I don't understand all the hate directed toward this game. Sure, It may not be as good as FF legend 2, Romancing saga 1-3 or both Saga Frontiers, but it's still a damn good game. as far as leveling up weapons and magic goes, just don't give everything to everybody. In other words, customize.
My party:
Firon: dual swords; cure, holy, ultima
Guy: spear and axe; status spells and cure
Maria: bow and arrow or variable weapons; Black magic and cure
Leon: spear and blood sword; flare, holy, cure and bio.
But enough from me, what about you?

I liked how Gus could talk to animals :D
-
His name's guy, not gus.
I know, weird name. :o
There's no levels, just leveling up stats, weapons and magic.
It's better to customize than to throw everything on everybody.
-
This the psp version or ds version or somethin your talkin about? Or the NES version?
-
I'm playing it on the GBA version. :P
There is no DS version, as of yet. :o

It was just really bad on enemy placement. Two steps too far in one direction and your entire party could be wiped out. I liked 1 better but I played 2 longer. I leveled up my fire magic to max level at the very beginning of the game (fighting those knights that you aren't supposed to be able to beat then) so I went through the rest of the game really fast. No spoilers but everytime I killed someone or someone or something died I always thought "Probably just a cheesy moment. I met the person 1 minute ago so they'll be back later." Im probably just not remembering everything correctly but there seemed to have been a lot of dead people in that game. Speaking of dead people...

I'm sorry...
Did you say Saga Frontier was... GOOD?
-
Yes, I liked BOTH saga Frontiers! :D
Now, UNLIMITED SAGA was a steaming pile of raw sewage. >:(
Anyways, back to FF2.

This is nothing new if you've played the dragon quest series.
Certain areas have stronger enemies, it only makes sense for the game to get harder as you progress. :P

2 was alright, it's just not my kind of game I like one's style and free roamingness (if that's even a word) ;D better.

Meh, I like customization, but not the kind FF 10, 10-2 and 12 offered.
Plus, I seem to possess an unnatural amount of patience and obsessiveness, so grinding is not an issue for me.

Lol, go play Skies of Arcadia. Have fun grinding :D
You don't have a choice with that game, but it's still one of my favorite RPGs regardless.

I gained the patience for grinding way back in '99, when I was trying to make my team tougher to beat the elite 4 in blue version.
Fucking lance and his dragons... >:(

OMG me too! Except I did it years later with FireRed/LeafGreen.
-
It was harder in leaf green because of all the new moves added, special being split, steel and dark types added in as well.
The second wave of the elite 4 was bloody murder. :o :o

Trick to the elite 4 is to use charizard and a gyarados, worked wonders for me back in the day, just equip them with there most powerful skills.
