Title: Super Castlevania IV editor in the works....
Post by: MooMilk on May 08, 2016, 12:01:55 PM
It's called CV4ED and it's being developed by a guy called "RedGuy" He figured out the compression and uncompressed it and found some of the level data. He can only edit the first level of the game but the guy sounds like he knows what he's doing. Here's some images.

I wander if this is the guy who was working on a more realistic color iteration of Super Castlevania IV all those years ago, but stopped before he could really get into it. It was a shame as I was looking forward to playing that one.

The guy posted a update at rhdn. He got all the levels to load. He thinks he might have to just uncompress the rom and leave it that way, instead of recompressing it.

Image of the sprites uncompressed. You can make out a raven and the Spiny like enemy. Nice!

I used the editor to make a font restoring the HUD from CV1.

Sadly, the text and numbers were almost exactly the same shape. The just had a bit of shading on them. I mostly just had to edit the palette. I'm gonna do one with the CV 3 font tommorrow. I was thinking of changing the end of the game font to the one used when you beat cv1 but I'm not sure if that's a complete font or not. It's not really important anyway.

 :o  Oooooooo...

I'm interested in seeing what comes up for the cave.  Due to certain details in the foreground arrangement near the drop I've long had a hunch the programmers originally meant for the path to split, but blocked it off to concentrate instead on the lower route until the X68000 project came up.

Huh. I never thought of that before, but I think that theory may hold water given how much influence can be seen from SCV4 in CVX68k.
I have a theory of my own that a bunch of the stages before the castle were rearranged last minute and were originally intended to be played in a more sensical order that didn't have a boss show up in the middle of several stages.
