Resident Evil VII was announced at E3, and it actually looks scary (and very much like Outlast), and it will be VR compatible. There's supposedly a demo out now for PS+ subscribers, but I can't find it anywhere.
EDIT: Demo thoughts
So after playing through the PS+ "Beginning Hour" demo, I can say firstly that the demo is beyond short. Like you-can-beat-it-in-less-than-20-minutes short. The atmosphere is excellent, and I found myself actually dreading going forward, and I even jumped and cried out in a couple parts.
But the game just feels like another Outlast, or another Amnesia, or Slender. It doesn't look, feel, or even remotely resemble a Resident Evil game. It's just another first-person walking simulator. And for a mainline Resident Evil game (for $60, no less), that's just not okay.
It's worth mentioning in the menu you can turn on/off both a crosshair and an ammo count, so it's safe to assume that unlike those other generic first-person horror games, gunplay will be a thing, and I'm really hoping that once that's introduced, it'll be more than the walking simulator it is.
Also, not digging the silent protagonist route.

RE'S GOING BACK TO WHAT MADE RE GREAT I CAN'T WAIT
-
I was going ballistic on my seat all through the conference.
-
I do have to say that while I will wait to play it before judging it (the demo is supposed to go live tonight), I'm just really disappointed in what I see. Yeah, I'm glad it went back to horror, but... It just looks like another generic first-person horror game. It resembles RE even less than the last few games we had, and I'm sure that the story that RE5, 6, and Revelations 2 spent building up will NOT be explored in this game. It's quite literally the first RE game I've ever seen where I just went "Meh..." after watching it. And I got giddy over Operation Raccoon City and Umbrella Corps.
Again, I'll wait to play it before making that judgment fully, and I'll still likely grab it day one because RE is my favorite game franchise. But right now, I'm extremely underwhelmed.
-
At least it looks like they've completely abandoned continuing off of this. (http://abicion.tumblr.com/post/116271764167/in-all-of-their-diehard-effort-to-make-ada-wong)

Capcom FINALLY gives us survival horror in one hand and slaps us with the other by having it be first person...
-
The demo is now live on PSN for PS+ users. 2.9GB.
It's... alright. It really just feels like another generic first-person horror game.
-
Dat Trailer, looks like someone looked at P.T. and said, "Y'know what, we got this shit!"
Makes me excited,
Everything looks nice,
Going back to the roots and all...
After all the bad Sequels, all the shit.
Many thanks for listening to you fans, Capcom.
About that listening part...
Now, this may sound like a broken record...
Xcited to see a good RE, but what I really want to see is in the first letters in caps.
-
To be fair, this is even further from Resident Evil than RE6 was. The game doesn't resemble Resident Evil at all outside of the title and the interface on the main menu.
Also, I updated the first post with my thoughts on the demo so people have a good idea of what to expect out of it.
-
I can see why they're going down this road, VR optional and all. It looks like a decent game from the demo but I'm not wowed by the graphics.
-

So this will be like Resident Evil Survivor, mmm this is the 3rd i think, i like that game, better the others but i enjoyed a lot survivor, hope it act like that but fixing the problems they have.
-
I find myself wondering how quick people will be to jump on it considering it functionally is the same as the fangasm P.T. was--or how much of the criticism will stem from a place of "crapcom doesn't know how to make something good, wah it's bad by association."
I think I'll wait until later in its development and more is seen before I actually weigh in on it at length. So far, though, it does lend the impression the series is going back to its horror roots, and I'm all in favor of that. But there's not really much here for me to go on aside from that, so I don't really want to draw conclusions and make assumptions this early on.

Fifth actually. There were already four Survivor games (Survivor, Survivor 2: Code Veronica, Dino Stalker, and Dead Aim). I think I would be significantly more accepting of the game if it were another Survivor game.

