, though, is probably the strangest, being that it clearly looks like a custom sprite, and doesn't really mesh well with AoS' sprite quality. He's standing up to straight, and is lacking in any real power behind his attack. Also, he's got a bit of a duck-butt/pigeon-chest stance going on, similar to Johnny Bravo (http://www.sunsetcast.com/poster/10004135.jpg). I feel like maybe moving his upper chest to the right a pixel or two might help it a little.

Granted, these are test sprites, as you said. Still thought I'd give some feedback on it. That being said, it'd be cool to see some of it in motion whenever you progress that far.

The first sprite you mention is the same Arikado stance from the real AOS game, did you dislike Arikado's stance from the orginal AOS game?

Yeah those are the original sprites, mostly.
His stance in AoS is very weird.  Sort of something you'd see in KoF or Jojo's Bizarre Adventure.

Like this, but with a hand in the pocket or a hand obscured from the camera's view.

It's been a very long time since I've played any of the GBA Castlevania games, so you'll have to forgive me on that. But yes, I thought his original sprites were pretty bad, like most, if not all, of the NPCs in the GBAvanias (aside from CotM, since as far as I remember, pretty much everyone was on par with Nathan's sprites).

That being said, that doesn't mean the sprite can't be polished.

I actually like that stance.

The reason I didn't previously comment on it is because I was on a mobile device, I couldn't see the whole image if I scrolled across.

It could be polished but I like the stance as is, its as Jorge said earlier, his stance is something akin to the "to cool for school" type of stance popular in japanese culture like in King of Fighters.

His arm/hand is simply obscured and probably just in his pocket or out of view, its not all that weird once you think about it, I never considered it a problem at all.

I know that it's the typical cool-guy pose, and his hand is definitely in his pocket. All I'm doing is simply just offering my opinion, and if you don't wanna change it and think it looks fine as is, that's understandable and I respect that. I'm just saying that I think it's always looked awkward and looks like he has his hand inside the back of his pants rather than the side pocket.

Well here is a bit of news/updates concerning this hack, as of a few days ago I finally got the remaining sprites from Julian and replaced 95% of Soma's sprites with them and thus the hack is nearing completion.

One obstacle I ran into is that weirdly enough Aria of Sorrow for some odd reason separates all the weapon animations/sprites separately from Soma, the only weapons that are a part of soma's basic sprites and animation or the regular and short swords, all the other weapons have to be edited manually be me to match Genya Arikado since the arm itself is attatched to each individual weapon which is a pain lol.

Like say for instance your using a gun or whatever and when you use it soma's old arm is going to pop up simply because its a part of the gun sprites and thus has no bearing on replacing all of Soma's sprites.

Anyways, while editing these weapons I decided to edit the Ronginus spear to give it some characteristics from the Alucard Spear, here are some images with filter and without filter,

Well here is another bit of news, I decided to mess around with Soma's transformation powerup and thought it would be a good idea if it appeared as if Arikado was tapping into his original vampire side (Alucard) to transform and thus I changed his hair white and gave him a more sinister red aura, have a look.

Are you asking have a changed core gameplay elements and features to give him new abilities?

If so than sadly I am not advanced enough to hack this game in a manner to where I can give him new abilities Soma did not have.

I plan to give him some new things appearance wise to distinguish him from Soma such as his new transformation look and new Ronginus spear (both Alucard inspired) which I posted a pictures above, I'm going to do some more weapons edits and edit some other things to give it something new other than simply Genya sprites replacing Soma sprites and thats it. but as far as new gameplay features thats out of my expertise.

I'll be posting some more pictures of the edits to some of the weapons I'm making later, I'm even thinking about changing some of his familiars into the ones from SOTN, I just have to find a some good sprites for them on the net first.

Thanks, and yea its like you read my mind lol ;D, I thought it would be a great idea to replace one of the transformations with Alucard's gargoyle form from SOTN but I could not find a resized sprite for it online so I just gave up on it since resizing it made it look like crap, but since you have a version already the right size than I'll definitely add it to the game. ;)

EDIT

After checking the sprite you provided it is closer to the ideal size but is still a bit to big, think it can be resized down to 64 x 64?

sorry it has to be 64 x 64 since that is the exact size as the other transformation sprites, if its to big it won't fit correctly sadly.

Is there a way to make it 64 x 64 without removing what you have done with the wings?

I like what you have done with them and would like for it to stay.

Well I've been a bit busy but I managed to get the Faerie familiar from SOTN that you provided and replaced the flying armor with it, I'll post images later along with the new recolored Demon transformation.

But I ran into a problem with the devil familiar you sent me since its won't fit because its to big, its not showing up correctly in game.

- UPDATE -

Ok so this game is hack is kinda shaping up to be a quasi sotn sequel lol, play as a modern day Alucard (Genya Arikado) and it featuring these new elements from SOTN, first I replaced the demon transformation with his SOTN gargoyle/demon form and now here are some more nods to symphony of the night, I have replaced the flying armor soul with the Faerie Familiar and the Alastor soul with the Sword Familiar (fully leveled form), also thanks to FanOfDracula I was able to get a better palette to work with for the Demon transformation to give it a color akin to Dracula's own previous demon forms, so here are the images!

All I have left now is to replace the Balmung sword with a weapon version of the Sword Familiar and also replace the Imp with the Demon familiar from SOTN and I should be done with the hack assuming I don't get any more ideas for more SOTN related sprite edits.

