I just found out there's a remake in the works for Wonder Boy 3: The Dragon's Trap. Details are a little scarce yet, so this might be too early to be a definite release (whatever happened to that Toki remake that was announced years ago?). But some of the preliminary screenshots look nice. If you've never played Wonder Boy 3, it's one of the earliest Metroid-style games. I know everybody has a different definition of what makes a Metroidvania, but in my mind, this one has it all. A big interconnected world with distinct areas, a sidescrolling viewpoint, and progression via new abilities. It even starts with a replay of the end of the previous game, just like SotN starting with the end of Rondo of Blood (not a requirement for a Metroidvania game, but cool nonetheless).
If you've never played Wonder Boy 3 and enjoy the SotN-style CVs, I highly recommend giving it a shot.

Out of the entire series, I always preferred Monster World IV. Sure it's hero is a cute little girl (she can handle her own pretty well too), but the world to explore isn't too big (though the dungeons can be pretty big with lots of platforming), and it's a beautiful game to behold, with excellent music.
It's also heavily puzzle based, memorization of the puzzles help.

Monster World IV is better and more challenging but WBIII was great too.

Monster World IV never made it to the USA (officially), right?