I think it's largely the realistic horror that kinda bugs me. Resident Evil, ever since the beginning, has never taken itself too seriously. It's way too early to judge it, but from what I've seen of both the trailer and the demo, there doesn't seem to be any semblance of the sci-fi roots of the series. And RE has always been largely sci-fi, science playing a HUGE role in the entire franchise (even in games like Gaiden and Outbreak). Again, though, it's way too early to judge that.
Capcom IS going for a "clean slate" on RE here, I'm just worried that they're straying a bit too far from what makes RE an RE game. I will try and judge the game based on its own merits though, as I did enjoy the atmosphere of the demo (as well as the fact that it's not even close to as clunky as most of these first-person horror games).
EDIT: Also, due to that fact that I'm 100% sure they're ditching the storyline they've been building up the last few games, it was a real kick in the teeth ending the demo with the line, "Welcome to the family." and "The family is expecting you." What with the villains of RE6 being named "The Family", and also a group that was never dismantled, just feels really sour to me.
EDIT 2: The game's full title is Resident Evil VII: Biohazard, and the Japanese title is confirmed as Biohazard 7: Resident Evil. I don't know why Resident Evil VII and Biohazard 7 alone weren't good enough.
-
I generally don't like first person view games. So I'm pretty meh about this.
I'd be happier with an actual new RE game that somehow resembles the first 3.

Same, also going for Kojima's new game, it's so early in production it doesn't even have an engine...

I'd ideally love to see modern-gen remakes of all three in one game, considering they all take place at roughly the same time.
Kinda like how RE6 was a bit of a smorgasbord of everyone's stories playing into each other.
But this would be a massive undertaking and remains nothing more than a pipe dream at the moment.

Well, I've gotten quite a bit of faith back in the game. Only the viewpoint was inspired by games like Outlast or Amnesia (http://www.polygon.com/e3/2016/6/15/11940734/resident-evil-7-biohazard-e3-2016). The rest of the game, however, is retaining its Resident Evil roots. The director stated that while those games were great experiences, he felt "frustrated" by the inability to defend yourself.
Healing items like herbs will still be in the game, as well as weaponry for the player to fight with. Presumably both melee weapons and firearms (you can obtain an axe in the demo to swing around, and the options menu has display options for ammo count and an aiming reticule).
As well, the demo is not part of the full game. They created a new segment to not spoil the content of the main title. You'll also be playing as a brand new protagonist, as they felt like heroes like Chris or Leon are far too hardened for the game to be scary. There's also an $80 deluxe edition that comes with more story content. (http://screenrant.com/resident-evil-7-combat-survival-horror/) Despite my iffyness on the game, I'm still probably gonna buy that against my better judgment.
-
Moving away from the usual cast is probably for the best, all things considered.
Leon and Chris might be hardened badasses now, but when STARS was only just first being jumped by zombie dogs and Leon was fresh out of the academy you had that fear level work due to character inexperience. It just wouldn't sell the horror return as well to run with any of the familiar faces at this point, unless it was to continue that branch of the franchise story.
-
I'm just bummed about it with all the story build up over the last few games. We've gone from the death of Wesker, to the tease of Alex Wesker finding the key to immortality, to the destruction of Terragrigia and the mysterious group Jessica is working for, to the introduction of Wesker's son, to the introduction of The Family, and the rebirth of Alex Wesker set up as a new recurring villain.
The series was going a direction that was setting us up for something pretty epic with a Wesker vs. Wesker scenario that was going to be a bit more personal for a lot of the cast, due to the ties several characters share with both Jake and Natalia. This kinda story would've really worked in another action-packed RE game, but I suppose we'll need to wait for Resident Evil 8 or Revelations 3 before getting it.
I just really liked where the series was going gameplay and tone-wise with Revelations 2. Was hoping that's what we were gonna be getting with RE7.
-
It's still possible--just because the main player character isn't a Redfield or Kennedy or Valentine doesn't necessarily mean no one from the series cast will be present--could just be a new character being introduced into the post-RE6 world, for all we know.
-
It is still possible, it'd just be really jarring for them to bring a whole Wesker vs. Wesker scenario into this game. It completely goes against the tone of this game (due to this game's dramatically different tone from the rest of the series). Pretty much I said we'd have to wait until RE8 or Revelations 3 to see if we'll continue that storyline.
I mean, I hate the tonal change in this game. But changing the tone back midway through the game would be even worse.

