Title: GBA on GBA player
Post by: Cypress on May 13, 2008, 02:37:39 PM
Just got one and it feels wierd to play the games on it. It seems a lot more fun. I played some Harmony of Dissonance and Tales of Phantasia. The games feel a lot more...epic. Even ReGaiden.

It's one of those reasons I still have my Gamecube.
Playing CotM on it is a blast, as is Golden Sun, Aria of Sorrow, and Mario Kart: Super Circuit, and some others as well.

and for those of you without a GBA player you can always emulate at full screen size.

Yeah but it's not the same...

From a person who's got two PC's connected to a big HDTV, it just feels... more right... on a GBPlayer.  It's weird, but something about the pixels not being perfect boxes, that somehow authenticates the whole thing a bit.

I recently sold my GC and GBA player on eBay to get money for Castlevania soundtracks.  :D

We call that sort of thing a "good trade".

:)

Well, I mean if you have a Wii anyway, guess you don't need the GC anymore.

Which soundtracks did you get?

I agree, Jorge, something about playing console games on PC bugs me. Just doesn't feel the same.

So how do the games look on that player? I might have to get one if it looks decent.

They're a little bit blurry, even on the 'sharp' setting.  But yeah usually games which had a problem on the GBA look better, such as the darkness of CotM on a regular player practically disappearing as a problem on the GBplayer, and in constrast, the uber-brightness of HoD being toned down on the GBPlayer.

It's weird, but it works.  Also games like Mario Kart let you use the Analog Stick as a controller so it feels a little smoother (technically all the games let you do that but joystick isn't for me, for platformers).

Why Kurt has all the music on the main site?

Some people like their music lossless :P

Also, support the game musicians out there when you can. I mean buying the game in the first place helps, but if you really want game music to get the credit it deserves then buy the cds.

Well, I didn't buy them yet, cause PayPal didn't finish processing the money into my bank account, but when it does I'll be buying SotN, DXC, PoR and CoD. Oh yeah, and I'll also want to get the PoR pre-order bonus items, which means another soundtrack is included with that too.

Thanks, but it turns out I changed my mind. I instead bought this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=280225738625&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=018

I actually had those CV soundtracks burned onto blank CD's, amd I could have done the same with these Zelda Soundtracks, but nothing compares to owning the official CD. Cause they often good artwork, and I can be certain it will play properly without having to worry about a problematic mp3.

Umm those're likely bootlegs... just to let you know

:│

On second thought, they definitely are: I just saw "SM's" logo on the provided picture. Stands for Sonmay, one of the most popular soundtrack bootleggers.

Yeah, if you want the real thing, DO NOT BUY OFF EBAY. That is rule number one. Maybe Amazon.com, and even then, don't buy from the outside sellers, just the site itself.

But that "Mario Zelda Big Band Live" is fantastic arranges of Nintendo music. I only have MP3s of it, but they are very good reimaginings.

I hope to get that cd myself someday, and hopefully it'll be a legit copy.

Yeah, I take big risks like that all the time, knowing I may end up just wasting money. But I've never had a problem in the past. Just to be sure, I checked the seller's feedback first and saw no problems mentioning bootlegs from people who bought the same soundtracks. But then again, is it obvious when you have a bootleg? Is it possible that these people didn't realize they had a bootleg because it looks real and plays properly? If that's true, then I don't think I really care.

Where do you see the SM's? I only noticed them on the Majora's Mask Soundtrack and the OoT Rearranged album.

Wow, it turns out I have bootlegged Death Note soundtracks. They all have little "KO-(StockNumber)" on them, which means that they were made by K-O records, a bootlegging company. Oh well, I don't care, they look and sound real, so I'm good.

I think sometimes even the SELLER doesn't know he has bootlegs. Especially if the seller is outside of Asia.

It's a big problem, and I don't understand how, why it's allowed.

eBay is NOT the place to get legit soundtracks, though.

One thing that shoulda gave that set away was the price. Game soundtracks often go for $25-$40 a pop (due to extra import charges); much more expensive than an average mainstream CD. When you see 9 CDs for the price of one, it cannot be a good thing.

If it looks to good to be true on eBay, it is.

Still even bootlegs go about $9 a piece. So you're still getting some sort of deal, I guess....

