Title: Short story contests
Post by: Belmontoya on March 16, 2016, 08:28:28 AM
We have music and Sprite contests that are a great part of the forum. I haven't participated in any but I love to see them.

So... Why not have short story contests as well? We have as many talented writers here as we have talented sprite artists and musicians.

I think this would be a great, fun thing. There ough to be awards for it as well just like the other contests.

What do you guys think? Who else would like to see this?

Sounds interesting. I've personally never written anything classified as a short story before. This would be good writing exercise for some people struggling with their story-telling capabilities. Who knows, it might help with mine too. Just gotta think of a short story...

Right on X.

We would create a topic like with the other contests.

That would help get the juices flowing.

Let's see if this idea gets dungeon approved.

That's an interesting idea. It's been some time since I've written fanfiction, given Wayward Son was completed in November, but I'm always up for supporting other fanfic writers :D

I might give this a bit of a go.  It's been probably about 13-14 years I last wrote any fanfiction.  I might use this as an excuse to get at least part of one of those story plot ideas written.  Should we do things such as set max lengths, etc?

Yeah!

Let's see what the moderators think and see if we can set up awards. I think we'll want to make guidelines like a topic, and a min/max word count.

Does it have to be based on CV?

Does it have to be based on CV?

I'm thinking that would be fitting.

But I was thinking like different cv related topics.

For example: write a short story from the perspective of a towns person during the events of Simons quest. Examples. This could be a short story about the towns person locking themselves in their house at night trying to survive the horrible night. Or it could be an account of a meeting with Simon. Or something else. Those are jIt's examples of how we could have topics that are clearly CB related but full of options for creativity.

I don't think we're thinking of the true potential this has.

We can now write stories about what the Master Librarian does when Alucard's not shopping, or what Dracula does while waiting in the throne room, or even a heartfelt story about why Schmoo loves ramen but theirs is a love that can never be because Schmoo has no hands/throat/stomach and can't eat it.

Shenanigans stories of legendary proportions are on the precipice of creation; I'm talking contests of Waffle-level fanfic shenanigans here, people.

Let's have the serious ones, but let's not forget to go absolutely and utterly mad now and then.

I approve of this idea, and would take part in the contests.

I've been doing this for quite a while at the page I'm an admin, and I can say people love these short stories about side characters involved with Castlevania.

Just writting about this already makes me want to write about something.

EDIT: Here's something I wrote LONG ago. Yes, it's badly written, but the thread got me pumped, so here it is.

Yeah!

I approve of this and might join in too. But it has been years since I last wrote fiction. I am rusty. haha.

Topics are to be listed and voted in a poll like what I use to do with the sprite contests.
I've been googling word counts and it seems 1,000 to 7,500 is common for a short story. Or we can just use a general >7,500 words.

As for the awards, which ones should we use? The same ones as the music awards?
Or something new? If so, someone needs to make them or this could be a theme for the next sprite contest.

What do you think Plot Twist? Would you be willing to whip up some award sprites for this? Or should we make a sprite contest out of it or something.

That would be cool if you have time. If not, maybe we could do an express 2 week sprite contest for the awards so we can have the Stoker's Dracula sprite contest be for April?

Since we've been talking about Stoker's Dracula, maybe for our first topic we could have it be about Quincey Morris? We could use it as an opportunity to flesh out his character as an official CV timeline protagonist. What do you guys think? This would make for an interesting exercise in merging ideas from Stoker's novel, and Castlevania-lore into something for fan wikia.

As I suggested in the sprite contest proposal, I plan to run the awards sprite contest in April alongside this short story contest, but the sprite contest will end earlier.

I am now asking for requests for the theme of this upcoming short story contest. I will make a poll after a few suggestions.

No idea, but I have an alternate canon fanfic in the works about Reinhardt Schneider named "House Belmont" and would love an excuse to submit it.

I humbly suggest a theme of "Alternate History" because I am... me.

So far the only themes that were posted are and my suggestion:
Quincey Morris
Alternate History
Point of view of a Castlevania lackey

I still need more topic proposals.

Since the awards contest will be for the whole month of April, I will just make the short story contest for May.
However, if the topic has already been decided before May arrives, feel free to start writing so that you guys can have more than enough time for proofreading/editing.

