Title: Upcoming Castlevania Movie!
Post by: Richter ZX on September 28, 2007, 08:55:39 PM
Ther's probably a topic on this already, but whatever.... There's this sweet looking Castlevania movie coming out. Here's the link, tell me what you guys think of it:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castlevania_(film)

I hope it isn't rated R (which it probably will be) I really want ot see it!

It'll probably be mediocre at best. On par with Van Helsing methinks

Sweet looking? I dont think so. It will probably just suck like all the movies based on video games.

Funny how the banner says Paul w. Anderson considering he is no longer the director of this project.

I'll just wait and see with what scenario they will come up. Judging a moving who isn't have start filming yet is meaningless.

Well, it's more or less screwed from the start. Bad directors, (I don't see how you can go from Stomp the Yard to Castlevania and make it work), bad timing, negative response from fans...I mean, if I made a movie about a sentient pair of boobs that fights werewolves, I don't think many would have an optimistic view about the final product regardless when it would start filming.

;D :D Haha! I like that. Even though with some of the teenagers that truly don't know jack about movies, a pair of sentient boobs might actually be a winner in their list.... :-\ ....got nauseous thinking about it...oy, the general public...

Still, I don't think the movie will do well. I'm still get it despite all else. After all, it is Castlevania...even though I guess if someone offered me a baggy of crap with a laber Akumajou Dracula, I guess I wouldn't take it...

Your logic is weird.  Just because someone directed a movie in a genre you don't like... they couldn't possibly direct a movie of another genre?  I guess you are a fan of directors with absolutely no range...  Fans will hate it no matter what.  Because fans don't want it to be good, fans of something will ALWAYS bitch when it is transferred to another media, just because it is impossible to make it exactly like the source material.

I mean seriously... fans HATED Transformers, a lot of fans HATED the King Kong remake.  I know people who think Spider man 1 and 2 are the worst movies ever made just because he has organic webbing... (notice I leave out 3 =D).

There is a curse on all sequels, remakes, and adaptations of other media in movies.  People hate them simply for not being exactly like what they were before.

Fans suck at judging things because there expectations are far to high.  All I want is a movie about one of the character we have already seen, at the correct time, without screwing up continuity, and delivering the kind of atmosphere you get from Castlevania.  Beyond that, let the film crew do as they please.

The next Uwe Boll?  Wow, you literally pulled that one out with absolutely no reasoning or logic behind it.  What have you seen so far that could possibly make you jump to that conclusion.

And you didn't get my point... fans will bitch about NO MATTER WHAT.  It's called a self fulfilling prophecy.  You tell yourself you're going to hate it so much and so many times, that no matter what, even if it is great, you will still hate it.

I can agree with Fans expecting alot but there are movies that just suck regardless if the person expect anything at all or not. You can expect nothing and BloodRayne the movie still sucks. And yes I just said expect nothing... hell you can expect worst than nothing and it'll still suck!

Gee, maybe becuase the only thing he has to his credit is a poor Dance movie and a widely panned sequel to teen horror flick. But who knows, maybe he'll show his true talent with this movie. I'm just saying his past works just aren't up to par.

Perhaps you should take a look at the director and producing company's past films. They are all box-office bombs. It's not that fans are bitching, which they are, true; it's the fact that the movie is being handled by the inexperienced and the incompetent.

But you did bring up an interesting point about self-fulfilling prophecy; I see that Crystal Sky Pictues has low-end films like Bratz and Ghost Rider, and Sylvian White has directed music videos and a shoddy horror film...

In the end, if you've been let down so many times, and we agree fans will bitch, I don't see why we're arguing.

