Title: Judas the PS4 has finally gotten his just desserts!
Post by: Lumi Kløvstad on January 06, 2017, 12:35:20 AM
It’s official.
My old PS4 is dead.
D. E. A. D.
Dead.

But honestly? After the damned thing cost me internet overages on no fewer than 18 separate billing cycles by unpausing my paused game update files at 4 in the morning while I slept and couldn't stop it, I had already named it “Judas”. In a not so weird way, I’m glad the bitch is finally dead – I’d only tried booting it up at all to watch a blu-ray after leaving it unplugged for almost a year. Very not worth it to me to buy a new one. So tomorrow I’ll be holding a funeral for Judas the PlayStation.

It’ll be a viking funeral – I can’t wait to set this little motherfucker on fire.

Too bad I can’t take it out THIS WAY:

OMG It is sentient!?!
Burn it.

Hmmm... what will you use to play Bloodstained when it comes out?

I have a much-loved Vita that has never once betrayed me. And an Xbox One that is most agreeable. I also have a PC running a GTX 1080 that hungers for more games.

I have options is what I'm saying.

Then Judas will never ever be missed.  ;D

Goddamn never. The only game I was even slightly looking forward to was The Last of Us 2, but I'm fine with the first game being the ending -- it was a DAMN FINE way to end the story and a sequel is completely unneeded.

That game will eventually come out on PC.

Nope. PS4 exclusive through and through.

Oh right Naughty Dog.... Sony exclusive.
Maybe you'll get another PS4 that is not sentient in the future.
Turn off the PS4's internet access when you're sleeping, perhaps?

Were you subscribed to PlayStation Plus? The downloading and updating in the morning is part of the Automatic Update thing, which should only be happening if you're a PS+ member. And you can opt to turn that off, if you were.

I'm gonna initially answer in a very sarcastic manner which otherwise would come across poorly, so this is your disclaimer that I don't hate you or nuthin'.

I've owned Judas since six months after launch. No, turning off auto-updates had never freaking occurred to me.

*exhales*

I exhausted every option available to me. I did it all. Eventually, I even unsubscribed from PS+. Not for performance issues, mind, but because my online friends began to stop playing co-op with me altogether and simultaneous with these events, the free monthly games selection began to routinely suck ass.

But none of that appeased Judas.

Judas' constant insatiable hunger for updates never stopped or slowed. If I ever agreed to download something, Judas wouldn't rest until it was done, so I just unplugged it when I wasn't using it (it would even turn itself back on --cold boot itself-- otherwise!), and I eventually stopped using it completely. After that, it just sat in a closet corner with a sheet covering it like some horrible forgotten thing for the better part of 2016, only being awakened once during that span to blitz through Uncharted 4 (honestly not a fan, which I never thought I'd say about a Naughty Dog game).

Meanwhile, my Vita has never once had betrayal on its mind, and my Xbox One has never lifted a metaphorical finger to do ANYTHING without my express permission in each instance. And so far, my PC has behaved itself barring a crazy amount of updates after the initial startup, which honestly I'd expected to happen anyways.

Judas was just pure evil in console form, and after Sony botching the releases of their various Xperia phones in America during that long but critical period where people like me still cared about that brand, their MASSIVE customer service fuck up regarding my Vaio laptop some years before (they refused to repair it and made me send it to Best Buy, who broke it even worse. Twice.), and their willful abortion of the Vita before they'd even seriously tried to help it succeed (they gave up entirely after what, two years?), this string of betrayals by Judas was the thing that finally and fully axe-murdered my prior obsessive fanboyish love of Sony products beyond hope of redemption.

Sony done screwed up, and after all this time, I firmly believe they have no one to blame but themselves.

And Judas.

I own a PS4 and always turn it off after I'm done using it. This saves me a lot of headaches. And saves wear & tear on the system itself. I've had it for several years and it's still fine for me.

This is exactly what I do. Call me old fashioned but I'm a believer in turning things off when I'm done.
The only appliance I actually never turn off unless there's an update is my 3DS, because I'd read several articles most which were saying that it was designed to never have to be turned off, and well if nothing else I let the battery die from being drained which always takes days - by that time it's back on the charge again. (I barely use it now)

From what Bloody Aperture is saying, his PS4 just kept doing things behind the scenes even after it was switched off. (This kind of scares me when appliances are just doing things to suit themselves on their own schedule) Little did I know that the Wii, until the end of its life-cycle was doing the same thing, that's why it was sometimes flashing even after I'd turned the thing off. Luckily through out the ages of consoles buggering up with RROD, YLOD, etc, I have never had a console break down yet, I consider myself very lucky.

I feel bad for you BA, could you not write a complaint to Sony since Judas seems to be a problem case? Seems like a shame, because although the PS4 gets bagged (just as the PS3 did) I really like the PS4 as a console.

Ironically my PS3 is named Old Faithful because it's the oldest HD console I own and despite a few momentary scares, it's never actually failed me. I would say my PS2 deserves the name more, but despite its age, it's actually my second PS2 after my PS2 Fat Edition failed after a near decade of loyal service.

Judas was just t3h ebils, man.

And after Sony refused to service my still-under-warranty Vaio laptop, it pretty much ruined me for ever asking for their help ever again.

Same here. I have 2 PS2's, a launch and a mini. The launch still plays games and for a long time via dvd region x, played back ups of games too. Now I use the mini, because it loads faster and doesn't make so much of a racket (it's small and more quiet) so I'm giving it a well deserved rest after ... Jeebus, the better part of 18 years now.

My PS3 has frozen twice, but it's never been a YLOD. It's generally only frozen/ reset due to an automatic update.

Well I'm sorry to hear about your Vaio, but is Playstation still not it's own entity within Sony? They might treat it a bit differently if so. Just a thought mate.

Nope. Still not. They get a lot more autonomy on how they handle R&D and marketing, but they're still firmly bound to the company in every other way.

I'm doing the same, turn it off, pull the plug and keep it back in its box after using (can't allow the elements to ruin that shiny engraved surface). But my PS4 slim is still just a month old baby.

From what Bloody Aperture is saying, his PS4 just kept doing things behind the scenes even after it was switched off.

Is Bloody Aperture actually killing the power or is he just putting the system on standby? I kill the power on mine therefore no mystery updates cause no power.

Again I say: I have owned the thing since six months after launch. I know the difference between standby and off.

As long as it was plugged in, the damn thing could turn itself on no matter how "off" I knew it to be. So I ended up just yanking the power cord completely when it wasn't in use for no surprises.

This is how I initially interpreted it. When someone says off I just assume that's what they mean :)
It sucks to having to keep yanking the cable out. At that point I'd just shut my mains off completely when I leave my place.

Well, that is why it sat without any connection to an outlet under a sheet collecting dust as soon as I finished Uncharted 4.

Mine's never done that so it must be a pre-set option that has not been dealt with. I know with my PS3 it'll turn itself on sometime in the middle of the night so I just turn the back power switch off. But I've not seen this behaviour with a PS4. I don't doubt you so there must be more to it.

My money is on a bad circuit or crossed wire connecting to the power button.

Or it could be one of those updates that SONY did. I know that after a certain update on my PS3 it would activate in the dead of night for a few minutes then shut off. And it had never done that prior to the update.