No those are without filter, I made sure I turned ALL the filters off, but yes I did resize it to make them smaller but I also made sure to click the keep aspect ratio button so there was no quality loss between this and the original screen capture, after all there was no stretching  that would occur if I was trying to make it bigger for example, that is where blurry comes from with that type of resizing, but I instead made it smaller and kept the aspect ratio/quality intact.

Then again this was captured in 1600x900 display (my laptop resolution) so I resized it down to 640x360 so that could be the reason for some quality loss, but this is how it looked at 1600x900 only bigger as far as quality goes and I dislike using the GBA image capture since the images come out very small, but the filters are definitely off.

If it's difficult to see the pixel squares, it's filtered.  Maybe it's the renderer filtering it (switch from DirectDraw to something else, I know DirectDraw often blurs out the shots but it varies upon your graphics adapter), maybe it's a filter you aren't aware it's on, but it's definitely in your pics.

If it's difficult to see the pixel squares, it's filtered.  Maybe it's the renderer filtering it (switch from DirectDraw to something else, I know DirectDraw often blurs out the shots but it varies upon your graphics adapter), maybe it's a filter you aren't aware it's on, but it's definitely in your pics.

The render I use is Direct 3D9, and I have a picture in my previous post where i did not resize anything, I only captured it using the windows capture feature and then cut the gba borders and uploaded it directly to the web, it was also captured in visualboy windowed mode and was not in fullscreen.

Its weird because I uploaded the same images to romhacking.net forums and the members who where complaining about me not having filters off seemed ok with the new ones, guess you have a sharper eye then them, when I get back from work (I'm currently on lunch break) I will capture some images with a different render and also capture it using visualboyadvance screen capture and see if that is to your liking. ;)

Yes I do actually, I just checked my render and when I switched from Direct3D9 to OpenGL is also had some blurriness, but I found out that going to the Direct3D9 Render options that It had Filter: Bilinear ticked on, once I changed over to Filter: Nearest I noticed that the blurriness disappeared, so maybe that is where the mystery blurry images where coming from.

Here is a new image with Bilinear switched off and Nearest switch on and also its been shot within the visualboyadvance screen capture so its the native gba resolution,

Ok here are the final images I will be posting, after this I will release a gameplay video either later on today or tomorrow and then the hack will be released, these new changes are I changed the Final Guard soul to Alucard Shield, I changed the imp soul to the Devil Familiar, and I changed the Balmung weapon to the fully Leveled Sword Familiar, here are the images and enjoy.

Unfortunately the way I changed the pause menu pic in my previous hack using the LZ77 tool with the Hugh Baldwin hack doesn't work with Aria of Sorrow the same way and thus I was not able to change the pic, as for the dialogue I never knew how to change ingame dialogue within the game anyway, but if you know of a way I'd be more than happy to learn and add such features.

There aren't two genyas, I removed the other so its only one ingame.

If I can chip in here, you can do that with an any hex editor of your choice. All the text in Aria is saved as ASCII data inside the RAM, so you can simply open the ROM in the hex editor, and write on top of the text whatever you wish and it'll appear in the game.

Beware the text sizes, though. Everything you write must be more or less the size of what is already written, due to how the code for paragraphs is handled. I never discovered how to edit that. It basically reads like a period, but it's an hex command that, if you move around, screws all the rest.

Ok I will look into that, in the meantime I still am trying to figure out how to change the ingame portraits in AOS besides using Lz77.

And as far as what happened to other Genya he has just gone. ;)

I'm now working on some updates for the hack, for one I decided to edit the name and the description for the old souls that I replaced with the SOTN ones such as the sword familiar,alucard shield,demon familiar,and faerie familiar, and the Devil/Gargolye form.

I also changed the name of the Flame Demon soul to Hellfire and the Demon Lord soul to Dark Inferno.

Something else I plan to do is change the story of Aria of Sorrow, something along the lines of a "what if" type of story where Soma never showed up and Genya Arikado (Alucard) was forced to take action instead.

How about an alternate where Soma doesn't defeat Chaos and Alucard has to fight him?

Well as far as I'm concerned, if Soma never shows up or makes it to the Throne Room then Graham is runner up so he would face Chaos from my perspective.

Chaos could destroy Graham, then Arikado would have to fight Chaos. Since he has Dracula's Bloodline it could be argued he could enter the
Chaos Realm.

I'm open to ideas, and the reason why I think it would be possible for Arikado/Alucard to fight both Graham and Chaos is the fact that it has been hinted at in the continuity before that there is a possibility for Alucard to become the new Dark Lord even if he is not one of the candidates simply because he shares the blood of Dracula and also has been taught the Dark Arts from him as well, so its entirely possible that if Soma never showed up or something happened to Soma and Arikado started to intervene physically such as battling monsters and gathering souls that Graham would start to see him as a serious threat due to who Arikado in fact is.

Would you consider doing regular Alucard? Since the game is SOTN like anyway I think a hack to play as him would make sense. Anapan8 made a hack some years ago but it was pretty choppy and unfinished.

Yes I would do a regular Alucard hack, I actually asked for some sprites to be made here,

But no one answered my requests there, I then sent a message to my friend Jop and FanofDracula, Jop handled the sprites for my future Alucard hack (which is nearing completion) while FanofDracula agreed to make the sprites for the regular SOTN Alucard, the only problem is that FanOfDracula still hasn't gotten around to doing them, I talked to him a few months back and he said he got busy with other things and it would take longer than expected, I haven't heard from him since then.

But if you know anyone who can get a sprite sheet for me that matches up to soma's height and animation wise then I would definitely do it, but I don't feel comfortable asking Jop to take on another job like this since he has already done it twice for me.