First off, Ghost Rider was the number 1 movie in the world for two weeks, and did AMAZINGLY well.  And ok... he directed a bad movie, but you claim because he directed a dancing movie, that everyone I know who likes those kinds of movies likes, but it is not a genre you or I prefer so therefor he SUXZORS!  You really are not getting my point at all.  I am not just talking abut the Cv movie.  I am talking about fans in general.  And this movie is being made by rogue, not crystal sky...  Rogue is owned by Universal, and man... that studio is just crap after crap after crap... =)

Give it a chance until you see at least the script or some content.  The script we saw has been scrapped.  And you also never noted that Sylvain White is a long time Cv fan.

Strangely enough, am I the only one who thought that for a 90-minute adaptation of the game, Mortal Kombat (1) kicked ass?  :o The only thing I DIDN'T like about the movie was Gorro. He looked so gay...

Anyway, as Castlevania fans, we shouldn't complain. After all, don't forget that we are supposed to:

Play Castlevania
Watch Castlevania
Listen to Castlevania
Dress like Castlevania
Live Castlevania
Have sex with Castlevania
Eat Castlevania
.... And probably die from eating Castlevania.

A castlevania movie would be interesting, especally considering Dracula is one of the most recognizable fictional characters around. the only problem I see is seperating Castlevania from the other Dracula Movies, especally the 1931 Universal Film, which has set the standard for what Dracula is suppose to look like.

There's an exception though. Final Fantasy fans loved the movie Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children - or at least that's the impression I've gotten. It's not that they're converting it to another media that's the problem. The problem is that the producers aren't Konami. If another game company would make a Castlevania game I'm sure a lot of fans would think it sucked, even though it's the same media. My point is that a Castlevania movie could only be a success if Konami themselves made an animated one.

I think you're all confusing fans with purists. Fans tend to get excited about a project involving their favored franchises much more easily and even give it a better chance than the general public will (for example, look at Judgment; the general consensus here is pretty damn positive for it, everywhere else it's strongly in the negative).

Purists, however, are never satisfied unless a film adaptation is 100% faithful to the book, video game, comic book or whatever source of origin inspired the adaptation. These are the sad fanatics who blasted Fellowship of the Ring for not including Tom Bombadil prancing around festively and singing for fifteen minutes; the same pathetic bastards that rail against the Harry Potter films for every tedious piece of minutiae from the books that's (mercifully for the rest of us) left out; the same shreiking minority that already hates the Star Trek reboot because it might not be entirely faithful to the original series and films, which themselves slaughtered continuity without shame.

Being opposed to the Castlevania film as we've come to understand it isn't a sign of purism necessarily. Those involved with the project have shown little to no interest in the original stories and have a terrible track record in producing other films. Skepticism and cynicism regarding this film aren't quixotic or reactionary, they're pragmatic.

As I heard last, there isn't even plans to have the protagonist use a damn whip at all, let alone the storied Vampire Killer. That's like Ghostbusters without proton packs or King Arthur without Excalibur, it's not some summary detail of the story, it's part of the story and scheme itself. I don't care if they tweak timelines, omit certain characters or make up their own, or add a different take, within reason, on the central thematic elements of the story. But if this movie has full black leather one piece costumes, techno music, or firearms used as weapons as I suspect it probably will, count me way out.

The Vampire Killer was left out of the original script, bu we don't know it's status  yet in the new one. We do know, however, that the new one focuses around Trevor and Christopher Belmont (Now brothers), and their ancestor Leon.

Wrong. Christopher is not his brother. It's not Christopher Belmont. Leon also only makes cameos, I believe.

I heard that it was going to be based off of CV3.  Live action movies of videogames tend to suck.  If this movie was an animated one made by the CV team at Konami, it would probably be the best it could be.  A live action movie by an outside director, could be anything.

ya really how does he go form Stomp the yard and I'll always know what you did last summer to this.  Ya MK is probably the best video game to movie and you know how truly sad that statement is.

I don't care if they get it 100% right But do it justice that's all we ask. Why writers/directors don't just follow the story thast in the game is beyond me. They always want to add characters or change it around.

they already F-ed up Resident evil and Doom(shudders) looks like my favorite one will go.

