Title: PC Master Race Dudebros, I require your advice
Post by: Lumi Kløvstad on February 26, 2016, 09:01:51 PM
So I am building a brand spankin new gaming PC from scratch (yes, still. Budget delays and all that fun) and it's getting all the toys, BUT, I'm waffling here. Do I buy a GTX 980 Ti now, or do y'all think I should put this off until Nvidia reveals their new Pascal goodness and see what they'll be replacing the Ti with?

Depends, when exactly are they going to reveal their new stuff?

Ya that honestly depends on your TV/monitor.  If you have, or are getting a 4K TV, I personally am waiting on the Pascal.  Otherwise, stick with a 980.

Pascal is formally being announced in April, but current estimates say the GTX 980 Ti replacement cards likely won't be available until VERY later 2016 or even 2017.

What resolution do you want to play at?

A GTX 960 is enough to play everything at 1080p (some at 1440p, and a few (Castlevania included) at 4k). It runs the Division at a solid 40 fps at 1080p Ultra, and it's $100 cheaper than the 970 making a solid $700-750 build very possible.

I have a GTX 950 with 3 GB of VRAM, a 2.6ghz processor, 4GB of DDR2 ram, and a 500GB HDD, running on a motherboard from 2006, and I can run Fallout 4 on high settings.

You don't always need the bestest gear.

Yeah well, there's a reason that the build is being called, in my trademark long winded style: "Das Übermensch Build -- "God is Dead", also sprach Zarathustra". I plan to name it Nietzsche under the router listings for short.

It is intended to punch among the best hardware out there, hence the name, and I'm quite happy with the particulars of the build. But, Nvidia's April press conference (at which they will be announcing the new Pascal cards) is practically around the corner, and I want to know if the 980 Ti is able to keep competitive for at least a year (given that estimates have been made that the new cards with be SIGNIFICANTLY improved).

I've designed a number of budget builds for others, so I absolutely know what can be done with little money, but this is not meant to be a budget box. This is meant to be so amazing your eyeballs bleed if you've been playing on a Xbox One or even a top-tier Alienware Alpha (which smokes any current console).

You're forgiven. I rather like my Xbox One (my PS4 can die in a fire as I hate this mofo of a system), so I only ever use PCMR as an attention getter.

Since you have that much money to expend, why not buy a 980 Ti now and resell it if Pascal came to be a lot better? We don't know if they will also announce something new that only this card can do, but if they do surely devs will try to use or shoehorn this as a feature in next games.

You want to wait until April? It all boils down to that.

Ohhohohohohohohohohohoho

What did my PS4 do to me?

This (https://enduringamaranth.wordpress.com/2015/12/09/what-the-hell-ps4/). I wrote that after the FIRST time (with Destiny) but it did it 4 more times after in a couple of months (two of those times claimed other mainstay games like ESO and Diablo III UEE). There's nothing wrong with the hardware which I have personally inspected AND had professionals look over, so I'm thinking it's just a shit OS that can't even properly track what it's got installed and straight up forgets.

My Xbox? Has been BEAUTIFUL. She's a perfect machine, and I'm pretty much in love. Does what I want when I want, asks before it does ANYTHING AT ALL that might affect how much money I spend, and is generally well behaved.

I even went so far as to re-buy ESO for Xbox. I regret nothing.

Add to that fact that I have manually disabled EVERY automatic upload/download/install feature my PS4 has and it continues to do all of them unless I have it yanked from a wall outlet and... well... I might be a little salty about it.

Sony has ensured I won't ever buy from them again -- they've completely blown their shot with this gen so hard I am forgetting any love I've ever shared with them since the PS2 (which was a LOT). They ignored the Vita and shot it in the foot over and over and they can't even get their marquee system to work properly.

So yeah. I'm not even mad bro. I'm way past that.

I'm furious.

And in that fire of burning hatred was forged an idea. Into this idea, I would pour everything; my anger at Sony, desire for control, and my WILL TO DOMINATE ALL GAMES.

ONE GAMING BOX TO RULE THEM ALL.

1. Try and see if anyone else has a similar experience with those particular games.
2. Check with some other games, this might very well be an isolated case.

I would, but I am well past "repair". I am replacing.
Why have something that is only mediocre when I can build something (which I enjoy doing) that smokes the thing that insulted me (which I also enjoy doing) and will play pretty much any game under the sun extremely well (which I LOVE)?

Trust me, this is happening.

This stopped being about the PS4 ages ago.

Now, I'm replacing my Tank with an Iron Man suit.

As much as I despise it, remember that console exclusivity will always be a thing. As anti-consumerist as it may be, it's simply the nature of competitive business.

I was going to write a brief thing, but it turned not so brief and so for now I will just say this:

System exclusivity is, by and large, functionally dead. It's not a problem.

If only Ys, Guilty Gear Xrd :R, and KoF XIV can announce PC releases they can take my money.

This isn't the 90's having 2 consoles is different than it was, since back then multiplats were a good times completely different.
So Far the Wii-U is the best console since it's the only console that went forward without sacrificing things like couch co-op.

I think you'll find this thread's spiritual successor (http://castlevaniadungeon.net/forums/index.php/topic,8490.0.html) quite interesting, Zudra.

Along with these (https://enduringamaranth.wordpress.com/2016/02/27/system-exclusivity-is-dead-and-i-kind-of-miss-it/) opinion (https://enduringamaranth.wordpress.com/2016/02/06/hey-heres-an-idea-game-industry/) pieces (https://enduringamaranth.wordpress.com/2016/01/01/who-saw-this-coming/) I've written this year.

I have a feeling we'll get on famously.
