Title: AM2R - First Complete Version Out!
Post by: squaretex on August 07, 2016, 09:35:57 PM
I find it somewhat disturbing that a website dedicated to one half of the "MetroidVania" formula doesn't have a thread yet for a fan's upgrade of a classic from the other side of the tracks.

So I'll fix that now. ;)

AM2R - Another Metroid 2 Remake - takes the old Gameboy title and gives it the grand Zero Mission treatment. Graphics, music, control...it's all been enhanced. And just like MZM, there's a little more to Planet SR388 than you remember...

From my own personal experience, and witnessing others' let's-play encounters...it's definitely something special. I can understand when it was back in the day how this would be "just another Metroid 2 remake." But now, I think it would better be called TM2R...THE Metroid 2 Remake. :D

I haven't played it yet, cuz I wanted to play the original Metroid II first so I could appreciate it more. I did download it already though, just in case Nintendo brings the C&D hammer down on it.

A wise decision indeed...although with Metroid being treated as the red-headed stepchild (NO OFFENSE INTENDED!!!) we'd have to wonder if they'd even bother.

Thanks for the heads up on this, I had actually forgotten about it since I was wrapped up in playing other games and finishing hacks, but this is great! now one of the fangames I have been waiting for has finally arrived, now all I have to wait for is Mega Man X Corruption and Castelvania Lecard Chronicles 2.

Welp. It was only a matter of time. (see attachment)

EDIT: Worth mentioning that it can still be downloaded from the post above. So grab it quick before that gets taken down too.

Best I can tell, it's still up at the "official" AM2R site. And it's torrented. Doubt it's simply gonna vanish overnight THIS time. :D

Yeah, I checked already and it still can be. But I'd still urge people to grab it as soon as they can. With how fast the Metroid Database mirror went down, it's only a matter of time before they go right for the source.

Already downloaded the game, but I also downloaded the torrent file just in case. Suck it, suits. :P

I played the previous release once before. However I got a little turned off from it due to the over-usage of item collecting via the speed booster, and having to run through way too many hoops just to succeed. Hopefully they seriously tone that shit down a bit. Super Metroid had the right amount of 'item via speedbooster' collecting. It went a little too far in Fusion and Zero Mission. I'll give this version a try and see if they haven't cleaned up their obsession. But yeah, it was only a matter of time till Nintendo sent out a C&D order. Although to be fair Nintendo doesn't have the right to talk since they seriously botched up Samus' character in Other M. If anything they should pay close attention to the fans as we seem to know more about the real Samus then they do.

Can someone upload the game to their dropbox and post it here so we can download it? The downloads are down, and I'm sad now.

EDIT: A friend uploaded it. Here's the link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/cp939m (https://www.dropbox.com/s/cp939m)s3x6m7l4y/AM2R_10.zip?dl=0

And here's quite possibly the best thing that can happen to AM2R right now...

THE PIRATE BAY HAS IT. :D

...I just don't know if I can give a TPB link in this forum... <;)

THIS DOES NOT RUN ON WINDOWS XP

No version of it will work on any version of Windows XP, and it's not worth it to even try. which really sucks.

Aw man, that sucks. :(
I'm guessing a Windows upgrade is a bit out of reach, isn't it? Or general revulsion to W10? <;)

If you want to enter the scary world of Linux and WINE, I've heard it works quite well. And with the recent shake-up, it's hard to say if an official Linux port can be released now.

In other news:
I haven't beaten AM2R yet, and it will be a while because I suck at action games. ;P But from observing a couple playthroughs, I can tell you one thing:

Just finished this game. It's a neat experience, but this won't surpass a true modern Nintendo-developed experience. If you compare it to Metroid Zero Mission, for instance, it loses badly.

My biggest gripe with this is that the level design can get pretty boring to incredibly uninspired very fast sometimes. In the end the game became so incredibly "un-hype" that, when I reached the final boss I was like "No... No man, there must be something else." I understand perfectly this is a remake, but it doesn't mean they shouldn't have improved where the original lacked.

Long stretches without a single enemy or plaforming challenge are common from halfway on the game onwards, and the further you progress, the lazier the level design becomes, almost as if the dev became too eager to see it finished nearing the end. Secrets, also, are very few (some of which are really smart, but most being ordinary).

The Spider Ball is criminally underused. When you acquire the Spring Ball, the Spider Ball becomes more like a nuisance than an upgrade.

The pros are the bosses and the Metroids. I loved how original the dev got with some ideas. The graphics are ripped from other Metroid games, but the new graphics are interesting and well done.

If I could rate it, this game would be a 6/10.

I haven't played it yet but went ahead and downloaded just in case the big N did exactly what they did.  I will play it soon.