Movies based on video games are the bottom rung of the "geek movie" ladder.  I don't think there is a video game movie adaption in existence that isn't formulaic junk.  So even if this thing gets made, I wouldn't be too excited about it.  Most likely, it will be a poor man's Van Helsing meets Underworld, with wooden acting, generic script and typical action movie set pieces.

My friends hardly know what Castlevania is, but they know I enjoy it. I'd like things to stay that way. If this movie comes out I feel like I'll have some serious explaining to do.  :-\ I once said I like some of the Tomb Raider games, and they were like "What!!? So you actually like the movies too then!?". As if it's the same thing. But they're not gamers so I don't blame them. Hopefully Castlevania won't be in theatres here, so there's a chance no one will ever find out about it. Cause I am 110% sure it's gonna blow.

see this is my problem right now with videogame movies, just using the title to get people to come to your movie and make some quick money is WRONG. Changing certain elements for the better and adding a few new twists and turns as long as they aren't anything too crazy I am all for, but the movie needs to still feel like castlevania. Throwing whatever they want up on the screen and calling it castlevania is just low life theivery really.

I don't think I would call the majority of these comments "RAAAGING negative" reactions.  I think "low expectations" is more appropriate.  Based on the past quality of pretty much every video game movie ever, I don't think there is much reason to believe that this movie will be anything other than a cheesy, generic action flick.

On my forum, we're expecting that this movie will never be made, considering it was shelved for the Writer's Strike last year, and was never pulled out again.

I honestly believe Silvain White wants to do an awesome movie (as he considers himself a big fan of the series and has said numerous times he wanted to do the series justice), but Ed Wood wanted to do awesome too, and look at his movies. Fact is, Silvain White, like Ed Wood, has an unattainable dream because his dream outshines his novice talent.

Fortunately, we don't have to worry about "PLAN NINE FROM CASTLEVANIA" coming out, because at this point it's just going to languish in Development Hell until the whole project becomes Dead on Arrival.

Things could be worse, I suppose. If the studio gets cold feet on the production and shelves it indefinitely, one Uwe Boll could always swoop in and do the whole thing on a micro-budget. Big or little budget, Uew Boll's movies are always asstastic.

For the record, Uwe Boll has directed at least one good film thus far: Postal. The movie is every bit as irreverent, shocking, offensive, and nut-bustingly hilarious as the games that inspired it. And the man himself has a jaw-dropping cameo dying from a gunshot wound to the groin. Postal is undoubtedly the Uwe Boll film that I would happily purchase with my hard earned cash to add to my DVD collection.

Still, I would have felt alot better if Konami had gotten Christophe Gans to helm Castlevania. Brotherhood of the Wolf was quite a unique hybrid, and Crying Freeman was light-years ahead of the manga and anime that it was based off of. Not to mention that for better or worse, his Silent Hill movie was a spot-on film adaptation of the games in both tone and mood.

There's no need for that. It's just being prejudiced, ignorant, and stubborn. It's ok if you don't expect much from it, but don't just think it will suck right away.

Not being prejudiced, just realistic.  I don't think Hollywood takes the sub-genre of video game movie adaptions very seriously.  That's why the majority of video game movies are poor.  They usually do not have very strong budgets, and also they tend to be "dumbed down", as they are tailored to the perceived audience that the movie industry believes would go to see a video game movie: teenagers looking for a typical action movie with very little depth.

Of course you never know what a particular director could do with a script.  There's always a chance that it could be good, but based on past history I'm not expecting much.

See this is the problem, they are already making major changes to the existing timeline. Altering the plot I don't care but they need to leave the timeline alone. And there's been so many rumors and such going around it's hard to distinguish fact from fiction. if they want to make a film based on cv3 it needs to feel like cv3 and at least have the correct cast if anything.

Leon cameos.

Now if it's just leon flashbacks from 5oo years before that'd be cool.

