Title: To anyone with Windows 10
Post by: Bloodreign on September 24, 2016, 05:08:37 AM
Fair warning to you, M$ rolled out an update called Anniversary Edition, and it is a major piece of trash. It causes your system to slow down and at times freeze up for no apparent reason. Googling around, I found other also suffering similar fates.

It also won't play any of the empire earth games, Civilization 2 gold edition, Alpha Centauri planetary pack, Emperor: battle for dune, and several others, as well.

I was running 8.1 just fine, then one night I took a nap, woke up, and it auto updated. Then this update happened the same way, when I was asleep.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows10/ (https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows10/) an entire reddit section, nothing but various complaints about the update.

My personal PC kept asking me to update again and again to the point I had to ctrl+alt+del and shut the update down, clicking NO, NO, NO, do not remind me later, do not update, etc.. It was a chore for a while to say the least.

There was a guy I knew who did the update at work and he was basically off his PC for two weeks. the problem being old hardware apparently can not handle windows 10, whereas PC's which come with it pre-installed work fine.

It's all a sham, I loved 2000 and XP Pro was such a good system. W7 I was 50/50 on but I am used to W8.

MS' "Free update" for W10 was also bogus, because users still have to pay licencing fees every subsequent year of use. I'm glad that I've kept a few older versions of windows on disc in case I ever just want a PC which runs "off the grid".

Haven't had any real issues with 10 (barring the inability to turn Cortana off) or this update (which just kind of up and happened) so far, but looking at some of these posts and threads I'm hoping it stays that way.

Glad I have restore points and know how to softwipe if it does become too problematic, though.

I had the exact same problem.  Supposedly it is tied to Nvidia GPUs somehow.  I haven't heard of any AMD GPUs having this issue yet.

It caused Anathema to have a 10fps stutter every 5-10 seconds.  I rolled back to before the anniversary update and all my games including Anathema work just fine and run at 60fps again.  I changed my ethernet in regedit to be treated as metered so updates are not automatic anymore.  I hope this problem is fixed soon because that is a HUGE glaring flaw.

Crashing, frame-drops, and massive slowdown? It's almost like it's celebrating the anniversary of Windows '98 or something.

...Yeah, bad joke.

All my computers are still using Windows 7 and I'm probably gonna stick to this OS until they stop supporting it. By then we'll have, like, Windows 16.4 or whatever, and hopefully one of the operating systems down the line will be as good as this one.

Oh gosh, win98.... It's been a long time ago.

Yeah. That's what happened with my XP pc that I switched to Win7.

I'm still on Windows 7 Ultimate. I've no desire to update to windows 8 as it's way too alien to navigate, and Windows 10 is still going through its experimental  phase. I'll wait till a good OS comes along.

Aw, shit. So that's what that update was. Damn. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Turns out it was 50% Clickteam Fusion 2.5 with a certain extension and 50% Windows 10 anniversary update and I've found a fix to my issue.  Still seems like a lot of folks are having issues still with the new Win 10 update.

How do you get it to not crash every 3-4 months?

Another update came along, my PC is now no longer freezing for seconds at a time every few minutes. It is now working properly again.

mind you, windows 7 users aren't safe either. make sure you delete the most recent update or two. all they do is push the windows 10 ad on you, and add on Microsoft's telemetry and data collection systems from 10.

Google around, but theres some registry stuff you have to delete to Windows 10 proof your Windows 7.

Also, turn off automatic update. you dont need that shit. 7's already had all the updates it'll ever get years ago.

I haven't seen these Windows 10 update messages in a long while now. They must have stopped as the upgrade-for-free date has passed.

if you have the latest updates though, you still have Microsoft's data collection stuff in your system

I did this myself some time ago

Win7 also has its own share of issues:
If you try to install it plus the SP1, clean, on a new computer, and then try to go to Windows Update, be prepared to leave the computer on overnight for several nights.  It downloads the newest security updates at a snail's pace, and the download meter stays at 0% even though it's somewhat working.

I'm running WinXP/Win7 in my main desktop, Win7 in my server, WinXP on the Radio Station computer, WinXP on the workstation laptop, and Win10 on the latest laptop.  I will look out for these Win10 issues on my latest purchase.

I'm personally avoiding Win8 and 10 till a better operating system comes out. Like I did when I was still using WinXP and the whole Vista debacle came out  :P

Win10 actually seems pretty alright, so far, for me.
But, I do have to disable some background internet crap.

dont forget that it got rid of the search bar to force you to use Cortana. (which collects your search data and sends it to MS)