Yeah, It doesn't really matter me. I just want to save money and get a cool CD, even if it isn't actually the real thing  ;D

The real thing is better, however, since oftentimes bootlegs of video game and anime soundtracks actually sound worse, and the printing quality on the artwork isn't as good. Plus, they're freagin' bootlegs, so you should feel like a dirty sonovabitch for owning them. :o

I suggest buying soundtracks from Otaku.com from now on. Their shipping fees are up there, but they're fast, reliable, and totally legit. Seriously, if you're just going to buy piss-poor bootlegs, you might as well steal the music from a P2P or torrent and save yourself the money.

To be on topic... I borrowed a GBA Player once. It rocked my face. Kind of wish I had one. But then, I don't own a GameCube (my brother does), since I use my Wii now for GCN gaming, so it'd be worthless.

Oh well. I love my GBA SP+ anyway. LOVE that freagin' backlight (not sidelight like with the original SPs). Really looks gorgeous. Best way to display a GBA game, honest. Not even the DS Lite makes GBA games look as good, considering the games don't fill up the whole screen since they're of a lower resolution.

Nah bootlegs today don't sound any worse than the real thing. They are copied from the original CD afterall. So, so long as there are no skipping errors, it's the same.

But the print quality is lame and yeah you don't feel very good about owning one.

Then again, there are few here who can afford every official release or ost, especially when we considered we already bought the game :P Also several of the older originals are out of print anyways, so sometimes you just don't have a choice.

I can't even find a bootleg of YS 4 Perfect Collection. I wouldn't mind even having a fake at this point @_@

On a different note, I've always wanted one of those GBA SP+, else how can I play my original GB games again? I miss Warioland 3 especially ... :(

Well, I find the print quality on my bootlegged CD's to be just fine. The only difference is the KO stock numbers. Unless I'm mistaken. K-O Records is a bootleg componay, isn't it?

Yeah K-Os one of the big ones. If you can't tell, more power to you, but on average, I could print about the same quality off with my own printer. If you were to put the original side by side with it, I think you would see.

For instance, my Sonic Adventure ost turned out to be bootleg, and it was missing an entire page in the lyrics section. Another page was misaligned and text was cut off. And that release was from Ever Anime, another big bootlegger.

Also my CV 64 ost has an entirely different cover and back from the legit one.

I thought so. And I guess I'm just used to my crap printer. And that's too bad about your Sonic Adventure OST. And wait, when did that game ever have a song with lyrics? Wait, maybe I'm thinking of Sonic Advanced...

How is the CV64 OST?

Sonic Adventure is where they started introducing faux rock song character themes. They're hit and miss (miss for most), but I've grown to like em. Especially any Super Sonic theme.

CV 64 has a vrey dark, moody soundtrack, taking inspiration from movie soundtracks. It really fit the visuals of that game well, even if the soundtrack is kinda too ambient as far as Castlevania music goes.

It's damn good stuff and a very unique set of CV tunes. The ost release sports some very nice arranges too.

Unfortunately, it released too early to include the new songs that would be included in Legacy of Darkness; so no Sinking Old Sanctuary :(

Oh well, thank goodness for sound files.

Oh, yeah, I was thinking of the GBA Sonic games, the only ones I ever had.   :)

Yeah, I heard that many people dislike CV64's soundtrack, but like all CV soundtracks, including Harmony, it must be at least somewhat likeable.

Oh yeah, that's right. I haven't gotten around to playing Legacy which I bought a few monthes ago, so I wouldn't know much about it's music, but as soon as I buy a controller pack, I will. Sinking Old Sancuary is a good track, which I never liked the first time I heard it in CotM, but now I've actually grown to love it.

Why? music is music, personally I think the whole copyright thing regarding game soundtracks is bs. I pay 60 dollars for the game they should give me the soundtrack for free for buying the game at a price 400% higher than it's actually worth. Hell they should just start making the games with a built in option to just listen to the music or allow you to rip it and put it on a digital media. They make so much money on the games, I don't get paying out the wazzoo just for the music. I mean nintendo/Sony/konami etc. make all there money selling games, forcing people to buy soundtracks and spend uber cash on music they already own on cartridge or disc media is wrong in my opinion.

Yeah, you're right. Actually, they should just include the soundtracks with the game. Of course then they would just charge us more. And what is with this 'only releasing game soundtracks in Japan'? It's as if they think no one in America cares about good music.