Some of the complaints I've heard are exactly about that, theplottwist...a rather barren finale. Granted, it's been so long since I played the original that I can't remember how much other life the last two areas had besides the metroids.

As the team said, this wasn't a definitive release, and that there was more they wanted to do. This could have included expanding those areas. However, now that the take-downs are happening, I can't say if it can happen now.

Should've gotten those other things like expansions done to begin with, but I imagine they were in a rush to get it out for Metroid's anniversary. Shame, really.

It's pretty much like the original game. Once you start to get into the last area of the game you will notice an almost complete lack of enemies. This is where the bigger Metroids dominate the scene. It's just you and them. And it makes sense too as Metroids will devour anything, and in great numbers. I find it adds a sort of haunting quality to the game like the beginning part of Super Metroid. You being all alone and nothing around the corner except for the big monster. And you don't know when or where it'll jump out at you.

I'll be honest, It's great.
Now, is there a Super Metroid rom-hack that gets rid of the Slow-mo and low gravity?

I doubt it as I've not seen any. Besides, I personally feel that Super Metroid's feel in terms of control is exactly where it needs to be.

His link works fine, you just have to copy-paste the whole thing into your browser, since for some reason it didn't hyperlink all of it, just most of the URL. I just tried it and it works fine. I also have a link here that I uploaded for it, in case anyone wants to nab it. (https://www.dropbox.com/s/urmtfps17s8upu1/AM2R_10.zip?dl=0) Already sent it out to a few people so I can confirm it works.

Guys, I'm having an issue that's making me tear my hair out as I play this game.
Thankfully I have a lot of hair, but...

Anyone playing the game experience the following?

When you take strong damage, say, when you get hit by a Spike, or when you get hit by a boss, you lose ALL controller function?
I actually lost in an Alpha Metroid fight because the boss would knock me into a spiketendril pit and I would be unable to move for a good three seconds.

I'm using ScpToolkit and a Dualshock3 to play the game.  The game plays fine until I take damage, then it does this nonsense.
So basically I have to hope I never get knocked into a pit, or knocked into a spot where I take multiple hits, because essentially I'm a sitting duck for three seconds after I take any hit.

I never experienced anything like that in the betas. But then again, I used the Sabrent 12 button controller.

Negative. I've got an XBOX ONE Controller that M2AR already recognises.

Is one of these or perhaps both that are causing the issues?

I figured out the problem.
Something's amiss with the way the game does Force Feedback, so basically whenever Samus gets hit, and the controller rumbles, it stops functioning until it stops rumbling.

I disabled the Rumble/Force Feedback feature in the options, and the game magically works.

I finished the game at 6:11 and with 88% Item Completion.

Haven't even finished it...that Omega Metroid uses me despitefully and I'm scared. <;)

But it's certainly rekindled my love for Metroid. More on that in the "what games?" thread. :)

Sorry for the bump, but I need to gush about this game for a bit.

It took me awhile to get a Dualshock 3 working with my computer, so I didn't get into this until recently.  But what a joy this game is.  It really makes Metroid Zero Mission feel like it could have been better, and I've always used that game as the defining example of a remake done right.  I've been dying for a proper sidescrolling Metroid since the brilliance of Zero Mission wore off.  And even though this is a remake, it feels incredibly fresh.  There are so many new ideas that feel right at home in the Metroid universe.  The music is very well done.  Even though I generally don't care for remixes, I think there are versions here that I like better than the originals.

AM2R is just as linear as the original M2, but it makes things feel much more non-linear somehow.  I love that.  And there are so many little bonus touches that you wouldn't expect in an unfinished fan game, like Samus's idle animation, and the background of the "surface" area changing from the beginning of the game (daytime) to the end (night time).  The space jump controls better than it ever has in other Metroids.  I think it was intentionally difficult to perform the space jump in the earlier games, but it feels so good to have the frustratingly tough controls fixed.  It's great to be able to switch into and out of the space jump without having to land on the ground first.  The faster speed of the morph ball works really well, and it makes the slowness of the spider ball a great tradeoff for being able to cling to walls.

Did anybody figure out if you can roll down the Metroid Queen's throat and drop bombs in her belly, like in the original?

Yeah, in this game you can actually finish her off however you wish/can. But if you roll down her throat and lay a power bomb, her death is much more satisfying.

Is bombing her from the inside doable in the original Metroid II? That's the part I've never heard about.

Yep it is. But not like in this game.

On the original you lay one bomb at a time. When it explodes, the Queen spits you out. Rinse and repeat until you kill her (probably with missiles but also possible with bombs).

On A2MR you can't lay a bomb inside her until she tries to eat you. Once she does, you lay a single power bomb and she'll be plastered all over the cavern's walls.
