Title: Overwatch just isn't fun anymore, and the players are to blame
Post by: Lumi Kløvstad on March 01, 2017, 05:00:05 PM
So I've made the very sad decision to abandon Overwatch. The game is good. The people playing it? Not so much. Ever since they put in Competitive play, it's spread poor sportsmanship and Lunkheadedness like the fastest cancer I've ever seen.

I’ve tried to play Overwatch several times since Competitive Mode was introduced, but I just can’t get into it. Too many CompHeads are ruining the fun community feel that was abundant in the beta and at launch. Overwatch started as a fun, relaxed and friendly team shooter for the rest of us, but now it’s got the same kind of dickwads that infest the Halo and Call of Duty multiplayer modes, and muting them in-game solves nothing; they'll FIND YOU on social media.

The atmosphere on the actual game is just toxic for me. People only care about Comp, and only care about anything else as how it relates to their Comp performance – even in arcade mode. I used to try just playing on the off-season where it should be more relaxed, but godfuckingdammit the lunkheads never take a break. They’re like those guys at the gym who grunt excessively and drop weights. Jumping to quick play or Arcade solves nothing: these guys are now the majority and are EVERYWHERE. Nowhere is safe.

It used to be that if you lost a couple of matches, there was an attitude of "Man, that fight was TENSE! Sucks that we lost again, but it's okay. We'll roll with the punches and get 'em next time."

Now you hear "FUCK OH MY FUCKING GOD iAmLegend38! THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT AND NOW I'M GONNA DROP DOWN TO GOLD TIER BECAUSE LOSSES ARE LITERALLY CANCER!"
To which you might respond: "...We're in Arcade mode? There's no ranking here."
And then you hear back "IT DOESN'T MATTER! OUR LOSS WAS ALL YOUR FAULT AND NOW I'M NOT GONNA STOP LOSING."

I’m really sad about this development because before comp was introduced, I’d never had more fun on a team shooter. Now I just don’t have fun at all.

Overwatch has stopped being fun, but it's not the game's fault. It's the fault of guys who scream in chat and social media: 'IF YOU DON'T LIKE COMP STOP PLAYING OVERWATCH YOU STUPID DICKSUCKING CUCK'.

Thanks to that attitude?
Yeah, I think I will stop playing. It's not my home anymore.

And that's genuinely sad because once upon a time, Overwatch had a great community. Dare I say it, it had the BEST community of any online shooter.

Dammit I miss the days of the beta.

You should write in to the company and lodge a complaint about the nature of the competitive play mode. Cause that kind of behaviour, even for a competitive play mod, is totally unacceptable.

Solution: Buy a Switch and Splatoon 2 this summer. The game feels like the glory days of couch multiplayer but online. Only I hope this one has 4-way splitscreen this time around.

Oh, it's on my list. Believe me!

welcome to the MOBA cycle.

It starts out well enough, a promising game developed by (usually) an up and coming studio.

It's fun, it's unique, and the developers are well humored and clearly enjoy making the fans happy.

After a while, they refine the game. it starts to get more popular. Then they reach a point where there's some kind of shift in the company. Either they are bought by a larger company, or they become a large company.

Then slowly over time, things begin to change. Suddenly the game isn't as humorous or "fun" anymore. It's still fun to play, but it seems like the soul it had is fleeting. new characters are no longer as unique or interesting, if there were any in jokes, there are no longer any. If there was any story or in-game lore, it's no longer important.

Suddenly you begin to notice that the playerbase itself becomes more hostile and aggressive. This of course as a result of the game's competitive ranking system (if it has one) becoming "winning is mandatory, fun is optional".

The game then embraces the "e-sports" thing.

the community gets worse.

the devs become much more corporate and interested in profit models and keeping things politically correct for one reason or another. You can't take risks on characters, and any gameplay imbalance must be immediately rectified to keep the pro players happy.

and finally, older characters get "updated". usually erasing anything unique and quirky they had.

I played League of Legends for a while.

Riot was never the same after they got bought out by a chinese gaming company. For instance, they stopped making any characters with exposed bones, and there was never another skeleton character ever again. Why? Because the chinese find it disrespectful to show the bones of the dead in media, and instead of keeping regional differences, they just homogenized the regions altogether.

many of the earliest characters were in-jokes related to other games or pop culture, but ever since they went big, nope. can't have that anymore.

And dont get me started on the community.

All Mobas go through the cycle sooner or later, if they live that long that is. Therte's plenty of failed mobas out there that nobody cared about and which just died

I bought this game because I knew it would be competitive. I usually just keep mic turned off and do my own thing, unless I'm playing with a party.

Overly competitive games are, in my book, categorized as trash. Playerbase is cancer, Strategy is out of the window because it always involves doing the exact same thing over and over, and with that, you really can't have fun after awhile because you are basically barred from doing anything in your own pace or even fuck around because any mis-step with demolish your fragile rank.

it's really blizzard fault.   before, Overwatch was about freedom, anyone can be same type of character, and better balances,  now blizzard ruin things, merging D.Va when she didn't need to be nerfed, should've buff the lower tier characters instead.   too much restrictions added that divided communities and stuff

blizzard did all sorts of wrong to it, and I'm glad I didnt buy the game, I played the open beta, and that was the best era the game had

Online gaming servers become selective and niche after a while. If it gets too much of either that's when you walk.