Trevor having a brother named Christopher
trevor had no mention of family in the first game and if he did wouldn't they want to help being from the same godly bloodline? Hell I ain't letting my bro go off and fight an army of evil by himself and probably commit suicide.

The problem is, when people see a game be made to a movie, they expect it to be exactly like the game was and that just isn't going to happen! It goes the same way for books into movies, its never going to be exactly on and people will always complain, oh they should of did this and why did they do that. This movie, im not exactly sure how good its going to be or not, but I will welcome it when it comes, to say it will suck now is just plain stupid, I'm not concerned if Trevor and Christopher(If its the same as CV:A which I don't think it is either but still)are in the same movie, in fact, I think it would be cool if two Belmonts together, makes it interesting to see how they think separately.

My opinion of this movie is, if it sucks, it better suck hard and suck hilariously like the Street Fighter movie. And if it doesn't suck, awesome. It's the middle ground that tends to piss me off (when a movie is bad, but only enough that it's really boring, ie the Dungeon Siege movie).

My guess...this movie will not be made.

First, it went through 2 re-writes. That's never a good sign. Then, production was "postponed indefinately." That's bad sign #2. Now it's "derailed." Stick a fork in it, this film is never gonna happen.

Hopefully the animated CV3 film gets finished & released, cuz the live action movie is a dead project I think.

Confirmed: Sylvain White is not attached to the movie (Thanks God!  :D )

Q: Are you still trying to do "Castlevania"?
White: No. "Castlevania" is a project that I developed for a couple of years at Universal. We got to a really good point, then the division of Universal folded, and I jumped on this movie. Now it's set up somewhere else, and I believe that someone else got attached. It's one of my favorite video games, and I'm a huge video game player. I played that game for 25 years, and I loved developing it. I almost feel like I've already shot it because I was so into it for a while. I think it'll be a great movie if they do it right.

Q: All the sudden, these big name people are getting attached to video game properties. Do you feel that "Castlevania" could still go now?
White: I think it's going. I just think that my window... because they're going now, or they're going soon. I still have six months on this.

*nods* Much like what happened with "X-Men," "Freddy vs. Jason," and "Watchmen." And we all know how those films turned out ultimately.

FUN FACT: "Freddy vs. Jason" had some 11 finished scripts and 6 different directors tapped to helm it.

If this movie does make it to the big screen I really hope that the droped the samurai sword wielding Belmont. Something about that was just seriously wrong and waved red tape in my head or as captain Kirk wouldv'e put it; "I'm feeling a red alert...back here."

They could always change that swordto a Cutlass, or Schimitar. The whole Samurai sword thing is out of place. You know, it would be intresting to see if they ever did decide to make Victor Belmont a real character, he had an intresting plot and background.

I agree. He never made to the VG screen but he could make it to the big screen. And that whole outcast story arc of his is very original. Something IGA has yet to make use of. While all the other Belmonts gave in to destiny, Victor was the only one to have ever turned away from it bacause he didn't want any part of it. Nothing like a Belmont who's not only struggling against the forces of Dracula but he also has an internal struggle with his destiny as a vampire hunter, rather then living life by his own choice. That's gotta be tough.

Here's an update on our movie:

Quote
"[Castlevania has] been trying to find the right financing for it," says Sims. "It's a big film with a giant fan base. They're not going through a big studio so it's about finding the right investors. James and I went to Romania and scouted locations." As for the creatures he worked on, "There's a Medusa and the vampires themselves had a unique quality to them that falls into James' style."

The games are great, but there's no way in hell I could see them making a decent game out of the storyline. Just look at the people who want to direct it and try to tell me it'll be any good with a straight face.

I'd rather have the entire budget put in to more Castlevania games - because this is going to hurt more than a curbstomp.

Seriously. The only reason I'll see this in theaters is for the lulz.

the guy who directed Solomon Kane is about the one guy I know who can certainly make a goood CV despite a low budget.