I feel so bad for our new protagonist if he gets caught up in the lives of Leon and Chris.
-
Maybe this new protag will finally be the one to look at Leon and Ada and go "will you two just fuck already and get it over with?!"
-
To be fair, Damnation hinted at Leon and Ada already doing so, with Ada remarking to Leon with, "When are we going to carry on from where we left off that night?" (paraphrased)
It was basically confirmed in an interview on the Damnation DVD where the film's screenwriter Shotaro Suga stated that the two had a romantic liaison following the events of Resident Evil 4.
-
Green herbs are coming back for RE7. (http://www.pcgamer.com/resident-evil-7-teases-green-herbs-and-the-possibility-of-in-game-vendors/?utm_content=buffer65f4b&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook&utm_campaign=buffer_pcgamerfb)
...Uh. Yay?
Also, a new merchant might be in the game, with some form of currency being teased.
-
I liked the merchant from RE4. A mysterious hooded figure everywhere you go and sellin' awesome shit. Whether or not you could afford all those good guns was another thing.
-

After turning down the President's daughter he'd better shag Ada.

Already said it, but this already happened off-screen. It was hinted at in the Damnation film and confirmed in the DVD's extras.

Good for Leon.

I think he'd had more than enough of Ashley screaming his name by that point.

Touche. Yet it seems she hadn't had her fill of him yelling "get down".

Resident Evil 7 will be completely forgoing cutscenes (http://www.relyonhorror.com/latest-news/resident-evil-7-will-have-no-cutscenes-vr-being-re-worked-after-negative-e3-feedback/), which is a stark contrast to RE6, which had over four hours worth of cutscenes. Like games like Half-Life or Outlast (HEY LOOK ANOTHER OUTLAST COMPARISON), you will have complete control over your character at all times, seeing the game completely from their view. Now let's just hope our protagonist isn't a silent protagonist cuz that'll be fuckin' boring.
On another note, they also received a lot of negative feedback about the game's VR mode at E3, with people calling it "nauseating". Capcom has taken note of this and is completely reworking the VR system.

That's a very good thing. Capcom could get into a lot of trouble (and not just sales' wise) if they don't address such issues.

Exactly. Right now, the VR peripheral is a HUGE selling point for this game. I've seen several people online state they're going out of their way to get PSVR specifically for this game. If it's biggest selling point, the VR, wasn't working, that would be horribly detrimental to this game both critically and commercially.
Right now, though, all I want is for them to reveal some actual info about this game. With Gamescom coming up, I'm hoping we'll actually get some decent gameplay videos and maybe a trailer that actually shows off bits of the game's plot. Maybe some info on our new protagonist would be nice.
-
New in-game screenshots were released on the Resident Evil Facebook page. (https://www.facebook.com/residentevil/photos/?tab=album&album_id=1224311060923112) I'm not sure whether you need to log in or not to see them. The game's graphics are noticeably a lot nicer than the original demo's, and a shotgun was confirmed as a usable weapon (which brings the weapon roster up to a hatchet and shotgun). Still doesn't really look like RE, but it looks a lot nicer than its original reveal.
Scratch that, a whole new blog post was posted on Capcom Unity (http://www.capcom-unity.com/capkel/blog/2016/08/17/new-found-footage-surfaces-for-resident-evil-7-biohazard), showcasing a new trailer and details about the game.
-
I must say RE VII is looking magnificent.
-
ESRB has rating the game M for Mature. Summary reveals details about the game previously unknown. (http://www.gamespot.com/articles/resident-evil-7-weapons-story-details-confirmed-by/1100-6443066/)
-You'll have access to quite the arsenal of weapons, similarly to all RE games. These include pistols, shotguns, flamethrowers, explosives, and chainsaws.
-Heavy graphic violence is to be featured. Dismemberment is back, and likely in full-force for the first time since RE4 (after RE5 and RE6 were heavily censored in the gore department). These include a sequence of your protagonist receiving a shovel through the face and an area full of disemboweled corpses.
-Strong language will be featured in the game. Not surprising, considering language has become stronger since RE4 and notably in RE5.
-The protagonist is named Ethan, who has come to the dilapidated mansion searching for his wife (who is likely the woman running from the creature in the Lantern demo). There is a cult-like family that shares a sorted past.
We'll likely receive more info during TGS, or late September when Capcom reveals the purpose of the Dummy Finger.
-
I wonder if you can hold a lot more then the standard 3x3 item menu. I wish they would bring back the RE4 weapons case at least that had more item storage.

