Title: Links Awakening is awesome!
Post by: Crying Freeman on March 21, 2016, 02:25:31 AM
Looking for cheap games at GameStop so I picked up a download code for LA DX and wow... It's amazing so far! Besides Zelda 2 and ALTTP I haven't given the franchise much of a chance, but this one so far (beat the first dungeon) has great pacing and the action feels faster paced and more satisfying. Plus the humor is great (The sign before the Mysterious Forest, that Raccoon dude and Mario enemies for example). Like every other Zelda it's got great music and graphics too.

Link's Awakening was one of the last great 2D Zeldas to be made. The story is both very haunting and somewhat sad. And to date, I've not seen it so well executed in any other Zelda game.

Freeman I hear you, but honestly my friend, you need to play Alundra for the PSX. That is truly the best 2d Zelda game ever. I would go so far as to say it's a lot better than ALTTP, and this is coming from a huge Zelda fan.

Is LA the DX version?

I've heard of Alundra, and I've heard nothing but praise so I shall check it out further ;) and yes it's the DX version

I'm only at the second dungeon atm, so I have yet to see anything haunting or sad, but I'm curious to see it later on, cus so far it seems very light hearted and humorous. I've also been interested in Majoras Mask, outside of it being a Zeda game but because it does seem very unique and strong in its story. Watched my younger bro play it a lot back in the day, he never got far, but I'd love to try out the recent 3DS port once I beat LA

Once you wrap up link's awakening you need to pick up the minish cap for gba. Highly underrated and just as good, if not better than link's awakening!

Once you get around to dungeon six (The Face Shrine) then you'll start to notice the game take on a more sadder and haunting tone.

I wasn't a huge fan of Link's Awakening, honestly.  Not sure if the DX version would make much difference in that.

Like some people said, you should also play Alundra (and Brave Fencer Musashi) on PSX if you want a LoZ fix without playing the original games xD

The DX version is the definitive version. I think the original without the DX elements would have been a bit lacklustre tbh. Although at the time of release it was to ALTTP what MM was to OOT.

The DX version simply adds in an extra dungeon which will give the player a choice of color tunics upon completion; one being defense (blue) and the other being red (offense). You can also get these tunics via a bug if you hold onto either the Guardian Acorn (defense) or a Piece of the Power (offense) for a prolonged period of time. The game itself is fully colored as well and there's now a mouse in the game who runs a camera shop. But everything else is pretty much the same as it was on the game's first release.

I look at a boxed copy I have everyday, that copy has been beaten so many times over the years. It was also the last copy I ever saw of the game where I live, no one's ever turned one in to the local Play N Trade. Thanks to that PnT though, I have Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages (both GBC), both loose, both don't care, still must play.

Indeed about the ending of LA, though the best ending kind of makes you feel slightly better (no continues used, very small change), the overall atmosphere of the game takes a sadder twist towards the end of the game.

I didn't play any Zelda games until OOT so I don't have much experience with the top-down games (gotta get back into ALTTP), but when I got my Game Boy Color and LA DX when they came out, I was entranced and played that thing nearly to the end. There's a pretty bad glitch in the color dungeon where if you do some things out of order you can't proceed to the end, which is bogus. Still one of my favorite gaming experiences, though; I tried giving ALTTP a serious go about a year ago and it didn't grab me the same way.

I'd like to play LA DX again. I grabbed it on the 3DS. Think I'll make a save state before I do the color dungeon in case I glitch the game again.

I love Link's Awakening.  It's not my favorite Zelda, but it's up there.  It just has sooo much more content than most other Gameboy games from that era.  The soundtrack is great, and the graphics are perfect for the tiny Gameboy screen.  And it has atmosphere...so much atmosphere!

Unfortunately, I really feel the series went downhill after Link's Awakening.  I'm not trying to start up a flame war, but I never really cared for Ocarina of Time or Majora's Mask (yes, I've played through both).  I really loved A Link Between Worlds though.  It felt like a great return to form.  I definitely like the 2D Zeldas over the 3D ones.  But I could never get into the Capcom games (Oracle of Ages, Oracle of Seasons, and The Minish Cap).

My thinking exactly. Didn't care for Majora's Mask (don't like time crunches in and action adventure), but I have finished OoT several times before. Though it was okay I still feel it was a steep departure from what we knew
as Zelda.

It did in a way for me too. But personally it would have been better had the OoT elements (and cast) been left out of the game. It's like Shigeru Miyamoto has a hard-on for OoT. So much so that he has to have bits and pieces of it throughout every game he makes now. It's a bit intrusive IMO and kinda makes things feel cheap in a way that I can't really describe. A great Zelda title is one that stands on its own without purposely reusing previously said elements.

I'm surprised to hear this point of view because I personally felt LA felt a certain way which I can only explain as a certain ambiance which didn't particularly fit the way that I felt about Zelda as a series at the time.

After playing LA DX I thought it was nice, had a decent story but the one thing was that ALTTP wasn't a hard game and LA felt overly easy to me, like child's play, aside from
(click to show/hide)

OOT and ALTTP were always the backbone of the series for me. I never got into MM at the time and haven't since.
I thoroughly enjoyed MC and dare say it rivals ALTTP imo.

TP I also liked very much particularly in a narrative sense and SS has taken the crown for me thus far. I would be surprised if the Wii U Zelda could surpass it.

I think it's fantastic that there are some LA fans out there, however, who feel this way about it. I feel like if it had been a SNES title instead of a handheld it probably would have gotten more recognition and production than it did.

This I agree with about "used OOT parts".
Why when Link walks into a building (like in ALTTP) can there not just be a drop in BGM volume? Why the OOT house music? Just why?
Why is one of the OOT themes playing when YuGanon is bound by Hilda's magic?
I seriously did not appreciate that, specifically in this game being in the downfall timeline which has NOTHING to do with OOT. It just felt like putting meat into a falafel kebab...

Aside from this ALBW was a decent game, but the dual worlds aspect (although obviously it was going to be in the game) has been done to death. Imho there should've been provision to enter Lorule's Sacred realm/ Dark World also. The triple stack of worlds would have set it apart from the other games and not in an iconic sense, have been left in ALTTP's shadow.

Watched some IGN video about the game... They spoiled the fucking ending twist lol. It wasn't even a review. Still addicted to the game, probably the most enjoyable Zelda I've played so far.

Couldn't agree more about the Oracle games. To me they just felt like they were trying waaaay too hard to make another links awakening. Now the Minish Cap on the other hand I thought was one of the best since links awakening. I MO it combined all the goods from classic Zeldas and the 3d games as well. pretty long game too.

I really want to go back and play all three of those again, especially the Oracle games.  I'm all about second chances (and sometimes 3rd and 4th chances) when it comes to retro games.  It took me at least four attempts, starting from scratch each time, to play through Ocarina of Time before I finally finished it.

LA is good, but it definitely hasn't aged as well as the OoX games, imo.  The constant messages when you walk into an object and don't have the right item equipped, for example, drag it down a little.

MC is excellent.

The Oracle games did a very very good job with their item ingenuity, though.
And the link-up system to connect the games via a Password was pretty well-implemented.

That stuff did annoy me tbh. I remember playing OoA a long ass time ago and found it fun as well! I'd like to try both Oracle games out again after I beat LA

It was. Definitely. I just wish we could have gotten the third game with the Oracle of Secrets. I'm still wondering how that game would have turned out, what new land we would be exploring, and what new map mechanism would be implemented aside from season changes and time travel.