I have another idea.

There are often many years spanned between Castlevania games. The Belmont clan is a very powerful, useful force for good.

Write a strory about a mission that a Belmont might take between fighting the forces Dracula. What other enemy or scenario might be dire enough to warrant getting a Belmont involved?

Or if not fighting a battle, a story of another way a Belmont might pass their time. This opens it up to many possibilities as well.

Any era and any Belmont are fair game.

Themes so far:
Quincey Morris
Alternate History
Point of view of a Castlevania lackey

if not fighting a battle, a story of another way a Belmont might pass their time

Any more suggestions?

What if it wasn't Julia who rescued Trevor when he was seriously wounded during Curse of Darkness?

What if Soma were forced to accept the throne of the dark lord once more?

How does Alucard adapt to life in the modern era, upon his father's final defeat?

The origins, creation, and storage methods of Wallmeat.

Death's view on things written from his own perspective.

Accounts of what Wind did in his downtime as a ghost.

Brauner at an art show.

What if Dracula weren't evil, but the Belmonts wanted to slay him anyway?

I like this idea!

It reminds me of the play I wrote called Nocturne of Nosferatu. Let me sum it up quick!

It's a twist on the story of Dracula. Dracula is in fact a mortal man who suffers from porphyria. He believes drinking young blood can treat his symptoms, but he is never proven of being a murderer. His eccentric behavior, shocking appearance, rumors of drinking human blood and fear of walking in daylight cause Johnathan Harker and his group to become paranoid and superstitious. They seek Van Helsing (who believes his pseudoscience with dangerous conviction). He quickly declares the count a vampire.

Van Helsing leads the group on a downward spiral of paranoia that leads them to hunting and killing the Count. At the end of the play they stand trail against the youthful heir to the Counts estate. He bares a shocking resemblance to the count and only shows up after the count has been killed.

The group is found guilty of killing the count. They meet their fate. The mysterious young heir smiles with his sharpened white teeth.

That pretty much sums it up! It's a full play and I've been trying to get it produced at a theater. The scene where they kill the count is violent though. I think I need to tone that back and pitch it again.

The origins, creation, and storage methods of Wallmeat.
Simple, it's dry aged meat ;)

Death's view on things written from his own perspective.
He sees death plenty of death... He's got a lotta problems..

Accounts of what Wind did in his downtime as a ghost.
Probably chatted up the lady ghost in the bathroom at the Dark Academy.

Brauner at an art show.
Sees something he likes...
"I'll make you my masterpiece!"

It reminds me of the play I wrote called Nocturne of Nosferatu.
Flashbacks of Forgetting Sarah Marshal..
"Dracula musical!!! Wooooh!!"

These would fall under Alternate History

Alrighty, Current topics are:
Quincey Morris
Alternate History
Point of view of a Castlevania lackey/boss (not Dracula)
mission that a Belmont might take between fighting the forces Dracula
if not fighting a battle, a story of another way a Belmont might pass their time
Alucard adapting to the modern era
The origins, creation, and storage methods of Wallmeat
Accounts of what Wind did in his downtime as a ghost
Brauner at an art show

Poll's up time to vote!

Once the final theme is decided, I'll further clarify the rules with everyone before starting the proper contest page.

Even if you are not participating, what stories would you like to read most out of the given topics?

And the winning topic is: Point of view of a Castlevania lackey/boss (not Dracula)

I need you guys to agree on the word count and other rules.
Word count: 3500 to 6000
Language: English
Basic guidelines:
The story is more important than grammar, formatting, etc. But please try your best to make things readable and understandable aka proofread them or let someone help you with that.

Anything else?

Post it on the official contest forum post (will make it when no further questions remain)
So far, I was able to use 2000 words for a part of the Ricordanza translation and I think a post is capable of more words.
If it can't, then use two consecutive posts.

As for the formatting, use whatever the forum can provide.

Jorge increased the maximum character count to 10,000 a while back for that DAW info thread I made(or maybe it was 100,000, one of the two). Unless that's been backfilled to 2000 or something small, it should still be that large amount.
