Title: NECA's Classic Video Game Simon Belmont
Post by: Danial on February 13, 2016, 05:22:29 PM
The toy company NECA has come up with an ingenious new line recently.  It started off as a fun kitschy SDCC exclusive, but it was so popular that it's blossomed into its own ongoing series of figures.  Basically they take a property they have the license to, and usually already have figures made of it.  Then they repaint those figures in a style that's reminiscent of old video games, most of which were on the NES.  (Here's a visual checklist of some of the previous figures to give you an idea of the line.  http://www.itsalltrue.net/?page_id=29975 (http://www.itsalltrue.net/?page_id=29975))

They've finally gotten around to doing a NES CV1 repaint of their Simon Belmont figure.  He comes with a repainted Bat and Flea Man, and in a collector friendly package that looks like a beat-up old NES box.  Personally, I'm hoping for a CV2 style repaint also.

And here's a link to a gallery where you can see the accessories, box, and even some of the other figures in the line.  I'm personally very excited for the Contra two-pack.

Man, I really, really don't care for that design.  I love the original figure, and I wouldn't mind them going with a classic color scheme, but the pixels just look terrible on the figure.  It's like two opposite styles being hamfisted together.  I'm glad it's a popular line, but it's not for me.

I am not fond of this repaint. The original looks better, imo.

Maybe it's only me but it looks like Simon decided on wearing Aztec warrior paint. Dracula better not resurrect now.

It seems they were trying to be creative, but the concept fell flat on its face. Simon's NES sprite has a completely different design than the artwork from the box cover (which I'm guessing this design is supposed to be based on), so you just end up with a bizarre fusion of the two.

For some reason Simon looks like some sort of creepy zombie.  Really creepy.  I wonder if they sell the original figure still?

Also on a more nitpicky note they mixed up Bill Rizer's and Lance Bean's hair; Bill is blonde hair and blue pants while Lance is black/dark brown hair with red pants.

Wow, this looks stupid. The figure was fine as it was.

He looks more like a Simon Wraith.

Also while I don't mind the colour scheme, the paintwork on the face is not pixelated enough and some of the paint looks kinda crappy. :/

You know what I would like, an 8-bit Simon Belmont Amiibo.
