Title: Prince dead at 57
Post by: Belmontoya on April 21, 2016, 03:15:12 PM
It's raining purple rain in downtown Minneapolis today my friends.

Prince has died in his studio. He had been very sick with the flu for the last few weeks. Not sure yet what actually caused his death.

He was one of my biggest influences and inspired me as a musician in Minneapolis. His legacy is everywhere you look here.

I will miss him greatly and forever regret missing his last concert here.

Listened to a lot of Prince growing up, as a kid I found him a tad weird, but that was his style, and his music was never weird. As I got older, I learned what he dressed like was his image, an image no one could copy successfully.

I grew up listening to him and still followed him. His last 2 albums were very good. He was a guitar god as well.

I was very inspired by him to blend styles of music like rock, funk, electronic, and hip hop.

My band used to frequently play in his night club called the Quest. He decorated the whole place In an Ancient Greek style. It was so cool.

And whenever I performed on the mainstage at 1st Ave Prince and the purple rain movie were all I could think about.

For any local musician in MN Prince really was like Royalty.

I know people who knew him, worked with him and have stories about him. I even work with a guy that went to high school with him.

My favorite story is when my friend saw Prince handing out jehovas witness pamphlets in a cub foods parking lot.

He was all over the place and he was always being whacky Prince.

He had a big impact on me and I'm going to miss him a lot. ????

This year is just getting ridiculous.  As friends pointed out this evening before we started playing Shadowrun, this year is like it's being written by George R.R. Martin.  Too many greats gone.

I had a few CDs years back. Just watched Purple Rain and teared up when "I Would Die 4 U" played, which was my favorite track of his. I guess First Ave's doing an all-night dance party till like 7 in the morning. I'd probably go if my girlfriend didn't work and if I danced. :p

I had heard that someone died but I didn't think it was Prince. Never really knew a whole lot about him. The first time Prince became known to me was through Tim Berton's 1989 movie Batman.

I have friends down at 1st Ave. I was close to there earlier today but I gotta stay home and get the kiddo to sleep.

It's been a rough night.

I've been watching some of the live feed of the 1st Ave tribute. The 35w bridge is all purple too..

I wonder if any of his old band mates are down there. I met his old drummer Michael Bland. The guy is amazing on the drums. I know they have a live band down there. But I couldn't make anyone out.

Abnormal Freak are you from MN too?

I thought I was the only one around here!

I always feel kinda shitty posting my tribute songs, but I'd feel even shitter if I didn't at least put them out there.

Really bummed on this one. Losing way too many of the greats this year.  :-\

One of those suburbs within arm's reach. Been here my whole life (I'm 30). Went to shows at First Ave a lot in my teens but I haven't been there since. Missed a lot of 'em too because of the 21+ restriction, which I'm sure I could have avoided had I been determined enough. But when you're driving 45 minutes and paying for parking just to find out, it didn't seem worth it to me.

Same here man. I grew up in Elk River but now I live in Big Lake right on the lake.

I went to 1st Ave a lot too. My band used to play there a lot and I got in to a lot of 21+ shows that way.  Last time I was there was I performed with my brothers band on the main stage.

I drove by this morning and there are still people out there. There are purple lights all over the city.