The inventory in the Beginning Hour demo was eight spaces. Two down, four across. And then you have four equipment slots, each assigned to a D-Pad direction. I'm guessing this is what they're going to be using. Some items actually take more than one slot, like the bolt cutters took up two slots.
I'm guessing we're keeping the eight spaces like in the demo, with the option of getting a side-pack later like in classic REs. One thing worth mentioning is that the protagonist in the demo was just an ordinary guy, and Ethan will likely be the same. Just regular clothes. No gun belts or belt pouches, etc. The way they're handling it currently works for a guy who just tries to fit everything in his pockets and stuff.
-
Yeah, Capcom is reeeeeeally not showing off much about this game. Their latest news shows off the pre-order bonuses, which is just a bunch of booster packs to kick off your playthrough (which I will no doubt not even use). But they did, however, confirm that there will be no microtransactions. So that's good.
See below image for source.

TGS 2016 trailer! And... wow. Color me impressed. This game actually looks REALLY good!
Also, the Deluxe Edition received an update, in that another story episode is being included with it. However, the price is now $90 USD rather than $80. However, those who pre-ordered it at the lower price received an upgrade for free.
Also, the Beginning Hour teaser is receiving an update tomorrow, which will make the demo available for all PS4 owners.
-
That trailer looks like something from 'The Hills Have Eyes'.
-
MASSIVE info leak of Resident Evil 7 (http://www.relyonhorror.com/latest-news/rumor-resident-evil-7-info-leaks-multiple-endings-returning-characters-and-spoilers/). It's all still rumors so take it with a grain of salt, but apparently some of this stuff has already been confirmed. And obviously, spoilers abound.
-
That trailer looks like something from 'The Hills Have Eyes'.
Or Texas Chainsaw Massacre and House of 1000 corpses.
Bottom line is that the trailer looked like something out of one of those b rated slasher films about a crazy family having you trapped and trying to kill you, not liking that kind of a vibe within the Resident Evil series.
I would much rather have Biohazard mutated/mindless/instinct driven monsters back.
-
not liking that kind of a vibe within the Resident Evil series.
Yeah I'm not either. I got kinda turned off from that trailer.

New videos from Resident Evil 7. Titled "The World of Resident Evil 7", they appear to be a video series that will show off small tidbits of the games. Only two videos out so far, I'll most more as they release.
Volume 1: Mysterious Caller: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uesYHntkdn0) Showcases Ethan answering a phone ringing, and a voice on the other end leaving a cryptic message.
Volume 2: Shotgun in the Box: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tIC7vd_lPY) Showcases Ethan opening an item boxes and retrieving and equipping a shotgun.
Also worth mentioning is that in the second video, even if a two-slot item is placed in your quick select slots, they will still take up more than one slot (the shotgun in the video goes down into the first item row).
-
Two more volumes from The World of Resident Evil 7, showcasing more bits about the game.
Volume 3: Recorder: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oxW4eBdRF_I&feature=youtu.be) Showcases the game's saving system is at save points which are tape recorders. Whether or not they brought back limited saves remains to be seen.
Volume 4: Stock Up: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-whnhK8IxU&feature=youtu.be) Showcases two more functions of the pocket knife you get. You can smash wooden crates with it (a la RE4-6), as well as cut tape that would otherwise hold something shut. The knife has more uses than simply being a weapon.
-
Two new volumes from The World of Resident Evil 7 are out.
Volume 5: Survival (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLDWt4ihlbI): Showcases the game's healing system, and that combining herbs still exists. Ethan's health is monitored by both a screen filter and his watch (the former of which I believe can be turned off in the options menu).
Volume 6: Immortal (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HrsFgTtoGjU): Showcases some combat against Jack Baker, aka Family Man. Showcases that Jack is seemingly immortal and cannot be killed by regular means, making him similar to Nemesis (add to the fact that he busts through walls after you, and it's a decent comparison).
The game really is starting to slowly come together. I hope they show off or at least tease one of the boss fights.
-
So the game's finally out. Anyone have a chance to play it yet? I picked my copy up at 9PM on the 23, got about 3 hours in.
The game is a hell of a lot of fun. It really feels like a modern version of the original games, and I absolutely love it. It's legitimately scary again, item and resource management is back, conserving ammo and knowing when and when not to fight is important again. I'm in love with RE all over again.
Anyone else got the chance to try it out yet?
